You'll notice with the rest of this group~ALL of the ppl harmonizing have to use incredible vocal control. They are ONLY allowed 1 mic for 5 people. So they have to sing louder in order to make their voices get picked up by that mic BUT NOT loud enough that they might overlap his voice too much and possibly drown out his voice out. Other white groups got SEVERAL mics to work all the time as you'll notice in these videos. Nut during these early eras of music almost all black groups were VERY lucky if they got two mics to work with onstage...no kidding. IF you look at other videos of The Platters~THERE WERE ORIGINALLY 6 OF THEM in this group. BUT THEY STILL had them singing onstage with just 1 mic. Then they got rid of the other singer so it didn't matter if you had 5 ppl onstage total OR 6 ppl. If you were any black group you got ONE mic to work with and uou just gsd to "make it happen" out there for yourselves, that's it! So you gotta give proper credo to his OTHER Platters not just their lead singer when you react ok? Because I can tell you AS a former backup singer what they are doing IS extremely hard to do ok? It was rrally only in the early 70s rrakky that the whole mic issue hit better. You can see it change as you check out the videos chronologically. 😉❤😎 #PROUDTAINO #PROUDMOHAWK

Lead singer Tony Williams died in 1992.
Only You was his master piece :)

Peter John Pickles Yes, that is correct. My Grandfather (Tony Williams) passed in 92. Only You was a master piece, but smoke gets in your eyes and the great pretender were my top songs that I loved to hear,

If this was made in 1955 and they were about 25 at the time, they must have been born in about 1930, which would make them around 90 now. I was born three years after this [I'm 61 now] so films like this make me realise how short human life is in many ways. Happy New Year to both of you!

It warms my heart to see you two young men discover the "old" music, and fall in love with it. It's young people like you who give people like me so much hope for your future

I'm so glad you are enjoying all these old performers. This generation present understand why the baby boomers don't like current music. The older music talked to you and made you feel and think. It was about life. Not about material things or hating or guns and hurting someone. It had a message and you'd feel others felt the same and were going through the same heartbreak.

Thank you for reacting to this wonderful song. I knew you would like it. Freddie Mercury liked it and thought it spoke of his own life. It was one of the very few songs he covered.

The Platters formed in 1952. None of the original members are still alive, Herb Reed was the last, he passed away in 2012. There have been many versions of the group since, and a version still performs today.

I fell in love with Doo Wop music in the 80s from watching the movie Mischief. If you haven’t seen it please do. It’s a hilarious coming of age movie set in 1956 and the soundtrack might just make you fall in love with this type of music as it did me.

I love that you're doing these old classic songs & artists. For something a bit different by these guys, try "He's Mine" & "Roll With Me Henry" - with Zola and Herb (the girl & the deep voiced guy) taking the lead on vocals.

All of the original Platters are gone now, with Tony dying in 1992. Clearly you fellows haven't listened to the other greats of this era like Jackie Wilson who I consider the greatest of his time. Try him doing "Lonely Teardrops" here ua-cam.com/video/2nEfuE8Pw4U/v-deo.html and his incredible live version of "To Be Loved" here ua-cam.com/video/M_nIvYByiyI/v-deo.html. Try the great Sam Cooke doing "You Send Me" here ua-cam.com/video/5Vw1LbFfwqk/v-deo.html. Try the great Johnny Mathis (who is still alive) doing "It's Not For Me To Say" here ua-cam.com/video/igsVYj29o9Y/v-deo.html when he was oh so very young. Sam Cooke is the most influential pop singer of the R & R era since his style is the most copied. He was the first to use gospel rhythms and melodies in his music. His vocal runs are still used today. Jackie Wilson's singing was too difficult to copy, but everyone who plays with a microphone stand copied Jackie...and James Brown stole most of his dancing stage act. Johnny Mathis was the original shy "little boy lost", well before Sam Smith.

These two guys are great and the Platters were fantastic (not that rap crap you hear today) BUT I wish they would stop saying "Do you know what I mean" all the time and BTW, what is that very thick accent they have?...very hard for this Canadian to understand them sometimes especially when they talk fast.

@@kdm71291 Scotland!? I doubt it...my father was from Scotland and my mother was from England and I have visited both countries. I suspect the accent is from Manchester England but someone from there can tell us. Their channel under "About" simply refers to their location as United Kingdom.
