It’s called Cajón, and it’s an Afro Peruvian instrument. Taken from Peru by Paco de Lucia to Sevilla, Spain, introduced it to the Flamenco music and introduced it that way to europe and subsequently to the rest of the world.
Since then it exist a lot of Add-ons and modifications to it.
Nothing beats the original sound in an acoustic room tho.
Not many people care to give credit to the enslaved african people and it’s descendants who created such a versatile instrument with the resources they had while surviving the ordeals of oppression by the Spaniards in a land they adopted as theirs.
The Cajón has shaped the peruvian folk scene since it’s origins in the XVI century.
