      +Jovee Gillen I have to admit that i actually liked the first half of the show more. It was hillarious! At the second half, this whole "redoing the D-mails" thing just seemed unrealistic for me. RIght after we learned how enourmous the butterfly effect can be, Okabe is able to return to the exact same world line by sending "counter D-mails"? I dont realy think that it would be possible. But its just fiction anyways and the drama is what realy matter, it just bugged me a litle and kinda spoiled the second half for me. But it was still a great anime AND love story actually :D

      +Jovee Gillen I did, i tried watching this anime 3-4 times before finishing it the first 2 episodes we're so crushingly boring for me to watch. I'm happy that i made it past those because of people saying how good it is overall or I would have passed otherwise.

    • @katherinesanderson8990
      @katherinesanderson8990 8 років тому +9

      I never thought it was boring but then again I marathoned the whole thing in two days so I can maybe understand if people who watched it when it aired found it slow since they would have to wait a week between each episode. For me it just gave me time to get attached to all the characters.

      Brandon summerlin This series did made me very teary haha.
      Even the movie made it worse haha.
      Though I do agree of the opening episodes being very boring, but i think it's because they want you to know their normal life, get connected with them, maybe get attached to them, and it worked well mostly because of Mayumi. haha
      I don't want to spoil anything, but very good anime.
      It's like a Stephen King writing, very slow start but when shit gets real, it all gets real.

    This show was truly a masterpiece, I recommend this so hard! Their take on time travel is unique and makes sense with the plot without any paradoxes, i'm telling you you need to see this!

    • @evildrkirby
      @evildrkirby 9 років тому

      William Grand No paradoxes, but how do people (other than Okabe) remember things from worldlines they're not on? Just because Okabe's there? It's not like any of them ever actually move across the worldlines like he does.
      There's a mention toward the end that everyone has limited "Reading Steiner," but that doesn't even make any sense. If so, everyone should have vague "memories" of every other worldline on which they exist, not just the ones Okabe's visited.
      I should mention I really did like this show (gave it 9/10 on MAL, so far a pretty exclusive club), but it does have its (minor) flaws.

    • @battlerushiromiya651
      @battlerushiromiya651 9 років тому +3

      evildrkirby Okabe is the protagonist, so he needed to have a reading Steiner for plot purposes, other than that, he is basically a walking anamoly, so maybe those are some distortions that are caused due to his presence, but anyway as you mentioned minor flaws.

    • @KoiladaScrewYTHandles
      @KoiladaScrewYTHandles 9 років тому +10

      evildrkirby Reading Steiner was explained much better in the VN. Essentially, it's the Observer Effect Theory in Quantum Physics. It's a bit difficult to explain to others who don't have at least some understanding of Quantum Physics, so the VN, being much longer with more in-depth detail into real life neuroscience and physics, did actually take the time to make sure the player knew what they were talking about. The anime had to cut down a ton of the explanations of theories due to the time limit.
      Essentially, he observed the phenomena of a worldline shift, which is why he can remember. The other characters never directly observe one, thus their Reading Steiner is weaker.
      However, in the Ruka's ending of the VN, Okabe gives up trying to save Mayuri because he can't take destroying another's dream for his own gain (any ending besides the true ending is pretty much taken as a Bad End in the VN) and she dies. Ruka regrets her D-mail since it's what made Okabe feel guilty in the first place, making him give up on Mayuri. So to make her happy in the final hours of her life, Ruka uses the Time Leap machine to leap back in time and cosplay with her at ComiMa (an anime convention), and because she leaped, she observed a change in the past and, as such, becomes an observer like Okabe. The same thing happens in the movie with Kurisu - she directly Time Leaped and became an observer.
      The simplest explanation, actually, would be to compare it to Lucid Dreaming. When you're dreaming, you're not aware it's a dream, but if you're lucid dreaming, you are aware that you're observing a dream. It's the same with the Reading Steiner; Okabe's aware that he's observing different worldlines.
      The Observer Effect Theory is actually quite interesting, though. Google it if you're curious.

    • @evildrkirby
      @evildrkirby 9 років тому

      LetsRideRulz *googles to confirm*
      Oh yeah, it's the (proposed) mechanism behind the double-slit experiment. I hadn't even thought of applying that to the show.
      Although, I still say that explanation makes it worse on the show when it has anyone other than Okabe remember, to any extent, worldlines they didn't observe.

    • @e.t.291
      @e.t.291 9 років тому +5

      Cameron Morr It definitely gets better towards the end! I just finished watching it and even though it was awesome and thrilling overall, I really had difficulties watching the first episodes. The characters were more annoying than endearing, the plot took its time to go anywhere and it overall seemed like a bleak, grey harem-y slice-of-life more than an exciting sci-fi drama. I'm very happy that I managed to bear through the slow start. El Psy Congroo!

    • @Nothing_serious
      @Nothing_serious 8 років тому +2

      +Cameron Morr The slow pacing was necessary to better explain things about their concept of time traveling and other science shits. Otherwise we would be watching clueless as to what the fuck is going on

  • @monitoradiation
    @monitoradiation 10 років тому +66

    I think rarely does anyone acknowledge that episodes 2-11 were necessary for the show not only that it develops the characters but has a secondary function:
    They provide the required distraction on both in-show and as-viewed perspectives. The characters AND the viewers need to forget what *factually* happened in Ep 1 for Ep 20 to develop *emotional* attachments. It's a subtle technique to compartmentalize the mind of the viewer.

    Chaos;Head made me so angry. It was so good, and than it just ended as it began. Very interesting concept, but it just kinda ended. Now, Steins;Gate is one of my favorite anime. I have a soft spot for this anime, and I love time travel. I also looked up John Titor after watching it, and remember being surprised I never heard of him. I am heavily into weird happenings, and never stumbled upon him, for whatever reason. It was such an interesting reference. Also, the English dub is really good. I know some people will say otherwise, but it was really good in my opinion. They captured the emotion of their characters as the Japanese voice actors did. I love both versions. Ahhhh, such a good anime.

    I am DEEPLY in love with Steins;Gate, and I know that, personally, there wont ever be an anime to trump it in time travel. The way the story is told, the concept of World Lines, everything is just so fascinating to the point I don't think there can ever be another anime to butt-heads with it, let alone stand up to it. Keep in mind I did say "personally", so there may be another Time Travel anime (if one even exists) that you all like and think "Steins;Gate has NOTHING on ____ Anime!", and if so, good on you! You found something you enjoy, as did I with Steins;Gate.

    I don't get how people can say it starts out slow. I enjoyed every moment of it from the very beginning. Telling a story too quickly and getting to the good parts is bad and so is dragging on a show until its past 300 episodes. I find how they told the story to be absolutely perfect, I get so hooked on it I hit the next episode without even thinking. I especially love how they delve into time travel theories, hell they get even more in depth in the visual novel.

      HAKER, in the Japanese Internet culture, represents the "hackers" that exist in the arguments within Japnese online forums like 2ch. Users often threaten others by stating that "I have a good friend who is a super hacker and I'll ask him to hack your account to f*ck your sh*t over." Of course, 90% of the time it is just a lie. Others thus, name these unreal hackers as "HAKERS". This is why Hashida would insist on correcting Okabe because he is a hacker for real, and naming him a HAKER is like a sarcasm.

    I'm here to say that the English dub is amazing. The way you talk about the Japanese version is I feel about the English. I usually just stick to dubs when I can for convenience purposes, but I really feel like the English cast did a great job with their characters.
    Also, apparently I'm in a minority, because I enjoyed the first episode and how it works with the plot. Given how the story is set up, it starts out slow and progressively speeds up and throws a lot more information at you that builds on top of itself. There's a lot to sort through by the end when plot twists materialize in rapid succession--except they're not really plot twists because all the puzzle pieces were actually given to you. In the beginning. With the slow episode you end up overlooking. I think it was a very smart way to handle the plot.
    Wow, that ended up being longer than I thought it would. ._.

  • @horriblepizza4647
    @horriblepizza4647 7 років тому +2

    The "slow" part of the show is actually a lot better the second time around. Such is not only the effect of knowing what it all means, but also the emotional effect of all the events. Every subtle thing in early episodes becomes a notorious trigger for events yet to come, and the show becomes more engaging that way.

    I'm actually glad that we didn't get to see much of the characters' flashbacks or learned more about their past. It kinda makes the characters feel more like normal people and less like characters. Like all of them have issues normal people have as well, like how Mayuri used to be depressed because of her grandmother's death, Kurisu and Rumiho have family problems, Ruka is confused about his gender/sexuality, Moeka doesn't have any friends or family etc. None of them have any dumb or unrealistic isses such as "I shot and killed man when I was like 5 years old and have a major guilt complex because of it" (I'm looking at you SAO). And although we didn't get to learn much about them in the anime (which is understandable since it only has 24 episodes) there's still the VN and TONS of manga/light novel/drama cd side stories that focus on different characters, even really minor ones like Mr Braun. So I suggest you look them up if you want to know more about them, some of them are actually really good!

      Why does everyone say that the first half is bad? To me, it's as intresting as the second half, as you you get more pieces of the puzzle every episode, it has this mystery element that keeps it intresting. Also the interactions between the characters are so damn good, not only they make for some hilarious situations but they also tell a lot about those characters, without directly having the show shoving down your throat about how they act, like most anime does. Plus it's for a reason that you become so attached to these chracters in the second half: because they spent a hell bunch of time learing about them and how them, how they interact, etc. The first episode might leave first time watchers with a lot of confusion, but it's exactly that sense of mystery that keeps me going
      p.s. sorry if I made any grammar mistakes

    This is hands down one of the best animes i've ever seen next to Code Geass(both have an amazing seiyuu for the MC). Also if anything the slow start up added more to the build up and intensity of the plot, so I dont really see how it is a put off for some people since theres no reason to drop it so early. Its not like something stupid happens early on that would make someone not want to watch another ep. Its not bad in the beginning and even has it suspenseful parts to keep the audience wanting more. It definitely deserves its score and everyone should watch this masterpiece.

      Jack Carton So did I, but I give Code Geass a tiny, tiny bit more credit since it was twice as long as steins;gate and managed to stay epic for all 50 episodes. So I place CG as the #1 on my list but thats the only reason. They're both masterpieces so I needed something as minuscule as that to decide which deserves to be #1. I usually just mention both tho when anyone asks me which anime I think is the best anime.

    time travel is not a theory. It is something "observed" every day. I say observed because most people don't pay attention to it. However, geosynchronized satellites (which move upwards of 17,000mph) are programmed to adjust for relativistic effects. In addition this effect can be experienced on earth. Take a trans-oceanic flight for instance. During the course of the flight your speed (relative to that of the earth) is greater therefore you experience less time (a couple of seconds on a twelve hour flight).

      @stevenjames1150 10 років тому

      Wasn't this explained and dismissed as time dilation(Urashima theory) in the anime,because it sure did in the visual novel(which is even better than this already great anime for those interested).

    • @TBomb15
      @TBomb15 10 років тому

      time dilation is a way to time travel to the future, but if you want a "time machine" that can take you to the past I have the answer (which also deals with time dilation to an extent). The way to time travel to the past is to create a wormhole and to take one end of the wormhole and move it at light speed (so it experiences no time). Enter the stationary wormhole in the present, and you will arrive in the past. however, you can only travel as far back as the creation of the "time machine" itself.

    • @stevenjames1150
      @stevenjames1150 10 років тому +2

      I think Kurisu mentioned that in her lecture in the visual novel,although she did mention that it would be exceedingly difficult to prepare(find wormhole+find way to properly move it+make it move at light speed) and execute and would have little practicality to it.And of course there is the problem of "do wormholes even exist" as nobody has actually seen one.

    Now that's an anime review. Great job man! The show and sequel movie were so good, i didn't mind trying to look for plot holes and even if there seems to be some plot holes, it didn't really bother me. Dub was great too.
    I later watched discover channel (youtube) about time travel and wow, the author made good research, didn't know sern is real, the singularity theory, why it looked like a satelite, the different timelines (which once bothered me a bit with future diary)

    And yet again, your thoughts seem to be very similar to mine on a show, which will make your recommendations for shows I haven't seen yet extremely valuable to me if this pattern holds up ^^
    I had a hard time getting into Steins;Gate but when the experiments are over and shit is starting to get real, this show hooked me like few others in recent memory. What I also really liked was the great character development for Okabe and for the cast in general. I started the show not really liking any of the characters and being outright annoyed by Okabe and by the end I loved them all...except maybe one specific female character...Great anime. Great Review.

    The many different time travel theories out there are mentioned in the video. I'll have you know in the visual novel of Steins;Gate all the time travel theories are explained. The part is over an hour long and i can understand they skipped this part in the anime. But it's interesting if you are the scientific type of character. And it's pleasing to the ears to hear makise explaining the time travel theories :)
    The anime adaption is great. But the original visual novel is better.

      Doctor Who is pure shameless immature fun. It sure has a lot of flaws, but we just can't stay mad at it. (Besides, the fundamental nature of the universe is changed so many times that there is almost no such thing as a plot hole.)

      I just couldn't get into Doctor Who because most of friends are really a fan of the show so much. I only saw a few episodes with nine and ten with my friends But I just couldn't get into it. Part of its because one its long like over 8 seasons! and two i don't have Netflix. It gets hard just finding a single episode. I dunno maybe it's because I only saw a few episodes rather than finishing up a whole season.

    This was the only show that actually had a different theory going for them. The grandfather paradox always bothered me, like in Back to The Future (don't get me wrong, great movie), he would have still existed if his mother had never met his father, because he was from his own timeline. No paradoxes would have been created there. If you went back in time and killed your own grandfather, you would still exist because you killed your grandfather, creating an alternate timeline where you were never born, but you would still exist because the you from your timeline existed. This corresponds to the Multiverse theory. This is difficult to understand, and until proven, is just a theory, but Steins;Gate was the first to use this concept of time travel, and is what makes Steins;Gate a truly unique show.

      Also, is it a copyright thing that some of the images/clips shown of the show are reversed? SOMEONE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME.

    • @MichaelMcCallister097
      @MichaelMcCallister097 9 років тому +1

      Yea I was always confused about that in stuff like back to the future. If I go back in time and kill my grandfather before I was born I'd still exist because I time traveled and went to the past. And if you go to the future your not going to find an older version of yourself, because you time traveled. It would be a world that you haven't existed in for however long you skipped. At least, that's my take on it.

    • @monitoradiation
      @monitoradiation 9 років тому

      Chimera6297 Actually, according to the in-show information, the Grandfather paradox doesn't occur ever because it's impossible. I think the way they explained it is that if you try to do something that messes with the time continuity, the worldline will just change to one where the continuity is preserved (basically like sending a D-mail).
      It's basically what the attractor field convergence is for. It forces the world to conform to a worldline within a cluster where no paradoxes exist.

    I honestly found the slow start necessary. It really helps you come to care for the characters more and makes the various lightning strikes of pure emotion that occurs later on in the series really hit home. I can confirm this by telling you truthfully that Steins;Gate is the only anime I have ever watched that has made me cry multiple times in the first viewing of the series, and to this day I still shed a tear whenever I watch one of said emotional episodes. Hell, my heart gets heavy whenever I look at bottle of Dr Pepper. That is the impact this series had on me.

    Arkada's got the right idea:
    Time-travel is, by its' very nature, a fickle thing. The old addendum of, "Step on a butterfly in the past, and you'll radically change the future" is, while less than perfect, probably the best way to sum up time-travel. Being human is, by definition, being also imperfect. You cannot possibly know every individual outcome of any action that you do, or don't take.
    By preventing the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, you can prevent World War 1, and by that extent, prevent Germany from losing said war, becoming destitute following it, and allowing Hitler to come to power in hopes of restoring their economy, thus ushering in World War 2 and, by THAT extension, the Holocaust.
    HOWEVER, doing so would DRASTICALLY change the way the future would turn out, and while it could be for the better, it could also be for the worse. Who's to say that WW1 and WW2 didn't shape America into the superpower it became? Same with Russia and China. What's to say certain events in their histories that were less than stellar didn't shape them into stronger countries? Sure, the Soviet Union collapsed, leaving Russia destitute throughout the 90's, but they're slowly making a comeback, and can one day say that they're a First World Country once more.
    Overall, what one could consider an insignificant detail (hint: just READ about the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand; it's a literal plethora of coincidences) could turn out to completely and totally change the future. The best possible way for anyone to grasp this concept would be to read the short story "A Sound of Thunder", which is the entire basis for what we call, "The Butterfly Effect."
    Have fun, and Stay Frosty~
