Thanks for this video, Cole. I've also had moments recently where I've questioned whether what I'm doing is really meaningful, so it's inspiring to hear someone else can relate! For sure being a musician is a hard road, but I really appreciate the content you provide on a regular basis. Just pure love and enjoyment of music.

I left quite a long comment earlier today . . . but when I checked just now, I see it has disappeared!
I'm sure your recital will be a tremendous success, Cole, as you are a brilliant pianist and a consummate musician. (I'm just sorry that living 5,000 miles away, I won't be able to be there to hear you play in person . . . and the time difference means the live stream comes my way at 03.30 on Monday, which is just a little too early/too late for me!).
I'm not surprised that you have been feeling a little overwhelmed recently as this concert is a big deal for you and I know you will be satisfied only if you feel you have played the whole program at the level you always aspire to reach: virtuosic artistry. But you will deliver, because you always do! The Conservatory advertises "World-class halls for world-class talent", which means you should be right at home because your are certainly a world-class pianist (and the Caroline H. Hume Concert Hall looks to be a magnificent venue for you - so the audience is in for an amazing treat with the wonderful program you will be presenting!).
Those times when we are under the greatest pressure in our lives is when we become prone to question our life choices. Yes, becoming a musician was the hard option for you - but it was your heart's desire and, as you remark, it really has been all for the best! Look at the success of this channel - a following of nearly 10,000 (that's a pretty big audience!). I can tell you that your uploads have enriched my life enormously: it is always such a joy to hear you play and your erudite commentaries (always so well balanced and delivered with such endearing charm) are weekly offerings not to be missed. Thank you for sharing your talent and humanity with us. I won't wish you luck because you will make your own luck in life. A triumph awaits for certain: B R A V O !

This was inspiring Cole, thanks for sharing, it is nice to hear your process for preparation. And the sharing a bit about a day in the life of a musician is interesting. All jobs have stress, none are really secure and most do not allow you to live your dream - thanks for making these videos, I appreciate your efforts and contribute on Patreon so you can keep up the channel.

I appreciate your honesty and wish I could have heard your recital.
I quit being a professional musician when I had kids to become a stay-at-home dad. I’ve made the best music of my life since then, though unfortunately much of my collaborative music-making stopped in March 2020. I hope to return to that some day.
Keep finding your way. As long as the work you do is sincere and meaningful, you will be happy in the end.

We suffer more in imagination than in reality! It will be fine Cole, don't worry, have faith, believe in yourself. We are more often freightened than hurt. I'm sure your performance will be great! Such stress is not just reserved for musicians, it happens to everyone in all kinds of situations, you are not alone. Unfortunately, we cannot put time on a rubber band and stretch it out, nevertheless; you can do it! I love that you are organizing a (livestream) concert for all your fans! That is amazing. I will follow and support you, because your work and music on this channel are very valuable to me.

Take as much time as you need, Cole!
Working full time as a musician is very tough and can be very draining at times.
As long as you love what you are doing and happy with it, just like you said- take some time off. Can't earn all the money in this world; especially, when it doesn't make yoy happy.
Best wishes to your preparation to your concert. I'm sure you'll do amazingly!

I loved hearing your thoughts (that you modestly call ramblings)! I think a lot of us are interested in you as a musician and a person in general, and not just the music you present. In fact, they are inseparable. I would be more than happy to see more videos like these, as well as practice vlogs! The way you spoke about what needs to work and how you will approach it was inspiring, and would be very interested in seeing you in action. Good luck with everything!

@@TheIndependentPianist Yes please do, and though I can't speak for everyone, I would say not to worry about filming conditions and post casually. I believe you have this sincere communicative presence that would always come through, regardless of the quality of the recordings/editing! We already all appreciate how much work you put into your regular videos!

I resonate with every word you just said, being a collaborative pianist myself, I also find that after too many sight-reading sessions my own solo playing is oftentimes less profound.

Thanks for the update Cole - indeed getting your work/life balance right is tricky. I think it’s especially hard for musicians because they invariably have to have multiple streams to generate work and income. So lots of competing priorities. But you are doing the right thing of course to reprioritise. Fortunately it seems to me you have the talent to usefully use your week of intense practice! I look forward to the concert. Don’t forget, this is your first public presentation of this music - it won’t be the last and it won’t be your last thoughts on these pieces.
The feeling of being unprepared is a bit unpleasant ! Tomorrow I’m performing (singing not piano) in the Brahms liebeslieder and really, it was only our dress rehearsal 2 days ago at which I’d say we were more or less performance ready ! That’s also leaving it a bit late … amusingly, I have dreams where I’m the piano soloist in a concerto or something, and Im totally unprepared. Usually I can’t play the piece at all but somehow I’m supposed to perform it. I have played a little chamber music in public as an amateur but that’s all. This must be a very deep seated insecurity in me !!

Cole dont worry you have time. I think you need to get as much sleep as you can. You understand these pieces conceptually very well. Im sure the concert will be a great success. I know this sounds weird but I started going to the Gym and I started taking creatine monohydrate but as completely unexpected side effect it really improved the stamina and raw power of my technique so much it was really really a shock. The only thing I can compare it to is when you've had a drink and then you go to the piano and you feel like 'wow im powerful'. Its like that but im completely sober.

    • @TheIndependentPianist
      @TheIndependentPianist  8 місяців тому

Very interesting! I do the gym but not creatine, maybe I’ll give it a look.

Don't worry. It's normal to feel shaky ten days before the performance. The run-through was a good diagnostic that will help you focus your time and energy where you need to.
