You gotta understand what a difference FM radio made to music. Suddenly we could hear songs in stereo and static free. We could finally hear all the little nuances of the song that the artist was trying to convey.
And stopped getting yelled at for using up all the tinfoil on our radio Antenna's trying to get college radio signals from NJ & Long Island! 😒🙄 Detetmined to hear Joe Jackson & Adam Ant songs anyway I could back then. 🎤 No Static at all... FM, no static at all! 🤣😂🤣 and no Tinfoil! 😒 Man, I'm old! 😁🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
Dad bought a new Chevy Caprice in 1969 that had an FM Stereo radio. Dad would never have ordered such a luxury but it was already in car. I could not believe my ears when a station was broadcasting in FM Stereo. Going from the crackling AM stations to FM was incredible. Whenever that car was in garage I was in it listening to WDVE (originally KQV) in Pittsburgh.
On April 21, 1974, my wife and I walked into the U. of Toledo sports arena to attend our first Steely Dan concert. I hear someone yell out my name and it turns out my favorite northwest Ohio club band Canary was there to see their musical heroes as well. "Dirty Work" was their go-to slow dance song every night at Yogi's Club in Lima, Ohio.
Back in the day we used to listen to "Teeny Bopper" tunes on A.M. radio full of static. Then around the larger cities they would broadcast in F.M. with "No Static At All" and would play whole sides of albums!
We don't sleep? Not even a wink? Don't blink? Don't doze off? Or even nod to the beats? Nod to Em.... Check out Steely's "Babylon Sisters" , "Time out of Mind"
Fagen and Becker wrote this song for the 1978 movie "FM". Since you like the saxophone definitely consider "West of Hollywood". That song probably has the best sax solo in Steely Dan's discography. It will blow your mind.
This song, for me, captures the essence of the time when American radio was going to a larger FM network. [Mid 1970s...?] Prior to that, AM radio was all there was. Anyone who was around at the time will tell you AM airwaves were prone to static outbursts. We lived in Southern Indiana about 30 miles from our closest radio station. We would be in the car listening to the radio and a big burst of static would come over the speakers, my Dad would say, ' There's a thunderstorm between us and Jasper.'
I like watching your vids. You know your instruments and you hear all the nuances in the background where a lot of people who aren't the musical kind don't notice. Keep up the good work.
When people listen to Steely Dan they "become the music." One of the reasons is because it captures the listener from the very start. You've been captured. Listen to "Pretzel Logic" and you'll become that pretzel with just the right amount of salt.
The song is the theme of a 1978 movie ("FM") that bombed big time at the box office. The three male background singers are members of The Eagles. The sax player is still alive. In his 80's now. Pete Christlieb. He was a member of the Tonight Show band with Johnny Carson then. No synthesizers. A real string section conducted by one of America's greatest songwriters and arrangers, Johnny Mandel.

Your reaction was the same as mine, 1983. I was 19, and had just started my first real job...FM radio Disc Jockey. Having the freedom to play what I wanted was amazing, in as I heard other DJs playing the songs of a group called Steely Dan. With Koss headphones I was forever hooked. BTW, Steely Dan is a "Steam Powered Dildo" in a novel.
This is my wish list: Deacon Blues, Josie, Rikki Don't Lose that Number, Your Gold Teeth II, Aja, Pretzel Logic, Green Earrings, Your Gold Teeth I, The Fez, Throw Back the Little Ones, Reelin' in the Years, My Old School. I think all these songs are great, and I don't believe myself to be a nutjob. So, hope to see you check them out! You are quite prolific, so it is possible. I'm really enjoying the channel!
Going back and watching my favorites for a second time. More Steely Dan PLEASE. All high-end audio stores the few that exist nowadays are going to want to show off their equipment by playing Steely Dan

Edgar Burroughs' novel "Naked Lunch," which made mention of a "steely dan," a steam-powered adult toy. This playful reference fit perfectly within the framework of Steely Dan's angular arrangements and Fagen's often bitingly cynical and sarcastic lyrics.
I love hearing your reaction and appreciation for the layering and production of this timeless music. You could be a grand child of mine and this is some of my fav’s from the 70’s. My generation. You have good taste my friend.😘
Love your channel. May I suggest something you've most likely not heard of or been asked for? George Benson. Check out Affirmation, or Breezin, This Masquerade....... 3 good ones to start. His voice and guitar are ridiculously good.
"Give Me The Night" is another good one. "This Masquerade" is fantastic. Benson slays. (Karen Carpenter does a beautiful version as well with Richard on the keys.)
Any Steely Dan song is a good music. Most young people don’t realize that radio used to be AM only. When FM came around it was like the heavens opened up. And that’s really all we had back then was radio or LPs. We had 8 tracks too but that was later.
Play anything you want from Steely Dan, there are no disappointments. They are professional from their first album to their last. There were only two members of Steely Dan, Walter Becker (RIP) and Donald Fagan. All of the other musicians are studio musicians, which not only saved them money, but allowed them to chose the very best of the best. Smart.
That’s not entirely true about Steely Dan only being 2 members. They were a band with a core lineup that toured for the first few years until 1974. That year most of the band members left and Fagen and Becker started using only session musicians with the 1975 album Katy Lied. The original band was: David Palmer - lead vocals Donald Fagen - lead vocals/keys Walter Becker - bass Jeff “Skunk” Baxter - guitar Denny Dias - guitar Jim Hodder - drums

With your thoughtful analysis and sincere appreciation of this song, I'm an INSTANT subscriber Brother Jay! GREAT job man. I was a kid, 15 or so when this dropped. It was from a soundtrack and I bought it for THIS song. Man, I lit up some Christmas buds (.i.e. purple hair Kona buds), kicked back, and just flat out couldn't hear ENOUGH of this! I still think it's easily Walter Becker's best guitar work he ever did, funky & painfully sweet, on top of this ULTIMATELY lush, fat-daddy endless groove... For those of us who grew up with albums, the beauty of the CD was hitting the repeat button, and letting our fave-rave tunes play till we got our fill LOL!
Have you listened to “Babylon Sisters”? The legendary drummer, Bernard Purdie- creator of the “Purdie Shuffle” aka the High Hat, played his famous Shuffle on this song. Brilliance. Listen to this, then “Rosanna” by Toto, and then “Fool in the Rain” by Led Zepplin. Same Hi-hat drum sequence. Apparently one on of the hardest drum sequence ever.
You obviously know music. It's nice how you point out the various features and elements of the song. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were known for incorporating funk into their music. They would put together multiple studio musicians (forming several separate bands) and audition them until they found the sound they were looking for. They did this with every song. To say they were perfectionists is an understatement. Musicians would learn they'd made the cut upon hearing the song on the radio!
