I'm trying to remove some massive bush stumps and established root structure from some seriously impacted soil. I can't seem to get the saw to cut through. Do you think I'm not getting deep enough ? Any suggestions ?
Ok when I 1st saw this I thought no way will it be this easy. Had to remove a bush today with 10 years of growth. OMG it took 2 min to saw around and pull it out. This works!! Thanks for sharing!!
This works REALLY well. I've just taken out a bunch of gnarly holly bushes using my DeWalt reciprocating saw with a Milwaukee blade (AX for nail embedded wood, with carbide teeth, 9" long). Blade held up great. The one hitch is it takes a lot of battery juice. I had to recharge pretty often. But in the end, this approach did the job readily.
I have pulled out thousands of honeysuckle bushes using a sawzall. It really works. I only cut one or two roots, though. Then not as much dirt comes out of the ground, but more of the roots do. I use a small portable winch to pull them.
Keith been landscaping for 15 years never saw this trick.... I used it today on a tight spot large shrub removal and it really worked like a charm. Great tip !!!💪🏻🇺🇸🔥🔥🔥
I had to remove 8 Yew bushes. It took me 1 day to remove 2 pcs of them with a hacksaw and shovel till I saw your video. I bought a Hypertough reciprocating saw from Walmart for $58 and it worked like a charm. You are a lower back saver.
I use a 9” “wood with nails” blade. It’s aggressive with wood but doesn’t immediately dull. Started to use it cutting trees out of fence lines and now always have it in the truck!
Are these blades you use with a sawzall? We are having to remove a ton of bushes that were improperly planted and are causing foundation issues and issues with our pool, so we have a lot of work ahead of us. Just trying to find the easiest and best ways to get it done. Also, saw a guy use a farm jack and a huge metal chain to just rip the bushes out of the ground. Was thinking maybe a combo of the two, especially for these huge ones, would be good.
I cannot thank you enough. I had to remove eight 10+' tall bushes that were 17 years old and had side roots up to 8" thick. While not easy, this was much easier than the alternatives. I am not much of a handy man, but I could do this. For those interested, I used a 12 amp corded DeWalt reciprocating saw with Milwaukee 9 in. 5 TPI AX Nail-Embedded Wood Cutting SAWZALL Reciprocating Saw Blades. I also used a 5" trenching shovel in between the inner and outer circles to allow me to better cut under the thick stump which was up to 2 feet across.
I've been doing that for years. And this is my first year in business. Thanks for the reminder Keith. I haven't taken Roots out in a long time 👍 that's why channels like yours are so good you remind us of things we may have forgotten or didn't know to begin with.
You are so correct. I purchased mine from harbor freight . The price was less than $30. Yesterday I used it to remove a bush/tree. The main thing is to get Pruning blades.
Great Video! I just found my milwaukee sawzall in basement; got it all ready to use this weekend to remove 8 to 10 shrubs. waited 2 weeks for estimates to remove these shrubs (bec felt too old (60+) to do this big job myself). No estimates. So decided to do it myself -- got two shrubs using axe, lopper and shovel (it was a lot of work) and thought there HAS got to be an easier way to do this!! Came to youtube and found your video! Thank you for making video. I feel confident i can remove the remaining 8 or 10 shrubs with the sawzall!
This is why I love UA-cam. I would have never thought of that. I'm about to remove 200 sq ft of bushery from my property and this is going to make it so much easier. Thanks!
Thanks for this great tip. I removed eight azalea bushes today with a reciprocating saw. Took less than two hours for removal, and then two hours to transplant to a new location. With clean up, a five hour job. With a lot less back breaking work, too. Thanks!
I'm taking down a hedge, some of it at least 50 years old. I got so fed up trying to dig them out, I thought about a towrope and my car, that's plain nuts so went to UA-cam. Yours was the first that came up and this looks so much better. Got the gear on order, I will have my revenge. You are awesome.
The Saw all isn't just for construction any more. It's good for cutting small trees. Maybe not as powerful as chain saw but it is less aggravating ( no gas or oil or pulling a rope to start) and probably safer too.
I used my recip saw with a 12" pruning blade on a small oak that was growing against the corner of my house thinking "This will probably destroy the blade." It worked great. Been using this method ever since.
@da4944 thank you for commenting on this post. I made the mistake of getting a wood blade and it almost broke my back but when I saw that you use the pruning blade, I got a Diablo pruning blade and it worked like a charm. Thank you for commenting on this video if it wasn’t for you I would never get an answer.
Part of me says "I don't want to abuse my saw to that", but a bigger part of me says "I don't want to hand dig and chop all those roots". I'm trying this tomorrow.
I'm a woman and with a sawzall in my hand... I turn into someone that I never thought I would be... one crazy ass b****! The power being able to do something like cutting down a tree thank you Jesus! Mind you just turn the big 60!
Ok, so I had a 20 year old shrub that died 5 years ago. I cut the stump down to about 6 inches above the ground. I needed to get rid of it down to about 4-6 inches below grade so I can put in a brick paver patio. The ground around it is dry and very hard to dig around. I saw your video and figured I would try the sawzall method. I had an old plug in cheapo reciprocating saw with a pruning blade. I plugged it in and started cutting at a 45 degree angle about 6" away from the stump. 5 minutes later I was all the way around. I pushed on it with my hand and it was hard as a rock. I then took my spade point shovel and dug in along the cut line and pushed down on the handle. It moved! Two more digs and the stump and root ball came up and out!!! Thank you! It did not even dull the blade! Genius idea!!
At 75 years old, I just did this last week! 12 in pruning blade (1) cut in angle towards the inside root of 30 in diameter and popped right up! Using my Milwaukee sawsaw . 30 minutes was done. NEVER TO OLD TO LEARN.
Awesome tip! Was actually dreading taking out 6 shrubs with a shovel and axe but looks like I will be doing your saw trick! This saved me time and sweat! Thanks
Practical and funny. Even with tips like these, which I'll definitely use for our little urban community garden, it's worth it to hire someone like you whenever we can afford it. Thanks!
A buddy of mine is a landscape architect and he turned me on to the sawzall trick for roots when planting. It has bled over to situations just like this. Will have to try it while saturating the ground. Been through several Diablo 12 in Demo Demon Blades over the last 4 yrs.
Depends on the shrub/tree you are trying to remove. The root ball on these is shallow so the reciprocating saw method works well. Another way to do this is to get a farm jack and wrap a chain around the base of the trunk. Pull it right out without any cutting and save all the ruined blades in the saw from cutting dirt.
I have used that method many times and it works great. I started using the Diablo pruning blade, it is more rigid and doesn't wear out as fast as typical construction type blades. Great video to show how easy it is.
I am very impressed! I got a sawzall (it's not a Milwaukee) for this very purpose. My blades not as long. :( I wasn't sure if it would work but now, I'll be cutting down everything.
I’ve been using a sawzall to cut out stumps and roots since the 90’s. Longer the blade the better. Might go thru a lot of blades but it’s worth saving the back!
Very smart idea. Used that tool back on a few jobs. I've been digging tree stumps out and learned to find the roots from the base of the tree, expose them some, and use loppers to snip the roots. After that it pops right out every time! That's the only "digging" I need to do! Saves time, energy and you feel better about the result making that $$$$ 🤙
Arbs have a bunch of smaller fibrous roots and even the anchor roots aren't very big. How does this work on small hardwood trees or something like a yew that has a much chunkier and deeper root ball? I'm also curious how this would work in soil with alot of gravel or rocks. And how does putting a sawzall into the dirt affect lifetime of the tool? Even so, thus is an awesome hack. I guess I'll have to try it and find out the limit of this technique. Even if it only works in limited circumstances, it's still going to be alot more profitable than subbing out all those little stumps.
I use the sawzaw to split bamboo. Those roots are brutal and the sawzaw does the job. I'm definitely going to try this as we just bought some property and we've got a lot of land to clear.

Man thank you. In the process of removing 3 bushes, got all the brrush taken care of but was wonder how the heck id get the stumps out. Problem solved. Thanks!
Great idea! I have that same sawzall I will have to try it. Another option is to use a come along. Tie the come along from one stump to the other. The strongest stump will be the last one left. Then use the sawzall to finish it off.
I'm on my process of cutting bushes and shrubs that sorrounded our front yard, gosh! What a task specially to a petite woman like me. But thank you that I found this video. I may wanna try doing this for the deep roots removal since I literally cut off the branches already. Hahhh!!!
I’ve been using my Milwaukee and my Ryobi saws and the Milwaukee is easily tens times better with the exact same blade. My wife loved that I was using it to prune too. Wasn’t sure how to get the roots out. You made that look too easy!!!

I've been running diablo 12" pruning blade's. I got 2 of the big cordless Milwaukee saw zals I keep 3 9amp batteries charged and one 12 amp fully charged at all times.
If it hasn't been mentioned yet get yourself some low tooth count pruning blades. They even make carbide tip ones that last quite a bit longer. They sell them everywhere (HD,LOWES,AMAZON, etc...) you will find a lot of uses for that saw in landscaping projects. Also I would recommend trying a full sawzall since you can get a whole lot more leverage rocking the saw back and forth.
This is great but it’s good to remember that arbor vitae have very shallow root systems. I’ll be trying this on barberry shrubs. They have wicked thorns. I plan to use large wire tires to help bundle and drop into tall leaf bags.
I just tried this earlier because I saw your video last night. Man! Did this save me a lot of work and a lot of trouble today. I was doing the same using the axe and the shovel 🤦♂️
Wow! Thank you so much. I’ve been trying to get some old bushes out and though of a come-along/winch, saw something using an engine lift, was thinking of a backhoe, and thank God I saw this first before getting into the job. Going this route first for sure! Thanks again for your video.
I've always used my 95 Z71 Chevy. Put her in 4 low with a tow strap, and usually pulls them right out! I will admit however it does tend to leave marks in the yard lol I obviously don't have a landscape business, but next time I decide to pull any bushes around here I will definitely keep your method in mind. Thanks!
Thank you for posting this method! I didn’t have the same type sawzaw you had, but I used the blade you recommended in my basic two handed model. I had this large impossible holly bush stump next to my back door, with this method I was able to remove it in about one hour of diligence and digging. I felt like it almost killed me bc I’m no landscaper lol thanks for the help!
Ya, I've always found it easiest to wrap a cable around it and pull it out with an auto. Truck is good, car is OK, heavy mini van is the best. I've even pulled trees out with a pt cruiser. Understanding leverage is great, but when you have a cable and a car its not necessary unless they are really stubborn
I am working on a quote and I am looking at pricing. I re watched this video and I love this video. I love when you say that a UA-camr said I just use my sawsall. Love that line.
I love your video Keith I’m literally starting my company basically in the same aspect as you did but of course I’m doing me! Anyways I just wanted to say thank you for all your wisdom it really makes the difference for the little guy. 🤝
Frank Checo I did. We removed some holly bushes, and we managed to cut all the lateral roots at the surface, but it smoked our battery and the roots were still solid. We had to chop it out the old fashioned way. I need a better sawzall to be fair.
I'm 66. I think I'm still pretty tuff, but digging out shrubs was....just too much. Wow- got out the big yellow DeWalt. Game changer. Geez- Life Saver! SUBBED!

Glad it helped!
I use my Sawsall gardening cutting out blackberry roots/crowns and for cutting trenches in my lawn.
Wow! Thank you so much. I’ve been trying to get some old bushes out and though of a come-along/winch, saw something using an engine lift, was thinking of a backhoe, and thank God I saw this first before getting into the job. Going this route first for sure! Thanks again for your video.
You're very welcome!
Tried this last year, works great!
Thanks!
Great tip!
The 10 inch pruning blades are a real game changer.
Hollies are the WORST! I removed one last year and it took forever. The bulb was huge.
😊
Took out some crazy running bamboo with this method, I used 9" pruning blades. Works a treat.
Nice
Omg.. the guy should be on the landscaping hall fame .. for that info.. 👍
Please. Haha I'd love that.
LMAO, great video! Mil makes a blade called "The Axe" that will reduce your costs! Thank you Keith, awesome as usual!
OMG that is nuts, I have worked all day just on one.
Love this guys personality!
Thank you for this video and the humor. Going to try this in my yard now 🤞
Try the pruning blades. They should last a lot longer than a regular wood cutting blade.
AWESOME. Thanks for the tip. Your videos always provide good content. Will be trying this trick in the next few weeks.
Great to hear!
I am working on a quote and I am looking at pricing. I re watched this video and I love this video. I love when you say that a UA-camr said I just use my sawsall. Love that line.
Glad it was helpful!
@@keith-kalfas check your email. I am thinking $75/bush and there is a little joke in the email
Thanks. Did it...Worked like a charm!
Excellent!
I love your video Keith I’m literally starting my company basically in the same aspect as you did but of course I’m doing me! Anyways I just wanted to say thank you for all your wisdom it really makes the difference for the little guy. 🤝
Best of luck!
I've used the sawzall to drop a sixteen inch maple. Pretty amazing tool.
Too good to be true. I’ll try this though. Can’t imagine it working well on a red tip, but I’ve learned to try things even if I don’t believe it. 👍
You try it?
Frank Checo I did. We removed some holly bushes, and we managed to cut all the lateral roots at the surface, but it smoked our battery and the roots were still solid. We had to chop it out the old fashioned way. I need a better sawzall to be fair.
Buy the 9-15 inch Diablo pruning blades . They last along time if your only cutting roots
I'm 66. I think I'm still pretty tuff, but digging out shrubs was....just too much.
Wow- got out the big yellow DeWalt. Game changer. Geez- Life Saver! SUBBED!
Thank you!!! I have the m18 sawzall and plenty of blades and stumps.
Will be trying this tomorrow.
Good luck!
We use a chainsaw and axe but the saw fills with dirt. Thanks for tip Keith😊
Haha I used to do that too.
@@keith-kalfas its a pain to clean out all the dirt from the saw bro.
What a great video…such a good idea and so much easier than digging and chopping👍
This is a tip to get fired up about 🔥
Haha. Yes. Because it's one of those things...that totally changes everything.
Keith, thanks for generously sharing your valuable experiences. You are a good, honest hardworking man. If it were possible, I would feel honored and priveledge to know you and have your friendship. Take care. All the best to you.
I appreciate that!
