I feel like more people I know remember Wallace and gromit than Gumby, the magic roundabout also used to be an iconic piece in British stop motion although it was ruined in that terrible 2006 movie.
It’s probably better that way, unless if they get someone to voice him similar to Dallas McKennon, it probably wouldn’t be as good, also the latest Gumby revival was for a Honda commercial, it was cute, but Gumby’s voice was cute , but well…. It didn’t sound ANYTHING like the character.
Honesty even though people may not like the movie it honesty doesn’t feel like a cash grab it felt like people who worked on the movie tried their best unlike other movies made to make a quick buck
I'll always be a defender of this movie. I grew up with this movie on VHS. The music is catchy, the animation is wonderful and the final battle is awesome!
I remember I loved this movie so much when I was little my babysitter got me a copy bc she brought it over and I always wanted to watch it 😅 It’s been ages since I’ve seen it but so many scenes still pop in my head
I agree. I just don't understand why some people in the comment section are criticizing this film (I'm not going to watch this video, though, since he gave us a hint at what he thinks). I mean, do we seriously have to agree with anything AniMatt says for his reviews for so called "bad" or "mediocre" animated films? Who cares if they're not like Disney or Pixar or Studio Ghibli? For example, I never grew up with The Pagemaster (I wish I did, though), but I thought it was very imaginative, and it makes me want to pick up a book (even if I have to waist time looking up unfamiliar vocab words in the dictionary).
They should make another Gumby movie that’s in the same vain as the 2011 muppet movie which was to reintroduce the characters to a new generation of people and give people who grew up with Gumby some nostalgic memories of watching it when they where kids
I’m not really into Gumby that much since I’m more of a Aardman person of stop motion, but yeah I can see how this movie can be slow like a sloth. James and the giant peach is coming up next though
This movie felt more like so many episodes clotted up into one mess with so many plots & subplots. *Pokey searching for Gumby *Pokey, Goo, and Prickle get smooshed together & go to the hospital to get separated *Gumby starring in a band (this wouldn't be the first time either) *Pokey feeling envious towards The Clay Boys because Gumby spent more time with them lately *Gumby & band team up to save local farms from the Blockheads *Gumby's dog Lowbelly suddenly having the ability to cry pearls (insert the Savage Garden song "Tears of Pearls" ) *The Blockheads dognapped Lowbelly & tried to make him cry *Gumby & the Clayboys get kidnapped and have robot clones replacing them *Goo gets kidnapped *Gumby fights his robot duplicate through many books *A sudden love story between Gumby & Tara *Gumby & band are assigned to make a music video *Gumby & Pokey are actually two parts of an alien satellite slab (that looks like the one from "Space Odyssey" ) That is a whole lot to take in! I may be a Gumby fan, but this movie was more messy than a paintball fight in a mud pit.
To be fair to the series: it was the initial cartoon that held a lot of wonder and creativity, but the character and plots were not meant to be a cinematic experience. It’s ignorant to assume the entire franchise must be a mess, because of its little known film. That would be equal to saying the Indiana Jones and Star Wars franchises must suck overall then, because they also have 1 or 2 films fans consider tanked. Don’t make a review unless you actually have more context next time. Your research gets more thumbs down than the movie got in 95’ lol
I think AniMat you were watching the original theatrical version from the 1995 VHS. If you really wanted to get a better first exposure to Gumby through the film, you should have probably watched the Director’s Cut which did try to improve the pacing of the film by shortening the original 90 minute runtime to 76. But I remember watching the original Gumby shorts in art class and I remember being entertained at the very least.
Fun Fact: There is a compilation film from 1987 called The Puppetoon Movie, in it showcases the stop motion shorts of Hungarian animatior George Pal and features wrap around segments in which Gumby appears as a film director.
Geez, I did not expect the voice acting to be THIS robotic. Also, what I think of The Revenant, Ad Astra and The Midnight Sky somehow made it through a thumbnail for an AniMat Classic Review.
I could not BE a bigger fan of this movie. I love Gumby Adventures and am very familiar with the characters, so lemme give you my take on all of this: The pacing, animation and acting are not really the problem (though they are definitely painful lol) the problem is with the story. The lack of definition for the characters is criminal. In the original cartoons there ARE no clayboys, and even though I like them a lot and think they have a lot of potential, the problem is that the main characters get swept to the side for them and the band, even Gumby himself. The characters have always been simple, but more well-defined in the original stuff. Gumby is a goody-two-shoes boyscout whose edge only shows when he wants to make a difference, or show off. Pokey is a foil to him in that he’s sort of an eyore, negative, lazy and cowardly, but sensitive and careful when Gumby is impulsive. Prickle is a fun-loving, chilled out, emotion-riding dude and Goo is the sweet, tough “mom” of the group lol. Thing is, they used to be a band all together, no clayboys And don’t get me wrong, they were fucking awful lmao. With the clayboys, Gumby definitely traded up, but in this movie -that- is why Pokey acts so badly, he feels betrayed. Yet, for some reason, this isn’t the plot? It’s barely mentioned. Like, I am very used to Gumby as a show being insane, slow, nonsensical, pointless plots. But for the movie they should have done better. Not in acting, animation, or even pacing - but in story. Despite the insanity of the franchise they DO have solid characters and dynamics to work with! Those four characters are all well-defined, and yet, they barely make an impact, other than Gumby and his martyr complex making him determined to help the farmers haha. Don’t get me wrong, I love this movie, the weird pacing and quality make it unique and memorable to me. I love the new characters, the creativity (and by GOD the music is better) but they did miss a big opportunity to give the four main characters chances to shine on the big screen. I don’t at all blame you for finding the main characters boring and flat, they barely make themselves known. At least the sets are cool, and the animation is wonderfully trippy! haha. Anyway, your review was 100% fair, I really have no complaints or counter-arguments; I fully agree with it all. But as a Gumby fan myself, just thought I’d share my specific perspective. Thanks for even making a video about it! It makes me happy to see people even find any joy in it, stil. Sincerely, a true Gumby fan.
This is the first stop motion film that everyone considered bad and first to get the seal of garbage. In fact, this movie could fit well in Animats top 10 worst movies based on a cartoon.
I remember the series since I was a kid and it was good, and it was the first animated series to featured claymation as an experimental tool. Gumby has been a series back in the 1950’s and 1960’s and it was revived in the 1980’s, and it had a slow pace. It was created by Art Clokey where he later created another stop-motion animated series “Davey & Goliath” which was produced for the Lutheran Church of America for churches, and it does contained religious subjects. The location for the entire series was made with toys.

Man, I remember how some of the VHS's I had as I kid had the trailer for this, where they made it seem like a film noir, and then tried to be "rad" with the title reveal with guitar riffs!
I guess that even snails, tortoises and sloths would be like "This movie is slow AF!!!" Jokes aside, maybe you were a wee bit harsh on this one, but just a bit.
I’ll admit that I have a soft spot for the Gumby movie, both due to just how weird it is and watching it frequently as it kid due to owning ot on VHS. But looking back at it nowadays...yeah, it ain’t very good. It’s like they had no idea how to fill a feature-length runtime, and so just threw in whatever they could think of. It’s funny that you reviewed this now though, since I was just recently thinking of it for some reason lol.
I think one of this film’s greatest weaknesses is just how horribly muddled the plot is. It feels more like a compilation of loosely related episodes stapled together with little revision or sense of continuity. So much is happening that it’s impossible to remember what the heart of the story is meant to be. Is it about Gumby and his friends saving a farm from bankruptcy? Is it about Gumby and Pokey trying to fix a rocky patch in their friendship? Is it about the gang’s quest for stardom? Is it about saving Lowbelly? How does one keep up with this massacre of a plot? Plus, this film is filled with absurd plotholes. Why didn’t the gang just take the Blockheads to the police instead of leaving them in the lab and forcing them to till the field? Where are the stakes in Gumby’s fight against his robot clone when he can just regenerate himself? What was the point of the surgery scene? Since when do the characters get stuck being fused together? Overall, this movie is a bit of a disappointment to newcomers and fans of Gumby alike. I will say this though, the musical segment at the end, “Take Me Away,” is easily the best part of the movie. The music rocks, the visuals are fantastic, and it’s a perfect representation of what the movie could have been. It deserves a watch by itself, and I will defend that statement no matter what anyone says.
I also always saw the Gumby shorts as being more of a "stream of conciousness" type of cartoon, a little more surreal then the other stuff that was on tv at the time, both the original run and even in the 80s.
This is probably AniMat at his harshest, but hopefully will someday give this Gumby movie a second chance. At least with his review of "Sgt Stubby", he gave that film a decent score which I gave him credit for.
You kidding? He was WAAAAAY more harsh in his early years. At least here, he kept an open mind on certain things, like how this was his introduction to Gumby.
@Sean Anderson Probably, he would called that film "overrated" with the Rottrn Tomatoes score, but, for me, I say it's decent at best from Sony Pictures Animation.
Theres a article on this film in ANIMATO! magazine back in 95, The creator was planning this on this while making the mid 80's Nickelodeon series.... Completed it 92, took 3 more years to find a rightful studio to release it...
Ah yes, I've heard of this series awhile back as kid both the show and the movie. Admittedly the movie Itself not only put me to sleep but sometime gave me nightmares but now that I'm grown up years later I'm not too bored of this like It used to but this series still bettered better then this.
2:50 I think the slow is actually just part of it... I’ve seen the Tv show and it’s also slow if you want a good stop motion movie I suggest the French film “a town called panic” it fully understands it’s weird and uses it to its advantage
Hey, Animat. I would like you to review these films: -The Rugrats Movie -Beavis and Butt-head Do America -Curious George -Once Upon a Forest -The Trumpet of the Swan -Clifford's Really Big Movie -Delgo -Rugrats in Paris: the Movie -Barnyard -The Last Unicorn -Eight Crazy Nights -Starchaser: the Legend of Orin -Oliver and Company -Valiant -Tom and Jerry: the Movie (1992) -Rover Dangerfield -Cats Don't Dance -The Wild Thornberrys Movie -Doug's 1st Movie
Wow. For a short film released in the 1970s, this doesn't look bad. Oh, wait. A full-length movie made in 1995? Yeah, I've got a thing I've got to take care of.
Animat, which version of Gumby did you watch? The Theatrical cut, 90 minutes, or the directors cut, 77 minutes? Also, oooooo. James and The Giant Peach might be next
0:23 - The people in my life have heard of King 👑 Kong and Wallace & Gromit but not Gumby or Jack Skellington. Gumby and The Nightmare Before Christmas 🎄 were more successful in America than the UK 🇬🇧
Full Voice Actor List Dallas McKennon: Gumby, Two Band Members, The Producer, Multiple Males (Last Movie Before Death) - Art Clokey: Pokey, Prickle, Gumbo (Gumby's Father), Multiple Males (Last Creation Before Death) - Gloria Clokey: Goo - Janet McDuff: Gumba (Gumby's Mother) Bonnie Rudolph: Lowbelly, Multiple Females - Manny La Carruba: The Third Band Member - Alice Young: Ginger - Patti Morse: Tara, Multiple Females - David Ozzie Ahlers: A Radio Announcer - The Blockheads: NONE! The Blockheads did not talk at all!
Hmm. Movie from the 90's, stop motion, Henry Selik and a jazzy sounding soundtrack? I do believe it may be James and the Giant Peach! Sweet, I love that movie! ;3
Wow, it's really a bad stop motion film? Never I thought we would end up seeing one like ever. For every stop motion film always has the upper quality to never be bad. Other than one made for a specific audience, it honestly makes you feel sorry for it since all the time and patience to be made a bad stop motion film is already wasted.
I love Gumby, but what bugged me about the movie was introducing the Clayboys Fatbuckle, Thinbuckle and Nobuckle from out of nowhere without any proper introduction to them. Plus, I didn't understand them creating Lowbelly when Gumby already had a dog named Nopey who would always say no.
Yeah Matt I have always been an Aardman fan so I naturally go with Morph but I do like the SNL skits where Eddie Murphy plays Gumby those are absolutely hilarious
Ah yes, the “Make a dog cry and become rich” movie of the famous clay icon. I only remember Gumby from the Screaming Skull episode of MST3K with “Robot Rumpus” Also, since Gumby (and apparently everyone in this picture) can reconstruct himself, doesn't that beat the point of the blockheads to destroy him with a robot?
I'm almost offended that you didn't even bother to watch any of the old Gumby shorts before reviewing this. On top of that, this Gumby movie is a real outlier from the rest of the franchise. There are a ton of characters in this movie that were never in any of the iterations of the show. i.e. Gumby's bandmates the Clay Boys, his tv producer/manager and his sort of girlfriend Tara and her friends, the dog that cries when Gumby changes his shape.(can't remember his name, either way this plot point goes nowhere and said dog sucks compared to Nopey, Gumby's dog from the shorts) None of these guys existed before this movie, even though it pretends that they did. Gumby did have a band in the 80's shorts, but it consisted of Prickle, Goo and Pokey. Art Clokey never explained why he changed that for the film. Plus this film doesn't showcase the Gumby cast very well at all, nobody really gets a chance to shine here. Also, the pacing problem may very well be due to the movie's run time. Gumby's adventures were typically five to seven minutes long with some being closer to ten minutes on rare occasions. And they were often lively, action packed, affairs. (especially the older shorts) It seems like they focused too much on the story which obviously wasn't strong enough to carry the runtime. To see Gumby at his best you should go back and watch his earliest shorts from the 50's and early 60's. Nothing against the later versions of the show, but those first episodes just have an energy and imaginative drive that is on another level. Also try to get ahold of copies that have the original audio. During the 80's they redubbed all of the old Gumby shorts with those weird "robotic" voices and pretty bad electric keyboard music. (this movie features said weird voices and music... though admittedly some of the songs are pretty good) Also you'll be happy to hear that those uncanny valley realistic humans didn't exist in those older Gumby shorts.
It's sucks!! I actually wanted more Gumby and Pokey's falling out in the state of their friendships. Gumby going off to college by leaving his old friends behind and new friends coming to his life. But since it's a kid movie.. there is no mean spirited tone.
I haven't Gumby the Movie but I should watch the tv series episodes before seeing the movie and I honestly couldn't believed you give this clay motion or stop motion animated film a Seal of Garbage. But I do respect your opinion and your first impression on Gumby. I honestly can't wait to see your review James and the Giant Peach! 😃😀😄😁😊 👍🏻 💖❤
I tend to prefer the earlier 50s/60s Gumby style, the 80s style that the movie uses (especially the weird thing they do to the voices of the main characters) was always a little off for me. The charm is in the imperfection of the clay above all else.
Unlike Animat, I actually did see the television show before I saw this movie. And believe it or not, I actually prefer this movie instead of the television show. The problem is that the episodes were too short; I would expect these stories from theatrical cartoons more than television episodes. And because they were too short, they did not have enough time to tell an actual story. That's what I like about this movie, with more than an hour of screen time, it had an actual story to tell. A concert to save some farms, and two villains stealing pearls? I mean Animat says this is not much of a story, and he says this movie can get slow, but with how bored I got with the television episodes, I honestly did not put my expectations high to begin with. And you know what? I was satisfied with the story I got, especially the rock-and-roll ending. That music was awesome! You know what? This movie is a guilty pleasure to me. I say it's better to have a story that is "too slow" than to have no story at all.
"Can I play outside, mom?" "Did you drink your milk?" Sorry, when viewing the '50s show, that phrase has been ingrained into my mind. It's like it was made during a time when humor wasn't entirely allowed on children's programming, but bizarre visuals were. (Not really, but it sure feels that way.) Also, Gumby didn't have eyebrows at first. However, the train that makes its own tracks is a fun idea.
He's green. He's clay. He's a cosmic display. And his movie is underwhelming. Also, I didn't know it was made in 95! I thought it was made in the 80s...
7:46 - I guess that's what makes The Adventures Of Mark Twain and the early work of Aardman like LipSync and Babylon superior to Gumby The Movie 🎥. While realistic animation styles can be unsettling to some, Aardman and Will Vinton stuck to that art style (when they used it) and never tried to mix it with other art styles in 1 project
Gumby was an underrated classic show. Pokey was one of my early childhood comfort characters.
Keep in mind that this was released in 1995, the same year Toy Story got released
Was thinking about that. I always thought Gumby was a character from the 70's
What does that have to do with anything?
Also the same year A Goofy Movie was released.
@@arbuckle6103 Whoo! Love that movie! :)

I always thought Gumby was a very iconic claymation alongside Wallace and Gromit.
I was used to be scared of him
Yeah he did made a appearance in a coach gag of the Simpsons.
The difference was that Wallace & Gromit were more iconic.

I think both the Jim Henson Group and Stoopid Monkey have tried, but nothing panned out.

8:11 Flint Lockwood types more subtle
James and the Giant Peach is up next YAY!
How can you tell other then what matt just said
@@vincenzogiordano9850 The music that Mat puts in is a hint. James and the Giant Peach music is very recognisable.
@@joesSONICBOOM I thought he would play good news for it though
I also always saw the Gumby shorts as being more of a "stream of conciousness" type of cartoon, a little more surreal then the other stuff that was on tv at the time, both the original run and even in the 80s.
This is probably AniMat at his harshest, but hopefully will someday give this Gumby movie a second chance. At least with his review of "Sgt Stubby", he gave that film a decent score which I gave him credit for.
You kidding? He was WAAAAAY more harsh in his early years.
At least here, he kept an open mind on certain things, like how this was his introduction to Gumby.
Uhhh... are you sure about that?
@Sean Anderson Probably, he would called that film "overrated" with the Rottrn Tomatoes score, but, for me, I say it's decent at best from Sony Pictures Animation.
@Sean Anderson At least he knows it was wrong of him to say stuff like that and he learned from it.
@@disneyfan8719 you defend him rabidly on Twitter, don't you?
Theres a article on this film in ANIMATO! magazine back in 95, The creator was planning this on this while making the mid 80's Nickelodeon series.... Completed it 92, took 3 more years to find a rightful studio to release it...
One of the first movies I ever loved. I've wanted a sequel for 23 years
Due to the film’s performance and negative reception, there won’t be a sequel.
@@stevennorthrup5790 I guess the 1 in the title was meant to be a parody, like Loaded Weapon 1 and History of the World Part 1.
Exactly. Guess they didn’t want to make a sequel due to the film’s poor performance at the box office.
I used to watch Gumby on UA-cam years ago.

That Bendefits pun made me think things that I will never tell a SINGLE SOUL
@@scoutart1508 have you heard of the term Friends With Benefits
Ah yes, I've heard of this series awhile back as kid both the show and the movie. Admittedly the movie Itself not only put me to sleep but sometime gave me nightmares but now that I'm grown up years later I'm not too bored of this like It used to but this series still bettered better then this.
James and the giant peach is next
Next one will be James and the giant peach, and just in time for its 25th anniversary too.
2:50 I think the slow is actually just part of it... I’ve seen the Tv show and it’s also slow
if you want a good stop motion movie I suggest the French film “a town called panic” it fully understands it’s weird and uses it to its advantage
finally the review is here, I was wondering where this review was at for every monthly on why it took long
but also yay James & the Giant Peach next

review mcjuggerneggets series
Wow. For a short film released in the 1970s, this doesn't look bad.
Oh, wait. A full-length movie made in 1995? Yeah, I've got a thing I've got to take care of.
I remember renting and watching this with my siblings a whole lot as a kid.
And James & the Giant Peach is next? Now you're talking.
Animat, which version of Gumby did you watch? The Theatrical cut, 90 minutes, or the directors cut, 77 minutes?
Also, oooooo. James and The Giant Peach might be next
Apparently the theatrical cut.
I was doing my best
I don't really like Gumby but am fine.
I'm more of a Wallace and Gromit kind of guy.
Me too.
0:23 - The people in my life have heard of King 👑 Kong and Wallace & Gromit but not Gumby or Jack Skellington. Gumby and The Nightmare Before Christmas 🎄 were more successful in America than the UK 🇬🇧
Next up Animat is going to talk about Henry Selick’s Second Animated Film from the 90s just in time for its 25th Anniversary
Full Voice Actor List
Dallas McKennon: Gumby, Two Band Members, The Producer, Multiple Males (Last Movie Before Death) - Art Clokey: Pokey, Prickle, Gumbo (Gumby's Father), Multiple Males (Last Creation Before Death) - Gloria Clokey: Goo - Janet McDuff: Gumba (Gumby's Mother) Bonnie Rudolph: Lowbelly, Multiple Females - Manny La Carruba: The Third Band Member - Alice Young: Ginger - Patti Morse: Tara, Multiple Females - David Ozzie Ahlers: A Radio Announcer - The Blockheads: NONE! The Blockheads did not talk at all!
You're too slow! -Sonic the hedgehog
Hmm. Movie from the 90's, stop motion, Henry Selik and a jazzy sounding soundtrack?
I do believe it may be James and the Giant Peach! Sweet, I love that movie! ;3
Basically this is a ninety minute episode of the explosive clay animation show "Gumby Adventures".
As "The Duke of Artz" this is going to be Triple great Great GREAT 😉👍👍👍!
I have always loved Gumby since I was little in the 1995.
James and the Giant Peach is next!
Yes
Review UP
Either James and the Giant Peach or Monkeybone is next
Technically, this movie was produced in the late '80s, with a budget of $3M. It didn't find a distributor until 1995.
In the characters section, you forgot to mention Goo. The blue clay figure with the blonde hair
Sadly forgetable
I used to be obsessed with this movie when I was a little kid
I love Gumby, but what bugged me about the movie was introducing the Clayboys Fatbuckle, Thinbuckle and Nobuckle from out of nowhere without any proper introduction to them. Plus, I didn't understand them creating Lowbelly when Gumby already had a dog named Nopey who would always say no.
I guess Nopey passed away between the original series and the film. That’s my logical explanation for why Nopey is replaced by Lowbelly.
he's Grumby! HE'S GRUMBY DAMMIT!
After 3 Animat Seal of Approval movies in a row. Comes Gumby
I guess it's too slow to escape the Animat Seal of Garbage.
Yeah Matt I have always been an Aardman fan so I naturally go with Morph but I do like the SNL skits where Eddie Murphy plays Gumby those are absolutely hilarious
Some say the movie is still playing
AAAAAAAHHHHHIIIIIII'MMM READY!!!!
I'M READY, I'M READY, I'M READY READY READY!!!
My brother loves Gumby
I hate this UA-camr😑
Next review is James and the Giant Peach!
Ah yes, the “Make a dog cry and become rich” movie of the famous clay icon.
I only remember Gumby from the Screaming Skull episode of MST3K with “Robot Rumpus”
Also, since Gumby (and apparently everyone in this picture) can reconstruct himself, doesn't that beat the point of the blockheads to destroy him with a robot?
This movie has a superpower: Slowing Down Time
I didn’t watch the full movies definitely too slow
13:19 I've Been Betrayed!!!!!
Neat pfp
@@TM_Em0lga thanks
@@abnormand78 No problem
I can’t stop watching 8:11 lol
10:26 10:38 Professor Kapp and Lucky Claybert voice impressions.
It's sucks!! I actually wanted more Gumby and Pokey's falling out in the state of their friendships. Gumby going off to college by leaving his old friends behind and new friends coming to his life. But since it's a kid movie.. there is no mean spirited tone.
This movie exists?
How did I not know this?
I haven't Gumby the Movie but I should watch the tv series episodes before seeing the movie and I honestly couldn't believed you give this clay motion or stop motion animated film a Seal of Garbage. But I do respect your opinion and your first impression on Gumby.
I honestly can't wait to see your review James and the Giant Peach! 😃😀😄😁😊 👍🏻 💖❤
I remember gumby alot when I was a kid I think I need a movie a watch
I tend to prefer the earlier 50s/60s Gumby style, the 80s style that the movie uses (especially the weird thing they do to the voices of the main characters) was always a little off for me. The charm is in the imperfection of the clay above all else.
15:40 to 16:05 - I'd like to see AniMat write his own script for a Gumby movie 🎥
Dio Brando: Finally a worthy opponent our battle will be legendary
That's for kidnapped Gumby's friends and his dog too! Blockheads ruined their are adventure tries to copies these robot and eliminate Gumby.
I have a 2 questions:
1. Who was Arrow Releasing (the distributor of the film)?
2. What other films did they release?
"Can I play outside, mom?" "Did you drink your milk?"
Sorry, when viewing the '50s show, that phrase has been ingrained into my mind.
8:15 Alright now. Easy. Faze in the micropulse.
meh, I loved this when I was a kid. Claymation was rare in the 90's.
SNL Gumby: I understand that he is tearing this movie apart but I respect that because THIS WAS NOT THE MOVIE I REMEMBER DOING, DAMMIT!
