Red Wing 8138 Boot Care

The 8138 is the Briar Oil Slick Leather. To call it a “brown” is a crime against top quality leather. The leather has a rich red color, almost the color of prune juice.

Got mine, really nice quality and build , should last me years , one question do they loosen up across the width? I went a size down to avoid the heel slippage and they fit fine there , just a little tight across the toes at the moment

+AdeTheBloody Yes sir! I have a wide foot and it's a snug fit on a standard width shoe. Takes me a couple weeks for consistent wear to get them where I want them.
Also, different leathers seem to respond differently. The Red Wing green kangatan moc toe is pretty much a perfect fit for me, a size down, right out of the box. Whereas the brown moc toe and the 877s (the 8" boot) are considerably more snug.
Beckmans, for reference, are a much more snug shoe a full size down as well.

You should use red wing boot oil for the oil tanned boots otherwise they turn darker

Boot oil darkens the leather as much as mink oil (which contains silicone!). Red Wing's only care product that maintains the original color is the Leather Cream (Neatsfoot Oil). This product has been specifically created to moisturize, condition and prevent the leather from darkening. Excellent product. Give it a try!
