I love how happy he is to share the correct pronunciations. He seems like a nice fellow. I also appreciate being able to learn something new like this.
Like Hugo's manner to say 'this is easy!' while you are braking your mind to repeat after, hahaha. But the person is brilliant! Thank you for the guest
As a fellow Midwesterner, I struggle SO MUCH with French pronunciation. It seems to be a 50/50 chance on which vowels are actually pronounced, and I always pick the wrong half lol.
I had never seen your channel before but just had to click to hear how to pronounce these beautiful house names correctly. I love that Hugo was so incredibly gracious and never talks down to his audience. A first-class video all the way! Thank you! 🌹🌹🌹
It is impossible not to wholeheartedly adore Hugo. I've never met the man, but his personality and authenticity are so captivating and charming. He has me spending hours of my life enjoying and being fascinated by clothing that I could never afford in my wildest dreams. His enthusiasm and expertise on a subject, of which he is so passionate, is impossible to ignore. I'm grateful that I found his channel and I am grateful that you gave us something he would have not necessarily done on his.
@@Franeeky Not if you know the language itself and you hear reviewers trying to pronounce a name and it is totaly off. They school us about the fragrances or houses and they should know how to pronounce a name the way it's supposed to be. Imagine someone who doens't speak English and tries to pronounce your name, or just a centence and it is not even close to how it's supposed to be. For example, I've never come across a foraigner who's able to pronounce my name correctly. True; it's funny, but in this case reviewers should do there homework. It's like taking French or Italian class but you got a teacher who doesn't know the language.
Thank you so much for doing this video because I'm so upset when I hear some people literally destroy the name and pronunciation of some fragrance's house 😭
Hugo Jacomet is the man. Watching him visit the U.S and sit down with other UA-cam Influencers is just GREAT!! Class is in session. Thank you for this video.
Great video! Amazing introduction by Teddy, this was a chuck-full of pleasure to watch and hear! 😄 this guy Hugo oozes with knowledge, personality and charm! Absolutely loved this video never watched anything like this! Kudos! 👍🏼
Thank you. THANK YOU! This has been such a pleasure to my European ears. Now let's hope every other perfume channel sees this and starts practicing on the French pronunciations. It's been some painful years to have quality content be constantly butchered by the almost obligatory Eave Saynt Loaraunt - La Nooey day Loam's of this world. Hugo Jacomet is a true gem, and a feast to watch.
I've had to unsubscribe from several fragrance YTers who insist Mon Gurr-lawwn is their favorite perfume and repeats the mispronunciation over and over and over as they talk in practically every video about how much they love Mon Gurr-lawwwn, like a guy who claims to love me but can't be bothered to say my name right, lol.
The idea that a non-native speaker is going to be able to pronounce words in another language perfectly or even get their tongue to move in the correct manner isn't realistic. I have known many people for whom English is not their first language and they will NEVER sound like a native speaker when they pronounce anything. I simply grant them grace and understand their intention or ask for clarification. I loved the video! Some words involved a guttural sound that doesn't exist in English which makes it difficult. Perfect example is Guerlain...not happening lol, but I'll buy it.
216 REPRESENT!! YOU GOT HUGO!! That dude is the man. Sartorial Talks is the most unique and best show out there on YT. He and his wife rock!! She's an American too which makes for interesting cultural discussions. Teddy, you reppin' us well !
I love Hugo´s testimony, I shared it to several friends... regarding French pronunciation, I think one must make an effort to pronounce words as closely to the original as possible. I don´t know if English has the same pronounciation rule as in Spanish (my native toungue), where you should pronounce foreign names as if read in Spanish, which I find grotesque. So, thank you M. Jacomet for helping the anglophone´s learn how to properly pronounce in French.
I don’t know if English has a *rule* per se, in that regard, but I think it’s just the normal thing most people do around the world. When you only speak your native language, you have absolutely nowhere else to pull from, so you read it like it’s in your language. Everyone I’ve met from around the world does this. However, I agree with you, we should make an effort to pronounce it correctly and respect where the words come from by at least researching and attempting it.
But that’s actually more accurate to pronounce as if it’s in Spanish than in America English because Spanish for the most part still retains its European pronunciation because of its influence it has had from its neighbors
I live in the Deep South where there are still a lot of old French place names, but nobody pronounces them according to French rules. The town in Mississippi called Gautier is pronounced GO-shay, Saucier is pronounced SO-shay. D’Iberville is pronounced Dee-EYE-ber-ville. In New Orleans Chartres street is pronounced CHAR-ters street. There are many examples. However, Mobile Alabama must always be correctly pronounced Mo-BEEL. Once the Anglos moved in they largely refused to pronounce French.
And if you pronounced it correctly, no one would understand you and you’d be corrected. So as much as it hurts, you are forced to follow the masses and mispronounce along, right?
Finally! A much needed sequel to Super Dacob's clinic on pronunciation. Wonderful stuff from Hugo. One of the few times I've ever heard "Musc" from Musc Ravageur and "Lutens" pronounced correctly. 🤭 There's an S!
hugo, sven from gentleman's gazzette and the entire team of Mr porter are the trifecta of purposeful and impactful men's style and dare i say ettiquette teaching channels...
And wow the "names ending in -i.a.n. are probably from Armenia" is a cool tidbit. I have a buddy who's from Armenia and sure enough his name ends in -ian.
Adorable. Will follow his channel right away, even though menswear is not a main interest, but I love craftsmanship and attention to detail in general. So glad my high school French came in handy! (32 now) I’m not great at speaking French but at least now there’s confirmation that I did not commit any blunder with these names. 😅 Just need to work on my “r” a bit more. As an Eastern European with quite a difficult name to pronounce, I have an enormous respect for all brands and people who care about staying true to their roots or/and are paying tribute to a culture/important figure by pronouncing a name correctly (or as close as possible). Very informative video!
Hugo and I have communicated before. He is one of the elite in the world of what it is to be a truly stylish gentlemen. He along with Kirby Alison and a few others are the ultimate authorities of style.
We Americans will do our best to correctly pronounce all French names - but we will have an American accent just as you will have a French one. For what it’s worth, I do love all things French and think the language is beyond beautiful. And I think it goes without saying that American women are huge customers of French perfume. My personal favorite is Chanel. Enjoyed this video ver much. Thank you.
Wonderful stuff, Hugo is a legend and an icon. For many years my signature fragrance was Van Cleef & Arpels pour homme , now its discontinued ..so I rotate between Kouros and Eau Sauvage Parfum now.. If I saw Hugo on the street I would imagine he would wear something like Eau Sauvage or Caron Pour Un Homme or maybe even Givenchy Xeryus . PS I just ordered Hugo's book " The Parisian Gentleman" and cannot wait to read it.
I just finished watching you and Hugo on his channel sharing your knowledge on watches i love it now im tuned in bout to watch Hugo give some knowledge on fragrance love the calbos only with taste makers
The sound of the name Gautier in the French pronunciation always makes me laugh as that phonic sound in Turkish mean to 'eat arse'. Yemek is the verb 'to eat' in Turkish, and the word Gutt is the Turkish equivalent of 'arse'. So Gautier is 'eat arse'.... (or ass for the Americans).
I am so glad you got with Hugo Jacomet. He and Sandra are incredible people, and have taught me so much. In fact you could say Hugo was really responsible for getting me into watches and bringing LF and Phillipe Dufour to my attention, not that I can afford either. Incredibly generous people, I _really_ hope you do more collaborations with them.
I remember see Hugo In a video before. He said I only drink one or two glass even though big bottle on the table now. Then he talked about different perfumes
According to the sensational book "The Ghost Perfumer", mainly plotted over the shady Creed brand and Olivier Creed's dirty tricks to snatch formulas of famous perfumers (i.e. Bourdon's Cool Water iterations) , the Montale brand name was found by a shady duo in 90's, at a time when the Italian footballer Vincenzo Montella was quite famous. And they simply liked the luxury sounding aura of the name, and come up with Montale. (And Pierre Montale is a fake name to match the brand's fake story, originally the founder is Pierre-Louis Repellin, a fraud-convicted person in the industry due to copying a Jean Paul Gaultier fragrance and bottle for a pre-Montale brand he attempted first).
Why these brands are not included : Etat Libre d'Orange, Pierre Cardin, Comme De Garçon Ermenegildo Zegna L'Occitane En Provence Guy Laroche Xerjoff Let your tongue do the 12 steps of yoga.
Wow! Loved how Hugo was dropping nuggets of knowledge for each brand.
