I am a fan of Batman 500 wish it was more influential especially after dark nights metal. I got a copy on comixology it’s probably still available for kindle. Hope you review one of these days. A world where all three Waynes live and there’s still a Batman how novel.
*Crashes though a window “Hello sir would you like to hear about our LORD and saviour Jesus Christ?” *dramatically stands up “Yes father, I shall become a priest…” “Well that was quick.”
*Batman:* “Blast! These Inquisitors are giving me more trouble than we expected! That’s your cue, Robin!” *Batmobile hatch opens, Robin blasts out* *Robin lands next to Batman* *Batman picks up Robin, uses him to deflect bullets* *Batman chucks Robin at Inquisitors, knocking them all out* *Batman picks Robin back up, puts him in the Batmobile* “Impeccable work as always, old chum!” *valiantly drives off into the night*
Robin: "Batman you're just high on mushrooms! Those aren't Inquisitors! They're child protection agents! I'm not Robin! I'm just some random orphan!" Batman: "Ha ha ha. Well said old chum!"
I always find it so relatable when Sal talks about those books you look up to as a child solely because the cover is so cool. You grow up and finally get to red them and they never live up to how good you thought they would be. I have a lot of memories of something similar to that with Video Games.
"PRAISE THE GODDAMN LORD" *POW* Batman knocks you tf out and then blesses your unconscious body "Repent for your sins or i will break you" I remember you guys talking about doing Holy Terror many years ago. A ways fun to finally see it come to fruition
I like how in your most recent GBU, Tiffany had a real problem with one of the books dealing with its subject matter in a way where it brushed it aside, and then two days later you do a book that does the complete opposite.
I remember getting an Alan Brennert Batman collection from my local library. I thought he was great with character interactions that were really emotional. His issues with earth - 2 Batman and Black Canary were great examples of this in my opinion.
One of? As garbage as some of Frank’s stuff has been, holy terror is definitely the worst. It has no redeeming qualities, even the art is pretty garbage
"Omg he said BAT, imma hit that thumbs up and subscribe AND always have notifs on" if that's you, you're missing out on ALOT of excellent content. FIX THAT !!
It's crazy that this is a 1hour episode for a prestige book but wow I really want a copy of this now! How can this create such a world and an interesting take on Batman's origins and be so short in comparison. Thanks Sal for bringing this to my attention and for an incredible episode
Norm Breyfogle really is a great Batman artist. I wish I picked up those recent Dark Knight Detective and Caped Crusader collections. Just all around great work.
"Terror" really is just as apt as "Holy" here. As I listen to this, with its inquisition themes, I keep forgetting it takes place in modern day with contemporary technology.
Having just rewatched Linkara's review is the other Holy Terror yesterday, this was refreshing. I'll be shocked if that book makes it to the couch here.
Oh, man. This is one of those Elseworlds stories that I wish had a sequel. It’s fine as a one and done, but I really like the sci-fi religious angle of this world and I’d love to see more of this Batman. It’s neat. Nice to see you guys talk about it.
I just read this story today, and while I wish it was longer (graphic novels should be more than 50 pages), I like the unique worldbuilding of an America ruled by Puritan oligarchs. Sure there might be a little too much exposition and nothing gets resolved except for the death of a mad scientist, but it's still a fascinating read.
I personally am interested in seeing this universe with our 30 years of irl progress applied, what Signal would be like for this gotham, what Jason's red hood would be like
this elseworld story is great! also, "Batman: The Blue, The grey, and the bat" back issues needs to happen, cause batman protects lincoln?! SOLD! so let's get this video up to probably 2.5k or 3k likes, POPulation! also, congrats on now writing monthly columns for CBR (Comic Book Resources), Sal! :)
Always enjoy a good Batman episode, but in my opinion the best episodes of the show are the ones where Sal or Tiffany bring a book that I haven't and may never have read otherwise and either make me into a fan, or make me sure that I never need to purchase that book but entertain me along the way. Great episode! This book got to be both of Batman episode and a book I may never have picked up on my own, now I may just have to change that. That said, I'll be here no matter what book you pick.
How I'd do a "Holy Terror Batman" sequel: (spoilers for this episode/book below) plot hook: It's been nearly two decades since that night Bruce found the green man's body and the secret of the church. In that time he's founded a secret order to fight the world wide corruption of the church. Only real issue is he's getting old and while the church's grip has waned its more dangerous and extreme in its methods with a new scientist who leads the renewed efforts into metahuman experiments. Everything is brought to ahead when reports of a craft from the heavens crash lands in metropolis and a young angel is said to have flown out. Now is a race against time and Metropolis' chief inquisitior, Alexander Luthor, and his guild to find this Angel. I'd need about 8 issues or a 160 pages graphic novel Batman's allies would be: - The "Cardinals" of gotham, Bruce's protégés who operate/operated in Gotham- Richard Grayson, infiltrated the inquisition's deeper elements and covers Bludhaven as the Nightwing behind his fellow inquisitiors back in order to complete the mission of weeding out corruption. Jason Todd, who strayed from the path and killed and now wears a red hood to mark himself a sinner as well as to not bring shame to Bruce's name and mission. Tim Drake, the smartest of the group, outed from the church proper after being discovered to be in a relationship with another man (to tie in recent revelations of Tim's sexual identity), uses the call sign of Robin and is their tech wizard. Duke Thomas, a bright young man who has become a signal of hope for the future of gotham's churches as well as an inquisitior working for Bruce on the sly. - The City, people in the city who help Bruce and his Cardinals: Selena Kyle, a worldly woman who is Bruce's ear to the ground, it's clear she cares for Bruce in romantic sense and is his greatest weakness, though he tries to hide it. Barbara Gordon, the new head inquisitior for gotham, inspired by her father and batman's example to become a new kind of reformer in the inquisition though it's painted a target on her back, knows Duke is tied to Batman but doesn't press the issue (some what replacing the normal Bruce and Gordon dynamic). John C, a traveling blonde British man in a brown coat who has been tied to the occult happenings in the city but never gives Bruce and his allies a straight answer. - The League, a group of heroes who Bruce works with to bring down the church's influence or reform it though they all operate independently enough to ensure all of them won't fall if one is captured. These would include: -Wally West a young red haired man who is "quick as a flash" and uses a red costume to emulate a devil and watches over central city & keystone city. He was discovered Barry's notes for his original experiment after helping his aunt iris move. A "witch" named Jessica Cruz who wields a green light as an extension of herself who fights beast from the stars and is a volunteer worker and poltical activist in coast city . Roy Harper a quick shot who use to have an addiction before finding faith, protects star city after its all but abandoned by the church following a no man's land type of catastrophe. Kaldur'ahm a protector of what remains of Atlantis, distrust the surface world besides Bruce after he returned the remains of Arthur, Laurie and their childern. And by the end Kara, a young woman sent to protect her cousin but after finding he's long dead, buries him in accordance to Rao and assist the league to bring down the church as a symbol of a new path that can't be corrupted or bent by their will. the antagonist Bruce would face : - Owls, a twisted religious Doomsday cult who believe the world should burn. Lincoln March is their leader and its the in media res when we pick up with Bruce and his cardinals in the first issues. - Alexander Luthor, a pragmatic, cold and calculating inquisitior who knows the church is corrupt but is using the corruption to, at least in his opinion, steer the world in the right direction. Is revealed to be the new head scientist who has replicated parts of the meta human gene. - The Guild, a group of metahumans and non humans, who either are brainwashed, tricked or truly believe in Luthor's views of the world. they'd include: Jason Blood, having spent so long with the demon inside him has caused a mental shift towards controlling the corruption in himself and the church for his own means. Cyrus Gold, an intellectual business man who after nearly dying will ask Luthor to keep him alive, knowing he has sins he's not repented for but when he wakes up, he's now the monster who only can remember and recite the words of his favorite nursery rhyme. Leslie Willis, a firebrandt shock jock for the church who believer she was cursed with her abilities after an accident but lex has convinced her they were given to her by God to punish the wicked. William Watt, a young man who after an accident is left without his father or much else, Lex takes him in upon discovering the boy has telekinesis and has shaped him to be not only a weapon but loyal potentially to a fault. Lisa Snart, a career criminal who turned over a new leaf after the death of her brother and their crew during a heist gone bad in Central city, that she saw the red Devil (wally) at, she believes he's responsible and lex helps her get a new Power to help her kill this "evil". I'd would definitely touch on some of the elements of what people do in organized structures when they believe they have power. but I'd end with a hopeful note that "this was the turning point and while it's not always going to be great, it is going to get better." wiht it clear the world is turning towards a less authoritative nature. Though seeing the tone of this I'd probably end with a stinger of sorts where extremist leave a bomb full of experimental tech stolen from Lex's stash being used on a youth center in South Dakota. showing that both the story has more going on, with it setting up the window for a " static : holy terror" and that there are those extremist out there who'd target kids. thanks for reading, what do you think?
Is it possible for you to one day do a back issues on JSA: ghost stories which are issues 82-87 of JSA by Paul Levitz from 2007? I want to see you guys discuss this story since the gentleman ghost is one of my favorite underrated DC villains.
Anyone else ever have what i call a back issues moment? You're listening to the gents banter on the couch Sal working through a story and for a bit it sounds new, and about half way through you realise not only do you know this one you own the book its just you haven't read it in like 20 years so you go find it and read it again. That happens a good bit for me especially with Batman 90's stories. Anyway moving on.
I don't think Kal's dead. I think he's in his "healing coma". All Batman has to do is take him down, and bring outside, and let the sun touch him. I feel like this world should be in the Dark Multiverse. Everything about it just screams wrong, depressing, fanaticism and death.

I think the hypocrisy of the inquisitor is pointed out in the story but the parallels between that and holy terror are interesting especially with the Superman Christ comparison.
Hell yes! I found this at a used comic store for $2 and read it about the same time as I played the video game _Blasphemous._ That was a great combination! (Tiffany, if yor looking for video games to play for the stream, _Blasphemous_ is a great choice!)
Another great video guys It was really dark that was really heavy but it was also amazing and awesome elseworld! But when will you do the Beta Ray Bill 2021 comic series thank you for your time and I hope this finds you well! P.S. thank you back issues for showing me this great story! I went to my local comic book store that has all old comic books! And I found Batman holy terror in the first print also found Superman speeding bullet and The blue the gray and the bat I got super lucky! Thank you guys from the bottom my heart show me these awesome comics!
I never expected to find a Batman story where I relate so much to him but as a queer pastor-in-training I'm absolutely in the same space with taking my ordination to fight the Church This reminds me a lot of Image's comic series Loaded Bible: Blood of my Blood from last year
I like this type of Elseworlds story, where you just shift the world laterally by one variable, such as the world being dominated by a theocratic system... until you get to that hallway with the prisoners. Then things go bonkers. Which I guess is okay still, but man what a tonal change.
You can buy this and more fun Batman Elseworlds stories right now! amzn.to/3JUIuqN

So if Batman is a priest lets hope he dosen't touch the altar boys
I’m surprised no one brought up the joke of a priest busting through Bruce’s window and him saying “Yes father, I shall be a priest.”

“Hello sir would you like to hear about our LORD and saviour Jesus Christ?”

Closest thing to that is an issue of Milk Wars.
Tempest Fuginaut is absolutely Comicpop's mascot. Always searching for his dark hero, and never finding anyone.... perfect.

That's how Frank Miller's Holy Terror got it's name. It was called "Holy Terror Batman!"
I saw Holy Terror in the title and got really scared for a second
One of your funniest episodes ever. Special mention to Ben for cracking me up the whole video!!
I remember getting an Alan Brennert Batman collection from my local library. I thought he was great with character interactions that were really emotional. His issues with earth - 2 Batman and Black Canary were great examples of this in my opinion.
Love the idea of Batman getting his army of Robins and waging war against the church.
Batman Holy Terror: The Children's Crusade
1:01:00 The Samaritan & Altar Boy from Astro City have entered the chat.

V for Batman. There's something about this that really jibes well with Batman, I'm not sure why. And the art is fantastic.
Wouldn’t that be Vatman?
Boy, these old Elseworld stories that really had a concept behind them prove just how versatile an idea Batman is. This was such a cool book!
I'm one of the eight Nightwing fans.😟 You know Nightwing has a year one story too...just saying year one could be its own little back issue series.
Was hoping for one of Frank Miller's worst stories but ended up with a pretty good elseworld instead
One of? As garbage as some of Frank’s stuff has been, holy terror is definitely the worst. It has no redeeming qualities, even the art is pretty garbage
Exactly. He got me so nervous on Twitter
always look for the ,
this is "Holy Terror: Batman" , the frank Miller one is "Holy Terror, Batman" like Burt ward Robin is saying it

Zatanna's evil nun counterpart feels like she should be a mainstream villain. She'd be a great villain for all the magical heroes.
When I head The Green Man I thought it might be A. Martian Manhunter , B. Swamp Thing , C. The Spectre .
"We might do Holly Terror somday maybe" is soooo different than your prior "We will NOT EVER do that book!"

Ah! So it was this Holy Terror you were talking about on Twitter. Thought it the Frank Miller's Holy Terror.
We all know Batman's true religion is justice
That bat mobile looked sick as hell
An immediate search on eBay for me
Loved it!
I always thought both holy terror's we're the same
I’m here to ask for the grey and the blue recap I love Elseworlds and what ifs keep them coming
I'm on the fence with this story, it's a cool story and I want to know what happens next but I like how what happens next is uncertain
“No way!”
Sees title.
“Yeah figured”
I just bought Batman The Blue and The Grey!
I think 4:36 could be thawn since he keeps coming back after dying
56:53..... Riddler?!?
I never expected to find a Batman story where I relate so much to him but as a queer pastor-in-training I'm absolutely in the same space with taking my ordination to fight the Church
This reminds me a lot of Image's comic series Loaded Bible: Blood of my Blood from last year
I like this type of Elseworlds story, where you just shift the world laterally by one variable, such as the world being dominated by a theocratic system... until you get to that hallway with the prisoners. Then things go bonkers. Which I guess is okay still, but man what a tonal change.
I kinda want to see them expand the world a bit but to be fair thats something alot of the good elseworlds could have
