I think he was more specific. I believe he said it was his favorite guitar intro. I could be wrong. I read the interview in the late 70's so I could be delusional.
I've heard this song too many times to count. Watching your reaction made me really listen to this song for the first time in many years. I had forgotten how truly awesome this song is! Thanks for sharing your discovery of great music and breathing new life into my appreciation of music that I grew up with. ☮❤🙏🏻
Just binge watched all your Steely Dan reactions. Dude, there is so much more great shit by Steely Dan. You've only scratched the surface. Keep going! great reactions..btw.
Steely Dan is one of my fav bands. So many excellent songs, great musicians and production. Love Donald's voice too! That guitar tone is everything!!! King Of The World is one of my fav SD songs.
Jay Rah, I sat back and watched all of your Steely Dan vids. I was in high school from 'can't buy a thrill to 'Aja'... yeah, I'm not young anymore. Watching you react to the tonal qualities of this band, makes me smile. Reeling in the years launched a million guitars hero's..heheh.. I have been playing since I was 16 based on that tune. I still can't play; but I still have that guitar. For the last decade, it has been tuned to 'open G' so I can play 'Rain Song' by Led Zeppelin. I have other guitars of course but, that one is special because of 'reeling in the years'. You mentioned a few videos back that you were not exposed to this genre of music and that we should all be open to new forms. My personal quest for the last 50 years has been just that. 25 years ago I was into Tupac. Now, I listen to Latin Jazz. I listened to Rihanna, it has a good sense of rhythm but mainly because she is hot. The great thing about Steely Dan is the variety of instruments they provide for our listening enjoyment along with the sardonic lyrics. Keep digging into this genre, it will yield tremendous rewards for your own musical expressions. Great reactions, great insights, I subbed, and liked. Peace Out.
The guy who plays guitar is named Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, he played guitar from the debut album to Katy Lied. However they got session musician Elliott Randall to play lead on the song and performed the solo. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin has stated that the solo is his all time favorite solo.
Wait til you hear the horns, guitar, and usual phenomenal overall mix and sound production of "My Old School". Try the radio staple "Deacon Blues", too. VERY tasty to the ears, JR.
Used to listen to a radio show called Reeling In The Years and this obviously played as It came on, the show was all about classic rock, thank my dad for his musical influence and always loved this show and King Biscuit Flour Hour if anyone remembers that radio show also! Keep those Steely Dan reactions coming!✌️
Saw them at the Ravinia Festival in Illinois in 2015. They sounded as good as you would expect them to, and DF was in good voice. The back-up singers were amazing. All the way back to Chicago, the people on that double-decker commuter train were singing Steely Dan tunes. A great night and one of my most memorable concerts.
Deacon Blues, Peg. Hey 19, Aja, Haitian Divorce, Do it Again, Kid Charlemagne, My Old School, Green Earrings, Don't Take Me Alive.....Not every SD song is great, but NONE are bad.
The lead guitarist, Jeff Baxter, got his start as a teenager working with Jimi Hendrix at his Electric Ladyland studio, modifying Stratocasters trying to get that elusive sound that Hendrix was looking for. After his stint in The Dan, he went on to play with the Doobie Brothers, while he also worked for the Pentagon, helping to design our missile defense system (I shit you not!), later on, after 9/11, he went to work for the CIA as a counter-terrorism analyst. Baxter is the closest thing we have to a real life Buckaroo Banzai!
Steely Dan is Donald Fagen (vocals, keys) & Walter Becker (bass/guitar) plus the best musicians around. The guitarist on this one is Elliot Randall who played on SD records throughout the 70s, along with a dozen other incredible players! You can't miss with these guys cuz just about every song is great haha
More notable Steely Dan songs: Dirty Work (1972) Bodhisattva, My Old School (1973) Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Any Major Dude Will Tell You (1974) Black Friday, Bad Sneakers (1975) Don't Take Me Alive, Haitian Divorce (1976) Peg, Josie (1977) Babylon Sisters, Hey Nineteen (1980)
Elliot Randall is the guitar player in the version you're listening to although Skunk Baxter is the one that played it live with the band all the time.
Excellent choice - evokes so many memories 👍 Question: your close friends must have seen your channel, what do they think of you discovering great music ?
A great song that reresonates to this day. Black Cow is a great one though Deacon Vlues is one of the real bangers on Aja besides the title track! Check those songs out!👍🏻❤️☮️✌🏻
2 guitarists - Jeff Skunk Baxter and Denny Diaz but Skunk joined the Doobie Bros along with michael McDonald who sang for Steely Dan- that is why you would like Living on the Fault Line - sounds like some Dan
Steely Dan is some of the best music of the 70s & 80s. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen basically recorded with the BEST studio musicians. Notorious perfectionists, they recorded multiple takes with multiple musicians until they liked what they heard. ANY song on their album Aja is excellent!
Love that you listened down to the last note, awesome!, some of the best play is in the fade out. SD, are brilliance, do check out Gaucho, if you haven't, "Hey 19, Babylon Sisters, and also Donald's solo work, "True Companion (Heavy Metal movie soundtrack), Nightfly album, Ruby Baby (my fav, so much old swing to it), I.G.Y., just brilliant,..keep going, enjoy, Godspeed, Peace ✌
They are spicey for sure. This is from their first album, a different vibe than Black Cow. This is more rock while the other songs you’ve heard were from later albums where their sound evolved to more of a jazzy, funky groove. This is 🔥 nonetheless. Enjoy your breakdowns of the instrumentation and production.
I heard you talk about folks hating on Hip Hop I think the problem lies deeper An artist today is alone no financial support These guys were talented but they were given huge budgets to make an album Lots of money to hire the best players money to spend months mixing The Golden age of record companies is over New artists get nothing I think it is way harder to make it now
Chain Lightnin! I never see anyone request that totally kick-ass SD tune. There are no sub-par SD tunes to be found. I've been looking for one since they came on the scene.
Okay music like they said in the other comment yeah you pretty much can't miss with them I kind of like Hey Nineteen and Peg and this one by Steely Dan.
No, Jim Hodder played the drums on this track. The first time Bernard Purdie played for Steely Dan is on the album The Royal Scam, where he played on all but two of the tracks.
@@harrytreakle7986 They always wanted the best. Side note: Walter Becker had no problem NOT playing on one of his songs. He was more concerned that the song be as perfect as he could make it.
Steely Dan = Perfection in music. i defy you to find an average track, let alone a bad one from the groove-masters. I think you'll love FM by them, and Babylon Sisters, and Dont Take Me Alive, and Pretzel Logic, and Night by Night and.....damn,ALL of them.
You know, you’re allowed to do one of these without having to say ‘with that being said.’ 😉 I mean you and every other person who reacts to songs. Just a thought.

Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin has said that the guitar solo in this song is his all-time favorite solo!
Cool!
I think he was more specific. I believe he said it was his favorite guitar intro. I could be wrong.
I read the interview in the late 70's so I could be delusional.
Wow, that is saying a boat load coming from JP!!
I thought the AQUALUNG solo was Jimmy Pages' fave?
Steely Dan made me do it.
Jazz/Rock/Fusion!! Love It!
I'm glad you guys listen to these classic rock songs with great audio headsets. The only way to appreciate great rock is by cranking it up!!
One of my favourite songs from them
That clean and dirty and unforgettable guitar work is by Elliott Randall.
Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne. You'll LOVE IT!!!+
No one is unmoved by the song. The music, the wit and sarcasm of the lyrics, unparalleled in the history of rock. Just amazing
Enjoyed. Thank you.
Also, I suggest reacting to Steely Dan - Hey Nineteen!
Such a staple of 70’s rock!
Every album they ever released was an utter gem.
If you like bass you have to listen to their song "Josie" - so funky and deliciously smooth.
Saw them open for Elton John in the early 70's for 5.75 and they jammed this!
Another Steely Dan fave of mine❤💖❤🤩👍👍👍✌
I've heard this song too many times to count. Watching your reaction made me really listen to this song for the first time in many years. I had forgotten how truly awesome this song is! Anything off of "Aja." It's gold, Jay Rah, gold!
Wow! This is definitely an old one! Love it!
Always a nice surprise when I'm ridin' in my car & this comes on the radio.
My all-time favorite! Nice job!
Sooo many great guitarists & others worked in Steely Dan's music...a collaboration of awesome talent! :D

Steely Dan is one of my fav bands. So many excellent songs, great musicians and production. Love Donald's voice too! That guitar tone is everything!!! King Of The World is one of my fav SD songs.
Elliott Randall is on lead guitar for this recording.

Skunk had a second life as a defense consultant for the Pentagon.
@@JeffreyTheTaylor Yeah I found that really interesting as well, before that he also played for the Doobie Brothers.
Skunk was probably nearby but Elliot Randall was lead guitar on this tune.
@@lancealrick6898 Yeah I made a mistake, sorry about that I went to double check it after the fact whoops

Two great tracks. Don't sleep on Kid Charlemagne!!

Bro..tell me that wasnt one of the sweetest base +slide guitar ever..still love it all these years later..God bless lad
This album has been a part of my life for 50 years (nearly), and i just love the it's still relevant!
You could spend the rest of December playing Steely Dan and still not run out of great music!

I love Steely Dan. Not only for the music, but mostly for their smartass lyrics. They sound like the way I think. 😏 Black Cow is my favorite song.
I love the fact that you picked up on this song being a diss track even though it has such an upbeat shuffle tempo.
Steely Dan ALWAYS brings the fire with the lyrics. 💜💚💛✌️
Hey Jay another great reaction! Try their song Old School. Got some great guitar work in that song!
Man, you're VERY perceptive! Cool.
Denny Dias and "Skunk" Baxter on guitar here...now that's a 1-2 punch!!!!

Yay! The Dan are the most musically sophisticated group ever. They utilized the greatest musicians in jazz and rock.
most musically sophisticated group ever = Rush. But hard to find a bad song from Steely Dan and are streets ahead of 2020 music
Steely Dan is awesome. I’d say my two favorites of theirs are Josie and Hey Nineteen
One of my first eight tracks.
Guitar solos were done by Denny Diaz and. Jeff the skunk Baxter who was also in the Doobie Brothers
Hey Jayrah...I've really been enjoying all of your reactions. It's fun to hear your take on instrumentals & other details of a song! I'm a fan :)
