Folks, Chris is the very, very best painting instructor I've ever seen (on or off the web). If you want to learn--Chris is the man. So clear, so concise, no extra chatter. Everything he says is relevant. I now look no where else. When I get my XXXX together, I will become a formal student with him.
The thing being taught here is how to copy photographs with paint. Painting from life is a deep meditation. This guy is a commercial artist like me , but he's mistaken rendering for art making. the Internet is full of this gimmick. Poetry remains difficult
@@wonderrob3225 I respect your opinion in this matter, but I offer a further thought. One must understand a fair amount of practical theory before one can realistically expect to enter the poetic deep meditation of art making. Similarly, in piano, we must understand the mechanics of playing and the theory of music before we can actually create. So in this respect, I deeply appreciate Chris's perspectives.
Chris I have found your channel and I have been so much happier. I’m finally starting to get back into my passion and it has been so stress relieving. You are a true master at your craft, and you explain things in a way I understand. Thank you so much for taking the time to put up all this for random strangers. You are awesome man!
Great points Chris! Especially about the reflected light. So hard to dial that in sometimes but remembering that it’s still within the shadow group helps!
you're a great teacher! i just came from your linseed oil vs paint thinner video and both of these videos have been SOOO helpful to me c: i'm a beginner artist in general but wanted to try oil painting but everytime i tried to watch a video it was v complicated or expecting you to have previous painting knowledge so tyyy
Thank you for sharing your knowlege and it us. It really helps mo to learn oil painting. I started oil painting because I have a subject/class which is life painting in my art school.
Love this video.❤️ At last , it is uploaded after two weeks. I was waiting for a new video. Again, you updated an awesome and super helpful video. Thanks Chris.👍👍
I’m starting my oil painting (water soluble) journey and your channel has helped me sooo much. I can’t wait to take your online courses :) Your UA-cam has helped me so much already!
Excellent presentation, Chris! I'm getting back to aviation art and acrylics just won't work for the cloud backgrounds that I'll need to do. Looking forward to starting water soluble oil painting, using acrylics for the aircraft in the foreground......
Hi Chris. It is nice how you use instructions from master artists and make a video for us to use thanks. Also I like how you credit your mentors. This is the basic instructions I recently learned too from a master artists workshop. Let's continue our painting journeys together. Also Chris... can you show us how to use a black and white reference picture and make a colour oil painting?
I've been trying to learn oil painting for a long time now. Even today, I tried to paint something, but it looks quite dull and doesn't have the contrast I'd like it to. I'll try to fix it. But right now, I'm thinking I'll start a new project where I paint a tiny thing every day for two weeks. I'm on vacation, so I have the time. I feel a lil scared and jaded but here goes
Chris, I've started painting again after decades and your videos have been SO helpful. I am currently working on a landscape with buildings. I'm stuck trying to figure out how to paint straight lines onto a wet canvas. Is there a trick to this? One building has lots of windows and while I don't want to paint all the details of the windows, I do want the general frames to be clean lines. Do you have a video about how to paint glass or windows or lines or straight lines or buildings or pigs? Just kidding about the pigs.
If you really really need straight lines, I would recommend not doing wet-on-wet. That way, you can use guides or masking tape. Otherwise, it's just a matter of mastering fine motor control, which just comes down to practice.
Chris thanks for this nice video again. Last time i came with a recommendation years too late, so here is the opportunity to do it up to date: There is an app at lest for android phones called notan app. It simpifies your pic by choice in two, three or four bright / dark values. It is a good support for getting uses to see the shapes, not the objects (ass you stressed). Your comments hit the nail again.
So happy I found your channel! I’m super new to oil painting. Do you recommend any ways to frame work done on canvas pad? If that makes sense? 😂 after watching your videos I don’t want to go anywhere else for advice!
Hey Chris - in some of your videos you’re wearing gloves. After I started painting I realized why. : ) Is there a certain kind that doesn’t make your hands sweat? - Great videos. Incredibly helpful. Thanks man.
In certain ways, it could but oil paints do not dry as fast, you can literally work on them for a few days, which is why i think artists like them, but for acrylics, the paints aren't as... Malleable as oil paints if that makes sense. But starting with base colors and working outward could work on acrylics if you play around with it (it should be noted I do not do things the most normal way when it comes to art so take this in whatever way you think works best for you)
Hi Chris, First of all : THANKS for your always exciting and VERTY pragamatic videos. I'd like to buy MacPherson and Ian Roberts' books but from France the transport fees are as high as the books' ones. Do you know French distributors who deliver theses editions ? Thanks in advance.
is there a programe not photoshop as that expensive that can do the squinting for me of photograph, so that can see different value shapes, im finding it difficult to see it on photo, tried black and white but that is for variations of black, hope for some color to see, I have tried nortonise but its small on mobile phone any for windows. thanks.
Hello my dear friend. Thanks for the great video you shared with us. very interesting video .Continue to publish beautiful videos still I can't wait to see them . Thanks for sharing please stay connected plz.. 💖.,❤️,.💗 💝💞💕,
Question 🙋🏼♀️ my husband and I changed our house to a “clean” home for fertility reasons. I had to have 2 endometriosis surgeries and taking it all really seriously. I wonder about if I can oil paint now and if I get pregnant? If so any particular brands to get or types of paint that would be safe for me in the US? Thank you!
Hope you don't mind if I reply? I just switched over to water soluble oil paints (holbein duo) to avoid using solvents. I love my new paints! Avoid the toxic colors such as the cadmiums, cobalt, lead (some paint brands still use lead in their "flake white"). I was able to put together my favorite pallette using non-toxic pigments. It's totally doable to go toxin free!
@@rush2ady would you mind sending on here for he specific prints/colors in your collection with item numbers maybe? It’s overwhelming looking online, I’m getting a lot to pop up! If you could do something like that I would so appreciate that!! 🎨
@@brooke850 I use 2 different limited palettes, then add in colors from there if I'm inclined. In the Holbein Duo paints these are what I use (every brand of paints is different, the important thing is the actual color, not the name). European palette (moody and atmospheric color mixes): Cadmium Yellow Light Hue, Alizarin Crimson, Prussian Blue. American palette (the classic red, blue, yellow primaries): Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Red Deep Hue, Ultramarine Light, + Viridian green (viridian is the perfect complimentary to cad red). Bright palette (though not well balanced as it's on the cool side. It makes gorgeous secondaries): Lemon Yellow, Rose Violet, Turquoise Blue. I use Titanium white for lightening (strong opacity) and zinc white (less opaque). Dioxazine violet added to colors makes a rich cool dark, raw or burnt umber added makes nice warm darks. I never use "black". Phthalo green makes stunning greens, especially with lemon yellow. I've been experimenting with adding the European + Bright palette, I really like the colors together. Using the turquoise to lighten prussian blue, for example, instead of using a white to lighten it, adds so much drama. As I go along I might purchase some colors that are just nice to have handy, like Indian Yellow, Sap Green, and Cerulean Blue. Try to have a good understanding of your limited palette before adding stuff in. Also, the yellow hues don't tint as strongly as true cadmium yellows, so you'll need to be aware of that when color mixing. You'll need way more yellow than you expect.

I can t believe how this video came out exactly when I was searching in oil painting. Just perfect timing

Dividing the painting into squares is genius
Ever since I started doing this I began to draw without tracing
I think this is really going to help with my landscapes. Thanks Chris

Could you do a video on how to improve art skills immensely? I’m in love with your videos they’re easily to grasp and understand.

does this also apply in acrylics?

What you use initially ,is it burnt umber with thinner???? to block the areas on canvas
Are the McPherson books useful for non-landscape painters?
loved your advice thankyou

Do you just keep that thinner in the room all the time?
