I'm beginning to wonder just how numb I'm becoming to the whole concept of mass shootings. Maybe it's because the frequency of them has simply had the effect or maybe it's because I've become a heartless piece of garbage in my old age. But with the recent shooting in Florida, the gun control debate is back on the table and we're going to be hearing the same old arguments, again and again, arguing for solving the symptom of a problem rather than the problem itself.
With the large number of mass shootings in the United States, it is often easy to go for the low hanging fruit of gun control. After all, if the perpetrator didn't have access to guns, he couldn't have committed such a terrible crime, correct? However, on the other side, had someone else had a weapon and shot and killed him, the situation could have easily gone differently. I don't know which approach is correct, but the solution is not to simply ban all guns, nor is it to arm the populace as much as legally possible. However, both these arguments often ignore one simple fact that plenty of the world's most deadly terrorist acts like this were done without the use of any firearms.
Nice, France, 2016. An Islamic terrorist drives a box truck through a crowd of people killing over 80 people.
Kunming, China, 2014. Men with long knives stab 31 people to death.
Jos, Nigeria, 2010. Terrorists with machetes kill over 500, including toddlers and infants.
Bangkok, Thailand, 2015. A pipebomb explodes, killing 20 and injuring over 100 others.
Oklahoma City, 1995. A truck full of fuel and fertilizer explodes next to a federal building, killing 168.
Brooklyn, New York, 1990. A man with gasoline and matches burns down a club, killing 87.
New York City, 2001. 19 men armed with box cutters crash four passenger liners, killing nearly 3000.
Now none of this is meant to minimize the numerous mass shootings that have happened over the years, but rather to illustrate one simple point: if someone truly wants to inflict harm on others, they can and will find a way. Now it is highly unrealistic to go about banning box trucks, knives, and gasoline if all guns hypothetically go the way of the dodo, but if it did happen, I sincerely doubt it would solve anything. Which brings me to my final point, which is the fact that there is a simple fact that plenty of people have been ignoring for years now. In decades past, when gun control laws were most definitely more relaxed than our more modern sensibilities allow, a time when one could quite literally go into a hardware store and come out with a few sticks of dynamite, where were all the mass shootings? Seriously, where were they?
Framed this way, the question of gun control seems a case of good intentions seriously misdirected. There's something rotting in the heart of America that people quite frankly seem too scared to address. It becomes very easy to just blame Republicans and the NRA every time something like this happens rather than asking the question of just what on god's green earth is suddenly driving an abnormally increasing amount of people to commit acts of mass violence against their fellow man; and not just ask it, but genuinely search for the answer.
These mass shootings are not the problem, but one of its many symptoms. In biology, symptoms can often be worse than the actual problem, but sometimes, they can be a lot worse. A headache can easily be something from clogged sinuses to cancer, depending on the person. However, simply treating the headache does not suddenly make a tumor go away, nor will deleting all the guns suddenly make the wound in the soul of our nation and people heal. Solving a symptom starts with identifying the problem. Identifying the problem starts with asking the right questions and having the courage to actually want to know the answers.
I don't know what's causing so many people to feel the need to lash out at the world with such hatred in the hearts. I honestly don't. And honestly, when I see the evils that these people are able to so easily inflict upon others, part of me doesn't want to. But I honestly feel that it is necessary. Because the sooner we understand, the sooner we can solve this.
And if we don't, well we've already seen the results, and likely will continue to see them.
The Android Next Door the problem is the left makes these arguments to limit guns and it forces the right to defend the rights to own guns. The right is saying, let's talk about mental health, culture that glorifies guns and murders, video games that make killing so easy. But it gets lost in the "we must ban guns" and the counter argument to that non-sensical argument.
The problem is a failed school system, a failed healthcare system, and a failed discussion about it. Everyone and their mama is on pills, so they don't want to talk about that. We have some of the worst teachers in the western world, and as a teacher myself its hard to admit it, but no one wants to talk about that. Guns is an easy scape goat without people having to look at themselves.

This doesn't get said enough. The root of the problem isn't the guns; it's how America reacts to these shootings. In the old days, nobody would care what the shooter's so-called _reason_ was. All that matters is that what he did was _evil_ and our reaction should be the same no matter his motivation - he'd get a fair trial followed by a short stay on death row and a humiliating end on the electric chair or the end of a rope. The 24-hour media coverage these little psychopaths get is exactly what they're after, and exactly the opposite of the way we should react.
Ill take a stab at what is wrong with american culture that causes hatred like this. Discrimination, failed school system, failed healthcare, lack of community, dads being treated like criminals by courts in custodies, the lowest annual leave of any country, minimum wage which can't support a family, war mongering politics which end up with american lives lost(killing fathers who were military), big agro that poisons the people, fda that lets them get away with it, crime ridden communities, the list goes on and on
Regardless of whether or not Democrats are "wrong" about targeting gun control, which is proven effective for many other countries and it's not like all guns are going to be banned unlike those place, it needs to be said that the Republicans and the NRA are doing literally nothing. School shootings and gun violence is not new for the US. Every occasion these things happen, Democrats rile up and Reps/NRA says it's not guns then moves on. I don't get why gun advocates that claim to know there's a bigger problem are attacking only the Dems on this matter. Republicans tend to hold much more power, not to mention political push from the NRA, yet they do nothing for decades. Is that really the answer? To do nothing but remain silent or say there's a bigger problem but never attack it, as per the acceptance of doing just that. Any sensible discussion had is meaningless if we're not even holding people with power accountable for doing literally nothing.
I live in Fairfax County, Virginia. My high school has an armed police officer in our school. He is very friendly and just monitors the hallway. All doors are locked during the day, so the only way in without someone on the inside is through the front door, which requires buzzing in. It is common sense security that does not affect the learning environment.
Sean Whearty I live in Prince William and we have armed officers in the high school I went to. They were very nice, real friendly, they didn’t disrupt or interrupt the learning environment. They made it feel pretty safe there. We also have locked doors where the only entrance is the main.
Sean Whearty we have the same deal at my school. However it’s really not hard to get in through the locked side doors because if you just knock a student passing by will let u in thinking ur a student who just went out for lunch or something.
I live in Scranton, PA. My high school had two or three armed officers in it at all times and we’ve never had an issue. In fact the head officer at my school was also the wrestling coach. They fit right into the school environment and make said environment much, much safer.
I believe all kids should be going through security checkpoints equipped with metal detectors and x-rays. The most dangerous segment of society are teenage boys.
I've moved around a lot and almost every school I want to in 3 different states had security and locked doors why don't all schools have them?

You don't think that police regiments could simply adjust there regiments to meet the need without spending more money?
And another broader point: if you're so against a gross waste of money and manpower, you must be against the gross waste of money and man power pervasive throughout the government! At least when we have cops on campus, we can feel certain that our children won't endure such tragedies, and if they do, that its impact will be curtailed. Is it not worth every penny to protect our children?
Eric maybe there should be metal detectors in schools. Also more police or armed security within school parking lots and entrances. Also have doors that are lockable, and have multiple people who can communicate to the pr systems so easy communication can happen.

Dude I don't care if it's a waste of anything. The state cannot say "oh send your kids here" and then refuse to protect them. I will gladly pony up tax money for this. I don't care if they sit for years eating donuts without one single incident. If there is a gun man walking in the parking lot I don't care if he's crazy. Empirically, gun control is a massive success. Countries around the world do not have the same gun problem that we have because they have stricter gun laws than we have.
Gun control in Chicago is also a major success. The guns that the police seize in Chicago weren't illegally obtained in Chicago. Instead, the guns are being purchased from neighboring cities with lax gun control. If Chicago gun control were a failure, then criminals wouldn't have to leave the city to get their hands on a gun.
Studies show that more guns on the street=more mass shootings, and fewer guns on the street=fewer mass shootings. What is the variable that isn't being controlled for which is giving the illusion that mass shootings are not tied to gun eligibility requirements? Mass shootings appear to be directly attributable to gun eligibility requirements.
My sincerest of prayers go out to anyone who has had to suffer as a result of this shooting or any others. Nobody should have to suffer that much as a result of one man’s cruelty.

Eliminate the insanity that you cant legally and lawfully possess firearms you eliminate the thought that these shooter's are safe because its gun free.
So that means that different policy could be considered. Just because a law doesn't work doesn't mean that no laws can work.

The FBI did look into him but said they couldn’t confirm he was the one who wrote the comment on the UA-cam video about shooting a school. Background checks would have showed the FBI looked into him if they actually filed a report which they didn’t.
Yes the FBI did drop the ball but don't you think if someone is banned from having a backpack on school grounds that should show up in a background check somehow? I mean the only reason to ban him from having a backpack is if you think he is gonna bring a weapon to school. He was clearly mentally unstable yet there was no paperwork saying he was for the background check to find. Multiple failures here imo.

If they didn’t tell the police then how is a background check going to show only what the school declared. Stuff from school doesn’t show up on background check unless it was reported to authorities

One last thing I really hope Ben runs for presidency or something that he could have a huge influence in our political system he is a leader that isn’t afraid to say the truth and can explain why things are and what needs to be done
I've always thought it was nonsense to not have armed security at a school. My high school had an active police officer everyday, and this was a high school with less than 500 students out in the middle of nowhere... What can we do to address these "no-gun-zones", because they obviously do not work...
This school had a guard but there were thousands of kids in multiple buildings. The guy just went in another way. Our government is not serious about this......one guard are you kidding me??

Well, when I posted my initial comment, I didn't have all of the facts. There was one school resource deputy that was assigned to the school, but reports now are starting to state that the deputy may not have been on campus at the time of the shooting. The other security guard was the football coach, who did not carry a firearm. He tragically died protecting some students.

I'd say that I didn't have all the facts when I made my comment, but the underlying message of gun-free-zones and lack of proper security are matters that needs to be addressed.

I found something stating that a deputy was present at the school, but was off-duty and not carrying his firearm. His son attends the school and the deputy was volunteering with the varsity baseball team. I'm wondering if this was where you got the info that there were two officers on sight. One deputy that was assigned to the school, but was not present and the off-duty deputy who was a volunteer for the baseball team.
The problem is, America is a "lots-of-gun-zone". A no gun zone in the middle of a sea of guns is vulnerable. But mass shootings don't just happen at schools. They happen everywhere. We need to deal with the problem of guns.

My church has multiple armed security person for all 3 services. We lock our doors in the children's area after service begins. I love my church for multiple reasons and I am so thankful for the safety protocols in place.

Just to be clear I am a high schooler and the closest high school to my high school is Stoneman Douglas, one of my teachers taught there for 12 years, then the next day (post the shooting) my teacher was crying and I don’t blame her the shooting was tragic but, a classmate was saying “it was idiotically strategic of him to pull the fire alarm to get students out, in a bad way of course I’m not honoring him”. But my sensitive teacher forced him to shut up by saying “shut up” repeatedly. My point is we the people need to stop being sensitive about this crap.

Every school I went to from 1994 to 2009 had an armed security guard or a county sherrif deputy? Why hasn't this been implemented everywhere across the US?

The media has been warned by Psychologist about what type of coverage they give to these type of mass killings. But the media basically talks about the death count and comparing it to other death counts. In a mentally unstable person that might be contemplating killing themselves or others this could give them motivation to out do the others that ha committed such acts. Something to note however are countries that have stricter gun laws than what the Democrats are pushing for. It's not like they're not connected to world news, nor social media in general. Yet these countries don't have the same copy cats doing these acts. Every country has its problems, some universal (such as the frequency of mental disability), but things like almost weekly school shootings are not one of them except for the US. Some (i.e. not all) of those countries experience terror attacks, but the US has its own share of those same occurrences in recent history. That's not even including said frequent school shootings, which end up putting a lot of ISIS attacks to shame.
foomp Most of the places that have very strict gun control also tend to be places with some of the most horrible human rights records. I like the Swiss perspective, all able bodied men and most women serve in the military and every citizen is required to keep firearms (both military and personal) in ready condition. They have laws that are close to the United States and even go further with banning imagrints from certain countries to acquire firearms. Btw when was the last horrible school shooting in Switzerland?

I go to a high school with 3000 total kids. There are 3 armed police that are on campus 24/7. Because of this, the school is always safe! No fights, threats, shootings ect... It’s great! I’m really thankful to be going to a school like this.

I am enrolled in a grossly overcrowded and under funded high school where threats of homicide/suicide are so common place that nobody, not even the local cops (to an extent), take it seriously anymore.

Based on my personal dealings with parents these days, there's a rather alarmingly high number of unqualified parents out there. Some of them probably don't even remember they have a kid... as per how often parents "forget" to pick up their kids.

I believe all this starts from bad parenting or not even having parents at all. What I mean by that is mothers and fathers neglecting their children. And let's not lie to ourselves If somebody gets cornered beat up so frequently not getting recognized by others being a outcast people do crazy things. Everybody needs a good role model to look up to in order to become a good person and to help others. If their parents won't do that who will.
Bad parenting, to the extent it is responsible, will always exist. Too many guns and too free a gun culture enables bad parenting to turn into mass shooting exponentially more in the US than in any other civilized country.

Psychopathy is particularly resistant to treatment. Most have no insight to seek treatment, and they don't show classic signs of psychosis that can be seen in some folks with schizophrenia. Matter of fact, most of those with psychopathy are considered functional. It is also not a defensible legal position, so those who are charged with a crime cannot plead mentally ill. Most will not offend because they don't want to be incarcerated, thus psychopaths are calculating and very in control of their actions. Perpetrating or contemplating violence should be the focus. A real investigation would have revealed that this perpetrator needed to be locked up for threatening to harm people. That would have made it illegal for him to be in possession.
I've always believed that keeping the identity of someone who does something like this private WILL reduce copy cats...

All of the schools I went to in DC except one had metal detectors and security guards. I think that should be a standard everywhere to help keep schools safe. I used to joke that my high school had airport security but looking back, I'm glad it was there.

earlier this school year we had a guy who we knew was depressed and had a tendency to talk about guns and harming others and himself, one day he shows up to school with multiple guns, and my friends reported him. my school district has never had a murder at school and I think this is because every school has a Student Resource Officer who doubles as armed security. We've had a few suicides and only 1 incident with pot-laced brownies where a student had an allergic reaction and almost died; two things that the armed officer could never prevent unless he saw it.
One advantage a shooter has over an SRO is the SRO is in uniform and the shooter is in plain clothes. If the shooter takes out the officer, then what?

Schools need strong security measures. Train and arm teachers to protect and coordinate together against an active shooter. Have at least one armed guard in the building. The more schools look like soft targets the greater the chance of an attack. Most of the damage a shooter will do is with in the first 5min, so forget help from the cops. The school staff needs to be ready to deal with this sort of thing, period.
I don't know if you've ever met some of these school teachers, but some tend to barely be qualified to be around kids, so I'm not sure how effective it'd be to also require them to know how to use a gun responsibly, much less carry one. Hell, if a fight broke out in a class, I'd imagine we'll hear of many instances these trained teachers shot their students to stop their fighting lol.
You sir, are absolutely correct. After 9/11 occurred, pilots who were willing to be armed. We able to get a permit to carry a firearm on the plane that they were piloting. Of course, the pilots electing to be armed, had to go through a safety and training course. And then get subsequently certified (licensed per se). Schools should do the exact same thing the airlines industry does. No one is forced to be armed. Only the employees who choice to. I bet an active shooter wouldn't consider a school as a soft target, knowing that teachers/staff are armed. My high school growing up had about 3,000 students and about 10 armed school officers with bullet proof vests at the entrance of the school with security cameras for outside and inside. Their presence never bothered anyone and actually made us feel safe because there were some rough kids in that school. We never had a school shooting. When I taught elementary school in DC I had to pass through a metal detector as soon as I entered the school everyday. When I visited a high school in dc for the day, I had to first pass through a metal detector and then have my photo taken and printed out on a badge with my name on it. Then armed officers searched my bags. Only then could I pass through a second set of doors to actually enter the school.

I have a family member who is schizophrenic. He’s never been adjudicated as mentally defective. He is paranoid and walks around with a gun because he thinks someone is going to kill him. His Dad is a judge and former commonwealths attorney and the police know all about him. He’s been in mental facilities, but never involuntarily committed. He does not need a gun. But he has one and we are scared of him. No one can do anything about it. This is an older non- violent man, not a School shooter, to be clear. But what happens when he decides, because of his illness, that my brother is “out to get him?”

People at my high school used to think I was going to shoot up the school because 'person A' said I looked like a school shooter. Kids at schools are viscious and they joke about shit like this or anyone they think is beneath them. (Itxs definitley not always a hostile enviornment this just my view based off of mybexpedience at school). There have been cases of coaches ignoring bully reports because they needed this player on the team. It's disgusting, but suddenly when a shooter appears theres no thought about some of the kids in these schools being responsible for a shooting to happen. Nobody really cares about how choices you make or things you say affect the enviornment around you.

As a Responsible gun owner I agree totally with Ben. We need to do more on stopping people that are known to have violent tendencies. I had a neighbor threaten me outside my house with a shot gun, who admitted it to the police, with my audio recording and other neighbors testimonial of the incident that was only put on 18 month probation. The man had a juvenile record of violence but had since turned 18 and this was his first offence as an "adult". he still owns the gun he had very little done to him and I still worry is there a day he snaps and comes for me or my family. Even my high school almost had a shooting, but thankfully the kid got caught beforehand! He was a year older than me and had a grudge against the students from his year for bullying him. He had a hit list and when one of the kids from his grade got killed by a drunk driver he wrote on his Facebook page that he was happy.

In Virginia every school has a armed police officer on duty on the campus. The doors lock after the first bell in the morning. In order for anyone to enter the building you have to be buzzed in. They also have cameras to see who’s is trying to come in. Why are not all schools around the country like this??
I think we should first look to state gun laws before going Federal... They have pretty quick and relaxed background checks. Not that it would have stopped this shooting, maybe look to change state law before a huge Federal law.

Often times at my high school there is a police officer there and it's usually always the same officer who will stand around the campus during school hours. I can't say I feel overwhelmingly safer with him there but I do appreciate knowing that he is. (In a So-California highschool)

Absolutely we need to talk about solutions, but when we do let's consider:
1. Someone intent on committing mass murder will not be dissuaded by having to break a gun law;
2. Making something illegal does not make it go away;
3. Outlawing AR-15s (or any gun) will only cause law abiding gun owners to give them up;
4. The person with the superior fire power usually kills the other;
5. It takes only one bullet to kill someone, an AR15 semi-automatic rifle can fire 45-50 round per minute, and the average “mass shooting” police response time is about 3.5 minutes;
6. The one absolutely certain way to stop a shooter from shooting many more people is to shoot them, many times.
1. Gun law will dissuade someone from selling a gun to a person intent on committing mass murder, thus making it harder for that person to get a gun.
2. If thats a reason to not make something illegal, then why should anything be illegal?

The problem isn’t the guns, they’ve been there forever and the shootings have not been. The problem is the culture.
Schools are prime soft targets and have been known as such for quite a while. There is an option to run school staff through backgrounds, send them through training with local L.E., arm them, maintain training requirements like L.E. and not only become a huge deterrent, but be able to respond to active shooters and minimize injury/death. However, all too often, these situations are used to forward the agenda of destroying the 2nd Amend. and leaving more victims. "Gun free zones" are a misnomer due to the fact that laws/regulations are ignored by those that commit crimes. There are too many examples of states or cities that have strict gun laws that demonstrate failure to protect from or stop violent crime.

That is not what I was saying at all. Talking about firearms training, room entrance/clearing, target engagement, etc...and maintaining regular training requirements. There is no reason why this cannot be done if there is an actual concern for active shooter response. Utilize the resources and available bodies on the scene instead of relying on primary response from L.E. and increasing injury/death during the waiting period. A lot can happen in a 3-5 min. or longer response time.
Seriously think about your proposal. It would be ideal if that were possible but soooo many teachers are against guns outright. Room clearing training to teach a class is laughable. Put down the Oxy and start paying attention to your surroundings.

Absolute access control could have implemented to prevent this and other tragic events. The cost of these security measures are miniscule compared to the loss of One life. Stop seeking gun control and fix the security issues NOW. The critical issue here is restricted access and security screening before access is granted.

We had a shooting threat in our highschool by an ex-student who named out teachers (They never released the names but we made some educated guesses).
In about an hour we had heavily armed police officers all over our school complete with a couple snipers on our roof.
They ended up catching the guy a short distance from his house armed with a couple pistols and a sawed-off shotgun in the trunk. He would have never made it inside because the cops had bigger guns. They were ready to meet his aggression with a powerful equalizer, a gun. Our school is obviously a "gun free zone" but to my surprise, I realized that criminals don't follow the rules. I guess some people forget that.

Didn't the 1965 Civil Rights Act prohibit forcing a person into rehabilitation even if he/she is suspected of being mentally ill. I think, from the perspective of a teacher, that parents may insist their child be in a regular class if they choose, no matter how serious the mental or physical problem.

Honestly one way to solve this issue is to do a Nation Wide Program to employ Military Veterans (Unarmed) as Security at Schools. As long as they pass PTSD and mental health evaluations it would be a win, win. Employ Veterans with a honest/noble steady job and safeguard our schools.

Ridge _ if the future killer doesn't see the name or picture plastered everywhere it shows that people won't care or remember him. It's not about him being able to find the name. He wants everyone to know who he was, not just other psychos.
It's not so much the fact that we name the shooter, but that we go through their whole life history making excuses like "he was a troubled young man" or "he had a hard life." The shooter is never the villain of the story, just another poor, hopeless victim. Mass shooters do these things for attention. If their actions got the social opprobrium that they deserved (especially from their own families), maybe they wouldn't be so common. If (God forbid) a son of mine did this, I would never allow anyone to speak his name in my presence ever again.

Troy Bakeman he was part of a terrorist organization that because they were affiliated with white nationalist, our current president administration took them of off a watch list which is horrible. Hate is hate and breeds forms of violence. Much of Ben Shapiro's ideas and many others on line talk about current events to poor less educated people and make certain groups of people like they are losing their rights. So these white nationalist groups takes actions that leads to things like this. It happens on the other side too but because many black Americans were oppressed by the government and police for so long they don't "act out" to these extents as though other groups of people. Ben being Jewish throws me off because his talks sounds similar to the people that oppressed the jews during ww2. He needs to clean up his act. Smh
