    70 years ago my mum took me to London. I was thrilled and amazed at the sight of this station. Over the years I have been many times and I still marvel at this structure. Your video is brilliant. Thank you

      +SMILEVIDEOTRAINS , Then you were around during WWII, my favorite time in History. And you must live in England which would have made it even more exciting time to have lived through. I envy your age in a way. You saw this history, not just read about them like me. Oh, thanks for the compliments on the video. I have always loved this station, too. I have always gotten the opinion that the London personal favorite station is and always was Paddington. My favorites are St. Pancras, and Waterloo.

      +SMILEVIDEOTRAINS I went to Sheffield in 2003 from this station. The Midland mainline departed where the Channel Tunnel and recently the Kent Javelin services are situated now. Trains to Nottingham, Leicester and Derby as well as Sheffield now use the modern terminal of this famous station. The first ever steam train named 'The Robin Hood' departed from the reconstructed St Pancras station since its launch in late 2007.

      TheRenaissanceman65 ...USA could use a little food rationing at this time. The obesity in the states is unreal. And with obesity comes 100 other health issues, high bp, diabetes, heart attacks, etc. And I’m sorry to say that the majority of obesity is in the poorer populations. Food stamps are at the root of this problem. Oh, I won’t bore you anymore. After all, the video is about train stations.

    I visited England in 2012 , stayed at a place called Horley, but every day I was on the train to London Victoria, I fell in love with London, St Pancreas, and there was a restaurant at Kings Cross I visited twice. There is so much to write about the two weeks I lived or vacation there. I love ENGLAND . I was in awe with the architectural design of that building. I even toke pictures of the steps in front of the building.

      cprtrain, agreed, I love St Pancras, I love Milan Centrale, I love Berlin Hauptbanhof, Frankfort Hauptbanhof, I really love Los Angeles Union Station. Hey, Captain Train, do you have any experience with photography in Russia at train stations? I am heading next month to shoot the St. Petersburg Stations. I’m worried about not being able to shoot there. I’ve written their embassies, but no one ever replies.

    To think at one point they were actually going to demolish this station and replace it with something like the hideous concrete box that is Euston today

    • @MichaelJirochVisualArtist
      @MichaelJirochVisualArtist  8 років тому +9

      I've heard some rumors they are thinking of restoring or remaking the original front entrance, the arch. (Ruston). Some of the entrance gates still stand. People are still reeling from its demise. Let's hope it comes to fruition.

    • @michaelhunt4445
      @michaelhunt4445 6 років тому +3

      Tony Merrett I heard they were going to pull it down and NOT replace it, diverting all trains to Kind Cross or Euston. Then sell the land for a fortune. Also heard they wanted to do the same with Euston Downside Shed, until the Depot Manager told the beancounters that if the land ceased to be used for railway activities, then the original had the right to buy back the land at the original price paid. The beancounters told him "pooh pooh" but when they were told the original owner of the land was the Crown, they "decided we had best not be hasty" lol

      Whilst Euston was a stunning Victorian building I think we have to accept that it will never come back the way it was. However we can look on the bright side and realise that the disgusting charm vacuum that is Euston station will be torn down and replaced with a new building for HS2. Again it's not the perfect solution but it's a damn sight better than what it is today.

    St Pancras is an incredible station. Looking at it from Euston Road it's a stunning gothic castle. Entering in under the blue arch and you're in an oasis of peace on the upper level. Stepping down into a shopping centre that takes advantage of the classic design elements before you reach the new extension which is a masterclass in European and especially German modern architecture. The diversity of trains is also staggering with Eurostar, Southeastern, East Midlands, Thameslink and various tube lines. It's truly one of the most incredible pieces of design that has ever been created.

    We took the Eurostar out of here in June of 2018. We got there early but was told that due to a SNCF strike, the first Eurostar to Paris that morning would be the ONLY one. Thank goodness we got there early! We had just enough time to check into the one train, get our bags checked by the French officials, then run upstairs to the platform to get onto the train. I never got to see anything in the depot and had no time for any photos.

    To think they were gonna knock this masterpiece down in the 60’s when Victorian buildings were considered old curiosities, and brutalist architecture became a thing. Imagine this gorgeous place looking like Euston Station instead. Ugh.
    Also, there’s a legend that says Queen Boudicca rests beneath the foundations of St Pancras.

Currently I am stuck here in Dusty dirty and extremely small island called Malta because of Covid restrictions. It was lucky not to get demolished just because of a man who want it saved and it's good to see it still stand. I note there were lots of people in the station when this film was taken but when lockdown introduced in March, the station suddenly became almost empty except for few people, mostly key workers and NHS staff all thanks to conoravirus. But now it is slowly filling with people as lockdown was easing.

    How did you manage to get onto the platform to get the East Midlands trains?

    • @MichaelJirochVisualArtist
      @MichaelJirochVisualArtist  8 років тому +3

      It's fairly simple. Before you start taking pictures or filming, one goes to the Network Rail office and get a permit pass. A sticker one just slaps on your shirt. The guys in the office ask a few questions to make sure you're not a terrorist or professional film crew with a movie, what have you. The staff workers see the sticker and one has a free pass anywhere in the station. Very easy. And the Network Rail people are great about it. Except at London Bridge Station. I must have caught them on a bad.

    I have been wondering why the UK and France have no Central Station Railway System, but Germany and Italy have it. In Germany and Italy there is always a Station named "Central Station" or "Main Station" in almost every City. In London and Paris there are no Central Stations.. why is that so..?

      Because all of the individual railway mainlines, were built by different PRIVATE companies. Connecting all the, then privately owned mainlines into one central station, would have created competition and undermined the individual railway mainline businesses; especially in commuting and areas served by two mainlines.
