  • Despite local objections and planning permission having previously been refused, the landowner won his case on appeal and was granted permission to erect 8 holiday chalets. This video shows the destruction to the landscape, all in the name of 8 chalets.

Thank you for posting I loved this spot, saw deer, otters, porpoise, seals. Few went just a magical place. The ridiculous thing is that farmer grabbing the money died a few weeks ago leaving this mess. Some legacy.

My Dad had one of the huts along there, and helped with the fight against MacTaggart. I am absolutely heartbroken to see such a beautiful place destroyed so much.

my dad had a hut down here. I spent most of my childhood down here and have some great memories of being here and the people we met. It's so very sad that it's turned out this way.

My great grandparents built one of the huts - Pax. It was a beautiful, simple and peaceful place. I spent many a summer there and it was so dear to me.
I took my son and wife there to see where I had spent such happy times in my childhood.
When I got to the old lane and saw a barrier up I was surprised. I went to the farm and asked the young lad if we could gain access as my child was too small to walk any distance. "Nup." was his monosyllabic reply. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree as far as that lot are concerned.
So we walked down the road (having parked at the Forestry place a fair distance up) carrying our child when his legs got tired.
I knew that the huts had been removed. For some reason though I thought they would have made the new huts with a modicum of respect for the beautiful little bay.
What I saw broke my heart. They'd turned that stunning spot into a gravel covered industrial site. Where there had been trees, ferns, a natural spring, and character, there was now exposed cliff and bedrock.
The landlords up at the farm had always had a reputation for being top tier bottom holes but I never thought that even they would stoop so low.
I had this idea in my head that my son would spend holidays there having adventures like I did when I was a child but I don't think I could stomach return to the place that has been so badly defiled by those scumbags.

I was one of the Rascarrel hutters and am more than a little shocked that this was allowed to happen the way it has done. This is an SSSI site (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and supposedly protected! we would never have been allowed to do anything that would compromise the site how could they let this happen?

As previous, the Planners gave permission for the barrier to be placed in its current position. On raising this with them they just indicated that it was private land, no previous permission had been given by the landowner and it was just an informal agreement that allowed parking. It is also interesting to note that the land owners rep. at the Planning Appeal used the provision of the car park as a positive reason for planning approval, citing the use by locals and visitors as being important! "Magnaminity" is not a word understood by the land owner.

It still pains me to see this, haven't been to Rascarrel for a year. We used to go every month. Planners seem to strict with some cases and don't seem to care at all in other circumstances. Just makes you wonder about brown paper bags full of cash.

We walked past these lodges and marvelled at their position. However, I was shocked to see that the car park is no longer accessible to the public. I was also saddened to find the body of a sparrow below the transparent panels around the balcony of one of the lodges - presumably killed through flying into the panel.

Surely, Michael Thwaite, the local planners should come in to insist on the car park being reinstated. And for the owners, surely some magnanimity is needed. We will certainly not be booking.

Contd. now - having seen this UA-cam posting, I am horrified to read about the destruction of this beautiful spot. Is there any hope that the owners might reconsider opening up the car park? We were considering booking a lodge in the future but on reading the background to this development, we have changed our minds.

Steve Birkin The planning permission included the provision of 16 public car parking spaces. The access barrier was to have been at the bridge over the burn. The landowner reneged on the car park and, with the permission of the Planners, placed the barrier near to the public road. It is believed this was done because of the local objections to the development.

Absolutely ridiculous that the farmer got his way. Says pedestrian access for the circular route round cliffs and loch but if you go anywhere near there they try and say ots private property. No access to the car park now either
