you can get GMRS mobile radios too. 50w with a 10 year licence soon to be only $35. then you can use repeaters and talk anywhere in the US if you have internet or our local repeater covers 60 miles.
this was a great video, I have been trying to figure out a place to install one on my jeep for several years ( believe that or not ) and all the places that I have looked at just was in the way or inconvinite to reach, I have been using my unidan moving from one place to another so mow your idea sold me on another radio so I will ne ordering what you have and mount mine the same way. I will use the one I now have as a base. I don't want to put holes in my Rubicon.
Thanks! I actually have videos all each of those things you're interested in check my channel for the videos - maximus 3 stinger bar, JW speaker lights, warn Evo winch, Cascadia flipster license plate bracket. All great stuff 👍
Any updates on how its working now .any update video would be appreciated.and Midland just came out with a mxt 575 same design but for GMRS and you can use 50 watts.
Nice review. I was thinking about upgrading to this CB. If I do I’ll use your link. I love CB. Grew up with it. I also have a Midland GMRS hardwired into my 4runner. Best part is with GMRS the handhelds are fairly inexpensive and very good radios. While camping as a family we use handhelds with the 4Runner as the base. Plus if we go out with friends who don’t have coms we toss them one. Best and awesome rig!
Thanks so much, loving it so far! I did want to get a Midland gmrs mounted in the rig.. except you can't in Canada, very disappointing and silly. They only allow low powered gmrs here unfortunately or else I'd do the same!
OK, so you've had the unit for a while, what has the reception and distance been like on the radio or are you giving that up for the convenience of the unit not taking up space
the only problem i have with mine is the speaker sucks and if the volume is all the way up it will back feed into the mic on transmit. Ill be hooking up a external speaker.
Sorry I didn't film that part, there are guides on how to remove that section of the dashboard online. You can use wire taps to splice into the individual wires
How has this unit been holding up I'm looking into getting one myself but have started seeing a lot of bad reviews stating it gets stuck in transmit and overheats the unit. Have you had any problems
I did send it in for repairs for that very reason and has been great ever since. I have a feeling they had a bad batch go out early on. Been working as intended now
Is the microphone jack a standard cat 5 or 6 twisted pair, so I might be able to mount the unit behind the rear seat and run a twisted pair extension to the dashboard?
the ground cable is wrong lol. The bolt is positive or center of the cable , check you swr. PUT THAT GROUND CABLE AT THE MOUNTING BRAKET BOLTS.and you need ground the gate to the body
The 2 ft. Firestick although good quality, you would do better with 36" to 46". Antenna and mount even with the Roofline. Behind a car/truck body attenuates your signal and increases SWR.
First, don't expect great range with an antenna that small, second, make sure your SWR is nice and low, the lower your SWR, the more power is actually exiting the antenna. If you still can't get one, try going to a high area around you like a mountain top or something. A nice clear line of sight will help you in making contacts. Or just drive on a busy highway with lots of truckers.
I can tell you didn't check your work with an SWR meter because you shorted the hot side of your antenna to ground where you bolted that extra ground wire. Take the firering apart and look at what that bolt attaches to... The antenna and center conductor of the coax. Your going to have no performance with the antenna dead shorted like that and will probably end up damaging the radio. Good day
I would check the SWR with no extra ground lead at all. If you get good readings then there is no need to add extra stuff. If you can't get the antenna system to tune THEN start playing with grounds. It's always good practice to test the the antenna with an ohm meter before transmitting in to it. On the antenna connector that goes to the radio test between the center pin and the metal shield. Should be infinite. Then check between the center pin and body ground. Should be infinite. Then check between the metal shield and car body. Should be zero ohms if the mount is grounded good. But like I said above if the SWR is good then don't go chasing problems that don't exist. For extra test if you can make the meter leads reach check between the center pin on the antenna connector at the radio and the antenna it self at the chrome base spring. Should be zero ohms. CB's will talk to each other when your feet apart on the road even with a shorted antenna but it aint good. Would hate to see you burn up such a nice radio. Be well

From what I've researched, we do not have any high powered gmrs in cab radios in Canada. Only hand held frs... lame!

A characteristic problem of this type of radios is that do not memorize the on / off status when switch off/on the ignition. Does that radio do it?

The antenna is mounted on a horrible spot. And its not grounded on the top. It needs to be grounded on the bottom where the coaxial is.
So then where would be a more acceptable location to place the antenna?? Please enlighten us.
Scuff the paint off then put dielectric grease. Problem solved
