- After the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins on the RUST film set, many were surprised to hear that real guns are still used in movies. In an age of CGI dragons and superheroes, that’s understandable. In this video I explain the reasons why many productions still use actual weapons. Additionally, I offer a brief overview of the different types of firearms used in movies.

Were do I get a blank gun from in Georgia
Mail order form Western Stage Props. Or Blank Guns Armory.
Interesting. I've spent a good portion of my life doing WWII reenacting. And there some short films I want to make. We've always used real guns with blank rounds. One of the cheesey things I laugh at in films is the muzzle flash added by CGI. I've RARELY been fooled. Especially with the lack of recoil or a vapor coming from the gun. Even automatic weapons create enough smoke when used which hardly see in films. A lot of people don't understand the gun laws in their state. I'm not claiming I know everything either. One example is that you can own a fully automatic weapon but it's very expensive and it depends where you live. Federal government recognizes that you can own a fully automatic machine gun but state laws may vary. I live in Oregon which is a Class 3 state. Which allows a me to own one. Where as my neighbor state of Washington does not. They are Class 2. Which means semiauto and bolt action. Anyways it can get complicated. And of course safety is crucial. Even using blanks doesn't mean it's ok to act like its a toy. You can still inflict harm on someone.
Agreed, digital is a poor substitute for blanks. As long as they are used responsibly, I think it's the way to go. That said, Air Soft is not a bad way to go in situations where blanks aren't an option.
@RobertConwaymovieguy Agreed, I have seen airsoft stuff look better and better. I think it depends on what level you're on. Low budget, indie, "high" budget. It's always hard for the director to tell if his or her film is good. You can be told certain things but are they telling the truth or not. Just saying, blanks makes your film look better and more importantly, taken seriously. Unless you're doing like a Evil Dead style movie, no one will care. But if you're doing a drama, everything can matter.
