It might look ridiculous when there is no traffic but when it is heaving with hundreds of vehicles you will be glad of the space because it helps to ease the congestion and contributes to keeping the traffic moving. Just make sure you are in the correct lane and it’s easy.

En el Estrecho de Gibraltar, la profundidad mínima es de 300 metros y llega hasta los 900. Solo son 15 kilómetros, pero el túnel deberá contar con unos 40 kilómetros. by plane, check-in takes forever, plus you have to organize yourself to go to the airport without your car (airports which are outside of cities unlike train stations), and statistically planes are later than trains, for example, it is much more common to have to stay in a hotel because the plane is late.

    When the tunnel was planned:
Someone: "Let's put the cars on trains, that will save a lot of time and fuel if they don't have to drive all the way!"
    Fuel company: "For sure! 😂😂😂"

The tunnel isn't just used by the car shuttles, freight and passenger trains use it as well. Letting cars drive across on their own would have required digging two more tunnels. And another major reason is safety, you really don't want a car crash deep in a tunnel almost 20 kilometers from the nearest exit.

For what purpose is all that empty space?

At peak travel times, it isn't empty space - it's full of vehicles waiting to get onto the train.
