@@Charles-Pettibone 😂😂😂
That guy swears he heard it on the show
The title is more like "Tywin unknowingly saves Robert's son and heir, and compliments a Stark"
@pratik bhandari no way ! He is the master of politics and knowing there are not one but TWO THREATS TO THE THRONE. HE would definitely kill them.
@@freedomprayer007 He might kill Gendry but he wouldn't *kill* Arya. She was far too valuable as a hostage.
@@thebiglebrowski3695 agreed.
@pratik bhandari if he knew their identity, Aria would be captured and Gendy killed in a blink.
Son yes, Heir no. Gendry is a bastard. The only reason he was Lord of Storm's End by the end of the show was because he was legitimized by royal decree as there were no other Baratheons left.
That’s a true Boss. Rides in and doesn’t stop to relax and clean up. Goes right to work making sure things are running right
@soldiers and cops are welfare whores *Writer
@soldiers and cops are welfare whores Those two morons couldn't come up with this shit. In this particular season, they were still taking from the books which means this scene was written by Martin, not by Dumb and Dumber.
@Rory Yeah. I couldn't help but chuckle at the irony of the previous couple of responses praising this scene & the entire Tywin/Arya dynamic on behalf of George R.R. Martin, while insulting D&D when this was strictly a creation of the show. It's actually one of the few instances of changes from the books that I feel worked out for the better.
Tywin didn't fuck around
Nahh. A true boss cleans up and has sex with all his servants.... oh wait
Tywin Lannister - Wisest man among all the 7 kingdoms. He had one weakness, and that was his hatred for his son Tyrion, which got him killed ultimately.
It really shouldn't have though. Only reason Tywin died was because Tyrion was a dumbass and didn't plea guilty and ask for mercy. That would've gotten him sent to the North where he could've lived out his days. He lost his trial by combat and would've died had Jaime not let him out. It was only because of random bullshit working out in Tyrion's favor that when he escaped Tywin couldn't even run or dodge the arrows.
If Tywin was anywhere but the area where Tyrion was escaping he'd have no chance of dying. So to call it a "weakness" is incorrect.
@@HaloLvl43Legit It was a weakness though. While the amount of coincidences that had to happen that allowed Tyrion to kill Tywin was quite high, Tyrion was the only child he had that held a similar intellect. If Tywin had stoked this intelligence instead of chastising Tyrion at every chance he got, he would have had a suitable heir to hold the Lannister's legacy high.
@@HaloLvl43Legit why would tyrion confess a murder when he didn't commit it?
“Hatred is the downfall of all men. Big and small alike”
The true irony of Tywin's failure is it stemmed from the very common, human sense of losing what mattered most to him. In that case, his wife. Tywin crushed rebellions, enabled usurpers, and so on because he approached things with shrewd, calculated tact.
And yet, what sank him had nothing to do with that. At least on the show he never seems to hate Tyrion for being a dwarf, but rather for "killing" his wife and disrespecting what was essentially Tywin's only precious, painfully cultivated resource; his family reputation. The man got him killed, not the monster.
Ive scrolled through dozens of comments and not a one has mentioned Tywin’s wardrobe. Holy hot damn he looks like an emperor
I love that it's a perfect combination of ostentatious and practical.
The red is so simple but powerful
Yes he DOES.
He pretty much was an emperor in all but name. He was the richest man in the world, who was really the real power behind King Joffrey,
He looks like Robocop.
He’s played as a villain, but at the end of the day, there’s no one I’d want on my side more than him.
Thats the thing about Lawful Evil, at least you know where they stand.
I'm not sure what makes Tywin more of a villain than anyone else
@@martyneugene357 Exactly. His point about his actions regarding the red wedding saving hundreds if not thousands of lives is crucial.
Well said.
He is smart but all he cares about is the family name. That's why he betrayed thhe mad king and had his lineage killed before Rob even had the chance. The moment your actions go against the benefit of Lannister name, he will stab you from the back.
Fun fact: being a cup bearer was a very respectable position. Back in the 1st century those who were cup bearers to kings were highly trusted. It was considered an honor to guard the king's cup. They were also given positions of authority as well and had direct contact with king himself.
Being a cup bearer was a big deal. It was no small position, it was a position of much honor and respect.
Years before and after that even. Sargon of Akkad, first ruler of the Akkadian Empire and said by some to be the first emperor ever, was cup-bearer to the Sumerian king Ur-Zababa in the 23rd century BC, just over 2 & 1/4 thousand years before 1AD.
And on the other side of that, the heads of the House of Althann were appointed cup-bearer to the Holy Roman Emperor in 1714, and each generation served that role until the empire's collapse in 1806.
There was also a high-ranking cup-bearer and deputy cup-bearer for the King-Grand Duke of Poland and Lithuania right up until they split back into two countries in 1795. And considering the more feudalistic tendencies of central and Eastern Europe around that time, I'd imagine there were a lot more besides.
To be honest, its only really in Britain that it stopped being a useful or important thing. Its probably where GRRM got his depiction of the role for Westeros from tbh; after a while, I'm pretty sure the English and Scottish kings just started using prisoners on a carrot-and-stick basis.
Carrot = Accept this task and you'll be given new living quarters and possibly the chance to be set free once I've done with ya; Stick = Don't accept, or accept and poison me yourself, and you'll be executed publicly and your village will be taxed to high heaven after you've died as punishment for your crimes.
I know this is way too wordy a reply for a comment left 2 years ago, but its such an interesting topic so rarely mentioned that when I see it, I tend to unload all of the information I have about it hahahaha
That makes sense. Having access to the king provides it's own rewards and opportunities. It is a place of privilege.
"this ones a girl. you idiot. dressed as a boy, why?"
"safer to travel my lord"
"smart. more than i can say for this lot"
that is one of my favorite exchanges in the whole show. most of the rest are between these two characters as well.
The best part is that after Tywin says "more than I can say for this lot" the soldier looks at him with the most confused dumbass face ever seen on television. lol
@@darth3261 Part of me thinks that might have been ad-libbed with the reaction.

He brings it up later, but you know 100% that Tywin caught her saying "My Lord" and not "m'lud" this first time.
Also didnt kneel

@@josephleonard6695 That's kinda OP's whole point. Arya gave herself away as a highborn by not bowing to Tywin and demonstrating an above average education, law that would typically apply to commoners of the standard she is attempting to disguise herself as. How does your reply even have likes?
If Tywin only knew he had a Stark and Baratheon there.
Technically Gendry wasnt a true baratheon at the time
No he was the only Baratheon at that time besides Stannis...
Charles Dance was so perfect for this role.
"I need a new cupbearer."
One day I will use that quote, I swear.
I did, on a date. Didnt work out
First time i watched the show, i didn't know what a "cup bearer" was and i thought he said "cock bearer". Ngl, I was a bit afraid for Arya...
Loved how cold and calculated this character was the actor is absolutely brilliant
The way he says "you idiot" cracks me up
The best commander of his time, honestly.
And a man fit to be king.
And even tho he wasn't, everyone feared him as if he were.
Tywin is actually a very poor military commander .
@@niccolorichter1488 Yeah most likely but he had good generals/commanders. Stannis was said to be one of the best military commanders in Westeros.
I wouldn’t say commander but rather the best leader.
Lord or general most like . His commander days has long ended .
"Do you really think a crown gives you power?" - Tywin Lannister
Tywin reminds you that despite how it usually works in fiction, one can be a very bad person but not a monster.
It's been years but I still have to say this. That crimson cloth around the armor looks so elegant and heroic
Tywin is a cool character because he is downright vicious in dealing with his enemies but he has moments of pragmatic, not kindness exactly, but something. I get the sense that in addition to needing a cup bearer, he just knew what would happen if he identified her as a girl and left her under the control of that guard.
Ngl I doubt Tywin would care. He just needed a cup bearer and recognised her smartness. The fact of what he let the mountain do to oberyns sister and children makes me think he couldn’t care less of what happens to her
@@harveyhodgson8782
I don't think that he'd be particularly concerned but Tywin was seldom needlessly cruel. His cruelty was generally a means to an end. If nothing else, he wouldn't have wanted to "reward" the guards that he was annoyed with for doing a sh*t job.
@@bryanalexander7571 He dumped his needless cruelty onto Tyrion. Tywin’s idea of blowing off steam was making his youngest child hate their own existence.
@@jackzimmy8461
Well, that's where the word "seldom" comes into play. His grudge against Tyrion is certainly an exception. I didn't mean to imply that Tywin wasn't a d*ck and a villain though.

He is 6ft4 or 192 cm in height.
When Tywin looks up at the night sky, the stars make a wish.

We were all so lucky for this series to be made. So many new faces, and it was refreshing to watch them show their talents. It seems that these new faces were some of the best ever to occupy our time in front of a tv for many years.
Tywin should be the lord of roasting. Every scene involves him doing that🤣
He was always destroying his oldest grandson, lol.
Charles Dance does such an amazing job as Tywin. Definitely my favorite character, both books and series.
Charles Dance was born to play this role. Literal perfect casting.
Weird thing, but I love how he says "You idiot" lmao
One of many scenes why i respect Tywin. Man knew how to get shit done
I love how he says "you idiot" so casual
It has to be fatiguing for him. He's constantly surrounded by people who are, compared to him, lazy idiots. He's trying to secure a legacy of dominance for his house, the only thing he cares about, and everyone else around him is making careless mistakes and then taking naps.
Tyrion is everything Tywin is + a heart
Tywin had a heart but it died when his wife died
Charles Dance is always a boss..everywhere he goes, he just commands respect.
>arrives a day earlier
>frees the prisoner
>doesn't elaborate
>leaves
The real OG sigma male
Tywin was a hard and even cruel man... but if he’d been given a chance to be in charge with no psychopath to manage, it would have very likely been a win for everyone.
It was a win for the entire seven kingdoms when he was hand of the king even with a mad man on the throne. Imagine if he was king.
@@redswift31 He doesn't want to be king, from what I can guess by his conduct. He's quite happy being useful to the king.
kereminde nope, he is the true king but he wants to pull the strings behind the scene just like the illuminati.
He didn't rise to power just to serve some fool kings, they're living in his shadow.
@@danarsarkawt2694 No, that's Littlefinger.
That crimson cloth around the armor looks so damm good
Best armor in the whole show, he carries it perfectly
Everyone always admires how smart Tywin is, and im like "where do you think Tyrion got his intelligence from?"
This only difference between the 2 is Tywin has no heart, at all. It died when his wife died in childbirth
It happens
Yet he is no villain
tyrion was half the man tywin was
Imagine arriving right in time to stop your men from killing a young smith. Tywin would have gladly taken Gendry up as a smith for their armies, and being so young he should develop into a fine smith under the proper guidance, which Tywin surely would have provided. If he hadn't arrived, they would have lost a sizeable asset.
In the book it was Roose Bolton instead of Tywin Lannister. This is one of the few changes the show did that was actually good.
Damn Tywin was a strong character...even his casual words n actions commanded power n respect...charles dance made the character even more powerful..
Guard: What are you looking at? Kneel! Or I’ll carve out your lungs out, boy.
Tywin: You would do no such thing. This one’s a girl, you idiot!
Tywin: Dressed up as a boy- why?
Arya: Safer to travel, milord.
Tywin: Smart. More than I can say for this lot.
Guard: 2:12 👁👄👁
I am late to this party, but I watched a super cut and I realized he knew she was high born as soon as she said my lord. I guess he figured she could make a good hostage and kept her close.
I really liked tywin he was among my favorite characters i liked his relationship with arya how he talked to her like a daughter i know he doesn't even talk to his children the way he talks to her and i know even if he had found out arya he still won't change the way he sees her
Charles Dance is brilliant in this cunning and ruthless as Twyin Lannister
This shows how good Tywin in managing things , . . . He wouldve been a great king if he got a chance.
"This one's a girl, you idiot"
why is this line so funny?!
imagine having an exchange of words with one of the most feared players in westeros
especially if you weren't noble
I was afraid that this would lead to Tywin being gross to Arya, but it didn't. Charles Danse for Emperor.
Tywin had such a sensible side to him. He wasn’t always so bad. Such a great character. It sucks that this show committed suicide in season 8.
Charles Dance added a swagger to Tywin that's not present in the books.
It says something about how evil/cruel you are when your boss, infamous for trapping and drowning a rival family in their own mines and overseeing the brutal sack of a city/ordering the murder of children, shows up and acts far more merciful than you to your prisoners’ relief
tywin never acted in cruelty if there was no point in it. He drowned a rival family because he wanted his family to be feared, as if they are feared it will act as a shield against anyone harming them. He had the children murdered to keep anyone from gathering around them to rebel.
What they were doing was both wasteful and stupid.
I think this shows tywin is ruthless not cruel. He doenst enjoy torture of killing like joffrey or the mountain. He just does what he think is needs to be done for the survival and rise to power of his family.
Think what you want about Tywinn, he was a complete badass and brilliant in almost every way
Lannisters are truely the best casted and most interesting chracters, Because of them I used to wait for the scenes of Kings landing, they were all chaos yet so perfect, so similar yet so unique in their style. This family is so much fun.
they were assholes, but definitely the most interesting to watch
this interrogator is the bravest man in the castle, he didn't even stand up in front of Lord Tywin
no matter how much you hate Tywin, if he calls you "smart", you smile
Tywin may be brutal and ruthless, but he doesn't kill without reason. Everything he does is in service to a goal.
Tywin was as authorative as he was sharp. I would have loved to see a young him in combat.
Tywin and Charles Dance was the best part of this series
One thing that's noticable here is that Maisie Williams' acting skill. She really deteriorated as time passed. She was brilliant in first three seasons or so, then it's just her glaring throughout the show.
I think that's more to do with the writing. The first 3 seasons in general are probably the best
@@RhodokTribesman

Tywin may have been the most ruthless man in Westeros, but he was never wasteful with lives.
it's crazy how Jaq'n Hagar could have easily ended Tywin at harren-hall without anyone being able to do anything or even know what happened
Honestly i wish tywin lasted longer in the show. Seeing him work was just plain awsome
I want to go back to how I felt when I first watched this
The voice of the old mountain is so good. He sounds like the narrator from Dungeon Keeper 2
'SMART'!!!! That stamp of approval.
I must say, Lord Tywin, that outfit was fire!
"If you acquire a reputation as a mad dog, you'll be treated as a mad dog. Taken out back and slaughtered for pig feed."
This was the first time Tywin saved the day by just showing up. The second time was at The Battle of Kings Landing.
Please reupload this, because i can still see at this quality.
Love Tywin ..
You can tell at 2:10 that the soldier really thought about saying something to Tywin but then quickly decided against it lol
The fella doing the interrogation has got to be the laziest interrogator alive. Asks the same questions knowing full well that people aren't from the same area.
Brilliant scene
00:55 Charles dance is just majestic.
Netflix adaptation:
"This one is a girl..."
"Ahem, sorry, I'm not a girl"
"What is she talking about?"
"Uhm, they, not she"
...
Arya not kneeling because she's high born and never has. Great touch.
Still my favorite show
Days when every scene from old GoT was epic!
CHILLS
That man radiates pure power
That armor is so tight
Always like that scene
I like how Tywin looks around in what looks like an "Are you serious" at the guards when Gendry told them he is a Smith. Smiths were an incredibly valuable trade in the Medieval times, and especially for an army at war due to what they could make and maintain. Even if they were concerned about him being a spy or unsure how good he was, they could assign him to the simpler and more mundane tasks of a smithy and let a smith who was either better or more trusted work on more important projects. Tywin may not have cared about people that much but he certainly looked to see what could be used to his and his families advantage instead of just wasting or writing off resources.
Can't believe they put Fred Weasley's head on a spike after Hogwarts
I like how he say smart with a head movement 😅
"Smart"
"No, its Stark"
"What🤨"
That moment when you get hired on spot !! 😂😂
I just realised, she says "My Lord".
Tywin instantly knew she was of noble status.
Tywin the best Lannister
Such a nice armor.
Tywin. Ruthless. Unfeeling. Unremorseful. Merciless. Rational. Fair. Intelligent. Resourceful. Unyielding.
A true leader.
Tywin was such a wonderfully complex character. He was a cold hearted bastard but he had an odd sense of humor and it was so easy to hate him. And when his character finally got what he had coming, it was one of those moments where, as a fan, you are thrilled to see it, but at the same time, it's depressing because you know the show is about to lose one of the most interesting characters played by a brilliant actor.
Just what Tywin's typical day looks like. Come in, dominate everyone, leave.
I never noticed she said "my lord" in this scene which tipped Tywin off.
I knew it happened later but not this scene.
All these tweets from 4 plus years ago. They have no idea what’s coming. What an absolute twist.
that armor looks badass
Omg who can't love Tywin in this scène !!! Plus the face of the guard when Tywin tells him he's a dumb twat! OMG !
gods the show was strong back then!
One of the few moments I really liked Tywin. A gentle tyrant.
I wish Daddy Tywin would praise me for being smart. 😔
