Santa Teresa 1796 has zero burn and no added sugar. Much better than Zacapa 23. Not sure why you guys hate on it..
Daniel,
I've never had the 1796 but have considered it. I see so many mixed opinions on it. Some UA-cam reviewer said (in 2021) that it has almost no flavor except for a little sweetness and that it's bland and boring. But, yet, it's pretty highly rated over at a popular rum rating site that has hundreds of people scoring it - receiving an average score higher than Flor de Cana 12 and tied with El Dorado 12!
I'm not positive but I think I vaguely recall hearing a few years back that the 1796 didn't used to have added sugar but that, more recently, they switched to adding a small amount of sugar.
Anyone hear anything about sugar being added to this more recently?
There's always a small amount of sugar in anything that has been aged in Sherry cask (4 g/l in this case, which is quite low even for a Sherried dram like this). It's true for whisky as well when aged in such casks so that miniscule amount of sugar there's in it currently is most probably just from the aging.@@Best_Served_Neat_On_Ice
According to the official information (homepage) it contains less than 3g/L.
My wife is from Venezuela. We have or have had at least one bottle of every notable Rum producer from that country. Santa Theresa is highly considered there. But it's also a country that goes crazy for Buchanan's Scotch. It's just one of those things that lines up on their palate. I still have half a bottle of this in our cupboard. For a sipping Venezuelan Rum I'd first reach towards a Carupano 18 I just discovered. For less than $50, it punches with the more established aged names.
I can find this rum in Venezuela for around $25, of course imported rums are comparatively more expensive, what do you think about a 25 dollars price point for a rum like this one?
$25 US Dollars?! I think that's incredibly cheap! If you like the Rum, I'd buy them whole lot for that price! Thats the equivalent (nearly) for us in the UK to Bacardi Carta Blanca!!
Solera Aging is literally "Homeopathic Dilution" applied to aging...
So I bought a sample bottle of this because of your praise for it in one of your other videos. Now that I see this video, your praise was for the "Santa Teresa Claro".
As someone who is new to Rum/alcohol in general (December 2022, started my rum journey with El Dorado 12), the amount of burn was quite the shock. Adding a few drops of water made it more approachable. I'll have to buy another sample bottle or two and try it again, just to be absolutely sure but, I quite enjoyed this rum.
Mistaking your praise for the Claro, as praise for the 1796, got me to try this rum. To quote the American painter "Bob Ross":
“We don't make mistakes-we have happy accidents."
Steve to paraphrase one of your own comments "palates differ with age and expereince". You should not describe a rum as Oveated. If it does sit well for you then just say why. Using perjorative expressions will put some of your viwers off trying a rum when they may infact enjoy it.
LOLS... so. You're basing that whole comment on the Thumbnail, not on what I actually say in the Video...?! 😉 Watch the 12 mins of the Video, then let me know how I've put people off....
I completely agree but would add that another problem that both Santa Teresa and Zacapa have is that in my mind they have to compete with La Hechicera which is the superior rum.
I bought the bottle 2 weeks ago based on my UA-cam "research" and I 100% agree with your assessment. Not my cup of tea..
Interesting. I'd agree that it's not a top of mind, go to rum in my collection: not one I go to regularly.
BUT I disagree on it not being a session rum. With an ice cube or two, it's completely sessionable for me. I've had a few nights where there's been a group of us and a bottle has just disappeared!
Ah. Interesting. SO... In order for it to become a Session Rum, You've added Ice to Dilute it down. See i interpret that as "Not a Neat Sipper". So I'd actually counter that by saying that most Rums I dislike become a lot easier to drink after Dilution and Chilled. Can I ask, would it be a Session Rum without the Ice? Like Straight out the Bottle?
Well, I never "session" 100% neat rum. If I'm sipping for enjoyment it's a couple in quiet contemplation, so I guess it's a question of differing definitions of a session rum!
@@KernowNik 😂 You can’t change the goal posts young Nik! It’s either a Session Rum in its own rights, or you have to water it down! BUT. You have given me an idea of another Video… 😇👌🧐
@@StevetheBarmanUK 🤣
It's my session, I can do what I like!
I always looked at this but never bought it .but they say it's a beginners rum if I saw it at a decent price I might get it
I certainly wouldn't call it a Beginners Rum. Far from it. I think only a Rum Lover who regularly sips £75/£80+ Rums would call it that. It's a decent Rum. But as I said in the video, I personally have what I feel are Better Rums at a Cheaper Price.
@@StevetheBarmanRumReviews it is just stupid to fight over taste. I think 1796 is well balanced, velvety, and yes, the solera process shines through. Might go for Diplomatico ( Reserva) or Kraken, but really, what are the point of these debates over something based on the video uploader's taste? joder....
When Britons are "tasting" and assessing food and drinks... fck me.... :D LOL
Steve, being a zealous bourbon lover, I quite like it-woodiness, dry notes, caramel, e.t.c.But it's much too overpriced(((
Nice thoughts very relatable. I bought it for 42 pounds on Heathrow and I'm not that amused, however it's still a nice, dry rum.
Looking forward for a Dictador tasting!
Yeah. I need to get on the Dictador!
New Santa Teresa 1796 Rum Speyside edition
Sounds interesting. Probs not for me, but I like the idea!
This is a rum for people who really like woody 15 year old bourbon with barrel notes. If that's not your jam, you will only think it's OK.
