I just started raising fruit flies for my Urosaurus ornatus (Rex & Pixie, my AZ ornate tree lizards)... I haven't had great success raising the flies but thanks to the tips you've supplied here, I feel a lot better on what to keep doing right... awesome as always Rus...
Nice tutorial. I've been wondering how to culture these without the rotten fruit smell. Fruit flies are a great food for top water feeding fish. Bettas especially. They see the movement and strike like a tiny arowana.
"the devil's lettuce" 😂 I promise it's safe to smoke around fruit flies. Also, I pour mine off into a tupperware every couple days and freeze them to keep the cultures low(not many mouths to feed that size), then I have thousands of frozen flies that can be fed later to the smallest slings, like wolf slings and they don't get all over the place.
How many flies would you give two baby mourning geckos? How often? I haven't had mine but a week so far and I've been feeding fruit flies off and on and giving the crested gecko diet as well.
If they are very young, is migjtnoffer half a dozen melanogaster flies at a feeding, and the. If they show signs of still being hungry, a few more. They’ll do well on nothing but the crested gecko diet of course, but offering flies provides good variety. You can offer the flies 2-3 times a week.
@@Aquarimax Thank you so much. That's how many I've been giving. I watched one eat 4 by herself yesterday evening so I wondered if I was offering enough. One is very shy and the other very bold. I haven't 'noticed' either touch the diet though, however it is less each time but I didn't know if that's due to evaporation etc, but I change it and make sure it's available at all times. Thanks again. I really appreciate it. :)
I am very new to needing to culture fruit flies and this info is helpful, however I wonder if you have any notable measurements of the supplies used, so I don't mess it up.
They might was it a ready to feed culture, or just larvae? It it included adults, Give them a few hours at room temperature. If it is just larvae, give it a few days before you throw it away. I
A culture of mine is doing something I wasn't expecting. The flies seem lethargic. I am feeding them to praying mantids and a surprising number of mantids are dying. Could the 2 problems be related?
@@Aquarimax By now, my theory is that the mantids need more heat. I don't think they're molting often enough. Are you familiar with Mediterranean Mantids? I'm surprised at how little information I have found about them. They grow naturally in the desert. I've been told that they don't need water because they get all they need from their food. I'm raising them from birth and I have kept them inside. I'm wondering if they not just have survived 120 degree heat but need more heat to function well and maybe I should keep them outside.
@@Aquarimax Now, my fruit flies are dying. I have 5 Melanogaster and 2 Hydei cultures and they've all crashed. I keep them close to each other. Could the same thing be killing them all? I don't see any mites. I used Repashy. Could I have done something wrong with that? I keep them at room temperature, which is 81 degrees. Is that too hot? Could air freshener kill them?
Incredibly informative! Thanks for all the great answers and keep up the good work!
Thank you!!

Thanks for the great info.
Glad you found it helpful!
@@Aquarimax it did thanks 👍
frogs and chameleons, if kept. How many servings should be given? one day given 3 glasses of fruit flies?

Scary! Glad she is ok.
Thank you Wally! Definitely out of the worst of it 👍🏽
@@Aquarimax Fantastic. So scary. Not something to be taken lightly at all!
Missed again 🥺 Catching up now
Would adding fruit prolong the life of the culture?
What was the first item you added to the media?
The white stuff? Methylparaben?
My fruit fly culture was delivered (2day) I think it got 2 cold will they come back alive

Do you buy fruit fly once a month then?
No, i just transfer about 50 flies from a producing culture to seed the new ones. 👍
I hope she is alright now

Possibly. Any environmental changes?

What do people mean when they say they are starting a culture exactly
Basically adding fresh medium to a new container and seeding it with new flies to get them breeding.
Mine keep dying :(
Can't wait to see your tips
I hope they are helpful!
Hey there. I had what looked like black rice that grew in my culture. I feel like it's something that might have been in my oatmeal. 🤮
Sounds like it could be some sort of fungus…
Too much talking

hi, can they also be raised with just spirulina and water? does it smell bad?
I have never tried raising fruit flies with just spirulina and water.
