It's amazing how many different guitar parts are written and played in this song (and most Metallica songs) that you don't hear until you listen to it like this. :D
I have played classical guitar for over 40 years…big EVH fan…the guitar on this song is just extremely impressive and a treat whether you like Metallica or not
This song is a beautiful classic. On my channel we did a cover with my band "Mundo Esquivo", it would be helpful if you listened to it, thank you! ua-cam.com/video/zfMq10qxlY0/v-deo.html
Two tracks here are blended, both electric guitars: one is recorded with amp/cabinet/mike (this acoustic-like sound) and the second one is guitar plugged directly to the recording/mixing device (mixing table?) and equalized/amplified with this device only, without amp/cab/mike, what probably gives this beautiful metallic ringing tone.. This is genius :)
the part at 1:46 goes first finger on the 3rd string, fifth fret, third finger on the 2nd string, 7th fret, then slide both finger up (so first finger is on 7th fret 3rd string, and 3rd fringer is on 9th fret of the 2nd string). the back down to the original positions (5 on rd, 7th on 2nd) and finally pull both off down to 2nd fret with first finger on the 3rd string, and 3rd fret, third finger, on 2nd string. try it and let me know. you have to kinda slide up and slide down, then pull off and on to the 2/3 positions to finish.
My proudest accomplishments as a guitar student is figuring out the verse on my own (and also the clean part of To Live is to Die). The tabs i was looking at sounded wrong so i noodled arround and (eventually) nailed it.
This is recorded this way: One track is an electric guitar plugged to the amp with cabinet and recorded with microphone, and then the second track (exactly the same as the first one) is an electric guitar plugged directly to the recording/mixing device and it's sound is equalized by this device (mixing table) without amp and cabinet. I'm not sure if it's one guitar with splitted signal (one mike, one direct), but it sounds like it was two guitars. Ofcourse I'm talking about verse guitar sound.
I wish there were more information about the clean guitar tones on the Black Album. They're every bit as wonderful as the heavy guitars, bass, drums, vocals. I'd understood they were using a Roland Jazz Chorus, but it doesn't sound to me like there is chorus in the varying/modulating sense, but maybe some fixed time delays that accentuate some frequencies? Perhaps the delay effect is due to the slight delay of the miked channel. Neck pickup, I've always thought. And of course new strings!

+Bin Hashin im learning it right now and im plying guitar for about 1 year, its a little bit hard, but when you keep practicing you will do it :) good luck
Well, they meaning the three of them. Kirk actually doesn't have a role in this song accept on stage. James plays both guitar parts and put them together
@@mattjns it's not cut and paste. There are several guitar tracks if you listen carefully. Sometimes the clean electric guitar stays audible, and the 12 string was probably bounced in some other guitar hero track, but in the full song is audible. It's not about not being able to play, James probably played full takes,
This is definitely the original recording but I'm going to be honest it's nothing compared to the acoustic along with a piano and a violin instrumental (No drums) I would really love to hear that
Aychess without knowing anything at all about guitar, not even that it wasn't in tune, I learned the intro. Turned it and almost came. Learned the rest of the song in a couple days total and learned most everything I know off of this song alone.
Wyatt Del Grosso two guitars both played by James Hetfield. I'm not kidding btw. He recorded both parts and put them together. I didn't mean as in he had four hands
Kirk Hammett fell of his chair when James goes, "dibs on solo!"
The solo wouldn't be the same with kirk playing it
Jeff Goodman You ain’t get it, dude.
@@carlosguillen8459 i dont get it, what happened?
@@homosexualchristianity600 your mom
James should solo more often
I appreciate this song more than ever for the isolated guitar rythm and tone. I could listen to this over and over.
I think it is one of the most beautifully written songs ever recorded.
I recommend checking out Nothing Else Matters from James' riff tapes, such a beautiful piece as well.
This imo is the most beautiful guitar arraignment ever created. It stands alone but with drums and vocals is perfection.
1:01, possibly my favorite non-heavy not-so-riffy guitar part Metallica’s ever done
Not even limited to Metallica, I think this is one of the very best riffs/doodles that have ever been written.
It's so beautiful
1:46 goddamn that little lick is so good!
TheGrimReaper54321 *riff*
No, it's actually a lick

An acoustic guitar has been blended with an electric,I believe
This is a twelve - string electric guitar
Wrong
james used different guitars
Single coil Guitar with slight chorus for the intro.
He uses a gibson sg double neck and gretsch ehite falcon for the strumming parts
I have played classical guitar for over 40 years…big EVH fan…the guitar on this song is just extremely impressive and a treat whether you like Metallica or not
yes this solo is so beautiful, all James solos are incredible
4:55 solo is what I love the most about this song
What an unforgettable tune.
To 6 people, something else mattered :-(
rofl
Lol
The crashing sound at around 4:55 was Kirk falling out of his chair when James called dibs on the solo😂
your funny
Wasnt that joke posted earlier in the comments? Like literally scroll down a bit youll find it
Id actually love is that was legit
Gotta get those likes lol. Posted by some other dude a month before you: 'Kirk Hammett fell of his chair when James goes, "dibs on solo!"'
Niels Liljedahl Christensen exactly, i copied the same comment and im not ashamed
this is so.. beautiful..

the best tune ever,no one will ever make a song like this one in a million years, bad ass guitar tone

the ending solo so fucking amazing 4:55

Its using a chorus pedal, that probably highlights the tone
What a gorgeous masterpiece

Agreed. To Live Is To Die is one of my favorites but the beautiful guitar rhythm during the verse i didn't discover until i learned to play the song

The guitars of mettalica will never be paralleled!
1:46 is fairly easy for beginner's for those of you that want to learn.
The Mighty Scoot how can i learn it? Can you give me a video with tutorial or a website with tabs atleast?
1:46 i started crying right there
I am trying to learn to play this on acoustic guitar, and this video his helping a lot.
4:57 is the solo
I want to learn this song on guitar so bad....I'm new to playing guitar...:(

Thank you for this upload i am learning the song with this video
Jesus it’s amazing to hear the edits. We all slaved over this trying to learn the guitar parts perfectly. Turns out they couldn’t play it either!

there is acoustic, electric, and chorus has 12 string blended, probably like 10 different guitar tracks if not more, this is only 1 channel
The chorus has God knows how many guitars tracked
It's a shame that the drums are so fucking loud that you can hardly hear the guitars in the finished song
So many people mishear the solo so bad ,glad its finally in a stand alone.
I can only play until 1:05
dont worry!what about me?what i can say...i can play less than you! one thing i now for guitar...NEVER GIVE UP! i love this shit!
Michael van Nijnatten your comment is from a year ago, surely you can play the whole song by now :)
Michael van Nijnatten nub
That's 1:05 more than me.
Love this song just recently finished learn just about all of it. And have learned how to play it more like they do live
Thanks for this... i'm trying to learn the solo, but the rhythm section is too loud lol.

KIRK HAMMET!!!! THE BEST!!!!❤🙏
He had nothing to do with this song though
Yeah, unfortunately he doesn’t play on this recording at all. It’s all James.

Its another part James added in, but in live performances its what Kirk plays

there's one for the must part, but there's two guitars... the reason it sounds like two is because they use fingerpicking...
This is definitely the original recording but I'm going to be honest it's nothing compared to the acoustic along with a piano and a violin instrumental (No drums) I would really love to hear that
James Hetfield on his own!!

I am fucking desperately trying to learn this masterpiece but its friggin difficult

Which part are you trying to learn?

Hey guys are the chorus chords C, Am and D? Or C A D
Thanks man, I thought I was crazy for hearing like an A major chord here lol I was trying to learn the song by ear
This ratstrat I have sounds like this, with the chorusing last strings.
This is nice guitar playing.
I found it in Kingston.

It's more like eight in some places.
Good Good
Fucking masterpiece
This doesn't seem to capture the many layered guitar tracks. It only plays one guitar track at a time throughout the majority of the song.
estas son las pistas originales? como las conseguiste???
guitar hero
in the video you seem him playing an electric, so yeah, it's not acoustic.
is this two guitars or one
Wyatt Del Grosso One
Wyatt Del Grosso Two guitars, you can't hear it?
Wyatt Del Grosso two guitars both played by James Hetfield. I'm not kidding btw. He recorded both parts and put them together. I didn't mean as in he had four hands
Way more than two guitars
Wyatt Del Grosso One guitar, multiple parts.
I really dont want to see that name while listening to this...
Yeah, you can see it isnt by looking at theyr Live performences
I hate people commenting about Justin Bieber on Metallica videos.
why did u say that?
why would you do something like that? it should be completely listened from start to finish!
I did a intro cover to this not as good obviously and its the only vid on my channel if you wanna watch it
