- Unboxing and giving first opinions on the NYOS Quantum 120 Protein Skimmer.
If you've had any experience with this skimmer please leave a comment of what you think!
Hi, you got any updates on this yet in running mode, looking to get one for my tmc reef habitat. Currently got a tmc reef-skim 300. Too noisy 😝
Hey Chris!
Was actually just getting the tripod out to do an update!
It's working really well - much quieter than any other skimmer I've used, I'll get an update video posted today.
Which model Reef-habitat do you have? I just upgraded to the TMC RH 60 - not too bad a tank ^_^
Ah nice one, i went for the same habitat 60, great tank 👌 only problem i have is with the tmc rsk 300, just too noisy for my liking but i have heard the nyos 120 is really quiet. My tank has just finished cycling so looking to start stocking up. Are you using the tmc auto top up?. Cheers
Agreed, really good tanks!
The Nyos is quiet - I've just posted an update video and added some decibel tests at the end to try give a feel of the sound that comes off it - to be honest I barely notice it.
Ohhhh you're in for a sweet ride now that the cycles done - any idea's on what you're going to stock?
I am not using the TMC ATO - I've got a float switch ATO that I need to replace at some point, but it does the job!
Did you consider the Rsk 300?
Hey!
I did consider it along with the Deltec 400i - but went for the NYOS simply for how quiet people say they are - and so far I am pretty happy - will need to do an update on it soon!
Sweet Coraline have you got it up and running yet I’m about to buy a skimmer today and I’m stuck between that 120 nyos skimmer and the Rsk 300, previous slimmer packed in so curious how you got on with it so far
@@PrestigiousP yeah had it up and running for about a week and a half now - it's super quiet and picked up skimmate within a good 2/3 days, if I had to give a break down for you here's what I'd say;
Pros;
- Super Quiet
- Looks really slick in the sump
- Build quality is really good
- Really good tuning ability
- Small Footprint
Cons;
- Missing extra features (i.e. on the rsk-300 / Nyos 160 and up)
- Can be a bit difficult to take the cup off
- The tuning takes a bit of playing around with to get perfect
- Requires quite a deep 'optimal' water level around 8" (Running mine in around 6")
Hope this helps and I'll make sure to do a follow up video on the skimmer and give some real world thoughts!
Let me know if you have any other questions or want to have a chat about Skimmers - always keen to talk Reefing! (Also keep me posted on which you decide!)
Sweet Coraline that’s really helpful thanks!! Just curious what was the missing features that the 160 nyos had that the 120 was missing ? After using your skimmer for the time you’ve had it would you say the extra features the Rsk gives you has felt needed ie the neck cleaning thing, what I liked about the nyos was it’s spiral bubble diffuser which increases the contact time apparently does you nyos seem to spiral in some vortex movement in the skimmer chamber ? And if you had to do it all again with what you learned so far from using it would you change anything ? Sorry for the bombarding off questions ! I’d really like to talk reefing with ya mate ! Haha
So the 160 and up have two features the 120 doesn't - 1. The Clear Pump neck so you can see the pump mix the water and air together (Not a big deal, but it's helpful to see if anything needs a clean) 2. The in-built drainage to the Skimmer Cup - I would've really liked to have seen this on the 120, but I can live without it, the 120's cup is actually pretty large and would hold quite a lot of skimmate once settled.
Personally the RSK features are great, especially for the price - however now I have the NYOS I am leaning more towards them being novelty than useful, but that's purely from my perspective on what I was looking for in a skimmer (Quiet / Low Power Draw - the 120 uses a quoted 8W / Good tuning for wet-dry skimming) - If you went for either skimmer you'd be happy for sure! although now I have the 120 up and running I am pretty impressed and don't feel like I've missed out by not getting the RSK-300. (One thing to note is the 120 has a two-pin plug, so if you're in the UK they supply an adapter)
You 100% get a nice vortex look in the skimmer chamber, looks like a tornado when you get the air/water ratio in balance and is a really cool effect! (Would be awesome on an open cabinet)
If I did it all again knowing what I know now, I don't think I'd change the NYOS - and to be honest I was really unhappy when I first got it (the 2-pin plug / no drainage / Not the clear pump) - but after the past week plus, I am really enjoying the skimmer, it looks awesome, is really quiet, draws practically no power, works well in a lower volume of water and can be tuned really accurately - you certainly would not be disappointed!
No worries about asking questions - it's always useful to get first hand knowledge with equipment, otherwise you're £££ down and might be unhappy with your purchase - happy to help and why I've started these videos!
Which one do you reckon you're leaning towards?
