Great video and telling of a fascinating individual in history. Truly, King Henry V has been told over and over again. He still is the greatest king of the era, of dynasty and of two kingdoms. He could have transformed France as well as England for the better. A greater king has England not seen since King Henry V.
All our Royal leaders did was grow weaker to the point all they do is sign papers and be a tourist attraction. Their ancestors would be sad to see how low their descendants have sunk, being a Royal these days means very little...not even half as respected as it used to be.
@@anerdwithglasses7429 Sadly, I would agree the Royals of today have taken a deep decline from centuries past. There have been some notable monarchs after Henry V of England but they far between. One of the huge what-if’s not just of English but European history.. who knows what England and France would look like now had Henry V not died so young. Not only would he have sat on both thrones but also could’ve produced at least one other son..
Just found your channel and I'm now a subscriber. Keep up the great work. I was sure I wouldn't be adding more history channels to my list but here I am!
Such an outstanding king. In my opinion he's the best king we have ever had and he rivals Edward III's reign with his conquests in France. A paragon of English Kingship indeed however I've often seen people argue that because of his great achievements how could Henry VI fill a legacy like his father's without living in his shadow? Thanks for the video. He is a hero to me and I have learnt even more about my favourite historical figure 😀
Another great video 👍 I’ve often wondered what would have happened if Henry V had not died so young. He likely would have been king of France and if he could have raised Henry VI and also had more children, these may have prevented the wars of the roses. Also Catherine of Valois wouldn’t have been with Owen Tudor and all the implications of that. I don’t think there are many kings that had left such ineptness/weakness behind them or died at such a pivotal time in their reigns.
@@abdirahmansaed3657 Oh yeah, for sure. If he had just done *one* thing differently a lot of problems would be solved (not have a reputation for promising women to marry them as a means of getting in their pants, or just not marry Elizabeth Woodville. Heck, he could have just taken better care of his health so that his son comes to the throne as an adult rather than a vulnerable child)
that is a very interesting point, it would have been best for everybody if he had lived longer as a strong king for certain. there are many points when the war of the roses maybe could have been prevented and it is unfortunate that these warrior kings spend so much time in battle, shortening their lives, like Edward the Black Prince (fighting his father Edward III s endless wars over France ) who if he had lived longer would have been king himself, and maybe produced. some better heirs than his son Richard II I do think that Catherine de Valois' marriage to Owen Tudor was the best by-product of Henry V s death : I think the Tudor Dynasty was descended from other less incestuous bloodlines, a bit of sturdy welsh commoner stable hand blood ! The Tudors benefitted a lot from other common bloodlines, Margaret Beaufort descendant of Katherine Swynford, former governess, and Elizabeth Woodville, wife of Edward IV... I have always suspected that Elizabeth I inherited a lot of canniness, rationale, intelligence from these great women who helped their children SURVIVE the War of the Roses, and helped end the wars. It is also interesting to note that Henry V did not attainder, disinherit young boy Richard Duke of York, after his father's considered treasonous plot, and Richard Duke of York grew up to have a difficult relationship to troubled Henry Vi, who was threatened by him, so when the Duke of York inherited the rich mortimer estates , became powerful enough to fight for the throne, another important part of War of the Roses ( even though he was hugely land rich from the York estates, he was cash poor due to questionable financial decisions by his uncle, former duke.) Henry V s generosity to the young duke help set off events that threatened his own son's sign, albeit questionable reign since his son did have some mental health
if Lionel of Antwerp, grand uncle to Henry V, and more senior member of. the family than Henry s grandfather John of Gaunt, if he had not suddenly and strangely suspiciously died at an early age, the war might also been prevented as Lionel was unquestionably ahead of John and all heirs, second brother to Edward the Black Prince, the oldest. And what is more suspicious, Lionel died at his wedding festivities, to his second wife, on his way to producing more heirs, maybe a boy
Hello. I have a few ideas for future videos, and yes, the Anglo Saxons are included in that. However, I have not fully decided what I will pursue next at this point. Cheers!

There is a village named Agincourt in France but hundreds of kilometers away. The battle was fought near Azincourt. No idea why that typo wasn't corrected in the past 600 years but I'm thinking it's too late now.
I don't think the spelling or pronunciation was codified in either language at that time. In any case, the French of the 15th century was very different than the French of today, and the English of the 15th century was also nothing like modern English. Plus, a lot of archaic English exonyms actually *preserve* older spellings & pronunciations no longer used in the native language. Like, for example, John of Gaunt was born in modern day Ghent, so why don't we call him 'John of Ghent?' Well, b/c Ghent wasn't always called 'Ghent'--at some point in time it was pronounced closer to 'Gaunt' (accounting for vowel shifts, of course). I don't know enough about Azincourt specifically to say for certain, but if I had to guess 'Azincourt/Agincourt' referred just as much to the general area surrounding the village as it did to the village itself.

Hello. Thank you for the comment. I have heard this, but have also heard it be argued to be true. I will cite my source "Henry V, Playboy Prince To Warrior King, by Anne Curry, a professor of medieval history at the University of Southampton. In her book she writes "An incident which has achieved legendary proportions because of its splendid portrayal in Shakespeare’s Henry V is the dauphin’s sending of a gift of tennis balls to Henry. That this happened is almost certainly true, and shows the view the French had of Henry as an unimpressive and unseasoned military leader. The problem is dating the gesture. According to Thomas Elmham, while Henry was in Kenilworth for Lent, ‘the dauphin Charles [recte, Louis], son of the French king, wrote to him very jesting words and sent Paris balls with which he could play with his young men, as was his wont’. The king’s reply was that he ‘would very shortly send London balls, which would bring down their houses’, promising with his own hand to win the game and put the French to flight from the kingdom." Cheers
