$30 for steak? wow! I visited Argentina in October 2023 and I paid around $12 for steak+wine at a good restaurant. Looks like thecost of food are going up to the USA level. But still missing Argentina a lot! My favorite country and I want to live there one day even if it’s expensive. Hope to see you again Argentina!
That's right, my friend. Since you came here, with the new government, this has increased more than Switzerland, with third world salaries. Imagine, if it seems expensive to you, what it is like for those of us who live here. Greetings from Buenos Aires. (Sorry for my English)
Like everywhere else in the world, it depends on where you purchased your items. I lived in Buenos Aires Argentina for over 10 years. Where he brought that steak the restaurant had table clothes on the tables and that indicated to me that was an expensive restaurant in Buenos Aires, hell you can buy a 200 dollars steak dinner in Buenos Aires if you want, but if you live like a local in Argentina you will never spend 30 US dollars for a meal in Buenos Aires.
Argentinian here, you didn't get scammed with the diapers, it's just that for poor people $15000 pesos is a lot, for reference you can buy 2 kilograms worth of good meat with that kind of money and feed yourself for 1 week or more, great video Sly, thanks for visiting.
Hi Sly. I wanted to correct some things that you didn't get quite right. First of all, the MEP dollar rate isn't new, it's been around for many years. What was newly introduced in January 2023 was the differential tourist exchange rate, which was an agreement wherein the credit card processors like Visa and Mastercard could sell foreign card transactions USD on the MEP market instead of the official market. This was always around 5% lower than MEP due to extra fees that they charge. Back then the official rate was 200, the Blue rate was 400ish, MEP rate was 350, and I think the differential rate was like 320. For reference, today dec 13th 2024 the official rate is 1000 pesos, the differential exchange rate is 989 pesos while the MEP rate is 1070 and the blue is 1100. So you're still paying around 10% more by using your card instead of cash. Especially since in many places there's a 10-20% cash discount. So generally it's still better to use cash. The reason why BA seems a lot more expensive in usd now is that we had 190% inflation over the past 12 months but the exchange rate has stayed at around the same. The reasons why there was so much inflation without a chance in the exchange rate are many and fairly complex to get into, but baiscally everything got a lot more expensive for foreigners. Even though it's still cheaper than Uruguay, it's not the bargain it once was.

Actually the steak in Paraguay is much better. Argentine steak has good flavor and it’s big, but half of it goes to waste as it is fat and gristle. They also over-salt it. The Paraguayan beef is better overall quality. I lived in the southern cone for 3 years and have eaten many steaks in Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. Just my opinion .
I moved here about a year ago, I eat steak every day and drink 2L of milk, it cost me like 7-10$ a day to eat like a king where it would cost way out of my budget in canada to do the same. Prices are a bit up though specially housing/renting the exchange rate isn't as good.
Having been born in Argentina, raised in the U.S. and lived in Paris and Frankfurt for a few years, I can say that Buenos Aires is the Paris of the Americas. Food, culture, nightlife, people and general atmosphere is alive and full of effervescence. There is no other city like Buenos Aires anywhere in North, South or Central America. Not even New York.
That's the spot right there my friend. I'm surprised you know about it because it's not where most people go to film any videos. Excellent choice and not overhyped or overpriced either.
Yes indeed and all the beef in Argentina is high quality because most of the cattle roam the land and eat only grass, they are not fed grain with hormones like in North America.
I did the exact same thing you did from Montevideo to Buenos Aires back in late July. I ate at the Parilla Pena as well. It is one of the best places for steak. Great food and low prices. I wish I was there right now and your video helped me relive my trip from earlier this year.

How cool you walked through some familiar places I used to walk back and forth when I stayed in BA for a couple of months. And Parrillada Peña is definitely my favorite steakhouse. When I first moved to Buenos Aires at the beginning of the year the blue dollar exchange rate was 1.43 and when I left 6 months later it was 1.07 blue dollar at western union. Enjoy your time in the city!
Yep, expensive! I just got back from Buenos Aires a couple days ago. Lots of places not taking credit cards. Very expensive to use an ATM (max I could take out on a single transaction was $30US and got charged $12 each time, ouch!). Lots of black-market money exchangers downtown. Lots more street beggars than I remember. Stores were much more expensive than my last visit a few years ago. Lots of construction and full restaurants, so something is working, but it wasn’t ‘cheap’ like last time.
Wow! I thought it was bad using an ATM in Thailand. My U.S. card limits me to $500 a day and the Thai ATM charges $6.60, my U.S. bank charges an added $10, there is a conversion fee, so about $20 total, but your $30 limit is ridiculous.
Nice video. I’m from Argentina but I live in Atlanta. I just came back. Amazing city and amazing food. Specially steak and ice cream. Prices doubled since last time. Before with the blue exchange rate you would have paid around $12. Here in Atlanta I go to a bbq place I love called beer grill $23 all u can eat
@TheAirlock well, Palermo is the most popular but expensive. Recoleta is in between downtown and Palermo, also expensive. If you want something centric... I would choose something in Belgrano next to the subway. Belgrano is nice, close to Cabildo Avenue, and easy to get a bus and subway to the most famous attractions. You can walk if you are a walking tourist.

I love B.A. we were there in March of this yr. and had a great time. I’m guessing that those buildings now are not as lit up as before is the new government does not subsidize electricity for consumers like it once did. It now costs a lot more.
besides that, the idea of the government is a total liberalization of the prices, the electricity company can raise the prices every month without explaining what is the reason for the percentage, or to be at the same pace as monthly inflation.

I went to a restaurant last year and got a steak meal for $5 in Buenos Aires at their lunch special, it depends where you go also, if I had gone to a famous parrilla it would have been $100 or so, but you pay for the popularity of the restaurant, and the parrilla you went to, had a line, that means the prices won't be cheap because certain spots have a name and then they can afford to charge higher prices, but if you go to a random restaurant the food most likely will be as good, and the prices much lower.
well, this year a normal menu in Buenos Aires starts at 20.000 pesos, I was the other day at a Burguer King and the combo my son wanted was 17.000 pesos, 30 dollars is not that high, its like a normal price at that part of the city

Honestly, the prices of goods and services in Buenos Aires are ridiculous right now. The country is experiencing very high inflation, if you notice, there are more and more homeless people in Buenos Aires.
@@nicogaregnani9008 That was in *December* 2023 - in response to Milei's shock devaluation (which in Argentina is felt immediately - often even days before the actual order to devalue). That said, it *had* reached 12% a month that November - which is severe even by Argentine standards. And yes: inflation is better now - though by way of a depression.
The inflation has been in steady decline since Milei took over, what is happening right now is that argentine peso has gotten stronger that's why is gotten expensive for foreigners and also the extreme austerity mesures taken by the new government have cutten up a lot of social welfare.
Not true. Inflation is high when compared to pretty much any other country, but it's still under a fourth of what it was a year ago. The prices of goods and services have indeed increased, but that's because subsidies have been severely cut (especially for energy consumption), which was one of the main forces pushing inflation. Prices rose and stabilized as predictable, and have remained steady for months now except for a few items which didn't increase their price early on and are finally catching up (or items that needed such a mark up people wouldn't have been able to afford them if they were marked up in one go, so they did it in stages). Last year we had weekly changes in the cost for everyday products, including food. Now those are monthly and don't add up to that much. The economy is visibly recovering. There are homeless people, no argument there. There has been a lot of homeless people since the 2000s, with their number increasing or decreasing slightly (sometimes markedly) on a year by year basis. The number of homeless people right now isn't especially high. Hopefully as the economy keeps recovering employment will rise and those people will finally start to be able to afford housing and improve their lives and that of their families.
Awesome video! I'm from Uruguay but I've been to Buenos Aires since I was little. Last time there was July last year, the month the most Uruguayans went there in History due to an extremely convenient exchange rate (also for other people, of course, not just Uruguayans, but we have a special thing for Buenos Aires, is our big city nearby (10 times closer than Sao Paulo, and the language's the same). I see prices have increased nearly tenfold or so, at least 5 times higher than last year now that Argentina's about to take off for good (just let Milei remove that handbrake the "cepo" on the US dollar is, and you'll see, growth by over 4% is expected for next year, but I think it's going to about 6 or more!
Yeah - you have to always tell them "a punto, por favor" (with an a-ok hand signal). In the past, most waiters would know better - but these days, you practically have to get up and grill it yourself.
thats the tourist doneness. 90% of argentinian would had returned that steak. Well done/medium doesnt mean dry...Argentinian art of cooking meat is very slow and with "quebracho" firewood, so you get a supertender and juicy meat but not raw. thats for the french jaja. but of course, its all about a matter of taste.
Dude you got robbed. That place is a clear tourist trap...just the fact that it has menu items in english gives it away. You can probably get that same meal for 40% less any other place. Glad you enjoy my country though, and hey, I travel as well and I fell in countless trourist traps in the past few years so who am I jugde.
New Zealander here! Best wishes to the people of Argentina! I hope you can be patient with what Milei is doing - I think there is light at the end of the tunnel! I heard that inflation is way down from what it used to be and there is now a budget surplus - *very rare* in any country! If a little bit of that surplus can be saved in a "rainy day fund" for the future (so that you never have to go through tough times again), I think that would be a big help! Someone could suggest that to Milei if he hasn't already thought of it!
Right now Buenos Aires is more expensive than Europe, we have less inflation than a year ago in Argentinian currency but more inflation in US dollars. Milei is really ruining the country in every shape and form
Bro, you did it! ... getting that steak and filming it was epic. Good timing. Got in. Ate. Got Out. Smooth.... You haven't been to NYC? And yet you've been to Eritrea. Awesome content.
Just exploring Buenos Aires is like 5% of Argentina. If you want to see the true beauty of our country go to Mendoza, Bariloche, El Bolson, San Juan, Catamarca, most of Patagonia is also beautiful. Buenos Aires is like the worst image of Argentina lmfao
Artificially low prices aren’t a good thing, because that difference in cost is likely coming from somewhere else. Eventually that ‘somewhere else’ runs out of money to subsidise those artificially low prices. Then people act surprised.
I experience the dipper begging a few weeks ago in Buenos Aires. It seems to be a scam. I had a women approaching me and asking me to buy her diapers. I just gave her a few bucks and she got really upset, so I thought that there was something shady because that was not a normal reaction after getting little money for free.
People are starving under Milei’s government, it’s not a scam, they really are losing their houses, their livelihood, their retirements, their healthcare. People are really sad and upset, there’s no upward social mobility anymore, they’re desperate
Here in Rio de Janeiro that's a very common scam asking for diapers and powdered milk right in front of the pharmacy. They have something worked out with the cashier where they do the return the cashier keep some of the money and they keep the rest. This is 100% how it works here in Rio de Janeiro
Great video sir! just a piece of advise: be careful with your phone. Walking around holding your phone out is a sure fire way to get it snatched out of your hand, especially if you're walking on the street or very near to the curb. I was honestly anxious watching lol.
you should try the Argentinian way of the asado. If you go to a Argentine Parrilla, the first course is Grilled cheese with chimichurri, grilled vegetables, and chorizo, lots of French style bread and then all then some chitterlings, kidneys, some other parts unnamed with salsa criolla ( onion.pepper), plain salad ( tomato lettuce ), maybe fries. The rest are increasingly bigger parts of the sides of the cow, and the juicier. The last course is coffe and dessert. You could gain a lot of kilos in one seat. Never ask for sweet sauce of any kind or the service will be very mad. The URuguayan version have more chivito involved, but is almost the same
Argentina is 10 times more expensive in general than one year ago... if we talk about prices .... now our prices are higher than in some europeans capital cities... very sad for us, our salaries are one year behind
@@Oldbmwr100rs Please. Maybe for *you* it is - but Americans are making retail purchases and going on holiday travel like never before (and businesses, on equipment like never before). When using foreign cards, you get the MEP exchange rate which is really close to the Blue rate. MEP exchange is based on an specific bond called AL30, which you buy with pesos and returns US dollars. For the restaurant, if the menu is in english I consider it a bit of a red flag, because they know they recieve a lot of foreigners they might charge a bit more than an average Parrilla. The chorizo was $6000 (which is literally a steal) in La Escondida, a well known parrilla, a chorizo is $3300, way less.
13:49 is criolla sauce, a disches mix of tomatoes, belly pepper, white onion, vinager and oil. we generally eat 'asado' or 'choripan' with that sauce.

Hi Australia 🇦🇺 👋💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞
I moved to Argentina last year. Went to Buenos Aires and fell in love with a beautiful woman. We moved to a small town several hours south of Cordoba and love the simple life. You are not going to find much better women than an Argentina woman... obviously they have a few bimbos too, but if you take your time you will find a good woman
Which town?
South America is a no go for me.
I ❤ Bimbos.

"Argenina's got the Steak Game on lock", I agree 100% 😊
Actually the steak in Paraguay is much better. Argentine steak has good flavor and it’s big, but half of it goes to waste as it is fat and gristle. They also over-salt it. The Paraguayan beef is better overall quality. I lived in the southern cone for 3 years and have eaten many steaks in Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. Just my opinion .

Perfect steak. Argentina has some of the best it the world.
You gotta be kidding!
@ 😂😂 You haven’t been there, have you? Or you’ve been only to the bad villas. 😆

Buenos Aires is way better than Paris, and I live in Paris. Argentina is the best country with the best people in the world
That's the spot right there my friend. I'm surprised you know about it because it's not where most people go to film any videos. Excellent choice and not overhyped or overpriced either.
The steak looked good. I'm sure the quality of the beef is different than in the U.S. For $30, that's an amazing meal.
Yes indeed and all the beef in Argentina is high quality because most of the cattle roam the land and eat only grass, they are not fed grain with hormones like in North America.
Just avoid tourists restaurants. Accomodation, meat and wine are the best and the cheapest. Nice piece of meat costs 7 dollars a Kg at the supermarket
The beef in Argentina is better than the USA, organic, natural food, not hormone.
I did the exact same thing you did from Montevideo to Buenos Aires back in late July. I ate at the Parilla Pena as well. It is one of the best places for steak. Great food and low prices. I wish I was there right now and your video helped me relive my trip from earlier this year.

Currently in Argentina. My 2nd time here. I love this city. I stayed in San Telmo and now in Palermo. It's my favorite city for eating and electronic music at night. The prices have definitely increased and I hope this benefits the Argentinians in the long run.

Here in the U.S. they asked me for baby formula for their baby at WalMart. I figured it was so she could then return it for cash. What I did was tell her I was going to also buy a plastic container and pour it in there and keep the original container. She said forget it and left fast all bothered.
Mientes, todo mentira.
welcome to Argentina brother, I hope you have a good time!
That's right, the prices hasn't grown that much but the exchange rate continously falling makes the country much expensive for tourists.
Where is that? My parents are from Bolivia and I live in ATL. Must not be great food if it's all you can eat for that price 😊
All looks so good! I need to be there again!
Loved your video and how you enjoyed my city... Let us know when you are back! You got another buddy here 😉
What are the best areas to stay in BA from your point of view?
@TheAirlock well, Palermo is the most popular but expensive. Recoleta is in between downtown and Palermo, also expensive. If you want something centric... I would choose something in Belgrano next to the subway. Belgrano is nice, close to Cabildo Avenue, and easy to get a bus and subway to the most famous attractions. You can walk if you are a walking tourist.
I'm from New Zealand, and I visited Buenos Aires for my first time in November 2024. I was warned by two Argentines living in NZ to be careful about scams there, but I had great experiences during my short time there (and in other places in Argentina including Salta, Iguazu and El Calafate).

The last Argentinian steak I had was so rare it still had a bell on it. :)

This is 100% how it works here in Rio de Janeiro

you should try the Argentinian way of the asado. The URuguayan version have more chivito involved, but is almost the same
Make a video in Punta Arenas, Chile and Ushuaia, Argentina. Those two places are on my bucket list.
