Moana 2 is an upcoming American animated musical fantasy adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the second installment in the Moana franchise and a sequel to Moana (2016). The film is directed by Dave Derrick Jr. (in his feature directorial debut) and produced by Osnat Shurer. Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson will reprise their roles as Moana and Maui, respectively.
Development on Moana 2 originally began in 2020 as a television series for Disney+, before being reworked into a theatrical sequel by February 2024. Shurer was confirmed to return as producer, alongside story artist Derrick as director, making him the first Samoan to direct a Walt Disney Animation Studios film. Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa'i, the composers and co-songwriters of the first film, return to score and write songs, while Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear replace Lin-Manuel Miranda as songwriters.
Moana 2 is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 27, 2024.

Disney making theatrical sequels is very much them staying with the times tbh. Back then sequels were rarely made, but now we live in a time where the only successful movies are sequels or ones that are based on an existing franchise.
Not only that, but it feels like a lot of people aren't really all that interested in the recent original movies that Disney has come out with. Soul and Encanto seem well liked, but people aren't too fond of Turning Red, Strange World, Onward, Raya and the Last Dragon, Luca, Elemental, and Wish. Maybe that's why Disney is resorting back to pumping out sequels again and now we're seeing Moana 2, Inside Out 2, Frozen 3 & 4, and Toy Story 5.
Also i agree with Ben, I liked when the disney animated studios feature film list wasn't littered with sequels and each film had its own world/story etc

Even though I don’t have high hopes for this movie, I do love how they’ve done the same thing that several of the direct-to-DVD sequels did back in the day:compiled episodes of cancelled TV shows that were meant to be sequels to their respective films.

it would have been interesting to see it as a tv series just to learn more about the plot in that sense, but I dont mind it either way I just hope with the storyline being made into a film rather than tv show, that it doesnt feel rushed

I agree that it’s better that “Disney animated classics” didn’t have so sequels. It just feels more special. But these days I can’t blame them. I just wish they’d have a different designation or they released the sequel and an original in the year

I know that A Bug's Life wasn't really super popular, but it's so strange to me that Disney and Pixar never thought to make a Bug's Life 2. Like, how the hell did we get a sequel to Planes before A Bug's Life ? That's crazy to me. I miss my boy Heimlich 😂. I'm still curious to know what Toy Story 5 is going to be about ? I wonder if Buzz, Jessie, and the others are gonna somehow get Bonnie's parents to turn the RV around and convince Woody and Bo Peep to come along with them or is Woody just not appearing in the movie at all.

Disney Animation is trying to play safe given that people bailed on their latest originals, 'Strange World' and 'Wish', and surprisingly, 'Encanto' being a flop. So, if 'Frozen 2' passed the 1 billion mark and 'Inside Out 2' trailer got most views, no surprise with these decisions of them as a company. Whose fault is it? An entertainment company driven by capitalism or an audience who don't support originals? Whatsoever, we are officially entering Disney's sequel era..

She’s an executive producer for the live action and I truly believe it’s age cause when she voiced Moana back then, she was literally a 16 year old girl and she wants to give someone else a chance to be a 16 year old girl. That’s what I believe

@@EdizAndBen its probably not something to talk about but I think I read somewhere that she wanted to try producing movies and since Moana started her entire career, she wanted to work closely with the live action to make sure it lives to the expectations of the original and like you said it’s been 8 years, lots of changes have happened since she voiced her character
