      Pro footballs second greatest team during that period was the Oakland Raiders. Unfortunately for them, the greatest team in pro football was the Pittsburgh Steelers. No matter how the old Raiders grumble nothing can change the numbers. There is no magic Eraser. They were good. Even great. The Steelers were greater. Four Super Bowls to one. Chuck Nolls gridiron madterpiece.

    Terrific video!! This is the rivalry I grew up on when I started following the NFL in the early '70s, I became a Raider fan because of this rivalry, Raiders - Steelers was as good as it got whether it was regular or postseason, They need to play again in the postseason soon to break a 3 all tie, Even today when they play each other it still looks and feels like the old days.

      I grew up on the 70s Raiders. I HATED the Steelers but the truth is that they were mirror images of each other. When Kenny Stabler passed away it was a bunch of old Steelers who pushed for him to the HOF. Mad Respect. If I ever end up in Pittsburgh I will find a sports bar roll in with my Stabler jersey and buy the house a round

    I’m a Steelers fan from 1977 to present so I didn’t understand the animosity (due to my age then) from 1976. By 1980 I appreciated the Raiders & their “brand” & started learning about Al Davis. To this day I believe that the NFL didn’t want the Raiders, the old brand & the pirate symbol to represent the NFL & America in the 2001 season Super Bowl in the midst of 9/11. It’s also suspicious that the year after the “tuck rule” games they were pitted against their former coach in the SB. Not saying the games are rigged, just saying a referee could never lose his job back then for a bad call against the Raiders. And still you guys always play us tough & win plenty.

    • @jaydenmartin7090
      @jaydenmartin7090 4 роки тому

      Huh they stopped the 2001 season due to the 9/11 not the fact they didn’t want the raiders to be in the super bowl, they didn’t want to face what happen to them earlier that year for the second time

    In that '72 playoff game on the immaculate reception play #20 of the Raiders sure was a buttmunch. First he raises his arms up prematurely to celebrate, then he shows zero speed, and then he misses the tackle. All you had to do was stay alert and play hard to the whistle for one last play, but no, you decided not to. Paying attention for an extra second was too much to ask.

    • @christophermcclave6337
      @christophermcclave6337 4 роки тому

      I think it was Neil Colzie. This is the problem with premature celebration. But it really would not have mattered if the Raiders had won. NO ONE was going to beat the Dolphins in the next game. The steelers were still 2 years away from greatness. The 1974 AFC Championship was their turning point. They beat the Raiders and then go on to win 4 SBs by the end of the decade. Looking at it from an objective viewpoint, the Raiders (as good as they were) were "built" for regular season success where you frequently played teams without strong pass defenses. But in the playoffs against dominant defenses like Pitt, Miami, KC, and Baltimore you saw what happened. They became "one-dimensional" with the zone defense taking away their strength. Look what happened in the 1973 AFC Championship. The Dolphins running game absolutely pulverized the Raider defense. In all fairness when your offense goes 3 and out and you hand the ball to Csonka and Kiick in 90 degree heat, you are a "dead man".
      As brilliant as Al Davis was at evaluating talent, his Achilles Heel was the deep passing game. Look what happened to Lamonica. He refused to change his style of play even knowing that the zone defense took away the long pass. In the NFL it is "adapt or die". I still believe in the 1974 playoffs if Miami had beaten the Raiders in Oakland, they would have beaten the Steelers the next week. It's all about match-ups and the Dolphins had one of the best offensive lines in the league (so did the Steelers for that matter). When you play the Steelers with one of the most dominant defenses in NFL history you have to play smart. No turnovers, no blown coverages, no stupid penalties. That was the Dolphins strength. Look how they completely shut down the Colts in the 1971 Championship. Allowed ZERO points. But getting back to the Steelers, you have to admire what they did. Chuck Noll was a very underrated coach. He knew football as well as anyone. Sadly, if the WFL does not come along and gut the Dolphins roster (lost Csonka, Kiick, Warfield, others) I am quite sure we would have seen some incredibly tough playoff games between Miami-Pitt. It wasn't meant to be.

    I was born in 1963. I was a Raider fan (in the NYC area) before I could walk. My whole family are Raider fans. I watched many of those games. I consider myself a good person, a religious person, a caring person, but I hate six things: the broncos, the chiefs, the chargers, the seahawks (they used to be in the AFC West), the patriots (tuck rule), but above all others, I hate the pittsburgh steelers, and especially the Steelers of the 70's. I hate their coach, their quarterback, their defense, their offensive line, and especially their rb and their mealy mouthed pussy wr. I am sorry, I can't help it. I will never recover from that bullshit play.
    BTW, great video, brother!

      Same here. Grew up in NJ and always hated the Jets. Especially after the 1968 AFL Champ game. DeRagotis (doing game with Gowdy) said he "saw cow pastures in better condition than the field at Shea Stadium". But you have to respect Namath's toughness and the pass to Maynard for the game-winning touchdown. If Lamonica does not throw the lateral what happens? Do the Raiders win? Maybe. But you can't make mental mistakes in championship games. Atkinson's blown chance for interception, Having to settle for 11 yd FG when you have 1st and goal on the Jets 5 yard line, missed FG by Blanda, etc. Those are all things that add up to put you behind the curve in the 4th qtr. But it is way too easy to scapegoat Lamonica for the loss. Let's recall the game:
      1. Jets had one of the best defenses in AFL.
      2. The Raider running game was very weak.
      3. Temps were dropping and winds swirled with gusts up to 40 mph.
      Despite all of this, Lamonica throws for over 400 yards in the game. Are you kidding me?
      It was a great game under some very challenging conditions.
      I simply think the Jets were meant to win so that the merger could happen. No way do I see the Raiders beating the Colts. It would have been a replay of SB II.

    The best rivalvry in sports. Oakland hated Pittsburgh and vice versa. Both teams were elite in the mid 1970s. The Steelers where extremely tough to beat at Three Rivers. No excuses Oakland came up just short in Three Rivers in the 1975 AFC Championship Game. But the Raiders in 1976 would not be denied and finally , finally after losing in 1968 to the NY Jets , 1969 to the KC Chiefs , 1970 to the Baltimore Colts and 1973 to the Miami Dolphins and to the Steelers in 1974 at The Coliseum ( a heartbreaker ) and 1975 at Three Rivers. Those were all AFC Championship and AFL Title Games. No more would they say " Always the Brides Maid never the Bride "

      Another component in Pittsburgh favor ,the Steel Curtain Defense was a complete dominate unit in all areas , the raiders weren't , they possessed a superb talent at individual positions along the defense ,Hendricks, Brown Tatum Sistrunk , but weren't a collective dominant unit ,which coincidentally was part and partial to why they acquired such a sordid conference championship game record until 76 ,when all of the stars aligned perfectly for them ,the controversial roughing the passer call against the Patriots defensive lineman Sugar bear Hamilton, granting the raiders a season saving first down during the final minutes of the divisional rd playoffs ,following a incompletion on 3 and 17 ,with the Patriots nursing a tenuous 21-17 lead , Pittsburgh Steelers entire backfield bring severely debilitated ,especially Franco and Bleier who were obviously missing from the contest . Remember in 1974 the Steelers had lost a regular season contest vs the raiders ,but ventured into Oakland in the conference championship game that season and vanquished the raiders , same case scenario was extremely probable to reoccur ,the Steelers 1976 opening day loss to those always relevant raiders after obtaining a 28- 14 late in the contest was based upon the Steelers becoming overly confident , psychologically lackadaisical, essentially becoming dismissive of those talent excellent raiders ,once that vice on Pittsburghs part transpired ,they couldn't harness the raiders momentum , resulting in a definitive season altering loss ,a transcript which led to Pittsburgh being a conference championship road team as opposed to a host team . Those Raiders were the superior team that captured the 1976 AFC conference championship 🏆,based upon who was available on the playing field for both teams, that respective Sunday obsoletely no objective question about that .

    Shows footage of them beating rookie qb Kruszcek in '76, then some from Gradkowski's one and only good game of his career, and another where Roethlisberger had the second worst game of his life with 4 picks (two returned for TD's) in which the raiders entire offense consisted of two field goals with their qb Andrew Walter only throwing for 55 yds all day. More lucky games about poor Steelers play rather than great Raider play and every one of those games were still close. Steelers get upset by the Raiders once or twice a decade, usually on the road, but this hasn't been a real rivalry since the 70s-early 80's. Just keeping it real. You'll never see the Steelers go 13 straight seasons not making the postseason after a super bowl win. I think it's now something like 15 out of the last 17 for the Raiders. Not good. But hey, if it makes you feel good showing an occasional win over a franchise with twice as many championships than your team...then have at it.

      Todd,
      Well the overall record between 2 teams is close (think Raiders won 17, lost 13). But even a Raider fan has to acknowledge the 1974-1975 defeats in playoffs to Pitt. Although in 1975 championship the players were almost literally skating on ice as they played. Probably one of the worst turf conditions for a playoff game I have ever seen.
      But that's why they play the game. The steeler defense was just downright nasty.
