I spend most of my time reporting to clients non compliant fire alarm and emergency lighting systems and you're right, it is life safety so you're right to advise the agent of the dog shit install! 🔥🔥🔥
Paul was spot on about working in London. I don't know how people put up with it day in day out. You see some of the most horrendous unsafe botch jobs, and meanwhile someone is putting a ticket on your van!
By far the worst bodges I've ever seen have been in London. Air con power supplies, shop fitters adding in odd circuits, maintenance firms fitting metal fittings to circuits with no earth. Its a complete shit hole/shit show from start to finish...
Posted on Christmas Eve here in New Zealand. @Thomas Nagy, all of your staff and families, please have a happy and safe festive season, thanks for all the videos from the year that is about to end. Top marks all round folks, it's been a hard year!
Fire alarm installer could have been waiting for the mains supply to be installed? I've had to do it with intruder alarms, CCTV etc, (not done it with fire personally) where the lack of a fused spur or supply is holding the job up. It gets put on a plug top and the customer chases up the spark to get it finished off. Often go back to jobs months later to find them still plugged in. Two sides to every story I guess...
The problem is that you could be accused of having caused the mark (or damage, etc) yourself and are taking a photo just to claim that it wasn't you that did it. The only sure way is to go around the property taking pics with the owner/responsible person before you even start any work, but often that's just not possible.
Common sense is not common. True, in portuguese we say "bom senso" instead which literally translates to "good sense" it's not common, but it is better.
This video has helpe me out loads taking pictures definitely beneficial. Don't be embarrassed tell the estate agent show them pictures we have to prove our price why we charge for a proper job. Your mate is class bring him on more
I must say speaking as someone who is on a Tenants and Residents Association and a Tenants Union I always recommend to tenants to record visually every single bit of the house before you even put the carpet down. Because Landlords can also be a hole's. However I also feel more confident that when trades people come into tenants properties they photograph their work as they are showing their pride in their work and willing to take steps to show their confident knowing they have done it professionally! However to be honest and I can see all trades people wearing body cams when working in the future with all this claim and blame culture. If I were a tradesperson right now I would wear one all the time to cover my arse.
Went to a leasehold property on a site the other day, owner called me in to check buzzing noises after the site electrician had been in. He'd caulked all around the switches and sockets, the buzzing was arching in the switch where the cables weren't even done up in the terminals. Exposed inner insulation outside of fittings etc etc - this place has only just been tested apparently yet two sockets so far have blown up also due to loose wiring. Everyone should be taking photos and documenting the state of the property when they move in and second opinions and inspections are a tenant/landlords right. Just because it's all included doesn't mean they have your best interests at heart.
Worth sending your move in photos to the manager and getting an ack if you can, or just annotate them on to the incoming report. I've been through a "discussion" recently where damage that was barely visible in their photos when i moved in was something I was expected to pay for when I moved out. Luckily I had better photos and had attached them to the report when I moved in, clearly showing every bit of damage. Some of it was luck... "and out this window you can see the stump of the tree that allegedly I removed"
The best days of private rental have gone now. It's over for both landlords and tenants, but moreso for landlords. Things have turned into a them and us battleground, and there's no winners. Time to emigrate.
DO NOT UNPLUG THE FIRE ALARM. Turn the receptacle switch off instead. Absolutely a good idea for contractors to take photos/video of job sites when leaving. The price of external data storage is ridiculously small these days (recommended to keep data here instead of cluttering your computer's internal storage), especially in comparison to repair claims against you that are not your fault (and it also protects your reputation). Photos can be separated into folders named by the individual invoice number or client account number or whatnot for easy tracking. CYA. This goes for renters, too! Take pictures/video of everything when you move in. Take pictures/video of everything when you leave. Assume, and prepare for, the worst; and if things turn out well, you only suffered a minor inconvenience. (And if things go arse-over-teakettle, your arse is protected!)
Interesting. The usa doesnt have lock out bolts where I live. There are master wafers used so a given cylinder has two bittings for a master key and tenant's key but rarely two locks with only one operable by the tenant’s key. From a decoding standpoint, that makes it easy to make master keys if you have one set of tenant keys but that is how it is done.
Funny story on the leaving locks as you found them. In my first uni house, the estate agent was showing people around while we were still living there and all in the house. She left and locked us in with the deadbolt that we hadn't even even been given a key to 😂😂 Had to call and wait until they came back to free us from our temporary prison 😂
EDA zerio plus fire panel. Run a mile then run another 40 mate. Its not cheap kit standard smoke costs about 100 quid 😅 and if its not had its signal strengths surveyed correctly itll never work. No excuse for that supply though 😅
Good idea to take pictures as evidence. However, I put that days newspaper in shot because a pictures date/time stamp can be queried, but a current newspaper shows the pictures could not have been taken before it was published.
Way back in the day long before digital photography the foreman had a film camera in the office, one that could time stamp. If we found damage on the network, usually caused by a contractor, (I used to work for LEB) we'd give him a call and he'd pop out and photograph it in case we needed evidence if it ended up in court. It was very common for the judge to demand to see the negatives to make sure the print hadn't been altered.
Can you tell me how best to use 1-pole circuit breakers or 1p+n or in what situations one is used and when the other is used you can also make a video on this topic but in accordance with the regulations
If you need to take pictures that often, maybe it's worth investing in something like a theta 360 camera. Set it up in the middle of a room and remotely trigger it. Individual pictures don't always give you context of how they connect up to the other photos.
When my Brother and his family moved out of their previous flat they estate agent tried to hold back the deposit because the carpets were not in a good state, the error with that was I had a week prior (after they had moved out) done a full vacuum and carpet clean throughout with the only spot being missed being where the fish take still was, plus the carpets were a million times better than the state of them when they moved in! Took a letter from my father (which they supposedly didn't read as it wasn't from the tenant) to get tehir cash back. Would have been fun if it ended up in court as when it comes to cleaning, my Dad's not only got a degree in it but has had to be an expert witness in court regarding cleaning when he worked for the council!
Don't worry about snitching. I work in a bio med building that my company put in a bit for. Another company under bit us by a million dollars. Now, the company is paying my company to fix everything the other company messed up or did wrong. The first article of my electric code defines that all codes are to protect life and property. So, if making a building safe means snitching on another company, we will do so. Plus, it shows our integrity and strive for quality.
maybe the fire panel has a long lasting lithium backup battery, vs old agm/sealed of 1/20th? possibly allowed with the plug marked as such. not in uk so who knows
Yeah, every fire alarm I know comes with battery backup and it beeps annoyingly if it has no power, so I don't know what the issue is. How can a power plug, which even has built in fuse can be unsafe? I'm also not from the UK.
Thomas Richter because it’s plugged into a socket it’s should be wired directly in to a panel or if they wanted to go to a socket come off it with a fused spur. Also I wonder how it passed if at all
I'm not a professional on the UK, but what exactly is the problem with the power plug for the fire alarm system? I mean, I don't understand why it would be a problem unless there is a strict rule about it.
A fire alarm as far as I know always comes with a battery backup and a no power alert. Even if someone were to unplug it from the socket it would, A still work fine and B start beeping about no power.
Thomas Richter yes but it would need to be reset to stop it beeping / flashing. Now on some panels it’s easy as turn key and press a button and turn back. On some you need a engineer code so the person installed it will have to come out and charge an hour labour + call out for a 10 sec job. Iam sure just like alarms it’s should have a uninterruptible power supply connection and have a power isolator / keyed service point If they just fitted a spur off that socket it would of been acceptable
It does seem a bit like telling tales and sour grapes because you didn't get the job. But you can guarantee, if something were to happen, and you knew about it, and didn't report it, you would be in the firing line. Depends on the nature of the building. Commercial premises that require certain safety certificates may get inspected but a dwelling like this it’s unlikely.
It's the same in the car job Tom , I take loads of pictures of anything I see either damaged , bits missing , marked or clearly not right , to cover my arse as you say , photos with date stamp , and especially in our job mileage differences don't lie 👍
On the flip side, i do this all the time when i leave a rental property. Travelling all over the world on short term lets, many a time i've had a letting agent pull some sh*t and try to keep the deposit.
Can vouch for the importance of taking photos, I once rented out a house to a relative and right in the lease it stated NO holes could be drilled in the plaster walls. So of course the guy did that. When he was getting ready to move out he claimed all those holes were there to start with and I had no way to prove otherwise.
Why not fit A dual back box for the fire alarm, 1 single socket for any appliance on the left & 1unswitched fused spur on the right for the fire alarm.
Maybe a temp mains connection until a spark connects to a supply? in which case I’m surprised they haven’t asked you yet. Not all fire alarm engineers are qualified sparks which is why it wasn’t done correctly? It might also not be the main fire panel but a wireless Repeater.
not sure what the minimum install standards in effect back in old country, but down here, it'd be flagged the next time council does the building warrant...
To right about taking photos. I always do when doing eicr as people mess about with the installation before you get back to do the repairs .. also you can show the client photo evidence as well as the test report .👍👍
Apart from the fire alarm panel not being hard wired into a spur what was sooo drastically wrong with the rest of the system? You said it's crap.... £100 would cover the metal clad spur to be fitted.
its crap because its of it , if they did such a cowboy move what else they did , also you say that the fix is cheap but you cant say that since the its been fitted in the last 12 and does not meet the regs
We always take photos an send them off, before an after photos prove you’ve done what you’ve said an then they can see it’s been done an covers yourself
If they had to run a loop round all the smoke heads why couldn't they run a feed back to the landlords board, it can be too far away from the intake can it?
It’s a wireless system , the sensors are battery powered so only the panel needs power and any booster/relay points fitted. Like it’s not hard to fit a spur in a pinch like this then going with a plug. Like while testing or having someone coming out to sort it at a later date would be okay but this info should be passed over
Oh hell yes, Photograph everything. I come at it as a renter, but I've got about an hour of video footage from 'move in day' of every place I've ever rented. This is just common sense. RECORD EVERYTHING!
I still think that you can’t talk to other sparks about things your not to sure about! To many people up there ars and think you should know everything before you work on your own
I've seen a fire alarm on a plug top plugged into a multi way extension! I sh!t you not! And the cleaner had their hoover plugged into the same extension 😳😂
When they quoted they probably didn't allow to do the mains and are waiting for the building owner to get the electrician in to do the mains , I would be interested to see if this is covered in there quote and there commisioning paperwork maybe worth checking all the facts first
if they didn't quote to do the mains then they shouldn't have powered up the fire alarm panel. If anything happens the insurance won't cover the costs because the work isn't certified.
I wonder why?? You will be under cut in price because of the invasion of artisans from other parts of the world that can live on a tenner, as to you as a businessman investing in your time and business. (You must report it because we don't want another Grenfell problem....) (Selling your time is a difficult business to be in) Please have Paul in your van more often, He tells as it is.... I love it.
I would love to work with you as a spark for 3 months, just to learn real fast and feel like I know it all. Then at the end of the 3 months I'll probably have learned enough to realize I don't know shit about being a spark and I've got years ahead of me before I get decent. But I've already jumped ship so I'll just get the big *PHEW* rush that'll last me a good 20 minutes, totally worth it! (Yes, legal highs are harder to come by)
Omg fire alarm on a plug top 🤣🤦♂️ never seen that before ! It’s just so unprofessional just to stick it on a plug considering how important it is . I’ve had to snitch today and feel bad but then like u say ur just doing your job . (Just shown it to my dad who’s been a sparky for 40 yrs & he just laughed 🤣🤭 )
Yer Common sense.. IF only it was Commmon.. hahha yer right.. we aint that lucky. Thanks for the tips Tom, as some one who only started out on his own march of this year (sucky timing i know) your tips over all this time have been great.
Always take date stamped pictures before and after any work done. In a client property. Saves a world of pain Later on.
I wear a body cam now when ever I talk to anyone in a professional setting. Sad part of today's world
Did you get paid for the work done to date on the bar?
Great reaction to a reversing camera “oh you slag”
I spend most of my time reporting to clients non compliant fire alarm and emergency lighting systems and you're right, it is life safety so you're right to advise the agent of the dog shit install! 🔥🔥🔥

Nom Nom has changed a bit at the end of the video 🤣🤣
🤣👏👍
Common sense is so rare it should be classified as a superpower
Congrats! You've won the internet today! :-D
So true world wide I'm afraid & respect
I am not sure it's anything to do with common sense, I think people are just stupid these days.
The expression I was taught is "If common sense was truly common then more people would have it"

Seeing as he’s the electrician who looks after the site and has not been asked to fit a dedicated supply, I think he’s safe in his opinion
@@sgfelectrical734 he might not be just happens to be doing those odd jobs the owner has already proved that they get multiple quotes
Someone’s got a sense of humour fitting a EDA system, never seen one fault free !!
And if there is a mark on the carpet when you start, photo it with the date!
The problem is that you could be accused of having caused the mark (or damage, etc) yourself and are taking a photo just to claim that it wasn't you that did it. The only sure way is to go around the property taking pics with the owner/responsible person before you even start any work, but often that's just not possible.
Love the bits at the end with Paul meenan. That was a surprise.
More Tom and Paul in the van please! What happens when you put him and Nom in the same room? LOL
Common sense is not common.

Yo you need to get your mate on your channel more often.
This video has helpe me out loads taking pictures definitely beneficial. Don't be embarrassed tell the estate agent show them pictures we have to prove our price why we charge for a proper job. Your mate is class bring him on more
In 30 years, I've never seen a Fire Alarm fed by a plug top😮🤣

You have every right to report back to the agent with your findings,so don't feel guilty 👍

11:42 - And there ya go. I've been saying that for years. Along with "Work Smarter, Not Harder."
I've never seen a fire panel on plug before. But I have seen a few intruder alarms on a plug mostly installed by one very large company.
More Paul in the van. Love it. 👍👍👍
Paul swearing cracks me up😂

What regulation is the fire alarm plug top coded as...just curious??
looks like they used a standard 1 quid BS1363 plug, to me at least.
EDA zerio plus fire panel. Run a mile then run another 40 mate. Its not cheap kit standard smoke costs about 100 quid 😅 and if its not had its signal strengths surveyed correctly itll never work. No excuse for that supply though 😅

I do a full video walkthrough on any place or vehicle (including roof & undercarriage) I have any sort of responsibility for.
@ Thomas Nagy,
Is that guy your new apprentice? lol
Nice choice of the scoot! I use a kick scooter with 14 inch wheels.
Great upload as always mate.
More Paul more Paul !
Totally agree lol we need some van drive chats like the moto vlogs
Don't worry about snitching. I work in a bio med building that my company put in a bit for. Another company under bit us by a million dollars. From your point of view and experience is the electrical trade good for lgbqt people?
Hey Thomas, hope you are well.
How can I get in contact with you in regards to hiring you as a electrician to rewire my 2 bedroom house?
Regards
Oz
Hey there - drop the details to info@thomasnagy.co.uk and the office will pick it up! 👍
More of Paul please ! What a legend
It does seem a bit like telling tales and sour grapes because you didn't get the job.
But you can guarantee, if something were to happen, and you knew about it, and didn't report it, you would be in the firing line. Let's face it, all this health and safety bollocks serves one propose, and that's to nail some poor bastard that made a mistake.
I always tell them stuff via email or text, then it's up to them what they do, you have proof of notifying them, and you have done your bit.
What he said
Anyone ever shat in a water tank whilst working in attics ?
😂
i pissed in it 3 months ago , never shat there though thats too nasty
What ladder was that Tom? I recall you mentioning in a video months ago about 5 rung ladders. Did younever find one?
Working in IT, I can tell you, people will lie, point blank to your face. It's actually funny when you tell them when they are lying, I don't do it on a regular basis, but it has come down to log files where they have drawn themselves into corners!
Same here, I work in IT also and find the same, people blame everything/one to negate the real cause of the issue...
More more lol 😆 is there more videos of you and Paul 👍🏼
Hi tom I went on ITS tools to place order and put in ITSTOM and didn’t work are you not with ITS now
I love these multi-dial power meters.. could anyone perhaps give me brand or type info for those so I can try getting one?
Ferranti spring to mind. They are getting quite rare now though.
Do you have an organization who has to accept fire alarm installations like here in the US? The record drawings will show a circuit for the power.

Why not fit A dual back box for the fire alarm, 1 single socket for any appliance on the left & 1unswitched fused spur on the right for the fire alarm.
11:00 Paul shouldn't get emotional about drivers, especially BMW drivers.
I used to be one! 🤣
Your right there, it should be expanded to any knob in a German car, don't just limit it to one brand.
what board do you have at home and did you wire it
defo not compliant. Also check that panel is still a permitted panel. Some radio panels have been pulled over the last few years.
Was that the mcD next to the old st roundabout?
just to say i got my ticket in 1989 on the 15th Edition and C course and feeling really old lol
No vids for a month where has he disappeared to I wonder
Maybe a temp mains connection until a spark connects to a supply? in which case I’m surprised they haven’t asked you yet. Not all fire alarm engineers are qualified sparks which is why it wasn’t done correctly? It might also not be the main fire panel but a wireless Repeater.
You should see the new installs I see on a weekly.. jokers for sure.
not sure what the minimum install standards in effect back in old country, but down here, it'd be flagged the next time council does the building warrant...
I am not sure what the requirements for verification are but I know that would never pass a VI in Canada yikes.
If there is a sign saying , do not switch off , some plonker will ----- switch it off !!
For sure
Nice job and video like always
To right about taking photos. I always do when doing eicr as people mess about with the installation before you get back to do the repairs .. also you can show the client photo evidence as well as the test report .👍👍
Your mate looks like Phil Jupitus!
Nice wiring
Apart from the fire alarm panel not being hard wired into a spur what was sooo drastically wrong with the rest of the system? You said it's crap.... £100 would cover the metal clad spur to be fitted.
its crap because its of it , if they did such a cowboy move what else they did , also you say that the fix is cheap but you cant say that since the its been fitted in the last 12 and does not meet the regs
We always take photos an send them off, before an after photos prove you’ve done what you’ve said an then they can see it’s been done an covers yourself
There's room for a switched spur above that socket.
Is the place you first visited near London Wall? Looks very familar.
Like while testing or having someone coming out to sort it at a later date would be okay but this info should be passed over
Do you play snooker on the side? You’re the bulb of judd trump 😂, great channel, love the videos
Oh hell yes, Photograph everything.
I come at it as a renter, but I've got about an hour of video footage from 'move in day' of every place I've ever rented.
This is just common sense.
RECORD EVERYTHING!
Hello Paul 👋👋👋
Send photos to the local fire marshal.
I still think that you can’t talk to other sparks about things your not to sure about! To many people up there ars and think you should know everything before you work on your own
There something missing from the van.
The sign Subscribe from your back!!!
I've seen a fire alarm on a plug top plugged into a multi way extension! I sh!t you not! And the cleaner had their hoover plugged into the same extension 😳😂
Oh jeez... that’s unacceptable
Just gonna say, UA-cam was created on 14th Feb 2005. But I know what he means. Back then it was nowhere near as popular as it is now
That may say not to unplug but it doesn't say not to switch off?
Too bad you couldn't go back and say well you know it's not in compliance right?
Paul is fucking brilliant!
Because EXIF metadata can't be modified or manipulated with a simple hex editor? Nooooo....🙄
Hi Tom, have your done any Fire Alarm training course , trying to find a decent recognised course , any tips appreciated
FIA are the best ones in the UK in my opinion
Definitely FIA
Remember what stage Tom's jobs are at better than my own🤣
Wireless fire alarm, that would have cost the landlord a fortune! Shame about the standard it has been installed to
Depends on the jurisdiction... not everywhere allows them.
DUH! He is the electrician! Oh and it's 'Their' not 'There'
I wonder why??
(Yes, legal highs are harder to come by)
Love the fire alarm videos. Would U ever do a burglar alarm fitting?
Omg fire alarm on a plug top 🤣🤦♂️ never seen that before ! It’s just so unprofessional just to stick it on a plug considering how important it is . I’ve had to snitch today and feel bad but then like u say ur just doing your job . (Just shown it to my dad who’s been a sparky for 40 yrs & he just laughed 🤣🤭 )
To be fair no one knows the story on the fire alarm, but even glanding into the socked backplate is better than that.
common sense is like average intelligence .. there's a 50:50 chance your counterpart does not have it ;-)
Nagy gone bust?
nagy busy
