Just no weaknesses to his game. Kicking, ball handling, running, tactical, organisational, defensive... all outstanding. Probably couldn't scrummage but that's about it!
The way he runs is just so balanced and effortless. Always carrying the ball in 2 hands, pumping little dummies and shifting the ball so that defenders are kept guessing. He really was the complete all-rounder.
@J G go talk that shit somewhere else if anything rugby us becoming more famous in more countries..russia,usa i can name many more that is getting into rugby now....its a way better sport than soccer and its football actually not soccer ...learn the proper words before talking shit
Lot of wicked loosies, wicked defenders have been on the end of it too. Harinorduqy, Hill, Elsom, Burger, Dusatoir, Tipuric. All been given his "don't argue"...!!💪
I’m 60 , followed rugby as long as I can remember, Best player I’ve seen when it comes to alround skills , some players are great in one or two areas , he could do it all. Brilliant in attack with his running and passing game , plus that underated fend off . Copybook tackler . Kicks from both feet in general play , brilliant goal kicker , field goals , and a great temperament . Met him , bloody nice fella to top it all off , so humble and down to earth .
Yeah I met him in.2007 after they lost to France what a guy just said that's life Never be another player like him and I've got my all blacks shirt signed and a selfie of me and Dan a day il cherish for the rest of my life
I mean what a player. He just made it all look so easy. He was an absolute joy to behold and it’s sad that his time is over. He gave me such fond memories, and I’m not even a New Zealander. How could you not like him, comes across as an absolute top bloke too.
@@ohwhye although to be fair, in terms of achievements DC has 2 Top 14s and a Top League title which McCaw doesn't have. Tough choice, but you'd have to say they're the best 2 players of the modern era.
His performances in the knockout stages of the 2015 World Cup were some of the best I've ever seen. France couldn't cope with him in the QF and he kicked brilliant, decisive drop-goals in the SF and final. Was lucky enough to go to that semi vs South Africa and see so many phenomenal players grace the pitch - Carter, McCaw, Nonu, Read, B Barrett, Habana, Pollard, Matfield. So many legendary players when I look back on it.
While all the other top outhalfs of the pro era were or are exceptional at some aspects Carter was exceptional at every aspect of 10 play. Won't be matched for a long time.
I remember Jonathan Davies, at the end of a man of the match performance against Wales, saying he was sick of giving him man of the match because he so often did it against Wales and going off this you can see why. Best player I’ve ever seen I think
More pace than I remember, great supporting lines after the pass. A lot of tens seem to wander off after shipping the pass, he seemed to always reapear in the right spot
As crazy as it seems I think Carter was actually slightly underrated during his career (even though he was seen by many as the best in the world haha). Looking back there is no question he's up there with the greatest to play the game.
There was a defensive play he made in the 2015 RWC that I think sets him apart from everyone else. In the semi against South Africa, Lambie kicked a penalty in the 69th min to bring SA within 2pts (NZ 20 - 18 SA). A minute later, NZ turned the ball over just outside the SA 22m line. Lambie then booted the ball down to inside the NZ 22m line with 4 chasers. The end result was Dan Carter calmly kicking the ball out for a lineout before anyone else could reach the ball. However, if you watch Dan Carter's movements just as the turnover was happening - they are incredible. He spotted the danger well before anyone else, anticipated Lambie's kick and got back with time to spare before all the other quicker players could. Whilst everyone else was reacting in the moment, he was thinking and movinh ahead of the game! Truly special player!
As much as I hate to admit growing up watching Wilkinson and having him as my role model in my early years playing rugby, DC is the complete package and is the identity of a 10. Its hard to see anyone come nearly as close as good Carter, definitely not my favourite but easily the best
The GOAT.. his performance against the Lions in 05 was mesmerizing. He was instrumental for us winning the 2015 World Cup.. His drop goal and that penalty that he kicked changed the momentum of that game..
I've been watching him since his debut for Canterbury in 2002 and I always remember him as a playmaker/ excellent kicker. I never realised that he scored that many tries and made so many runs
He scored a lot of tries & made a lot of good runs before he picked up that injury at the 2011 RWC, which slowed him down & took away his running game, but he still set up plenty of tries. If I remember correctly, he scored 29 tries in his first 8 years of Test Rugby, & he was only a reserve who played some of the tests for his first couple of years. Then didn't score a single try in his last 5 years.
Man his attacking game was excellent. He had a great eye for a gap, turn of pace and an excellent hand off. He was just such a complete player that people forget.
Without doubt the best 10 we have seen and are ever likely to see, could do it all, pass , kick , fend, offload, step , tackle and made it all look so so easy
You could play Dan Carter in a test match tomorrow (at 39) and he wouldn't look out of place. As a South African, I have to admit he's the greatest backline player I have seen in my life.
Actually met Dan Carter in 2015 the day before he and the AB played Namibia. I was up in London for an appointment, and on our way home Julian Save, Kieran Read, Dan Carter and Jerome Kaino were on the tube. Some of the most down to earth people, so happy to take pictures and talk; and my Dad actually took a photo of the four (as well as one of me with all four of them) which were posted on DC's social media. It was so surreal, and even though I'm not an outright AB fan it was so awesome
The greatest Rugby player of all times. A wizard. So blessed to have watched this mans whole career. Dan Carter evolved the gane from his position. Genius
That iconic right arm fend was a weapon on its own...let alone combined with his speed, footwork, and exceptional rugby vision. Truly a legend of the sport and the best number 10 rugby has ever seen.
I remember he was getting near Grant Fox's points record and Foxy was in commentary. As they're discussing it Foxy says tongue in cheek ' yea but he's been cheating, he's got 20 tries !'
I watched pretty much every All Blacks test for over 50 years, right up until NZ Rugby appointed an incompetent coach and all those high standards of excellence started collapsing. I haven't watched a test since but I am so happy I got to experience the era of ritchie McCaw and Dan Carter. Seeing this video is a stark reminder of days gone by and hopefully Roberstosn might start to restore what has been lost.
Didn't even needed to watch before hitting thumbs up. GOAT and I am so happy to have been lucky enough that he was playing while I could see it live. I appreciate so much his style because he was no freak as in much stronger or bigger or faster than the other players, it was his technique and intelligence in play that made the biggest impact.
At least in the pro era, I agree. It's had to judge previous eras when we didn't witness them. Here's an interesting question though, who would you put third? I might personally go with Stephen Larkham.
@@MichaelJohnson-ij5ei I'd consider Michael Lynagh, Sexton, Naas Botha perhaps. Andrew Mehrtens was a magnificent game General and had sensational vision and a top class kicking game but his defensive frailties can't be ignored.
The greatest ever flyhalf because he had no weaknesses. Great runner with ball in hand, could catch and pass and create tries, great in defence never a liability, great kicking off the tee and for territory to control the game and also showed he could get drop goals in tight games to secure points in the latter part of his career. As a 10 it literally can't get better. I can't fathom anytime his name isn't mentioned as one of the best 10s ever for as long as they play the beautiful game of rugby
There are not many 10's who have everything that Carter has! Skill, speed, technique, composure, both attacking and defensive awareness. His defence was just as good as his attack. Kicking also, I mean the guy is probably going to be the best number 10 of my lifetime
Simply the greatest ten ever no ifs ands or buts. He had it all on attack... speed, kicking and chipping, vision and an eye for the gap, passing, footwork to evade tacklers and a mighty fend and this reel shows that. What i feel it doesnt show was his rock solid defence. He was NEVER (as tends to happen a lot with 10s) a liability on defence. I guess playing a lot at 12 early helped with that.. He was not soft haha or one to shy away from the rough stuff on defence. He was good at everything. Easily the best 10 ever (a nod to Mr. Wilkinson for sure) and still has to be in the conversation for best player ever overall.
I have the upmost respect for Wilkinson, what he achieved in 2003 was truly remarkable but I can’t see how him, or anyone, can hold a torch to this man. No weaknesses in his game, barring the occasional injury. Master of all trades on the rugby pitch. A true master of the sport and in my mind, the greatest rugby player to ever play the game
And he did it all whilst enjoying a beer or ten after the game. All week long in his 20s. As we all did. He just enjoyed his rugby and I for one am glad he did.

Conrad Smith was a great player in his own right. Like, I get it if you see O'Driscoll as greater, more explosive, but you still got to see something not far off.
Smith was amazing but I'd go for BOD - very close but BOD could single handedly win games for Ireland against greater opposition and do the impossible with his stepping, kicking, DGs, and genius. This is coming from a massive Smith fan, another one of the greatest 13s to ever play.
As a Bok supporter, I absolutely hated Carter's guts, but this was always out of pure respect for his dominance on the pitch. Beating a team with Richie McCaw was hard enough; beating that same team with Carter running the show was near impossible.
It's the same reason All Blacks fans hated Joost Van der Westhuizen. He's my modern day Goat half back. Him and George Gregan! Hated both of them, because they were so good.
