Good question. I usually paunch (gut) them at the end of the session and skin them at home where I'm properly set up to do it quickly and cleanly. Thanks for watching. Mat
I recently heard about the idea of rifle scope magnification for various yard ranges. What do you think about this? Do you use a fixed (3x, 4x, etc)? Or, do you use variable power scope (3-9x, 4-12x, etc)? Speaking only of non-electric (NV, Thermal, etc) glass optics - What is the best magnification for various disciplines? Pigeons/rats/mice inside 25 yards Small game at 25-50 yards Ground squirrels, rock chuck, etc about 50-75 yards Coyote, pig, etc. approximately 75-100 yards Deer out to 150 yards (Keeping in mind that we're using air rifles with sufficient power for a clean kill)
I tend not to use air rifles beyond about 60 yards - or 40 yards with sub-12ft/lb - and only shoot small pests. For that, a decent scope with a zoom range of 4-16x is adequate. I use have mine set on 10x most of the time. Thanks for watching. Mat
I like the fact you are conscientious when it comes to dispatching these pests. I watched a rating video from an American guy. It was absolutely disgusting, I don’t think I saw one clean kill. I’m pretty certain you won’t dispatch a rat by shooting it in the arse. I think that is just very cruel, unlike your superb shooting, which is very humane. 👍
Thanks for noticing. I won't take shots for the sake of taking shots when it comes to live quarry. If I don't expect a clean kill, I won't pull the trigger. All the best. Mat
1. They are an invasive species that carry a disease that kills indigenous red squirrels. 2. They predate on songbirds eggs and songbird chicks. 3. They are able to eat nuts/berries/fruit before it is ripe, thereby denying it to other indigenous woodland species that rely on the same food but can only eat it when it is ripe - dormice and fieldmice that time coming out of hibernation to feed on food when it is ripe only to find it has been eaten by grey squirrels. Responsible airgunners shoot for a reason and not simply to kill things. Does that help?
This is a rabbit shooting video, not squirrel. The rabbits are being controlled because their burrows can cause horses and ponies to break their legs. Grey squirrels are a destructive introduced species which has pushed our native red squirrel to the verge of extinction. They ruin woodland habitat by killing and damaging trees by stripping bark, they take eggs and chicks from songbirds' nests and dominate natural food sources, leaving native wildlife susceptible to starvation during winter. All in all, they are very bad news for British wildlife.
Always a pleasure Mat, cheers for sharing you're outing.
Thanks for watching.

Great video, as usual. The Ixia doesn’t look ambidextrous with the knob and magazine poking out like that.
Thanks Gary. Fair point - though the stock is ambi.

Love the videos as always. Do you field dress those rabbits straight away?

Why squirrel? I love those animals
