    Sir,
Your videos are inspiring, and I really appreciate your low tech techniques like probing a cap with another to see if they are open. I always learn something. My first eBay radio arrives today and I hope to restore it. Thanks for a great new way to waste money and time, but seriously thanks for your videos. Charlie in Virginia

You could try making a crystal radio out of that germanium rock

Don't give him ideas,he's got a lot on his plate. That is a good suggestion however!

I'm going to be that guy...
I think he said its Galena (lead(II) sulphide), not Germanium.
Having said that, "that rock" would still work in a crystal radio, as would a bunch of other mineral crystals.

Just a note, I like the radio videos more then the TV anyhow, that's why I keep coming back to your video collection, when there is nothing new, there are a lot of radio videos I can go back to and re-watch thanks a million for taking the time out of your life and making these great entertaining videos for us, to top it off, it seems I always learn something even when watching a video for the 2nd or even 5th time.

That's a neat radio. Since I got into the car business as a kid in about 1995, NAPA has really fallen off. They are my last choice for parts anymore, took me a long time to learn that lesson.

I hope you can find more novelty radios, they’re so cool. I’ve got a ‘29 Lincoln model car radio from the late 70s. The sound was always distorted and a couple of years ago the local oscillator died. While I was trying to get it to oscillate again, I found a Rolls Royce from the same series (there were three) with missing parts and poor finish at a local thrift store. I swapped the radio into the Lincoln and have it on my bookshelf. The Rolls is in a drawer with the Lincolns radio, which still won’t oscillate.

18:15 "... self asphyxiate, I think everyone should just put a plastic bag over their head..."
“I thought,” he said, “that if the world was going to end we were meant to lie down or put a paper bag over our head or something.”
“If you like, yes,” said Ford.
“That’s what they told us in the army,” said the man, and his eyes began the long trek back down to his whisky.
“Will that help?” asked the barman.
“No,” said Ford and gave him a friendly smile.”

"I should make a radio out of this."
Well, as kids we used to make radios using a galena cat whisker detector. With a tuning coil hand wound around a cardboard core from a toilet paper roll. I wonder if Shango is up to the challenge.

Start with an older solid state AM radio that uses a glass diode detector (germanium)
Unsolder and remove the original diode, leaving two open points on the circuit board.
Solder separate long wires with clips or probes into the circuit where the diode was connected..
The free ends of the probes can then be used as contact points by touching on the mineral sample.
Try different metals on the probe tips, that might cause differences in rectification.

from wikipedia: Galena is a semiconductor with a small band gap of about 0.4 eV, which found use in early wireless communication systems. It was used as the crystal in crystal radio receivers, in which it was used as a point-contact diode capable of rectifying alternating current to detect the radio signals. The galena crystal was used with a sharp wire, known as a "cat's whisker" in contact with it.

Galena--a NATURAL semiconductor. These Galena "crystals" were found in very old crystal sets-had one when I was a kid.Didn't need power.Used with a headphone. Also remember you could wind the coil for a crystal set on a Quaker Oats cardboard "can" they came in.

i guess there is one thing good about californy, shango gets more AM stations than we have FM. there are 0 RAP staions, 1 pop sation, 2 rock stations, 3 country stations, 1 or two oldies stations, and i think 4 chrichy stations but one of them shuts off. and National Democrat Radio also known as NPR.
AM is hard to pick up but its mostly sports.
