    Hi Adam great Video of the shaper and the mill work. Reminds me of the the time the company I worked for brought a Russia hydraulic shaper with a 24 inch stroke to build a roll former with 8 stations to do the bases and guides for the bearing houses to fit on. Love the part where Abby showed us the gift and the ring that Robin hand crafted for her. Robin did a beautiful job of it and to see Abby's response was great.
    The old saying all great things take time, your workshop is one of them. Keep well and enjoy your time with Abby.

    Great SNS, that ring looks great! Love the shaper work, great grind on the tool, the chips look perfect, I'm sure your Dad was looking over your shoulder smiling! Grinding tool bits is a science in itself, you've nailed it! I'm glad you're getting more clips at work, it adds another dimension to your channel.

Way to go, Robin :-) Nice to see two people obviously enjoying each others company and making each other happy, and after some not-so-good times, glad some happiness has come your way Adam. Take care of each other you guys, and looking forward to see you getting the shop enclosure back on track. Look forward to and enjoy each and every one of your videos, Adam… so keep up the excellent work. Thanks for all that you do. Mark (in the UK)

    Hey Adam, it is at least 30 years ago that I used a shaper for the last time, but when feeding over a horizontal plane, the clapper box is usually put in the upright position, when a vertical cut at the sides has to be made the clapper box is tilted.
    Nice video again.

    I noticed when I was teaching at the vocational school they had a back stop in front of the shaper to keep the chips (and maybe broken tools) from flying across the lab. Watch for scrap lumber on your project and you could make one for your shaper (make it big enough for future larger shaper). Great work and video. I bet Abby was thrilled with that ring. Greg

    Hey Adam - nice to see you two happy together - warms the cockles it does :-)
    I think you may have had the shaper feed during its cutting stroke - or else it was an optical illusion. It makes heck of a difference when your taking a decent cut - take a look at your feed crank - it should be on the opposite side of center to how it is when your feeding in the direction right to left.. Great video as usual - you are a pleasure to watch. All the best Mat

    Awesome mix of machining this week! I too use the shaper to clean up flame-cut edges to save on cutters/inserts; I have a 14" Gould & Eberhardt and a 24" Rockford Hydraulic HD. Turning your block 90° would have saved about 1/3 of the shaper time. Kinda surprised that you're stepover feeds are so limited; both of mine will feed +.100"/stroke, and surface finish is best for me at .030"-.040". 24-inchers are common enough, you need to get an "ABOM SIZED" 30-36" shaper..... Excellent work on the HBM & cylinders; thanks again for another great video!

    Many contractors are honest and competent. Problems arise when it comes to picking out who is who. I grew up in the business because Dad had a reputable business. Learned the trades. Don't lose faith, Adam. I'm happy seeing your shop come together. You'll get there and it will be worth it.

    • @Abom79

      First guy I dealt with was a wannbe that talked a good game to get his foot in the door. Turned out to be a bum who didn't have the resources or knowhow, or want, to get the job done.

    • @3347861
      @3347861 7 років тому

      So sorry that the bum crossed your path. I'm seeing an alarming lack of respect for the skilled trades lately. I will never dismiss the value of higher education... I hold a Master's degree. But in the real world, the skilled trades are huge and there are way too many wannabes..... Just so happens that a good friend and fellow army vet had the same issue as you recently. On my advice he fired them. They have the audacity to be hounding him for money after damaging his home. Disgusting. My neighbor is a legitimate, skilled contractor who will make things right. I've introduced them and work will commence soon. As a side note, I have twin boys who are learning to work with their hands and are being taught to value and respect craftsmanship. I see this as doing my part to address the above issues and simply being a good father. Keep doing what you're doing, Adam. You're truly a class act and craftsman who has earned his stripes!

    Given where you live and the type of ground conditions you have, the concrete choice and construction method you plan to use, is an excellent plan. You won't regret it and it will not have to be redone.
    For your backpatio area, you might want to consider just a tad more depth and instead go to 14' if you can swing the cost. Believe it or not, by the time you set up a decent size table, chairs and have walking space around it when people are around it, you're gonna be glad you did. But you don't have to make the entire length wider, just the area around the table position - which will probably around your rear door entrance, which is the biggest reason to go wider.
    The best way to solve that is to use a half kidney shape in that section of patio. So maybe 12 feet deep for the corners of the home and then 14 - 16' deep in the kidney - table - rear door entrance area. A good contractor will be able to form that up without any difficult or extra cost (except for the additional required concrete).
    Thanks for showing how a Shaper can actually save money on tooling. Never even thought of how flame cut material can beat the crap out of tooling. Really enjoyed this episode.
    Btw, finished 9th at Peterborough Speedway last night!

    I use boring bar style tool holders on the shaper all the time to do internal bore keys. We build them to fit through the flapper head and put a lock on the side of the head for finishing. No need for the boring bar head to fit the pin-slot style toolholder. You get more stroke that way too. The boring bar has a large thread for a nut at the flapper end so you can "bolt" it into the head in a rigid way. Lets say the bar is 1-1/2", the nut will be for a 2" bar or large enough for the inside diameter of the nut to slide over the length of the 1-1/2" bar. A flat washer up against the flapper head and you're rockin'! We always use REX95 tools for shaping too. They hold an edge to the heat and abuse better than the typical cobalt HHS tool.

  • @Steve_Just_Steve
    @Steve_Just_Steve 7 років тому

    I'm sure you know this and you just "rebar" for layman's, but just in case... Where you tie into the existing bldg with your expansion material inbetween you want to use a smooth "slip dowel" and if your guy's really good they'll be epoxy coated with greased plastic caps on the end. I definitely recommend extra 2" thickened edges about 4" wide all the way around and I always use a 3/4" recycled crushed concrete (crusher run) as a base instead of sand (not that much more $) but i'm sure either will be fine with the steel reinforcing grid. Very happy to hear that it sounds like you got someone that knows what they're doing and takes a lil pride in it. Thanks for all the great vids man.

    • @Abom79
      @Abom79  7 років тому +1

      +Steve just Steve The rebar will be epoxy'd into the existing shop slab then connected together with another cross piece from what I understand. The man sounds like he knows just what to do. He knows I want a strong slab that won't bust under heavy loads.

    Hi from Aus. Shapers are a learning curve for us all. I'd suggest 40-44 strokes / min and cut in the direction of the longest side. A big block like that might require a plate bolted to the table vertical side, a stopper block on top at the front and low profile clamps on the other side. I'm very good at propelling work pieces across the floor.

    Hi Adam,
    Had to laugh when you said you weren't in a hurry - If you are in a hurry you sure ain't using a shaper to get it done quick.
    Suggest you take a look at shear cut grind for finishing tools on the shaper. Depth of cut is 5 thou or so but much bigger step over and can make a finish *almost* as good as a surface grinder.

    Hi Adam another great video of wonderful machining, Thanks for showing the giant face mill at least from my POV. I most likely would never encounter a mill that size in my whole life it was neat seeing it work and your shaper might be small by your standard but that machine would be a great fit into my shop to help build modle steam engines and or other small little wonders, average size of finished piece around hear is under 3 inches measured in any direction but maybe height.
    have a good day and a better tomorrow

    Regarding the shop enhancement, all things considered, switching builders won't present a long term problem. Sure, it was a disappointment to not have the first guy get it all done. But the pause has allowed you to think some things through and adjust your plans. Now, if you need under slab plumbing for the new patio (for a sink), coordinate that with site prep guys and a plumber. Plan for post bases too so that they can be set during the pour.

    Looks like something during shaping isnt tightened down properly or is it just the table flexing? 16:40

      The table doesn't seem to be moving, it's the angle plate flexing. 19:33
      Possibly using two strap clamps in the outer slots instead of the single one in the middle slot might help, it did look better in the middle. Possibly one of those things you notice much more in the video than when standing next to it.

      Atlantic Film Looks like 11 other people didn't watch the video either. I don't understand how they managed to watch everything except the several times he talks about the flexing.

      yeah @17:28 you can see the block lifting up on the cutting side, but looks to cut the same as every other pass. all he is doing is to clean up the voids

    Hey, this is rather off topic for this video, but you mentioning the heat and humidity reminded me about you talking about the air conditioning unit and your plans with that and moving forward with the enclosure(I think this was back with the guy who had started the work) and I totally understand that you've got the system and you only have so much of a budget for this project, so this is more of a down the road idea maybe, unless someone has already mentioned it. Have you thought of or considered having a mini-split air conditioning system installed? A company I used to work for installed quite a few of them, even in a local foundry. They are super efficient and I believe could keep that shop at a reasonable temperature. They are also very quiet which could be further beneficial to making videos and just that much less noise to deal with in general also fairly quick and easy to install, even with a finish building so it'd still be pretty easy to do down the road. Anyway, not sure if it's been suggested or not, just an idea that popped into my head

      +Jacob Mello I have the new never used wall mount unit that's being installed this week. It'll provide more then enough cooling for the shop.

      Abom79 ah right! I remember you showing that before now, can't wait to see how the addition turns out, keep up the great videos!

      Jacob Mello I agree mini splits are great. The condensing units can be mounted in convenient place and the indoor units can be mounted high on the wall out of the way.

      +Jacob Mello I was talking to fernando the other day about mini split units and he was telling me that you can now order them for about $800 shipped. He said the internals are built exactly like the Mitsubishi units. I'm keeping that in mind if the window unit doesn't work good in the new addition.

      That Liebert package unit is a top of the line piece of cooling machinery. If it is new (hasn't been abused or some other form of damage) you will have a strong machine for a long time. Liebert products are typically used in areas such as data centers where mission critical systems are required. This is a good (and expensive) unit. You got a heck of a deal there! You mentioned it has a capacity of 18,000btuh (1.5 ton). With the excessive humidity and heat in your area, I hope this is enough capacity. Oh well, give it a shot and let us know.

    Hi Adam,
    really nice SNS this time!
    I really love the shaper work you are doing! Nice to see one of these old and seemingly outdated machines still being put to life.
    During the first cut of the shaper work you mentioned the flexing of the angle plate and I noticed that you can have a really good look at that flexing at around 21:55
    Another thing I noticed about your tool: I was always told during vocational training that I should avoid the getting this annealing color on your tool as it significantly lowers the hardness of your tool.
    But on your tool I think I noticed some of that color but I may be wrong.
    Do you mind digging into that topic a little in a future video? I and I think a lot of other people would really enjoy that.
    Greetings from Germany
    Christian

      +ApeX2411 Discoloring of the tool but from grinding does not affect the hardness. It's high speed tool steel and can handle red all the heat you can throw at it.

    I find it crazy that a slow cut from the shaper can still create enough heat for the oil to vaporize !

    Great, I fell behind on Abom's videos and missed the wall AC unit going up. So here I am catching up just to see that... Man I'm such a boring sod. It's in by #185, and this is the earliest of the missed ones, so not like it's a huge amount to watch.

    You got some Very good footage Adam, I was loving the mill, I was listening to that machine load up and slow down and was wondering, is it going to push that big face mill?? Very nice. Nice shaper footage also you did like 7 different angles. Lots of work in this video. Great job as always. SteveSummers
