- Julian Lage, joined by Dave King on drums and Scott Colley on bass, performs "Seven Come Eleven" at Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, AZ in September 2022.
In Julian's words: It was an absolute honor to perform “Seven Come Eleven” with this beautiful Gibson ES-250 owned by Charlie Christian. This has to be the coolest guitar ever… completely modern and historical at the same time. Charlie Christian played this guitar on “Solo Flight” and many other songs during his time with Benny Goodman. Thank you to Lynn Wheelwright and all of our friends at the Musical Instrument Museum for making this happen. Thank you to Scott Colley and Dave King for the gift of sharing this experience together.

This sets it once for all: a musician plays to enjoy himself not for the public, an entarteiner does the opposite. Grea musicians plays for the joy of th emusic, they're "in the music"
This is 8 minutes and 23 seconds of the finest guitar playing I've ever heard/seen. Flawless.
before i read the comments i was thinking the same thing!! 100!!
Completely agree!
Oh, stop you, genius and famous guitarists! For common people this intro was a bit too incomprehensible. so i could only agree with a good half of your statement. to be precisely, only about 5 minutes should be sculptured in rushmore.
It's truly stunning. His facility is breathtaking.
@@ivanmoskvin7638 to be fair I think a vast majority of Julian lage listeners are not musically "common people"... but I did get the tongue and cheek 😉
My Wife and I were fortunate enough to be in the audience for this performance.... Yes, it was a beyond amazing evening!
I'm jealous!
We saw him in Pittsburgh, right before covid, small club. 3 piece band, blazing good.
Was there with my wife as well. Julian and the band were so damn good. And that venue! Got tickets late, so we were in the very back, but it didn't matter. It still sounded like we were wearing headphones, and could hear every detail.
Django would have liked this guitar instead of the Gibson they gave him back in those days !
1:47 when he turns the guitar into a frightening oncoming locomotive. Spectacular. Hats off to the rhythm section
Nobody embodies “the sound of surprise” like julian lage. Staggeringly great. Charlie’s rolling over in his grave…to hear better.
So grateful to the people who preserved this historic instrument. And also to whoever had the brilliant idea to arrange for Julian to perform on it!
Only actual player to do any justice other than Frisell
Wish he would have played through a cranked Gibson amp like Charlie. Smoking tubes.
Yes the technique is mind-blowing, but the man has exquisite taste. Every aesthetic choice he makes is pure perfection. What a master.
He is simply one of the greatest guitarists ever. I have never seen anyone improvise with such freedom. Beyond technique: music in free flow. Thank you Julian!
Charlie Christian must be proud to have so much talent playing his guitar. Last time I saw someone playing this relic was George Benson...
This is MASSIVE! Got that slightly overdriven aspect of Christian’s tone down EXACT! WOW!!! 🎉
I love taking a break from learning my tunes to watch a living master. It's so joyful!
Very nice to hear Julian playing a big box archtop again, let alone Charlie’s. Beautiful.
I love seeing how happy he always is when he’s playing
I'd always look happy if I could play like that too!
I second that idea.
@@utube9000 no joke. I’ve been playing for 15 years and I feel like a kid messing with pentatonics compared to him. I’ve done some transcriptions of his music and it’s just so next level. Maybe if I had 3 lifetimes.
At first I didn't recognize the tune... After the first minutes the groove started to flow... Impressive.
Great stuff. I'm a big fan of the Benny Goodman Sextet recordings featuring Charlie Christian, and Julian really does it well here with this trio. I'm glad instruments like this are being played, and not locked in a glass case. These instruments need to be heard, not looked at.
I was in the audience at the Musical Instruments Museum.....Everyone should see this man play....He's something special.....
That was just incredible, the clarity of Julian's melodic expression, the confidence in direction, the dynamics and the sheer exuberance shown, he's just on another level.
This is just wonderful.
Two (or three!) icons collide.
I love seeing the joy that Julian has when he plays.
We wants it. Give us our precious.
My gosh. Julian is maybe the only guitar player that has the dynamics equivalent of an expert classical pianist. What a cool experience to be able to play that guitar.
Thank you. This makes life worth living.
Absolutely Beautiful virtuoso playing. Flawless and utterly original. I’m always amazed at the complete connection with his instrument he has..whatever the context.
it's not even 8 in the morning an you made me smile and swing, thank you Julian, and good morning from Zanzibar
so cool man. i spent some of my childhood there
Superb. Thank you. Truly.
My dad played horns, particularly clarinet for all of his life. He was a Benny Goodman fanatic. When I rebelled to wannabe EVH, he was patient. When I grew up and returned, he gave me Charlie Christian and Rose Room to practice. We jammed it and that's the only recording I have playing with my pops. Thanks for bringing me back!
absolutely insane. Julian is a genius
I love jazz trios with guitar/bass/drum
Incredible to see and hear that instrument! Julian is a fine choice for the honor of playing it :)
Charlie Christian had a tragically short life and he lived in a time where recording music was really in it’s infancy. Thanks to Julian Lage and others, his music will be played forever. This clip is beautifully done. What a treat!
How blessed are we to hear/witness this?
I was at this show and made a review of it on my channel.
Wow! The Intro was from another planet. Love this Trio👍 Charlie’s smilin down 🇺🇸
What an honor! So glad Julian had this opportunity!
So good. This is obscene. I was going to rave about his descending lines and have to call myself a fool. ALL of his lines are amazing:)
thank you julian, dave and scott. can't wait to see you in atlanta
Wow! The wonders never cease with this man. Scott and Dave were sublime!
Love that Julian is carrying on this tradition, Charlie would have loved this!
Such an airy and full sounding guitar in a master’s hands. Amazing!
That guitar waited a long time to get to sing it again!
Blessed by this!
Wow, that fired me up and improved my mood. And shout out to Dave King! You got the gig!
I know I am going to like it!!!
Great museum! Several older Gibson ES 125s, amps, etc. Worth the trip for music buffs!
We all rarely watch any entire video on yt... I did here and loved it !
Brilliant guitarist. I am sceptical about the technical impact of the guitar. Magic here.
Increíble el manejo de la Textura que tiene Julian en la Guitarra cada día esta un paso más adelante ! Niceeee
Thank you 😎
I love the creativity and freedom of the opening
Another breathtaking highlight! Julian, your playing is a constant source of happiness and awe in my life, thank you!
What a weirdo! Loved it! Drums and bass all worked together quite lovely.
I love the joy he has in playing guitar
Me emocioné mucho al ver este video. Julian Lage que gran guitarrista! qué ganas de poder verlo en vivo. gracias por este video que me hizo muy feliz
Incredible! Just Incredible!! Musicality beyond belief.
Outstanding. Power trio superb.
Aside from the wonderful music he makes, I love to watch Mr. Lage play- he seems to be enjoying it tremendously. Occasionally he smiles as if he's telling a very sly joke and he's sure that we get it without explanation - I hope we do. Tremendous in every sense.
Very inspiring! We've visited this museum and it is special. They've several older Gibson ES models. Quite a collection.
beautiful, thank you so much for sharing
Charlie is smiling from heaven for sure.😊
Simply incredible.
this man has a natural gift!!
...+ untold thousands of hours woodshedding.

That’s what I call a Master Class!!
one of the most special guitar performances i have ever seen, genius.
Beautiful music; sounds gorgeous!
I just can't get my head around it. He's our Django, our Hendrix, our McLaughlin. The ideas just fall out of him. I can't wait to hear what he does next!
Fantastic and the lighting/stage gorgeous as usual. Also, I've been practising and with a bit more work might produce a passable 2:25
Truly the most impressive parttt
There's talent and whatever Julian does!!!next level 👍🏾✌🏽
