      Chris Blackburn probably because without the drums doing the beat in the back it feels empty. without cliff it’s not exactly empty, just feels like it’s missing something, like a little extra punch or something

      Sadly, but for RTL and the black album, what I did (and it sounds pretty close to me on my Line 6), is for RTL, I used his settings from MOP and instead of the mids being at around 1, I upped them to around 2.5-3.5 and kept the treble and bass the same and for the black album I used the Justice settings and upped the mids to around 3-4.5 to give it that huge beefy tone and it sounds pretty close to me. Let me know if this helps.

      I always loved the guitars here. Actually the bass guitar isn't that loud on Master Of Puppets as well as it isn't on Ride The Lightning. Metallica was always based on guitars and drums, of course the bass guitar was important in band as everywhere, but let's be real. I don't get that Cliff missing and living it in that amount. No offense though.

    The EX didn't exist back in 86, unless you mean EXP? Take a look at any photo of James throughout the Puppets tour and what guitar do you see? His trusty white Gibson Explorer. The EX came after the EXP when ESP got a lawsuit for the Explorer design and I think that was about mid 90's. As far as I know James didn't use ESP's until the recording of the Justice album and that's also when he switched to EMG pickups. This is common knowledge on most Metallica gear sites.

    We can't be sure whether Hetfield and Hammett used their EMG 81/60s on this album or Hetfield used a Seymour Duncan Invader SH-8 and Hammett used a Seymour Duncan Distortion SH-6 on the bridges of their guitars like they did on their older albums
    They did however use Mesa Boogie Amps and Marshall cabs. Their cabs probably had Celetestion speakers like the G12T-75 in them to get them that scooped mids tone.
    I've heard that Hetfield used a Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ on this, not sure about Hammett though.

    • @TheTorri98
      @TheTorri98 10 років тому +2

      For rhythms, Hetfield used EMG 60/81's and a Mesa/Boogie Mk. IIC+ preamp modded into a Marshall Plexi poweramp, out a Marshall cab. And tons of EQ everywhere in the chain.

    • @deanml116
      @deanml116 10 років тому +6

      James and Kirk both used what came standard in their guitars at the time. In James's '84 Explorer was likely the Gibson 496 and 500 combo or the Dirty Fingers. Kirk started using EMGs some time in '87 and James noticed a difference in Kirk's tone and so he started using EMGs as well. That was when his Gibson Explorer gained the 81/60 combo with which he continued to play up until his first ESP the EET FUK guitar in '89. As far as tone goes that all really just comes from the Mesas they used. One can't really say that the stock passive pickups can be attributed to the better guitar tones on RTL and MoP than the tones in AJFA and the Black Album. Likewise no one can say that the EMGs were worse. In my experience it's all about what you plug your guitar through. Some rigs can make $300 guitars sound like $3000 guitars.

    You're right that they used a modded Plexi but Tube Screamer was the OD pedal and also some Boss distortion. But I think a JCM800 could do the job and they're easier to find.
    Though I don't like copying other guys' tone, I want to make my own sounds. And you will never get the same tone that they had in studio because studio records are always produced, unless you use exactly the same recoding equipment and methods. (They might for example double the guitars and it will sound different.)

    Most songs (even Metallica) you can throw the bass in as a rhythm part but Orion is three parts of harmony and one part rhythm. This need the bass back in it.
