- In this video, we review Taketsuru Pure Malt Japanese whisky.
Named for Masataka Taketsuru, one of the men credited with founding the whisky industry in Japan, this pure malt whisky comes in at 43% ABV.
Taketsuru Pure Malt Whisky has some fairly strong notes of smoke on the palate, with more subtle hints of fruit and spice. As you'll see in the video, the smokiness of this whisky appealed more to some of us than others.
We also very briefly explore the history of Japanese whisky in this video. Masataka Taketsuru studied under Scottish distillers in Scotland and brought the knowledge he gained back to Japan in the early 1920s. He worked for Shinjiro Torii at his whisky company, which would eventually become Suntory.
Convinced that making whisky in a climate more similar to Scotland would be beneficial, Taketsuru went on to start his own distillery farther north in Japan. Years later, this distillery would become part of Nikka, the Japanese whisky brand that produces the eponymous Taketsuru Pure Malt.
