I was a fan of Heath Ledger, but when I heard he was getting an oscar for this movie, I thought they were only giving it to him because he had passed away in such a tragic way. I hadn't seen the movie, I just based it on his past performances and while I loved him, I didn't think he was Oscar worthy. I told my brother and all he said is "Watch the movie". I tried to say something again and he repeated "Watch the movie".
So I watched the movie. And I ate my words. Heath proved me wrong 10000x over. He was Oscar worthy... good Lord

The funny thing is, J was dead right. Gyllenhaal looking off to the side was her looking towards the film crew looking for someone to stop it because Ledger grabbing her like that was improvisation. That wasn't in the script and she was actually scared because she didn't know what he was going to do.

This film was so great it changed awards. Christopher Nolan and "The Dark Knight" were comically overlooked for awards in the year the film was released in large part because it was an action/comic book movie. "The Dark Knight" being legitimately one of the best films made that year forced the people, who determine the awards, to change the system of how the Best Picture is determined. The change would be later known as "The Dark Knight" rule.

Probably the smartest thing I've ever heard a reactor say about this movie. I'm not gonna lie, I root for him beginning to end, because he reveals the contradictions and the hypocrisy of everyone else. He doesn't try to tell Batman that he's not crazy. He tells the truth, that they're both crazy. And the shit he did to Rachel, well that was just a public service.

"It's not about money... it's about sending a message."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of David Dastmalchian.
What's The Emergency Fact: While filming a chase scene on Lake Street, the Chicago Police Department received several calls from concerned citizens stating that the police were involved in a vehicle pursuit with a dark vehicle of unknown make or model.
Epic Cameo Fact: Senator Patrick Leahy (D) of Vermont is the older gentleman that confronts The Joker (Heath Ledger) at the party thrown by Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) for Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). Senator Leahy is a huge Batman fan and arranged an early showing of the movie for a fundraiser for the children's section of the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, Vermont. He also appeared in Batman Forever (1995), Batman & Robin (1997), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), and as a Batman: The Animated Series (1992) voice.
And Scene Fact: Heath Ledger directed both homemade videos that The Joker sends to GCN. The first video involving the fake Batman (Andy Luther) was done under writer, producer, and director Christopher Nolan's supervision. Nolan thought Ledger had done so well with that sequence, he felt there was no need for him to be there when it came time to film the scene where reporter Mike Engel (Michael Anthony Hall) reads The Joker's statement. He put his trust in Ledger and let him do whatever he wanted, ultimately pleased with the result after he'd seen the outcome.
Becoming The Joker: In preparation for his role as the Joker, Heath Ledger hid away in a motel room for about six weeks. During this extended stay of seclusion, Ledger delved deep into the psychology of the character. He devoted himself to developing the Joker's every tic, namely the voice and that sadistic-sounding laugh (for the voice, Ledger's goal was to create a tone that didn't echo the work Jack Nicholson did in his 1989 performance as the Joker). Ledger's interpretation of the Joker's appearance was primarily based on the chaotic, disheveled look of punk rocker Sid Vicious combined with the psychotic mannerisms of Malcolm McDowell's character, Alex De Large, from A Clockwork Orange (1971). Heath Ledger's sudden death from drug toxicity on January 22, 2008, prompted immediate speculation over this movie's state and Ledger's disposition prior to death. Soon after Ledger's death was announced, Warner Bros. issued a statement that verified that Ledger had finished all of his scenes in principal photography, as well as post-production duties (looping), thus making the Joker his final, completed movie role. Rumors abounded that playing the intense role had taken its toll on Ledger's mental state, causing him to become depressed and take the wrong combination of drugs as a result. However, his family has since put such rumors to rest by stating that far from being depressed, he had a lot of fun playing the role. Ledger did suffer from insomnia throughout his life, and would often take sleeping pills together with other prescription drugs (something his sister had actually warned against the night before his death). Unfortunately, the mix he took that night proved to be a fatal combination.

Yes. Unfortunately he had a mixture of:
      Hydrocodone
      Oxycodone (aka Percocet)
      Xanax
      And an unspecified sleeping medication
Present in his system, as stated by the toxicology report.
It breaks my heart that he passed before he could see how much people loved his performance...

There are lots of superheroes that I love and have loved over the years. But Batman is and always has been it for me. Hands down, the best. And supposedly, he was real. The story is that years back in Scotland, there was a guy named Wayne Bruce. He was a descendant of the Scottish king Robert the Bruce. He received an inheritance from his family, then donned a mask similar to Batman's cowl and went out in disguise taking on criminals. If this is true, he was actually the inspiration for the Batman comics.

This is one of those films where when I first watched it I thought it was nearing the end when it was half-way through, it just kept bringing more fun and entertainment throughout. There are not many films that can do that.
I also feel genuinely sad that Heath Ledger died after this film, it is arguably the best performance he ever did, as evidenced by the heavy toll it took on him, but I would have loved to see how he could have grown from this role into an even greater actor and the roles he could have brought to life if he was still alive today.

39:08 - Some times greatness is just a matter of destiny. That final explosion being delayed was NOT supposed to happen. It was a REAL technical glitch, but Ledger stayed in character and just REACTED when the explosion finally went off.

Look at the difference between actors running in front of a green screen and heavy CGI compared to practical explosions and street stunts.

Speaking of Michael Jai White...have we seen Spawn yet? I know, I know, I WISH it was a better movie than it really is. Our boy Al Simmons deserves better.
Edit: Yes, Barbara Gordon, who was also the first Batgirl, would later become known as Oracle after a bullet to the spine from the Joker paralyzed her.

Also heaths clapping in the cell when the police congratulated Gordon, was improvised, as was the look back, tap the detonator again when blowing up the hospital, as the charges actually didn’t go off as intended

THANK YOU for noticing the part about “Joker is still in the penthouse.“
Like… he’s with his henchman in a room full of billionaires. At least three or four of those dudes are getting kidnapped.
For me, it’s the only major flaw in an otherwise perfect movie.

When I was 8, I had a 4-wheeler and I dressed up as Batman. My cape got caught in the rear wheel, and it was with 1mph and I got pulled of it. A red mark on my neck and just a whole lot of damaged pride. I was Indiana Jones the next week.

The dinner party scene was the first scenes shot with Ledger in makeup and he was kept hidden from the cast so they didn't really know exactly what he was going to look like. The reactions on people's faces in the scene are more or less genuine.

I don’t think anyone’s mentioned it yet, but with regard to the ferries…
as we know, with Joker, “it’s never that simple.“
I think it’s *just* as likely that Joker would set up that extremely effed up scenario as he would be to *lie* about the detonator blowing up the *opposite* boat.

Hey, thank you for heaping some respect on Mark Hamill's voice-acting for Joker. I have long held that Mark Hamill has the best Joker voice, while Heath Ledger did the best live Joker (though Jack Nicholson's Joker also gets props).
