Paid $5000 to go to school. Passed all 3 tests on 1st try. Got my CDL A w/Tanker! Now Prime says I need 6months experience😕Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for sharing yourself & your journey. I'll try Prime again in 6months. 🙌
Congrats man! Sorry it didn’t workout with Prime so far, but you’re getting it done regardless. $5k is annoying when there’s places that could train you for free. But it’s an insignificant amount for the opportunities it provides. Having a CDL opens so many doors! I hope everything works out in 6 if you still decide to give Prime another shot.
While I was doing my month long otr training I was on my phone at the end of the day. Even if I was in the passenger seat I watched asked questions. Trying to lean as much as I could during that time.
Training is hard. I've trained alot of guys here and they do what I taught them. I had them doing everything from driving, unloading all pallets, checking in, rotation of all products, check dates, everything there is to do. What they do after they leave me is on them. I gave them all the tools they needed, all the driving skills I've learned on my OTR career and local driving. I would believe they we would get together just fine. You can give me a refresher course. I never drove a fully automatic truck before. Who knows, you might learn a lil from me as well. Good video buddy. Keep doin what you're doin👍😎
@@timmathews803 if it warrants it… It’s a complicated situation when you’re a trainee because you’re new, and may be wired to think the company will take the trainers side😪. Both are equally accountable. This is how bad trainers/new drivers slip through the cracks.
Wrong. You are a trainer a coworker, not his manager it's not your responsibility too evaluate. Only too see if he needs more training. You should not be asking people about they personal life. . There are no bad students only bad trainers.

So I am thinking about coming over to Prime, and thank you for sharing this, do you think you could do more videos on explaining jailbreaking I have had my CDL since 2018 and I’ve always had Spotter positions or local positions where I never really had to worry about using the daybreak, and I’ve never really taught the right ways. I got my CDL through Xpo Back in 2018 but I know how to do everything else not to sound cocky but there’s a lot that I could improve on.. a lot of the times you see these videos where it seems like the trainees are doing all the complaining but I think it goes both ways so I really like your perspective as well.
I would have tolerated the trainee's phone thing about as long as it would have taken me to grab it out of their hand and toss it out the window. Sorry if that ruffles feathers, but going down the highway with potentially 80,000 pounds of metal being controlled by someone who has most of their attention to the phone vs what is around them doesn't fly in my world.
I 100% agree, that's utterly ridiculous and unsafe. When I was doing my MELT (Mandatory Entry-Level Training, it's a big training program for commercial drivers in Canada) and I was on the road with my instructor, I never even thought about touching my phone. If it rang I let it ring. The only time I took it out during training was when we went to a truck stop for a break, and the truck was parked and not moving.
Sounds like a good boundary lesson. They were trying to get over. You knew this and maintained your professional attitude toward the scam he was running. Good for you young man. Keep it up. Don’t let another’s misery drag you down.
Use all the bad in this 4 day experience for making the standards you expect from future students. Make a list. GO over this with the next student before getting on the truck. No surprises at that point. And you have something to go back to to point at and say remember when we went over this before you got on the truck?
I'm a 18 yr Vet u did the rite thing more than trucking jus Miles, listening paying attention learning is A must nxt time interview the student before yall take off the expectations the responsibilities time take your taking to teach them keep training driver
How long do you have to be a driver before you can train at prime? I only asked this because I believe personally that a driver that has only been driving for a year or two should not be training anyone because you have yet to gain the knowledge to be able to train someone thats just my opinion and I’ve been doing this for 25yrks

Welcome to training man, you have no idea how much I couldn’t wait to get my trainee off my truck after 3 months and running hard only making a extra $500 a week more than what I was making solo I was pulling my hair out, they think they know it all and wouldn’t wake up literally babysitting a toddler, after he got off the feeling being alone was the best feeling in the world lol 😂 those big revenue numbers you saw for two days ant nothing to the double the fuel your going to pay also more wear on the truck more maintenance , more money for food hard to cook when always moving, also paying your student 1200-1500 a week I was constantly making 6-7k gross a week as a trainer, but again it came out over the course of 3 months $500 week extra then what I was making solo. So much happier now solo man our lives are worth more then the pay they are offering. I’m moving towards local next year home every day making more than 100k a yr with a great company / Paid Time off / Full benefits 21 days of paid sick leave , I feel with my situation I thought training would of been my stepping stone to a better life for me and my family of 5 I support but it’s not what it used to be anymore so plans change, OTR is a stepping stone for me to get the Experience I need to get that great Local Job that pays more than the rest, family first ❤

My foot would be firm. It's fine to think of other ways to do something but ultimately it is your truck and they should do it your way. Just the same, they need to be receptive to why you do something a certain way. If someone comes onto the truck just wanting miles, don't walk, run! They'll be more of a liability than they are worth and eventually those students end up leaving when the reality of the job sets in and they didn't have the business mindset needed to come out here and get right first.
@@Peruviantrucker Even being a company driver requires a business mindset. Prime will want them to be just as efficient, if not more so than a lease operator.
I’ve been training for a couple of years so this advice is from trainer to trainer. Don’t beat yourself up If you have an uncoachable person, you can not train them properly and they may as well find a different job. I can’t believe that Prime has trainees go for that long on a trainer truck as the two companies that I trained for, we only trained new drivers out of school for 3 to 4 weeks. That’s long enough for someone to go solo so I don’t know why Prime does that long except maybe to get cheap team freight ran with very low pay to the trainers truck. Anyway, I wanted to say that if that guy had 30k to 40k miles experience and couldn’t back, couldn’t handle the jakes and other things, that guy needs to be booted out of trucking altogether. I had trainees at 3 weeks backing into docks with no pull-ups and had them driving down mountains without using service brakes at all. That’s just ridiculous. You did the right thing refusing to train someone who was that bad at trucking with months of experience.
I'm a recent graduate with my CDL (no restrictions) and I also have my tanker and Hazmat. I'm considering join PRIME because I've seen a lot of great drivers/trainers here on UA-cam sharing their experiences. You seem to be a very knowledgeable and reasonable guy. I could see the frustration yet you still restrained and chose your words carefully. Sorry you had to deal with the ungrateful trainee. I believe life is about obtaining as much knowledge and experience as one can. When a person/trainee thinks they know-it-all, it confirms that they've stopped learning at some point. I say good riddance on your behalf. I'm hopeful that I'll have a Trainer like you to show me the ropes. Keep up the great job both on and off UA-cam. I hope your channel and business grows beyond your highest expectations.
It's hard to be a instructor in my +30 yrs I have trained about 125 drivers you have to be like a coach and set aside your feelings or opinions good luck brother rember you are responsible for that driver Evan after he or she is off that truck ...document everything thing Evan after there gone they can supeana you if they have a bad accident...not trying to tell you what to do ....
Seems like a decent chap, but I don't see how a trainee at the 40k miles point didn't know how to hook + unhook a trailer and other basic stuff like jakebrake operation.
You really need to grow a set if you want to be a trainer or any position of authority. First day if they didn't get off their phone then oh well, drive to a bus station and kick them out.
Ive been a trainer on and off for 30 yrars. You handled this properly. Although id have told him once to get off the phone. Second time id have called your fleet mgr and got him off the truck.
I had a guttural, emotional response to this video. I see many similarities in our personalities and this was difficult for me to listen to. I’m sorry this was something you had to experience. Bottom line is it’s your truck, your rules. Idc how many miles they drove they are on your truck now and must drive it the way you want it driven. Who pays the trainee? Who will be paying for new brakes? If you do train again I recommend laying out all the rules and expectations you have upfront before the trainee ever gets on your truck. Lay it all out in detail like a business contract. I viewed my trainer as my boss. I’m a great employee. I’m not a great boss simply because I have a hard time imposing my will on others. It goes against who I am at my core. I was not allowed to use my trainers fridge, talk on the phone while driving and he would dictate the speed I was allowed to drive. Anyone would be fortunate to have you as a trainer. You want to share your knowledge and I can not imagine you would ever treat someone badly. ✌️🤘🤙
Thank you for writing this. To be honest I was actually impressed on how well the brakes held in those 4 days🤣. I almos want to use them more😜. It does seem we share some personality traits! I try to avoid confrontation and really don’t need to train. But I also need to put myself through TnT on the trainer side because I need get out of my confort zone. Learn how to deal with possible confrontations and grow in that sense. I even think it’ll help me when it comes to being stern when I have kids😅. When it comes to training in the future, 100%! Lay the ground rules from the start. Only trainees that are fresh from PSD. Finally, WOW! my trainer let me use the fridge. I thought that was normal🤯. That is crazy that some trainers don’t. But I guess they have the right to do so🤷🏻♂️
@@Peruviantrucker might be worth taking them through psd also? He was a good trainer and did soften a bit after awhile ( a long while 🤣) and gave up a small amount of space in fridge😁✌️🤘😁
Utah is a single party consent state. Also, It’s a dash cam, for safety. But theres a reason why I didn’t share anything involving them. I still choose to respect other peoples right to privacy.
Sometimes i feel like i had to put up with my trainer, i was DYING to get it over with. I can honestly say that most of my backing and training came from YT videos. Only reason i stuck around with him is bc i knew him from years ago, but MAN what a disappointment turned out to be.
I am going to be a driver trainer someday with another carrier. I am going to have expectations for the student, and I am going to make sure he has expectations too. But one thing is the cell phone use, he has two choices either learn how to drive the semi in a safe manner or sit on the phone playing on facebook. If the phone is his priority then he would be going home back to the terminal or send home on the bus. I have no tolerance for mobile device use. And another expectation is the driver is do what I say and no what I do.
Excusas my ignorance . Enlighten me please , if you would . My questions are : You are training someone , and you are paying him ? After you trained him, is he going to work for you ? It is your truck? And you are asking to someone for Permission or to approve IF is ok that you decided to kick someone off your truck ?? You pay for training? So the guy is your employee and he refused to do what you are telling him to do, and you are worried if you did the right thing ? I’m sorry , but I can’t wrap my head around ….how did you get into this mess ???. Can you or anyone else educate me , please ?
Alot of trainees seem to forget that they are still in their training process, and if they don't want to do what is asked of them and they don't want to pay attention to what you are trying to help them with, and they don't respect you, than yes they don't need to be behind the wheel of a truck .
Are you still training? I appreciated the video and I’m getting ready for orientation here in about 4 weeks. I need a good trainer and that’s my biggest fear is getting paired with someone that’s a terrible trainer.
Hey! No, not training for a while. TnT pairing is a gamble for both trainers and trainees. Know there will be a level of compromise. As long as you show willingness to learn and good attitude that will go a long way. Remember you will be in someone’s home away from home. But there has to be boundaries/limits to what is acceptable. Keep good, constant communication with your fleet manager. Voice any concerns if they come up. Ultimately, protect YOUR CDL license it will be your livelihood and that must come first. If the student doesn’t follow directions from the trainer on their truck, you need to kick them off. Wanting to just get your miles is the wrong answer. They are out here to learn. If they don’t want to learn, they need to find another job. Period.
Looking back in retrospect 95% of the arguments I had with my TNT were not related to the subject matter but an accumulation of factors, man! I was TIRED coming from a 9-5 job to having 2 to 3 hours of sleep (it took me a while to get used to sleep 8hrs straight with the truck in motion) to being away from home, not eating well and all of the fun stuff that comes with trucking full time with little to no room for adaptation even tho prime kinda take it easy in comparison to other companies 4 month into TNT my patience ran out i remember i dint want any ONE to tell me ANYTHING looking forward to the day i got out of that truck. Fortunately i had pretty good trainers and was able to build a good base from the beginning. I can say now i had pretty good trainers after hearing dozen of stories and 3 years later… at that time i wold have said something completely different. And not would not take trainees not matter how much more money they offer me
also companies should have a rule if u get kicced off one trainers trucc and they give u snother chance. if u cant make it with ya second trainer u shud b fired

I understand what your saying I do , but some of these things that your saying they didn’t know how to do, like hook and detach, macros, etc. is it really the trainees fault or is it the trainers fault? Now with them telling you no ik what I’m doing blah blah, I don’t agree with that what so ever, so yes you have every reason to kick them off your truck, I love your videos man keep it up
Here’s the thing. I think they are both accountable. I always say it’s like winning the lottery for both trainers and trainees. There’s going to be bad people on both sides. Attitude and demeanor are clear indicators tho. A trainer that cares, doesn’t just care about the miles from the start. A trainee that shows willingness to learn, shadows the trainer, asks questions… What I think happens is that trainers already have rapport with their fleet manager and when they get a bad student are less bothered with the idea kicking them out of the truck. Trainee’s however, don’t have that same relationship, which makes it harder for them to stand up and confront a bad trainer. They are just trying to get through the training to have their truck. Prime encourages both trainers and trainees to voice concerns. I struggled with it at first because it’s potentially my trainees chance at a good job. But like I mentioned I have a responsibility and I eventually rose up to it. Not everyone does this and sadly that is the only way Prime(and any company really) can weed the bad apples out. Or be aware of them at least.
My trainer, back in 1995, was a disgusting man, he tried to sleep in the nude, would pee in a bottle going down the road and pee on the dash and in the seat because he couldn't aim and then throw the bottle out the passenger window in heavy traffic. On my first night with him, he kicked me out of the truck so he could entertain a lot lizard. He never showered and his truck stank. I insisted on stopping at a truck stop to shower after two days of no shower. It made him mad but I stopped anyway. I went into the truck stop to shower and when I got done and came back out, he was gone. He waited for me to get inside and drove off. That ended my trucking career, I took a bus back home and never drove again. It was horrifying, The terminal manager spoke highly of this guy and said he was the best trainer they have and I thought, if that is your best, then I am done. This was for a company called Lisa Motor Lines out of Texas. Now 30 years later, I am thinking of giving it another go but after the port strikes and hearing that freight is bad and drivers are not getting many miles and carriers are shutting down, I am not so sure it is a good idea until things start picking back up. The last thing you want to do is talk down to or belittle your trainee while he is driving that truck down the road. Watching this video showed me that trainers can be mistreated too.
You can now worry about it! They should’ve stood by you strongly. If you’re fleet manager is not willing to stand 100% behind you you definitely do not want to train because there’s some crap people out there that could ruin your career. Trust me, I know I am a trainer. Feel free to holler at me. You seem like a very nice young man.
In the few days I had this trainee I was able to see the profit potential. But it’s not just about that. Its the whole experience. From the trainer/trainee relationship/attitude to the peace of mind to the profits. It’s not worth it to everyone. Hopefully I get a trainee that makes it worth it for me. If not I’m just as happy running solo
@@Peruviantrucker Maaaaaaaaaan, I’ve been on crazy adventures on these highways that I hope no driver has to deal with. From multiple “trainers” who didn’t train me, to having a drunk “trainer” that hit a parked truck and nearly got me arrested while I was in sleeper berth to running solo in Washington, Oregon, Montana and being full fledged solo bc nobody knew I wasn’t trained after repeatedly telling them I wasn’t trained. Not I’m in Oklahoma getting my reefer repaired
Man just know. Some people are hungry respectful and eager to learn. But even more will be disrespectful and know it all. I dont think i would want the headache of another know it all. Ive been around too many and not tolerant of bs anymore

I’ve been 8 years. Trained once never again. I can tell you haven’t been driving for more than maybe a year. Just keep it on your path and forget training until your ready to deal with a child mindset. That’s how they are these days
There’s probably going to be a time when you could get a kick out of training, be responsible, and make that extra money. I met a trainer at Prime, who laid out the rules, and if trainee didn’t perform, then this trainer knew exactly that routine you are confronting, a long time and many trainees ago! Some may wear out your lease vehicle and that’s unacceptable.
I dont think you have to defend your position as a trainer. ultimately you are responsible for what he learns while he is with you. If he is unwilling to accept his role as a trainee, you need to get rid of him..
Peru you tried he has to understand he is under you control as soon e accepted to your training, people have understood safety is not shared responsibility. Your safety come first.

Only at 9:48 and it already sounds like his first trainer failed him. Sounds like his trainer did everything for him. I’ve heard of trainers like these and Prime really needs to stay on top of trainers like this. These are people looking for extra money and not caring about teaching the next generation of truckers.
It's a training company it's their business plan. A real concern is having inexperienced drivers be trainers if you're a quick learner and smart it takes at least a year to get it down for most it can be two or three years to get to 100% and then only about half of experienced drivers have the aptitude to actually teach
Damn man you’re taking forever to say 1 word. How hard is it to drive that automatic POS truck? That’s why these trainees don’t respect any of you trainers , there is nothing special about being able to hold a steering wheel in those new automatic POS trucks. If he had to learn to properly drive a real truck and shift gears and watch follow GPS, and his mirrors all at the same time, he will listen to you very carefully . But these automatic trucks are idiotic. They remove the novelty and soul from driving a real truck and learning the proper way. They’re also not safe, the only reason companies use them is to save a couple dollars.
I appreciate your passion man. Manual trucks are definitely cooler and I would’ve loved to learn to drive in a manual. But reality is that a truck is a truck. Regardless of a transmission. The industry is moving towards fuel economy, etc. Do I care for it? No. Show me a job that pays more just because you drive a manual. I’ll enjoy my manual cars when I get home. Why is being on the phone a big deal with everyone? Was your trainee using a headset/earpiece? It’s tough for someone to stay awake if the so called trainer is sleeping when the trainer is still building up their driving stamina. If you are a good trainer then you would coach good behavior from day one but it seems like a lot of you trainers are controlling because I’d be sleepy if I had to drive in silence while you are sleeping 😂😂😂
I know this is an older vlog, but actually it's indicative of just how a lot of people are in so many areas of life in general! This selfishness and disregard for others lives in general is appalling! My takeaway from your vlog was this individual wanted to outright USE YOU in EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD without no regard to not only your safety & well-being, but also everyone else! I believe that at the point that you saw this, your plans was to not have your name attached to any part of that person's training! For someone to not care about how the truck & trailer's hooked up showed you all you needed to know! I empathize with every aspect of your experience with this driver and the sooner that they got off your truck, the better! You tried to give back what was given to you; I get it! But not under those terms, absolutely NOT. At the end of the day, your ultimate responsibility is to you and the public, not some yahoo that's not even sure why they even got their CDL. I don’t disagree! I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt because they had done their first 39k miles with a different trainer. And the first day you are getting to know the person, so some bad habits are not evident. But by the second drive shift the red flags were already there😪. I honestly don’t know how people like that expect to make it on their own. At some point there will be no one to do the job for you. And then it will come back to me😒.

Trainee’s should always look at the trainers truck as walking into someone else’s house. Gratitude & Respect goes a long way !
That respect should go both ways these Trainers for the most part use these trainees to rack up miles and barely teach a damn thing

Use all the bad in this 4 day experience for making the standards you expect from future students. Make a list. GO over this with the next student before getting on the truck. No surprises at that point. And you have something to go back to to point at and say remember when we went over this before you got on the truck?

I only asked this because I believe personally that a driver that has only been driving for a year or two should not be training anyone because you have yet to gain the knowledge to be able to train someone thats just my opinion and I’ve been doing this for 25yrks

Welcome to training man, you have no idea how much I couldn’t wait to get my trainee off my truck after 3 months and running hard only making a extra $500 a week more than what I was making solo I was pulling my hair out, they think they know it all and wouldn’t wake up literally babysitting a toddler, after he got off the feeling being alone was the best feeling in the world lol 😂 those big revenue numbers you saw for two days ant nothing to the double the fuel your going to pay also more wear on the truck more maintenance , more money for food hard to cook when always moving, also paying your student 1200-1500 a week I was constantly making 6-7k gross a week as a trainer, but again it came out over the course of 3 months $500 week extra then what I was making solo. So much happier now solo man our lives are worth more then the pay they are offering. I’m moving towards local next year home every day making more than 100k a yr with a great company / Paid Time off / Full benefits 21 days of paid sick leave , I feel with my situation I thought training would of been my stepping stone to a better life for me and my family of 5 I support but it’s not what it used to be anymore so plans change, OTR is a stepping stone for me to get the Experience I need to get that great Local Job that pays more than the rest, family first ❤

My foot would be firm. It's fine to think of other ways to do something but ultimately it is your truck and they should do it your way. Just the same, they need to be receptive to why you do something a certain way. If someone comes onto the truck just wanting miles, don't walk, run! They'll be more of a liability than they are worth and eventually those students end up leaving when the reality of the job sets in and they didn't have the business mindset needed to come out here and get right first.
Right! For example, this trainee was looking into being a company driver, so they had no care for brakes and fuel economy either…
@@Peruviantrucker Even being a company driver requires a business mindset. Prime will want them to be just as efficient, if not more so than a lease operator.
I’ve been training for a couple of years so this advice is from trainer to trainer.
Don’t beat yourself up
If you have an uncoachable person, you can not train them properly and they may as well find a different job.
I can’t believe that Prime has trainees go for that long on a trainer truck as the two companies that I trained for, we only trained new drivers out of school for 3 to 4 weeks.
That’s long enough for someone to go solo so I don’t know why Prime does that long except maybe to get cheap team freight ran with very low pay to the trainers truck.
Anyway, I wanted to say that if that guy had 30k to 40k miles experience and couldn’t back, couldn’t handle the jakes and other things, that guy needs to be booted out of trucking altogether.
I had trainees at 3 weeks backing into docks with no pull-ups and had them driving down mountains without using service brakes at all. That’s just ridiculous. You did the right thing refusing to train someone who was that bad at trucking with months of experience.
I'm a recent graduate with my CDL (no restrictions) and I also have my tanker and Hazmat. I'm considering join PRIME because I've seen a lot of great drivers/trainers here on UA-cam sharing their experiences. You seem to be a very knowledgeable and reasonable guy. I could see the frustration yet you still restrained and chose your words carefully. Sorry you had to deal with the ungrateful trainee. I believe life is about obtaining as much knowledge and experience as one can. When a person/trainee thinks they know-it-all, it confirms that they've stopped learning at some point. I say good riddance on your behalf. I'm hopeful that I'll have a Trainer like you to show me the ropes. Keep up the great job both on and off UA-cam. I hope your channel and business grows beyond your highest expectations.

Seems like a decent chap, but I don't see how a trainee at the 40k miles point didn't know how to hook + unhook a trailer and other basic stuff like jakebrake operation.

You really need to grow a set if you want to be a trainer or any position of authority. First day if they didn't get off their phone then oh well, drive to a bus station and kick them out.

Ive been a trainer on and off for 30 yrars. You handled this properly. Although id have told him once to get off the phone. Second time id have called your fleet mgr and got him off the truck.
Remember that you are the captain of your ship. Don't let no one take over what is yours.
I had a guttural, emotional response to this video. I see many similarities in our personalities and this was difficult for me to listen to. I’m sorry this was something you had to experience.
Bottom line is it’s your truck, your rules. Idc how many miles they drove they are on your truck now and must drive it the way you want it driven. Who pays the trainee? Who will be paying for new brakes?
If you do train again I recommend laying out all the rules and expectations you have upfront before the trainee ever gets on your truck. Lay it all out in detail like a business contract.
I viewed my trainer as my boss. I’m a great employee. I’m not a great boss simply because I have a hard time imposing my will on others. It goes against who I am at my core.
I was not allowed to use my trainers fridge, talk on the phone while driving and he would dictate the speed I was allowed to drive.
Anyone would be fortunate to have you as a trainer. You want to share your knowledge and I can not imagine you would ever treat someone badly.

It does seem we share some personality traits! I try to avoid confrontation and really don’t need to train. But I also need to put myself through TnT on the trainer side because I need get out of my confort zone. Learn how to deal with possible confrontations and grow in that sense. I even think it’ll help me when it comes to being stern when I have kids😅.
When it comes to training in the future, 100%! Lay the ground rules from the start. Only trainees that are fresh from PSD.
Finally, WOW! my trainer let me use the fridge. I thought that was normal🤯. That is crazy that some trainers don’t. But I guess they have the right to do so🤷🏻♂️

Sometimes i feel like i had to put up with my trainer, i was DYING to get it over with.
I can honestly say that most of my backing and training came from YT videos. Only reason i stuck around with him is bc i knew him from years ago, but MAN what a disappointment turned out to be.
I am going to be a driver trainer someday with another carrier. I am going to have expectations for the student, and I am going to make sure he has expectations too. But one thing is the cell phone use, he has two choices either learn how to drive the semi in a safe manner or sit on the phone playing on facebook. If the phone is his priority then he would be going home back to the terminal or send home on the bus. I have no tolerance for mobile device use. And another expectation is the driver is do what I say and no what I do.

Alot of trainees seem to forget that they are still in their training process, and if they don't want to do what is asked of them and they don't want to pay attention to what you are trying to help them with, and they don't respect you, than yes they don't need to be behind the wheel of a truck .

Hey! No, not training for a while. TnT pairing is a gamble for both trainers and trainees. Know there will be a level of compromise. As long as you show willingness to learn and good attitude that will go a long way. Remember you will be in someone’s home away from home. But there has to be boundaries/limits to what is acceptable. Keep good, constant communication with your fleet manager. Voice any concerns if they come up. Ultimately, protect YOUR CDL license it will be your livelihood and that must come first. Within reason…

If the student doesn’t follow directions from the trainer on their truck, you need to kick them off. Wanting to just get your miles is the wrong answer. They are out here to learn. If they don’t want to learn, they need to find another job. Period.

Looking back in retrospect 95% of the arguments I had with my TNT were not related to the subject matter but an accumulation of factors, man! I was TIRED coming from a 9-5 job to having 2 to 3 hours of sleep (it took me a while to get used to sleep 8hrs straight with the truck in motion) to being away from home, not eating well and all of the fun stuff that comes with trucking full time with little to no room for adaptation even tho prime kinda take it easy in comparison to other companies 4 month into TNT my patience ran out i remember i dint want any ONE to tell me ANYTHING looking forward to the day i got out of that truck. Fortunately i had pretty good trainers and was able to build a good base from the beginning. I can say now i had pretty good trainers after hearing dozen of stories and 3 years later… at that time i wold have said something completely different. And not would not take trainees not matter how much more money they offer me

I understand what your saying I do , but some of these things that your saying they didn’t know how to do, like hook and detach, macros, etc. is it really the trainees fault or is it the trainers fault? Now with them telling you no ik what I’m doing blah blah, I don’t agree with that what so ever, so yes you have every reason to kick them off your truck, I love your videos man keep it up
Here’s the thing. I think they are both accountable. I always say it’s like winning the lottery for both trainers and trainees. There’s going to be bad people on both sides.
Attitude and demeanor are clear indicators tho. A trainer that cares, doesn’t just care about the miles from the start. A trainee that shows willingness to learn, shadows the trainer, asks questions…
What I think happens is that trainers already have rapport with their fleet manager and when they get a bad student are less bothered with the idea kicking them out of the truck. Trainee’s however, don’t have that same relationship, which makes it harder for them to stand up and confront a bad trainer. They are just trying to get through the training to have their truck.
Prime encourages both trainers and trainees to voice concerns. I struggled with it at first because it’s potentially my trainees chance at a good job. But like I mentioned I have a responsibility and I eventually rose up to it. Not everyone does this and sadly that is the only way Prime(and any company really) can weed the bad apples out. Or be aware of them at least.

My trainer, back in 1995, was a disgusting man, he tried to sleep in the nude, would pee in a bottle going down the road and pee on the dash and in the seat because he couldn't aim and then throw the bottle out the passenger window in heavy traffic. On my first night with him, he kicked me out of the truck so he could entertain a lot lizard. He never showered and his truck stank. I insisted on stopping at a truck stop to shower after two days of no shower. It made him mad but I stopped anyway. I went into the truck stop to shower and when I got done and came back out, he was gone. He waited for me to get inside and drove off. That ended my trucking career, I took a bus back home and never drove again. It was horrifying, The terminal manager spoke highly of this guy and said he was the best trainer they have and I thought, if that is your best, then I am done. This was for a company called Lisa Motor Lines out of Texas.
Now 30 years later, I am thinking of giving it another go but after the port strikes and hearing that freight is bad and drivers are not getting many miles and carriers are shutting down, I am not so sure it is a good idea until things start picking back up.
The last thing you want to do is talk down to or belittle your trainee while he is driving that truck down the road.
Watching this video showed me that trainers can be mistreated too.
You can now worry about it! They should’ve stood by you strongly. If you’re fleet manager is not willing to stand 100% behind you you definitely do not want to train because there’s some crap people out there that could ruin your career. Trust me, I know I am a trainer. Feel free to holler at me. You seem like a very nice young man.
That’s why I don’t train anymore. Trainees who don’t want or can’t seem to take instruction. The few extra dollars is not worth it for me.
In the few days I had this trainee I was able to see the profit potential. But it’s not just about that. Its the whole experience. From the trainer/trainee relationship/attitude to the peace of mind to the profits. It’s not worth it to everyone. Hopefully I get a trainee that makes it worth it for me. If not I’m just as happy running solo

From multiple “trainers” who didn’t train me, to having a drunk “trainer” that hit a parked truck and nearly got me arrested while I was in sleeper berth to running solo in Washington, Oregon, Montana and being full fledged solo bc nobody knew I wasn’t trained after repeatedly telling them I wasn’t trained. Not I’m in Oklahoma getting my reefer repaired

I’ve been 8 years. Trained once never again. I can tell you haven’t been driving for more than maybe a year. Just keep it on your path and forget training until your ready to deal with a child mindset. That’s how they are these days
There’s probably going to be a time when you could get a kick out of training, be responsible, and make that extra money. I met a trainer at Prime, who laid out the rules, and if trainee didn’t perform, then this trainer knew exactly that routine you are confronting, a long time and many trainees ago! Some may wear out your lease vehicle and that’s unacceptable.
I dont think you have to defend your position as a trainer. ultimately you are responsible for what he learns while he is with you. If he is unwilling to accept his role as a trainee, you need to get rid of him..

It's a training company it's their business plan. A real concern is having inexperienced drivers be trainers if you're a quick learner and smart it takes at least a year to get it down for most it can be two or three years to get to 100% and then only about half of experienced drivers have the aptitude to actually teach

Damn man you’re taking forever to say 1 word. How hard is it to drive that automatic POS truck? That’s why these trainees don’t respect any of you trainers , there is nothing special about being able to hold a steering wheel in those new automatic POS trucks. If he had to learn to properly drive a real truck and shift gears and watch follow GPS, and his mirrors all at the same time, he will listen to you very carefully . But these automatic trucks are idiotic. They remove the novelty and soul from driving a real truck and learning the proper way. They’re also not safe, the only reason companies use them is to save a couple dollars.
I appreciate your passion man. Manual trucks are definitely cooler and I would’ve loved to learn to drive in a manual. But reality is that a truck is a truck. Regardless of a transmission. The industry is moving towards fuel economy, etc. Do I care for it? No. Show me a job that pays more just because you drive a manual. I’ll enjoy my manual cars when I get home.

Why is being on the phone a big deal with everyone? Was your trainee using a headset/earpiece? It’s tough for someone to stay awake if the so called trainer is sleeping when the trainer is still building up their driving stamina. If you are a good trainer then you would coach good behavior from day one but it seems like a lot of you trainers are controlling because I’d be sleepy if I had to drive in silence while you are sleeping 😂😂😂
I know this is an older vlog, but actually it's indicative of just how a lot of people are in so many areas of life in general! This selfishness and disregard for others lives in general is appalling! My takeaway from your vlog was this individual wanted to outright USE YOU in EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD without no regard to not only your safety & well-being, but also everyone else! I believe that at the point that you saw this, your plans was to not have your name attached to any part of that person's training! For someone to not care about how the truck & trailer's hooked up showed you all you needed to know! I empathize with every aspect of your experience with this driver and the sooner that they got off your truck, the better! You tried to give back what was given to you; I get it! But not under those terms, absolutely NOT. At the end of the day, your ultimate responsibility is to you and the public, not some yahoo that's not even sure why they even got their CDL. I don’t disagree! I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt because they had done their first 39k miles with a different trainer. And the first day you are getting to know the person, so some bad habits are not evident. But by the second drive shift the red flags were already there😪.
