So...let me get this straight - I set the IC-705 up using the Access Point option if I plan to use my laptop to control the IC-705 while I'm away from my home and using my cell phones Internet hotspot. Right?

At home you’ll connect using the Station option and when you’re away from home, you’ll use the Access point option. 3fs.net.au/ic-705/station-or-access-point-which-wifi-to-use-on-the-ic-705/

Depends on where the radio is - if the radio is at home and you want to connect to it remotely, use Station to connect to the home network. If you don't have access to the internet (like if you are in the field and away from cell phone coverage) but still want to control the radio without wires using a different device, then access point. Access point gives devices access, but no internet. Station uses the internet.
Away from home, with the IC-705 with you, you can EITHER tether the radio to the cell phone's hotspot via wifi, and the phone hotspot will serve as the "hub" and internet connection, and you would use Station mode to connect to your device through the same wifi network created by the phone to access and control the radio. You can eliminate the phone, and access the radio directly via wifi, without the internet, by using "Access Point."
Note also that all interaction remotely requires Icom's Remote Utility, which is part of the RS-BA1-V2 software package (requires payment/purchase).

The 9700 wasn't nearly the first ICOM to get an ip address.... my ICOM 7800 has that feature and that debuted in 2003.

The outer-space elevator music that runs continuously in the background is very irritating.
