⭐ About Travel Beans:
Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Alex & Emma, a British couple who have been exploring the world together for over 10 years - from backpacking to vanlife:
2012/13: We both embarked on our own solo backpacking trips through Southeast Asia, where we would eventually meet at a hostel in the mountains of Thailand and begin traveling together. After a year and a half of backpacking around Southeast Asia & Australia, we returned home and to the corporate world!
2015: Travel Beans was born and we filmed our first videos on a road trip around Europe with friends! This was our biggest trip yet.. and you can go back and watch the entire adventure because we filmed ALL of it! This trip took us through Russia, Mongolia & China, on the longest railway journey in the world. Followed by highlights such as staying on a local island in the Maldives for a month, going on safari in Sri Lanka, couchsurfing & hitchhiking in Korea, seeing the snow monkeys in Japan, island hopping in the Philippines, trekking 60km through the centre of Myanmar, exploring the Indian Himalayas, and checking out some of the incredible US National Parks.
2016: Despite an unbelievably memorable year and a half of travels, which we were incredibly grateful to have had the privilege to experience.. we found ourselves in New York City, battling depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on.
2017: After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle. We left the UK with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a continuous travel lifestyle happen! We both got online English teaching jobs to be able to fund our travels and to keep creating videos. We can't quite believe that our younger selves decided to take this plunge but we are so grateful they did as we are still on this journey today!
What now?
Over the years, we've discovered that we LOVE road trips and even decided to renovate our very own little VWT4 van into a campervan to be able to enjoy vanlife and spend more time on the road. We are now the proud owners of 2 awesome little campers - one based in the UK and one that we keep in the USA. You'll often find us using one of these vans to explore Europe and North America. If you enjoy this kind of content we'd recommend checking out our Italy Road Trip series, USA vanlife series and our Japan in a Tiny Van series as well as our UK vanlife content.
Our time spent overcoming depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. We love sharing the highs and lows of our trips through our videos and hope to spread a little positivity and light to all of the beautiful people who take the time to tune in and watch each week!

While I can understand Emma’s hesitation about letting go of this van because she customized it, a different camper van with the necessities in it will make your ‘family’ trips much more enjoyable. Two things you might want to consider having in the van is a toilet and a shower. It will help with bath time an potty training when you’re out traveling the world with baby Noah.
You don’t need a shower or a toilet for a kid. Potty training toilets for toddlers are quite small and portable, and any plastic tub will do for washing the babe.
As a fulltime nomad for 5 plus yrs, a senior, a mother of three, Nana of three, I feel fully qualified to tell you, no need for the toilet and shower. Unless you do van life, know van life, not sure how you can advise what can and can't be managed. When it is what it is, you do what you do. Nothing is impossible. If you need all home comforts, cannot bear to rough it, this life is most definitely not for you.
They have a compost toilet in the van and a portable shower. A washing up bowl is large enough to bathe a baby.
@@lesleyhughes3174 We are doing a build on a Promaster right now - high roof, 159wb extended length and are putting in a toilet and a 30x32 shower. Because we can. They will fit. We can "rough it" just fine. Did so on our northern Michigan off grid property over 20 years. Still have an outhouse. Lived with no electricity except occasional generator until we put in a solar system 4 years ago. We are civilized and would rather be able to shower in the dead of winter and drop a deuce in our own "home" with no lingering smell, thanks. Unless space or money is preventing you, why wouldn't you?? LOL Otherwise, I would take the three bathrooms out of the house and make even bigger family room and bedrooms.
@@Anberel A nice size sink and/or a tub would do fine for kid. Nice for parents to have a sink though. A toilet inside is quite nice too but not needed for a kid in diapers.
As a Senior Citizen who lived in Europe in my youth and traveled extensively there as an adult, I now depend on the Internet to see the world because of health issues. I so look forward to your unique travelogues every Monday. The two of you manage to be informative and hilarious at the same time. Of course, the little one (Noah) is "icing on the cake," always adorable....Be the Man and regale us with some more, oh so naughty, nicknames for Emma. We who follow you expect nothing less!...Love and (virtual) hugs from the West Coast of the United States--Portland, Oregon. (Just turned 73 but there's a 20-year-old inside my body.)
If it makes you feel better, I've started living in a suv last year and I've just had to make a bed that turns into a double bed so one of my 3 mini clones can come and stay with me at a time. Its cramped, but they bloody love it. They don't like going back home to mummy 🤭. Next year, I'll be able to take all 3 when I get a vw camper. Awesome video. You have a beautiful baba beanie. Keep the van lol. Have😅 you seen the beds you can get for the cab? You can get a single and a bunkbed.
Add a tent to your set up. That way You can set up a pack and play . An inflatable rectangular swimming pool makes a cool play yard for a baby . Throw in some padding , some colorful toys.
Great suggestions. Also nice to take a wagon along when the child is older.
Add a rock & roll bed in the back with seatbelts for a baby seat & a double passenger seat then there are child cot beds that fit across the front seats in a vw. For when he gets older there are child safety nets for the pop top bed (our daughter is 5 & now sleeps up top with a safety net) also add a awning for extra living space. Jobs a goodun 👍
I love the idea of holding off and using the money saved to rent cool spaces or campervans! What ever you guys do, I am sure it will be great!
Sell it to someone who will love it just like you did! and give them that fun adventure as a single person or couple and buy and embrace a family van. Its okay. You will truly love it! U both rock!
Totally agree! A part of becoming parents is accepting that you have to let parts of your old life go, and embrace the new with open arms. I hope they can make travelling work, I can see it being easy with a baby, but getting more difficult when he becomes a toddler.
Living in a van with a child does get easier, you know! We were VW campers (Kombis) before we had a family, and we kept on camping through both girls' babyhood and until they were about 7 and 10. At that point we sold it because it needed a LOT of body work (rust) that we felt we couldn't afford. The family who bought it fixed it up and camped in it for many years with THREE kids. We became tenters until after the girls grew up and left home. But I sometimes still regret selling that old camper and wonder if we could have made it work longer if we'd tightened our belts. Just like you, Emma, just going into the camper had a calming effect on me, and I still remember the comforting smell of it.
It definitely helped that the camper was equipped with seatbelts in the rear. When the girls were babies, they slept in a portable cot, so they couldn't roll off the bed in the night. When after they were a bit older, they slept together downstairs and the grownups went up top.
In our 50s, we bought another VW camper, this time a Westfalia, because sleeping on the ground was getting hard for our aging bones, and by then we were living in a rainforest, so we really appreciated being under cover. That worked until we were in our 70s and the aging bones wanted more sleeping room than the Westfalia had, so we gave it to the daughter who had small kids herself.
Aww, do you know I have two babies who are 30 and 28, we camped with them from when they were both tiny….I love what you are both doing. We have a old Italian van now, but our babies are too into their own lives to camp with us now, we love using it still. You two remind me that I may have Grand babies of our own and we will most definitely introduce them to the wonderful world of being in the outside, one way or another.🥰
We travelled in a VW campervan for several months when our baby was little. It got harder when he started to get mobile because he was no longer happy to sit in his car seat for long journeys, so we had to stop at that point. Do it now, don't wait!
Loved today's video. If you want to hold on to your little van, how about buying a tiny caravan to tow behind as your bedroom and possibly have a shower room in it as well, to make your life a little easier with a newborn. You can leave the caravan at a campsite and go exploring for the day using your van.
I like that idea. Best I've seen yet!
I had actually wondered if the van had enough power to tow around their small car to do the exploring, but I think I like your idea better 🙂
I agree with this, tow your bedroom or use tents.
Change out the bed for a bench seat which can be a bed if needed. Seat baby and an adult there and use it as a day van.
Keep the lovely kitchen/dining/seating area that Emma built and just sleep elsewhere.
Our T5, George, is now 15, the kids are 18 and 14 years old. I can't part with George either!
We used the bench seat bed when the second child was small enough to sleep with us, plus a cab bed over the front seats. Since then we just throw people out into tents!
Your little Boy is so precious, beautiful and lovable ,
We have a 1981 VW Vanagon weekender. Not a camper, only the back seat folds into a bed. My husband and our 3 kids did a 3 week camping trip across the US. We set up a tent and slept in it. One night it was raining so hard the dome tent folded in half. We needed up putting down the backseat and my husband, the 2 oldest kids and I squeezed onto it and the little guy slept on the middle seat. We made it work. I wish we had your camper.
I think you should keep you van and modify it so your bed would convert to a seat for travel that you can mount seat belts for the baby seat. But convert easily at night for sleeping. Maybe you could find a used VW van seat for this. Ours was a rear engine van. You could build a platform for that portion of the bed and have storage under it for extra baby stuff and have the bench seat with seat belts in front of it that would convert to the rest of your bed. You could leave your bedding on the back part during travel then just pull it over the converted seat at night.
We also had a 1971 VW Camper that had a cot that went over the front seats and the 5 of us travelled in it for awhile. Had the pop top also.
Now my husband and I travel in a 2000 Class A diesel pusher.
Can’t wait to see what you decide to do. Good luck.
Oh god the newborn cry. If you know, you know. It gets better guys. I promise! Thanks for the video.
I literally cannot get over how beautiful Emma is. Even just waking up. Wow. ❤. Noah is sooo freaking adorable. ❤. Come to Canada. We would love to have you here. 🎉
Emma is stunning! Alex is handsome! And,, Noah is precious 😊. PS my daughters nickname was 'pumpkin butt'😅
Back in 1979 my Dad came out of the RAF, we all travelled around Canada, America & Mexico for 6 months in a VW campervan, my Mum, Dad, me at 3 years old & my 2 brother's were 13 & 15 years old!! We all managed to fit 😍 And my parents are still married, their 60th Wedding Anniversary this year. 💕
he can interrupt at anytime. what a sweet video. thank you! Get thee to Norway! we made a mistake and thought that 5 days in Norway ( Bergen and the Hardangerfjord) would be enough but oh, no. it was so amazing and majestic and constantly took my breath away. now I know I have to go back.
Great video! One suggestion from the US - double check car seat requirements for whichever states you want to visit - they can be quite restrictive. For example in California "Children under the age of 2 must ride in a rear-facing car seat in the back seat until they reach either 40 pounds or 40 inches in height or more."
And I think it's wonderful that your van traveling even with a baby you are showing him marvelous miraculous wonderful things you're teaching him at a young age he's going to be so smart and learn so much don't listen to anybody if they tell you any different or anything negative about camping in a van and traveling with their baby you are doing amazing keep it up!!!!!!
I’ve left campsites at 1-2 am to get one or the other kid to stop screaming. Fun times.
My first born was fussy in the evenings and required a car ride, while I sang a German lullaby to get him to sleep. I don't know what it is about babies and car rides. I agree with others who have mentioned that traveling is easier while babies are young and not mobile. You just have to stop to feed them and diaper them at regular intervals but they seem to enjoy sleeping in their car seat.
I used a swing to calm my son. We took it everywhere. They make smaller ones now that would fit better in your camper van. We used rechargeable batteries to power it. Saved lots of money on regular batteries as he used it all the time. Made it easy to be able to take a shower or cook dinner as he was very content napping in it.
I looked up used van seats for your van here in the states and they are available and come with the seatbelts built in, so you would just bolt the seat to the floor and belt the car seat to the chair. They were $250-550 per seat USD . So I’m sure you could probably find one in the UK also.
Good luck.
Emma, don't worry about the hiking with you "mom body". The more you do it, the more it will come back, and you are still very freshly post partum. (One of my favorite memories was sitting on the side of a trail in Banff just feeding my 3 month old, I had to give up as I couldn't manage any further and it was an out and back, and my group met me as they came back out. But I chatted with so many wonderful people passing by, and it was so nice to just sit quietly and nurse in nature; even if it was kind of a bummer to give up on the hike.)
Fun watching your naiveness. Really not an insult. I love you guy and know you showing you baby go to sleep vehicle, you are doing everything you can for your baby❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤u r good mommy & daddy.❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hi guys!! Keep the van!! You will be happy you did in the long run! And just like you say! When he gets a bit older, it will be perfect, especially with the bed above! Also, Emma put her whole soul into making it the special van that it is, and I truly think you'd all be heartbroken for a long time to come, if you got rid of it. Maybe use it, and then store it when you want to go for longer excursions? Rent another larger van for those said journey's?! Anyway you look at it, be safe, have so much fun, and thank you for filming for us all!! Love from Oregon, USA.
Shetland & Orkney, Norway, Canada, are all amazing & great for Van life, you’d love them! Noah is simply gorgeous 😊
We traveled with our 2 boys in a Volkswagen Rialta. We all loved it it had four captains seats (the front two rotate to face the rear) and the back two fold flat to make either one queen bed, or two twin beds. The rear has a dinette that seats 4 and also folds into a queen bed. It has a cleaver wet bath, as well as a galley kitchen. It was the perfect small camping van for a family.
That was funny when you said my granddad's combover in the wind about the trees LOL you're hilarious 😆 I love y'all's videos and I wanted to tell y'all that y'all are wonderful parents also good job Mama and Daddy 😀🌄
History Underground did a walking tour of those parks was really cool. Baby Noah is precious!
I absolutely think you can manage in the van as a family. You just need to swap out the bed and you’re ready to go. I think your van is worth the ‘upgrade’. So many memories in that van ❤
We call our firstborn son Pølle (poopers) and he LOVED Celine Dion through the first year of his life 😅 lots of dramatic drives on the road with Celine blasting to get him to sleep :)
Thank you so much for a wonderful time on your channel and a Big congratulations on becoming parents ❤
You both are so sweet and funny! 🤗🤗🥰🥰Noah is just precious! I can’t wait to see the places you will go and the memories you will build. I hope you travel next to Iceland 🇮🇸. 🤩🤩😍😍
Hello Travel Beans. When you come back to the United States, please check the vehicle child seating requirements which may vary from state to state and may be much more restrictive than in the UK. Be prepared for the regulations to be specific and costly to meet regarding equipment.
I think your videos need more Noah! He is cute as the dickins and his cooing and babyness is so adorable.
Hi Beans!! Can’t wait till you’re back in the states and Eric and Alison meet Noah!
I don’t really care where you go …… I think GB for now …Until seat sorted…..just watching you puts a big smile on my face…… somewhere warm and sunny….I live in Greece and September is a bit cooler just make sure you have a mosquito net for little Noah a sun hat and sun cream…….❤😊 xx
Good morning Alex and Emma and Noah I love how ya'll got everything squared away I do think you might need a bigger van in where you are living I can't wait to see every single trip where you end up going
You three are absolutely delightful! Such a joy to watch. You are both soo natural on screen. To answer your question, boy racers exist in New Zealand & we call them boy racers too.
Change the bed set up so that you can move the mattress back and raise one side of the bed board into a chair add cushions and seat belt and at night it can be brought back down to be a bed again...think Noah said I love you so cute
I love the foldable loveseat!
Brean Down is one of my favourite places in the world! I spent every childhood holiday there and loved the fort.
My husband and I were just remarking over the weekend while we were camping as a family of three that it was so much harder when are almost 14 year old was a baby and toddler. We did it, it was hard but worth it. On Saturday night, we were treated to watching a camp fire that our son built and maintained. Sadly, the time from when he was a baby to now has flown by. It might seem like a long time before you can properly use the UK camper van, but that time will fly by. Enjoy the travels as a family of 3.
As the saying goes: with children, the days are long but the years are short. (My two are 23 and forever 18 now)
My son and his family have a VW camper with pop up similar to yours. They manage fine, they do have a double swivel front seat that takes a car seat and a rocker bed/ seat in the back that can also takes 2 car seats. The little ones who are now 2 and 5 sleep up top and they do have an awning to give more space. Family camping in a VW is perfectly possible!
Great video as always! I'd say change your UK van as soon as funds allow. Your emotional attachment to the van is understandable but as things aren't really working logistically already sell and get something where you've got more space and a proper seat option for Noah. Keep up the good work!
BABY SLEEP REMEDY INSTEAD OF DRIVING….We don’t have any children, but another UA-cam family we watch in the States (Tim Tracker) just welcomed their 2nd. I believe the mom uses a contraption called a Rockit, that vibrates the carrier and simulates car motion. It could save you some petrol dollars, and sanity.
Rockit USB Rechargeable 2.0. Baby Rocker Rocks Any Stroller, Bassinet, Pushchair or Buggy. Comes with Rotating Bracket.
It was designed in the UK
Come back to the US! Noah will just LOVE it! And so will we!
"you get the idea I'm running" absolutely hilarious coz sometime I do laugh when I see people running on their videos because I think to myself now they have run back and pick the camera up 🤣🤣
Put a canopy on the side....you can stretch out under it
Totally understand Emma’s hesitance to sell the VW van seeing that she built the interior (and you have certainly learned your lessons from being scammed). However, you have considerations with Noah until he gets bigger.
Just love how you talk about things and the pet names you have for each other and Noah. Shows how much you love each other. Love it.
You Beans are so funny. Good to see the Three Bean’s. ❤❤❤
You baby is so precious, enjoy every minute they grow up so fast❤
You look more in love than ever! That board game bit was so sweet. "Our son is in our campervan" ❤
Can I just say how much I appreciate that you haven’t turned your channel into just an endless montage of your baby. It’s great that you’re sharing the challenges of traveling as new parents, but it’s still about the travel. Too many channels I follow have been ruined for me because they stopped showing regular content and it became about everything their baby is doing.
I get your point. I on the other hand love those channels :P The only reason I watch Flying the Nest is coz of their kid.
What other channels do you know of who were travel channels and then they had babies? May like to give them a try :)
Have you thought of bolting seatbelts to the floor between/behind the front seats? You could belt his car seat there at the floor while still being able to reach him.
@@noornoornoor23 Raya and Louis!
Love you .... three . You are so positive and happy together. Just a treat to watch . Lovely . ♡♡
.
He is just the cutest thing!
Emily, your body will go back to before. Your strength will come back 😊
Noah is adorable!! They grow up so fast, before you know it, he will be racing you to the camper van for a trip! Our grandson is six and as soon as he gets out of school for the summer, we are taking him on a weekend camping trip. He loves it so much, sometimes when he’s at our place, he and I will sleep in our trailer in the backyard for a little backyard camping adventure 🥰
Love seeing you out and about and tiring new adventures!
My son was an earwig.... Love the fun and the honesty....But health warning!!! apart from smells and sounds and gorgeous peace when child one is asleep ... an' oh yes... driving is a rocking lullaby but when one stops!!! Life starts again... Seriously though, I really REALLY admire your efforts...and determination. Your travel trip to your destinstion has just started...... there is a life of unexpected unplanned unprepared for challenges ahead... I like the one where the young one has samples of food to try and they throw them acroos the room... whoops van ... but... little Noah wouldn't do that, would he!?
I really love the fact that we are going to be able to see you guys grow as parents on your videos. We will be apart of Noah's journey as well which is awesome. I think it would be awesome if you guys got a new van but one that Emma builds again. Dont get a ready made camper for the UK but if you got a sprinter and Emma could slowly build it out she would be able to express her creative side and make it very custom for your needs. It could be a side project on the videos like her solo video that she did. Maybe once every few weeks we could get a build update video. That would be really cool I think :)
You guys never fail to make me smile. We traveled the U.S. in an RV with two kids and it was always a work in progress, constantly changing. It's amazing how quickly kids, and their needs, change.
As far as the "Pushed him out" leverage, I'm 54 and my mother still uses it....
Add the bench seat I have one in my van you can fit a full size mattress on top of it , what we do is use the fold up table to hold up the end of the mattress and then we can use the folding seat for the little ones, and it is very comfortable.
You have never been so beautiful ...
as a couple. The gift of life radiates from you.
Noah is so precious!! Glad to see you back in the van.
Love this lil family🥰🥰🥰
So happy for you - wonderful to see the little man
So lovely to see the 3 of you enjoying the camper 😍 big love for getting out there x
Great to see you three again 😊😊❤
Congratulations on your beautiful new baby, Emma and Alex from Travel Beans!❤🎉🎊
Love the banter and chatting! 🎉❤🎉
Hi Beans! If you like exploring old war bunkers, next time you're in the US, go to Port Townsend, WA. There are bunkers there right on the beach that you can explore also!! I used to live in that area and have gone multiple times!
Love how nothing stops you . Great video as always 😀
We have 1973 Westfalia bay window that I restored, It is now part of the family. Our 2 kids have grown up with it. both kids a bit scared to go in roof till they were 6-7 but we have a cab bunk/hammock that goes over front seats and it was ideal even from a baby we put the crib on it. I'm sure they do a T4 equivalent now, try NLAVW or JK We found it easy till they got a bit older/bigger then we invested in an awning. It would be a shame to get rid of your van, I couldn't and now our eldest is driving he wants to use it. So many great memories made. good luck with everything.
Great video , made me happy. Thank you.
I would love to see yalls "planning and preparation" for trips! How you choose flights & how/much what you bring and why you do it this way and how much space you mentally leave for changing the plans as things come up.. how many specific sights & places and such. None the less, I love what yall do and share! Yall are a joy and inspiration! Thanks for sharing what yall do!
Good seeing you all and Noah is so cute. Welcome back beautiful family. Love you guys
Love how you both just get on with it ❤❤
Cutest little guy ever. Safe travels little family.🤗❤️
Love you guys! You're awesome, humorous, interesting and everything else good! Beautiful family, you are! ❤️ Safe travels!
You two are doing so well with Noah ! New babies are fabulous but a full time job too! Well done both ! XXX
Noah looks very relaxed and happy! Must have an awesome mum and dad!
You Guys are so much fun.
You guys care so cute. Thank you for sharing.
You guys are just 🥺🥺🥺best wishes and biggest hugs
I'm so happy to see my favorite beans again!
Major props for to Mr. Bean for his work going back and forth to set up great shots!
YOU GUYS ARE SO AWESOME AND YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME TOGETHER
New Van=New Memories.....Version 2 Travel Beans.
You guys make this old man smile. Love your channel.
OMG Noah is such a smiley, joyous precious one!
Keep it - keep it - keep it! Love your van and love your videos! You guys are the best and Noah is so blessed! 💕
Well done for trying out van life with scrumptious Noah! A couple of channels I dip into are Glyn Hudson (new baby in a Nissan NV200, recently!) and Life is Vanderful in Aus. They started van life with a toddler (and deserve many more supporters considering the work they’ve put into their channel). Their van tour vid tackles where their daughter sleeps (not where they’d planned!) and the third travel seat for her. Hope that helps! Onwards and upwards, hopefully with some sleep! Laura, Warks UK
This is bringing back loads of memories. As I spent a lot of summers holidaying in Brean.
If you come to Quebec Canada, promise you would have an amazing time. Would be happy to show you around. So many travel bloggers miss Quebec because of the language but if you come down you will find so many things to do in this province. If you want more info reach out. Would be more than happy to help you plan or answer any questions you may have. Good Luck With Noah!! And yes one day, you will be able to sleep in again. Hang in there!
Can’t wait to see you guys in the van in North America!!
So glad you are getting out. Noah is just a doll. You could come visit us lots of fun places to go and see.
life is the lens you see it through
I like this family.... Calms me down, such a peaceful vibe..... and noah is the best addition
Congratulations Noah is so cute.
I'm so happy for you two
Good to see you back
Noah is a little Jewel
This is a new life for u 2
It will be the best memories of your lives
Congratulations
