- ♦Edward had accomplished little, and while David had kept his throne and his nation’s freedom, the disconnect between the Scots and the English would never be fully resolved. This war was over, but it wasn’t the first, and wouldn’t be the last. Nor would it be Scotland’s final bid for independence…

Wow. As a Turk, I had heard of the Scotland-England rivalry, but I did not know it was this competitive. I thought it was based more on one-sided English superiority. I congratulate the Scots for their honorable struggle.
You should look up information about the stuarts, Scottish kings who ended up on the throne of england, really interesting
Indeed!

Robert the Bruce and other lord was just a cowards. William fight for Scottland without the help of these cowards. Because they know if they win the war Sir William will be the King of Scotland. So these coward playef Neutral and wait for the throne to be given to them if England won. Imagine if Robert The Bruce and othet Lords help Sir William? Im a Filipino and I love Scottland. And I love Sir William Wallace. Damn that was brave! ❤
Your understanding is lacking, somewhat.
Wallace wasn't fighting for the common Man. He was fighting for himself. He was minor nobility, so didn't have as much to lose as the main players, such as Bruce. The Nobles had much to lose by running in blindly. They had lands in England, remember, Scottish Nobles were of Norman stock, just like the English Nobles. They were of the same blood, and had in fact moved north from England where their families/ancestors all had land and therefore, money, and therefore, standing.
Bruce and many other Scottish Nobles were well known for fighting with the English when it suited them, then fighting against the English when it suited them.
Wallace would NEVER have been crowned King of Scots, he wasn't Noble enough, he was of Welsh stock(Wallace has the same etymology as Wales, and means 'foreigner'.) and therefore a Briton, not Norman. Andrew de Moray was the main hero, not Wallace. de Moray was the seasoned soldier. He had been involved in the taking of Carlisle in 1296 along with his Father, Sir Andrew de Moray. He was captured at the Battle of Dunbar(mentioned in this video), his Father was also captured and imprisoned in London, where he died. Andrew de Moray was imprisoned at Chester Castle. He escaped in the winter of 1296, and made his way North to his Fathers lands, whereupon he raised an army and went about freeing the settlements and Garrisons. Wallace moved North, de Moray moved South and the two armies amalgamated in Perth, from where they made their way to Stirling.
It was indeed de Moray's leadership, experience and tactics which won the day at Stirling Bridge. Sadly, de Moray was mortally wounded and would die several months later as a result. Wallace didn't know how to lead an army, or tactics, and he totally messed up at Falkirk, choosing the wrong ground and tactics. The Scottish army was wiped out, and he ran. Once he came back, he was captured by a fellow Scot, Sir John de Menteith and sent to England for trial and execution.
Don't be fooled into believing Wallace was a hero, and Bruce was a coward. These were very different times. Freedom didn't mean the same then, as now, Independence was very different too.
Scott, well written and such an understanding of real history 👍
Love how Scone Abbey is labelled as Stone Abbey in the map 😂

I was born in shetland which obviously now is scottish but back then i wouldve been wholly looked after by the Norwegian gov
Go further back you'll find vikings invaded and killed all the males. So it wasn't Norwegian to start with, same for Orkney and lot of other islands on Scotland's western seaboard.
@Wull-cfc67 to be clear vikings were Scandinavian. Denmark Sweden and NORWAY = Scandinavian? In 1469 shetland was annexed to scotlland as part of a dowry for a marriage. Before then they were used as stonghold for vikings under Norwegian and Danish rule for about 600 years. Also there's historical sights in shetland that predates the vikings and the picts with neolithic archaeological sight dating back too 2500 bc filled with norse cutlery bowls tools ect but yeah not Norwegian at all 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@wetflannel6343 the neolithic sites date to between 5000 and 6000 years ago. The picts around 300 AD. Scandinavian to 8 & 9 century. Where did you read Norse artifacts dating back 2500bc ?

The de bruce's changed sides between England and Scotland so many times, I am surprised that Robert de Bruce knew what side he was on at Bannockburn.!!!!
As for your assertion about Scotland's greatest king, I think you need to read some real history.!!!
Genuine Q Who is Scotland's greatest king in your opinion?
If we still lived in the medieval era this would still be relevant but now there are still a number of scots who think England still want to conquer them and rile at a fight that just isn’t happening. Independent Scotland will work only if true leaders come to the fore and prove themselves capable of making Scotland independently successful. Trouble is throughout the uk we have no political leaders of people.
Good video but should have added the odds the Scottish 🏴 were fighting against! Stirling brig was 10 to 1 in the English favour!!! And a lot of Scottish clans were also fighting for the English along with the Welsh and many more
@Epicgeezerthe next good documentary should be on how the Irish repeatedly kicked the avkings out of Ireland when the Vikings ran roughshod over England and the Saxons. That some history that is forgotten. In 1014, the Irish wiped out a large Viking force north of Dublin in Clontarf. The Vikings took full control at that time of England as the English king fled to France and Knute took over. The Irish stomped the Vikings through out the Viking age. The Vikings basically made peace on Irish terms with the Irish and the Irish Kings allowed them to maintain trading ports in Dublin, Cork, and Waterford. Whereas the Franks bought off the Vikings by giving them Normandy and the Vikings always controlled half of England by holding the Danelaw territory in central England.
@@michaelconnor5378 What a load of rubbish
@@michaelconnor5378 Erm the Vikings founded Irelands capital, Dublin. And the Vikings only took over the North of England, mostly Yorkshire. And King Alfred crushed the Vikings in 838 and took the Danelaw territories back from the Vikings. Alfred's grandson, Athelstan, pushed English power north as far as Scotland and was the first king to claim to be 'King of all England'. In AD954, the Anglo-Saxons drove out Eric Bloodaxe, the last Viking king of Jorvik. Cretin.

The simple answer is that England tried to conquer Northern France and Scotland at the same time.
England could have fostered good relations with their northern brothers and united the island as a sort of loose confederacy, but English kings seemed to hate the idea of diplomacy.
For all their talk of honour and chivalry, these medieval lords and knights were nothing more than greedy, scheming snakes. The lot of them. Being honourable is a bit like heterosexuality. If you constantly have to speak about it, changes are you're compensating for something.

For as long as a hundred of us remain alive, we will never on any conditions be subjected to the lordship of the English; for it is not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we fight, but for freedom alone, which no good man gives up except with his life'.

As an American, I get it. we have North and South here that's broke out in severe violence in our young history. This is over a 1k years of off and on fighting very interesting to learn about some times I'm on England side but other times I pick scottland. I grew up in New England, so that's why I got into English history. My state/ commonwealth, as its still called, still has the English lions from when they controlled the colonies on some older buildings in Boston.
The north-south dynamic is very interesting indeed. And to think it was started before Scotland and England even existed. The romans essentially started it when they took over what is now England. Scotland was a bit too far north for them to stretch to to occupy for long enough, which basically gave 'England' the head start in population, infrastructure and weaponry. The divide of wealth and numbers was so evident that it ended up being roughly the same boarder long after the Roman empire ended. They were underdogs from the very start. Makes you wonder how things would have been different if the Roman empire had conquered the whole island. Would Scotland and France have taken over England? Maybe the British Empire would have never came to be. Then there wouldnt be a New England. It's crazy to think how far back it all goes. Then you think about wars today and how much impact it could have in another 1000 years

the concept of "conquest" is so funny and misleading to normal people.... most of you never consider that "conquering" just consisted of one guy telling another guy "ok yeah you're my boss and im gonna give you some money sometimes"... then this guy would go back home and the other guy would be like "yeah fuck that guy, I just said that shit so he'd go away"... the idea of kingdoms and nations and stuff in medieval times is actually kind of crazy and funny, it's a modern idea applied to the past... no common person in these times had any concept of a state, a nation, or anything like that. In 1066, following the death of Edward the Confessor, William invaded England, leading an army of Normans to victory over the Anglo-Saxon forces of Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings,
Alfred the Great (c. 849 - 26 October 899) was King of Wessex from 871 to 899. He was the first king from the British Isles to call himself the 'King of the Anglo-Saxons' and so he is sometimes said to be the first English king. Alfred started the Royal Navy in the 9th century.

My point is that England was conquer by Normandy.
1066.
French lead England then England and Scotland become British.
(So the French conquered )
Interesting, putting to note Scotland where poor asf and couldn't colonise, so Scotland had no choice but to join England and Wales
Scotland had the chance to vote for independence and said no 😮.Theres a lot of people in Scotland who are more British than the English...William Wallace would turn in his grave.
No he wouldn't, he wasn't a rebel, he was a Scottish Royalist and would respect people's loyalty to the crown.
He can't turn in his grave , he has no limbs
As a scot i agree . 🏴🇬🇧
He has no grave, his body was dissected and parts sent around the country.
Why would he.???
Have you got the parochial gene.!!????
36:00 name of that background music please ?
I'm a very British Scot and proud of it. I need no Frenchman or any other nationality to tell me what is best, as for English people making racist comments about Scots, well I served in the British army and again proud to have done so for my queen and country, unless you have done so, I suggest you look at the sacrifices made by Scots in service. A quarter of a million in two world wars from Glasgow alone. Show some respect.
👍🇬🇧👏👏
Well said sir thank you for your service 🇬🇧
Well said, but when Scots constantly make racist comments about the English it's apparently okay...
Well I served in the army as well, but I believe in independence.
@@johnfitzpatrick4007 you are entitled to do so but please don't let ancient history influence your decision. As it stands Scotland has little to no infrastructure to go down that route and certainly cannot carry on the way things are. The snp have had 14 years to do something constructive and failed miserably and that isn't the fault of Westminster.,however, I fully respect your right to do as you please with your vote.
Come on? Why would we ever really be arsed about advancing into such an irrelevant wasteland further north at the risk of losing parts of our army. It had no relevant importance as a naval base or anything else for that matter at the time, stuck out as it is in the far northern waters. We simply waited until it became more Important to us English before we made our move
You didn't do William Wallace any justice in this .
He lead the rebellions single handedly for years and had the English armys terrified . He also invaded England and sacked York.
He paved the way for Bruce and died a hero freedom fighter .
Free Scotland
We are free ya muppet
GTFO with your nonsense
Free Scotland from traitors to their Scottish ancestral Monarchs.
Free from what ?. Get out more and see the world.
Mix with different cultures and visit different countries and learn to open your mind instead of festering at home watching braveheart all day.
Is the playback volume low..?
The map shows Orkney to be Scottish in 1296 but it still Norwegian then.
Scotland needs its own monarch! Separate from the U.K. The English are so different from Scots, especially us Highlander’s.
We dont need a monarch waste of money
In the end, they just outspent us and bought the place
King of Scots, not Scotland.
The English conquered enough of Scotland to pacify the population and be sure of the northern border while they took care of business with their main foes on the continent. The English were far too sympathetic to the conquered Scots, they should have been far more ruthless.
30:50 "riding half dressed and bareback on his own horse" does not translate well into modern Scottish, haha
Long story short King James 6th of Scotland took over England in 1603 under the House of Stuart, Charles the 3rd King of the UK is descended from the House of Stuart.
He took over nothing. He committed treason by subsuming the interests of Scotland into those of our enemy.
@@thomasmoore5949He didn't do that though
Edward the 2nd not get killed by his own nobleman ?
england really 2v1 france and scotland 🤣🤣🤣
You are aware that England has always dwarfed Scotland in terms of population . Same with Wales & Ireland. Maybe if the Celtic nations banded together back then to take out the English once & for all & sent them back to Europe where they came from.
@@janice506
Maybe the Scots should do the same and go back to Ireland.
The Scottish king Bruce was a norman. It is like if the anglo Irish had broken from England and set up their own monarchy. The Scottish people got played.
Bruce was born in Scotland and his mother was Scottish, his father was born in England, his grandfather was from Normandy!!!
The English wonder why everyone hates them eh 😂
I don't hate them
Jealousy? Doesn't take rocket science mate
If you think everyone loves the Scots, newsflash, they dont
Well, we don't. It isn't worth wondering about. And they don't hate us either.
Long Live the United Kingdom of Britain and Ireland! You are proud to be English speaker. Welcome to the global language
