In the early 90’s I worked in a distillery in KY and most brands were blended to a profile and there was an abundance of aged bourbon so even the low price brands had a good taste. Today because of demand we have an abundance of young bourbon and single barrel. Good tasting bourbon is harder to find. But I think one of the benefits today is taking the young bourbon and finishing it to get a good taste. I admire Makers Mark in how they blend to their taste profile for a consistent product and also do excellent finishing to produce some excellent bourbon. So IMO we have lost the availability of aged bourbon but gained better tasting young bourbon thru finishing.

White Lithium Grease is going to last a lot longer than WD30 on that squeaky chair. - Someone who has been battling squeaky doors for years.

Actually WD20 is better than White Lithium Grease and WD30 and maybe even better than WD40* i gotta say that brewzle is in fact as dumb as he looks.

For me, there are too many producers. The bourbons being "crafted" are most bad and over-priced. If, for some reason, a producer gets it right, you'll never find a reasonably priced bottle of it. This makes it harder for consumers to walk in a store and find something tasty. The market is overstuffed and under delivered. Maybe the squeaky chair is making me ornery?😅

I was living in Idaho Falls 10-12 years ago when I bought my first 2 bottles of bourbon ever. Mostly an LDS community with not a ton of alcohol drinkers. What were those first 2 bottles on the shelf at retail price of $74.99? None other than William Larue Weller! Never had it since but that Christmas season was great now looking back!!!

I've been drinking Bourbon for 30 years. I also live in Kentucky. While I'm happy the industry is doing well, there are a ton of great people in the industry and I'm happy for their success, I despise what the consumer experience has become. I didn't hunt Bourbon at all in 2023 and I drank less Bourbon in 2023 than I have in years. It almost feels dirty admitting this, but I'm so turned off by not being able to get what I want, I'm just going to start drinking more Scotch. The flippers, hoarders, price gouging, mediocre product, overpriced premiums, etc. Has beat me. I give up. If I can't get what I want, living here in Kentucky, the industry has failed me. I hung in there as long as I could.

Thank you so much for tackling this question. If I could’ve asked you one question, it probably would’ve been a variation of this one. I’ll readily admit I’m a Johnny-come-lately but I appreciate hearing the history (far and recent) of bourbon just as much as the whiskey itself.

I worked as a brewer at a brewpub back in 2000 when craft beer was in its infancy.
I think we can definitely look to some aspects of the craft beer industry to examine this question. As the craft beer world was beginning to explode in the very early 00’s, you had these brands/beers that were hard to get (Zombie dust, Pliny the elder, etc). People would stand outside for hours to get bottles. Production ramped up, more people got into the business and you saw an explosion of styles and new flavors. We’re they all good? Heck no. A big difference between bourbon and beer is that you can get a brewery up and running with your own product in a fraction of the time and cost. The number of times I had a beer at a brewery started by a guy who had “really good homebrew so decided to start a brewery” is incalculable.
So, was this good for consumers? Well, you can now get zombie dust on the shelves everywhere. And there are more options than ever. But there is more crap out there than ever. So, the answer is “yes and no”.
The explosion of different finishes and blenders trying to do something different (think Amburana) is a natural part of any product’s growth in popularity.
Where will bourbon be in 10 years? Will we see a contraction of the market like we’re beginning to see in craft beer? What spaces and techniques (eg. using different yeasts) currently not being exploited will be the “next big thing”? These are the more difficult questions to answer and ultimately more important to the sustainability of the market and therefore the consumer.

2013 and 2014 Stagg Jr. was everywhere. $40-$50. Ahh, the good ole days. By the Fall 2014 Batch 3, I was smart enough to stash a bottle back. I forgot I had bought it until I cleaned out a kitchen cabinet last year. I was so damn excited. Stagg Jr wasn't near the icon it is now back then. I also found an older ECBP right beside it. It's amazing what you can hide from yourself and forget about.

My opinion only. The growth of the industry has aided consumers.....but from the perspective that the growth has gotten more NDPs, Blenders and Craft Distillers into the game and made the big DPs lay down more barrels. Many of the NDPs, Blenders and Craft Houses have produced some great products. It has allowed more people to sample and buy good products without having to wonder if they'll ever get a chance to buy Blantons, ER, BTACs, Pappy and other products that are limited release or highly sought after. No doubt, there are bad products being put out by people only interested in the $$ instead of the desire to put out a truly great product. I believe those will be filtered and hopefully die a quick death. Hopefully the bad stuff will be identified and the bad producers will be identified. The industry.....and hopefully discerning consumers....will help to filter them out. The growth has put so many reviewers, both on websites and and you tube, all I have to do anymore is to spend about an hour looking up a whisky to determine if I want to try it or not. There are usually reviews to be found. I still dont know how I feel about Total Wines takeover of the middle shelves with their own sourced product, relegating all the other brands to the top or bottom. Classic retailer move. Cheers.....squeak away!!

I think the over all is good. Plenty of mid range on the shelves and honestly driving interest in all spirits and coctail crafting as well. I see people interested in rums and irish and a renewed interest in scotch from the american market. Also just the events and clubs that pour into local restaurants and bars.

More selection is always good. Normally that drives price competition. Not so much in the current market but I am refusing to buy new products. I go back to my top 10 and know what I’m getting. The consolidation phase will hit eventually.

All the gripes over availability are usually pertaining to the Buffalo Trace products. Problem is, everyone still wants them. Even the people trashing BT regularly. If the price is right, the haters buy it still. The crazy people still buy it at the marked up prices. The status symbol of it and the online bragging rights still make people do it. If more people would just try certain things at a bar first, they might give up the chase when they realize some things are not worth it..

Right? My experience with Knob 12 is like that. I bought it at 70 bucks because it was my 12th anniversary and everyone and their mom raved about it, I also bought a bottle of Baker's 7 that day as well for 60 bucks. I enjoy the bakers far more.

Absolutely NOT. You UA-camrs that get bourbon that regular consumers can’t get. You all brag about it. You really don’t want your opinion either. We want to go to the store buy a bottle and enjoy it or don’t enjoy it. I can’t go to the store and buy a buy a bottle of Weller or Buffalo Trace hell even a bottle of Knob Creek 12 because of youtube. I’m so fn tired of these channels. We don’t care what you all like. We want to go to the liquor store buy these bottles and make our own options. But UA-camrs especially in Ohio have ruined everything it’s bullsh!t. Yes regular Joe’s aren’t getting these bottles because of UA-cam channels.

I will say I've seen more available "allocated/unicorns" than i have in awhile @ or close to msrp. Baker's 13 $130, KC 18yr $160, eight bottles of Old Carter $199 etc. Although imo I believe its a combination of We have more bottles than we can drink, and this is a shitty economy! And when you're just trying to get by you have to do without ie cool bottles of whiskey 😂
