    This makes me think of the first time I ever ordered a bottle of wine at an upscale Italian restaurant. I was barely 21 and out on a first date.
    The waiter brings the wine out and shows the bottle, but poses with the wine for longer than seemed necessary to me. I look at him like he’s stupid.
    He pours a splash of wine in the glass and then stares at me like I’m supposed to do something. Again, I look at him like wtf , and thinking this guy is STAAAANGY, so I just say “ um, May I have some more please. “
    I didn’t know I was supposed to taste it before he served it.

    At London's best hotels the turn down team dress for the occasion, a different evening uniform from their daytime cleaning uniform. Four Season do silent housekeeping, where they are like ninjas, you never see them, but everything in your room is always spotless and re-stoked, they watch and wait for you to leave then they pounce and bring goodies and tidy things. A Four Seasons I once stayed at had poolside sunglasses cleaning service, and whenever you took a dip they pounce and straighten your towel, robe, flip-flops etc.. It's called 5 star service.

    Yes...I have heard of the "turn down service". It represents an airing out of your sheets before you retire/sleep for the evening LOL...Services like chocolate was included. Lots of extra goodies ie. alcoholic beverages, hair appliances, to say the least, "home away from home ", assuring your air is calming/accommodating enough in your room. My ancestors being Native American experienced this through indoctrination Olde Customs, Olde ways of thinking, LOL and Olde money. You didn't miss anything. Sincerely, 🌹 Dee

    Remember the 'Chilled Salad Fork'? Turn-down service is in the same quadrant of intrusive pseudo-service that marketing geniuses pull out of their left ear. Ostensibly to 'improve' the customer experience. And pad the tab.

    I remember my first turn-down service hotel experience. I was bewildered at first, but quickly figured it out and made good use of it, including those mint chocolates each night. Lol ! Have you ever been to a fancy restaurant where the waiters use formal service protocol and only approach / serve from the left side? That always makes me realize that they are taking it to whole nother level.

    First time First class on an airline, was handed a warm, soft, damp cloth in the shape of a small roll. Stewardess/ Flight Attendant I looked at her, thanked her and thought what in the world is this for. I haven't even eaten yet (thought it was to wipe my mouth). I unravelled it and started to wipe my face and then looking at others around me I realized it was to clean my hands!
    That was a CRUNCHY moment 🤣

    Hey, Fiona! In a world where everyone is trying to "fake it 'til they make it," I LOVE that you broadcast for the world to hear that ... a) you're embarrassed and b) yet still willing to admit that you have never heard of "turn down" service. That's awesome! There is confidence in admitting our weaknesses, ignorance, embarrassment, and the like! I love it! BTW: I too have stayed at nice hotels before, but never had this service offered; so, I didn't really realize that it was a "service," per se; although, I did know that in other contexts that the rich had their beds turned down for them. Sigh.... MY one-time rich people's experience was in a posh hotel's public restroom, whereby the "gentleman" (AKA "restroom attendant") handed me my soap (to wash my hands with), followed by handing me my towel (to dry my hands), followed again by the expectation that I tip him, because no human being can possibly get his own soap and towel without assistance! BTW: LOVE the Jewish accent! Cheers! :-)

    I've been to 2 star hotels that have refreshed stuff and cleaned up, but I always assumed they were told to come while we were away. Never had someone actually ask me for it. I like the idea of just coming in quietly when we are away and cleaning. As long as they are not going to steal anything. No chocolate though. But yeah, the new water was nice. Since I drink a lot of water. I don't remember what exactly they did. But it happened a couple times and I definitely don't get out much. But yeah it's definitely more awkward, when asked compared to just cleaning up while ur away, also makes sense because it makes the turn around faster. When you leave the Hotel. So I understand why it's done. You are beautiful by the way. :-)

    Turndown service is older than US history, initially a servants job. Still, used and continued with the ultra-rich today and "royal" families. But in general, I wouldn't be surprised by much that could be bought and sold.

    I feel so uncomfortable when I come back to my hotel room and realize someone changed sheets and towels, I could understand that for long stays, but when I am somewhere two or three nights it feels completely unnecessary. I like to leave mess but a mess no one else will see (or have to clean), a mess I can return to.

    This part of regular service in Europe and Asia. Most cruises as well. Although, I've not been in the room most times turn down was provided.
    However, one if the best services that high end hotels provide is shoe polishing. Leave out you shoes, and you find them polished when you return :)

    When my brother went to Prom at his high school ..
    he and his date went out to dinner and there were things at that new restaurant he wasn't used to seeing. Something happened, which is kind of funny now, but at the time was very embarrassing for him.
    The butter was placed in desert style little dishes in shape of spheres .. butter balls .. which looked so much like vanilla ice cream that my poor brother .. unknowingly, took his spoon and began eating the butter thinking it was a little appetizer of ice cream .. being served before dinner.
    He later told us that is date, Ann, saw what he was doing and began laughing.
    I guess the moral of the story "at least for me" .. watch out for interesting new shapes in cute little serving dishes on the table of a fancy restaurant .. especially if they look like Vanilla ice cream .. it may very well be butter.

    Lol I’m not rich or well to do by any means, but I had the same questions when I went on my very first vacation. I think I was just under 20. Stayed at a hotel with an assigned attendant who introduced me to how a French press works, asked if I wanted turndown and after telling me what it was I said oh for goodness sakes. No I can handle at least that much. I took the candy and that was it... in addition to my fresh French pressed coffee. That poor guy also had to explain what the bidet was. If you would like a companion to experience rich people stuff, give me a call.

    I loved this discussion. Yes, turn-down service is certainly a fringe benefit of the high-end hotels. I'm sure there are other benefits, but the experiences I have had at such places, I've not taken advantage of. As you, I can pull down my own covers, thank you very much. And like you, I'll take the chocolate, thank you very much. Love your discourse on life. Blessings.

    When was the first time someone was in a hotel room and thought: “I really cannot be arsed to get up and close my curtains” ☎️ “hello Room service”? “And can they also neaten up the bed that was made up pristinely earlier but which I have just mussed up?”
    In Germany I realised that it was a thing that you could choose 5 types of pillow apart from the one on the bed.
    Now if they had a bedtime story, cocoa and “tuck in” service, I might go for that.
    Also Fiona, you realise that after that lady gets turned down 15 times she starts to feel a tad disenfranchised 😂

  • @jeliarra
    @jeliarra 6 років тому

    First, safe journey and come home safely. Indeed I have heard of the turn-down service and mind you, if you except it, you're expected to tip the maid. My first job was a maid at the Vagabond Inn in Sacramento hmm 30 years ago; when we went above and beyond for the customer's stayed at least two nights we would give them "extra care" and usually always got a tip left for us when the customer left. Mind you if we got caught giving extra towels, candy, coffee yada yada we would get reprimanded.
    Do you know the dilemma of waiters /resses? Oh that will send me to the moon! You paid $25.00 for a single salad, then you are expected to PAY the restaurants employees as so many restaurants are paying their waiters $1.50 - 3.50 an hour saying they can earn their money via tips. It gets worse, then the "healthcare" their employer offers is over the top, to expensive. Tax time alone is a chore for these poor workers. So you pay $25.00 for a meal and then pay the restaurant owners pay roll as well. Understand why I curse like a sailor? (UGH misspelled restaurant every time!)
    Hope you're enjoying yourself!

    • @cish6047
      @cish6047 6 років тому +1

      The waiter/esses thing is mostly something I didn't know! I knew they were paid small wages, but not THAT small!! Oh, that stuff makes me so mad!!! I wonder how all that got started?

    • @jeliarra
      @jeliarra 6 років тому

      Cish 60
      GREED Darlin, sheer greed is how it got started. It's our government allowing restaurant owners to continue to get away with it and our faults for not insisting the government correct this injustice. Further let's talk "tips" in general. Tips were given when someone professionally or socially went above & beyond their job description, or was generally quite helpful. Now! Now we the customers are expected to tip for one doing their damn job. Expected to tip when the person providing a service is doing, behaving and whose attitude reflects one that is, will do as little as possible or even under their job duties.

      @@fblairmd66 The Berkeley in London emailed a few days before our arrival asking what temperature we wanted our room on arrival..!! Ha ha.. The service at London's Four Seasons Park Lane is what a friend of mine described as telepathic service, they know what you require before you even know yourself! They log your likes and dislikes in a customer file, so they can surprise you on your next stay. It's hard to go back to regular or mediocre hotels once you've experienced that level of real 5 star service, the Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental, Peninsular benchmark. It's addictive.
