Is a Cayman worth bringing to Cars & Coffee?

  • I was excited to bring out the 718 Cayman GTS to its first Cars & Coffee meet! The one at Coffeebar Menlo Park is always a nice intimate gathering of nice cars. The small parking lot means a lot of folks end up parking in the surrounding streets and lots, but it makes for an interesting stroll around the block. My friend Oleg and I showed up with our Caymans and there was a very strong showing of Porsches at this meet. Would anyone even pay attention to a Cayman when there are GT3s, GT4RSs, Ferraris and Lamborghinis parked all around? Even a unique looking Lexus might get more attention from the crowds! Afterwards I went for a cruise on my favorite driving roads to put some more miles on the car and get more comfortable with driving it!

    Of course a Cayman is worthy! These are beautiful high performance vehicles. Bottom line, in my opinion, if you love the car you drive, it is worthy. We are a small % of drivers fortunate enough to own a Porsche.

      Well said. It just seems like a lot of people in the Bay Area are that fortunate, it's incredible how many Porsches you see around here.

    9:00 I know everyone says silver Porsches are overdone but will always be my favorite. That 987 Cayman styling is classic & the car handles way better than nearly any other I've ever driven, not to mention fun!!

      Silver looks fantastic on Porsches! Honestly it was hard to pick a color, you kind of can't go wrong with any of the options.

    Hell yeah ❤ the laws of physics have the last say. Mid engine trumps both front and rear equivalents for driving and handling ie balance, responsiveness, feedback, proprieception. Cayman GT4 is better than 911 GT3 particularly with aftermarket tuning and upgrades since Porsche deliberately detunes the engine in the GT4 so it doesn't outshine the flagship topshelf product over which it has the aforementioned natural advantages. I'd be stoked with a 718 GTS 2.5l. Enjoy brother.

    I put a microfiber cloth around my cup and also use the cup holder to hang my ball cap on. Hill hold assist in my 718 manual only works for 2/3 seconds before rolling backwards and the hill incline has to be a certain degree ! What about your gts ?
    Artic grey 718 spyder has my vote !

    Gorgeous car in the perfect color! When it's broken in, 84 will be a lot more fun in 2nd gear. A lot of guys complain about auto-blip but you can still do your own rev matching in Sport plus and just let the auto blip work as a back up. Enjoy!

      Thank you! Yes, looking forward to driving 84 with more revs! I do love the auto-blip feature, it works so well.

    They produce more 911's then Cayman's so yes bringing a rare car to cars and coffee is proper.

    • @86drive86
      @86drive86  6 місяців тому +2

      If rarity is a factor, I should probably keep bringing my MR2 to C&Cs instead! It definitely feels more unique and rare when compared to some of the other cars you see there all the time.

    You are brave using the left hand cup holder at any time but especially when canon carving. The only thing that goes in ours is small bottles of water with the cap firmly tightened.

    very nice video! I always like the Cayman over the 911, I had a 987.1 before and love the balanced drive. I'm now looking to get a 987 S.

    Of course! Especially when almost everything else there is just cheap, throwaway, ubiquitous Japanese econo box nobody mobiles.

    This is a great question. We have a Coffee & Cars Porsche Day coming up in Houston in two weeks, and I'm wondering if my 987.1 is worthy of being there? I don't want to embarrass myself. I love my Cayman though! Same spec as the one at the 9:10 mark but with Lobster claws.

    Any meet that’s policy is not “all cars are welcome” is a meet that isn’t worth attending.

    • @86drive86
      @86drive86  6 місяців тому

      Just to be clear, the Menlo Park C&C meet welcomes all cars... as you probably saw in the video, all kinds of stuff shows up, and it's great. I wouldn't want anyone to think that the meet itself is not welcoming. The question I posed was more in my own mind, as in, what car should I bring to the meet? I also have an MR2 which, had I brought it, would have been the only one at the meet and maybe been a more "interesting" or "unique" car to share with the community, whereas a Cayman, well as you saw there were quite a few there. :)

    Bay Area bubble. Porsche's are literally more common than Camry and Accord combined; bet the sales figures would back that up. Doesn't make them any more/less special, so find what you enjoy.

      We really do live in an extraordinary place! Pretty incredible that we see so many Porsches and other high-end cars driving around here. Despite my own personal experience so far, I was pleased to see that the Porsche brand ranked pretty high on the JD Powers reliability study for 2024, and in fact the 718 took the prize for the most overall reliable car. That could, in part, be why they are so popular.

      @@86drive86 agree. I often question is “perfection” and reliability a benchmark for me personally, when it comes to a non commuter type appliance. Options are great and to each their own!

    I must have missed your discussion about whether or not you think a Cayman GTS 4.0 is worthy of bringing to a C&C. Were you disappointed that it didn’t get as much attention as you would have liked? If so, do you have plans to change that?

    • @86drive86
      @86drive86  6 місяців тому

      The question of whether it was worthy or not was mostly made in jest, or as a way to grab viewers attention and encourage their commentary. A friend of mine joked that Caymans and Boxsters are so common here, that it's the "California Corolla". Somewhat of a reflection on how affluent people are here in the Bay Area. Obviously people bring all kinds of cars to C&C and I actually appreciate seeing all of them; hopefully others do too because I especially enjoy the variety that you see at C&Cs. I wasn't disappointed that it didn't get much attention, actually a few nice and appreciative people came up and complimented my car and asked questions about it -- I didn't catch any of that on video as I put the camera down and spent the time talking to them. I honestly don't think I would change anything about the car to get MORE attention -- I think the bright blue color probably already catches a lot of eyes.

    How’s the shifter feel compared to the MR2?

    • @86drive86
      @86drive86  6 місяців тому +1

      Right now I don't think it's a fair comparison... My MR2's shifter is a little grindy and 30+ years old, while the Porsche shifter is minty fresh. It feels great, but it does feel a little too long of a throw. Otherwise it feels fantastic. Oleg's got a short shifter installed in his GTS, so I'm going to have to try that and see if I will want it as well!

    Is there a rule what cars you can bring to C&C?

    • @86drive86
      @86drive86  6 місяців тому

      I don't think so, not at any C&C I've been to... the question I posed, was more of a joke about the fact that you see a lot of Porsches at Bay Area C&Cs, and bringing one more Cayman to one is like ... bringing sand to the beach?

  • @magpro99

    How does your Cayman compare to the 911 Carrera S you drove earlier so far? (I know you are still waiting for the break-in period though, so maybe not fair to compare yet) I've been looking at the 992 Carrera or Carrera S for my next car. I'm loving this local bay area content, keep it up!

    • @86drive86
      @86drive86  6 місяців тому +2

      An excellent question, and probably one I'll try to answer in more detail later as I get more time in the Cayman, and when I'm able to rev it all the way to redline. For now I'd say it compares very favorably, the Cayman drives very well and sounds fantastic, so as I had mentioned in the Carrera S video, I do feel like the Cayman will give you 90-95% of the Carrera's experience for a bit less money (new car vs. new car of course). If you look at the used market I bet the water gets a lot muddier, they're both great drives and maybe it comes down to what you want -- 911 will have a back seat, while the Cayman has a rear hatch in addition to the frunk so that is useful too. 911 will always be the top dog in the Porsche hierarchy though, and for some people the 911 style and image is just the way to go.

    I don't understand why you even bought it. You've been nothing but negative about it even when it's dumb shit you did lol. Just sell it and get something that will make you happy

    • @86drive86
      @86drive86  6 місяців тому +5

      Your comment mischaracterizes what I've said about the car, but I appreciate your taking the time to leave your thoughts. I am curious, what's the dumb shit you think that I did that made it break down? Why did I buy a Porsche? I could probably make a whole other video on this topic, but in a nutshell I've always admired Porsches for their intersection of performance, style, engineering, and racing heritage. I think most others who admire Porsche feel the same way. What I wasn't prepared for was a breakdown on the freeway with 333 miles on the odometer. If you watched my previous videos on the car you'd maybe understand why I was disappointed in the ownership experience thus far. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy having this car and I hope it turns out to be a one-time fluke that it had some kind of electrical fault. I'm not giving up on it at all, but if something happens that I don't like, I'm going to point it out. I feel like there might be too many people out there that act like Porsche ownership is some kind of a cult or fan club and if you aren't 100% devoted to it you need to get out. I'm going to keep sharing my experiences good and bad, so that others will hopefully have a better picture of what they're getting into when they plunk down $100K+ of their hard-earned money.
