The signs of punk can be traced further back than Mercer Arts and CBGB's. I explore one of the lesser talked about pioneers of proto punk, The Sonics, in this next video: ua-cam.com/video/f5ENuJ6v4ko/v-deo.html
As a British kid in the 80's and huving really young parents who had me at 17 my folks got me into The Sex Pistols and my love for punk rock was born from that. It then led me to discovering bands like The Ramones, Talking Heads, The Dead boys and of course Television who is my favourite band from that whole CBGB's scene. Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers are a very close second.
It's always so interesting that Television was the first band to make CBGB's the home of what would become Punk, however, they were one of the last bands to put out an album from the scene, with Marquee Moon coming out in early '77, 1 to 2 years after Blondie, Patti Smith, and the Ramones released their first albums. At the same time, I'm glad they waited, because MM is one of the best albums of all time, and transcends the label of Punk. It's funny that the OMFUG part eventually got dropped from the name of the club, as that's exactly what the club ended up catering too: Other Music For Uplifting Gourmandizers. Gourmandizers here could refer to music fans looking for the next big music scene, from Punk, to New Wave, to Goth, to Alternative.
Absolutely. It was well worth the wait for sure though. They should have dropped the CBGB’s part and left the OMFUG. Doesn’t have the same ring to it though…
The Television part is what I hear most, but I don’t hear or see much out there in Merced Arts Center’s impact on the origins of punk and the rise of CBGB’s
This is something I knew yet said it wrong anyway 🤦♂️ I blame it on me being on the cusp of the worst cold I’ve had in a decade. Thanks for chiming in!
@@AndyFenstermakerI hear you, I sometimes catch doing similar things. I should have mentioned that the show was great. I’m from NY and have gotten to meet some of the legends that survived that era, yet I had barely heard of the Mercer, so thanks for the info.
I actually know a James nearly identical to the man speaking. Though I will have to reopen the app to see if it resyncs the audio to mouth movements. My headphones may have picked up some latency. Happens every now and then.
Ha! Fenster actually means “window” in German. Maker was changed at some point in history from the German version “macher.” Theoretically, I believe relatives from centuries ago made stain glass windows for churches 🤷♂️ How do you know this James person and where are they from?
No way, it caught my notice as I'd been watching things about the conflict in Ukraine, and the situation in Russia. When you said your name I thought Defenestration, as Defenestration means to throw someone or something out of a window. So my subconscious mind started rolling word games with Fenstermaker and Defenestrator, around in my head as I get words stuck in the back of my brain. Then minor word games. The logical progression, a Fenstermaker, Windowmaker, Defenstermaker, Widowmaker. You look a lot like a guy who married a woman who was a close friend of mine as a teenager. From NoVA, MD area. Probably a bit younger than him, believe he'd be. Very talented couple, she was always creative, brilliant, and he is a musician, though he has many creative fields, I believe professionally Multi instrumentalist, does some recording and mixing, can't remember if that was his job. I know they do some clever videos occasionally, podcast sometimes. Haven't been close in years, basically only keep in touch FB. Always impressed by the things they , and he come up with. Be it photos, quips, podcast. I feel bad I can't remember his current musical status. I have always been impressed they linked up, no 2 people are a better fit for each other. Anyway, look like him, though he still could pass for 30s, you look like his younger brother. They have a one syllable B name, common English sounding. The name Andrew, (Andy to anyone who knew me from before 18), my Dad always said was Scottish. He had grumbled a bit being Irish. But in a twist the Grandfather I got it from was Ukrainian. His parents picked it as he was born not long after they got off the boat. So all 6 sons got Apostle names like a Catholic school classroom back in the day. The pressures to assimilate.

Very good urban history, bravo! So cool to see old photos of the building - after seeing rock photos decades ago
Glad you liked it! I love doing deep dives like this!

I need to listen to the Heartbreakers more, that’s for sure. Some good stuff in there! Thanks for chiming in and checking out the vid!

Thank you , this video should be known by any punk rocker. Remerber Stiv Bators's song. Crimen in the streets.

Subbed.....and liked! -thanks!
Thanks for the sub!
The location is pronounced "Gren-Itch" Village, not "Green-Witch" Village, despite how it's spelled.

Curious how one goes about making a Fenster. As a fellow Andy any tips would be appreciated.
