Yeah me in august 2024. Love Thin Lizzy and really like this track and album of Belle Sebastian. Bought the lp around 2004 and really like the clip. Also to see Stuart Murdoch runninv ( who run as a teenager the marathon sub 3) is very cool. About Phil lynott this musical hero should become 75 this month!🙏🏼
This is chicken soup for my soul, whenever I have the impending dark clouds hanging above me ,I come here and listen to Belle and Sebastian and the clouds start to clear,I think where I would be emotionally without Belle and Sebastian and teenage fanclub ,I'm proud to be Scottish ,love from sunny Edinburgh x
Same. Just last night, a horrible day...but on my way home, I felt better just by listening to them. Works every time. Tears and all, disappeared. Cheers from Greece!
Belle & Sebastian was the theme of my late teen years. I had every one of their albums. After 10 years I had almost completely forgotten how good their music was. My ten month old son now listens to "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" and falls asleep within two or three songs. I believe it is their best album.
That's awesome. I was a little late in discovering them, but in my early to mid 20's they were exactly what I was looking for. I didn't realize it until I first heard them. Going to see them live next week for the first time and i'm stoked.
Oh yes - Dear Catastrophe Waitress is the BEST album from them, it's sorta the Belle and Sebastian equivalent of Jack Haley's role as the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz.
How do you pick a favourite/their best? Hard to go by Sinister and Tigermilk. But DCW has an unbridled joy about it... Even this song, whose subject matter is actually quite depressing, just feels cathartic. So I'm not saying I agree, but I also don't disagree.
"I was there when you were sad, I was there when you were bad...Now it's my time of need I'm thinking, do I have to plead to get you by my side?" Oh Belle! what a lyric...
God, the Phil Lynott-inspired lyrics in this song are amazing, as are use of the classic "Lizzy swing" and "twin-harmony"/"dual guitars"! ALSO, Phil-sighting at 2:26!
Brighton Dome tonight, a beautiful concert. My old friend Glynn introduced me to the band in Soho back in ‘04. Glynn died but that memory lives on in the music
The lead singer is a keen runner. I'm pretty sure he did 2:52 in Edinburgh marathon. Also off memory they did the song The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner influenced by the book. He is Scottish as is Alan Wells 1980 Olympic champion now a coach. Not sure but think the video is about sticking with your dreams despite wanting to give up. Something musically this band have done being something of a slow burner. Has nothing to do with the song lyrics though! I'm guessing they he had the chance to work with Wells and just went for it! I'm a running coach by the way!
Brings to mind the scene from Chariots of Fire where Eric Liddell explains that yes God made him for a purpose (missionary to China), "but He also made me fast, and when I run I feel His pleasure." Well Stuart's purpose is spreading joy through music, but God also made him FAST and it is a pleasure to watch him run!
I wonder how many other skateboarders who have wondered, "who sings this" and tracked it down to you guy's ( including myself ) because we have always called it the Crailtap theme and it's so damm catchy.
Really catch 😊 - I just caught a few notes of it on Only Connect the TV Quiz on BBC 2 when it popped up as part of a question. Liked it so much I looked it up! 🎉😂❤ FAB! 👏👏 Thanks for the 🎶
That’s cool. I’m a former skateboarder and always follow the sport, love it. No idea what you’re referring to tho! Skating vids were a huge influence on my music taste, Firehose from the Natas Kaupus bit, the whole H Street series, Powell vids, Girl soundtrack was brilliant, I really could go on and on. Hip hop was the same, taught me about so much different music. Music is beautiful:). Anyway, I’m drunk and waffling shite. Enjoy yourself bro
Beautifully said. Life can feel crass and cold and dark and ugly, and within 10 seconds of listening to them, I feel better, not in any facile, shallow, Pollyanna-ish way, but in a way that says, "Yes, all of that, and even so, it's beautiful and profoundly OK."
It wasnt shallow. It was hope. That a light could restore my destroyed heart to functional. I did not hate on my own, it was conditioned in me after many, many attempts at love. People see what they want to see. I had the heart of a child that was just dissapointed too many times. Like my little girl was probably.

I'd rather be in Tokyo I'd rather listen to Thin Lizzy-oh Watch the Sunday gang in Harajuku There's something wrong with me, I'm a cuckoo
There's something altogether redeeming about this band. You feel cleaner, fresher for having listened. It's sexy in the least 'sexy' way possible, it's cheering without being corny or unreal. It caters to the most fragile moments of your soul whilst also being light and listenable. It's like finally getting around to washing your favourite shirt.
It's alright, there's really no such thing as "bad" taste in music, just different. The fact that something can cause such a reaction in humans is an amazing concept.
@whangie1 Looks like 2002 to me. Although the coffee shop waitress is sporting a very rockablilly haircut, but lots of girls were rocking the short hair/styling gel look five years ago. I think maybe the people in the video are just caught up in the afterglow of how awesome the song is.
Hmm, love this song, until tonight I didn't know much of B & S beyond "Another Sunny Day," but this song is cool. For the record, is the coach in the video Allan Wells?
Ok this is my take of the video. He keeps running but now he is alone without friends or a girlfriend. And from this point onwards, he has the loneliness of a middle distance runner

I'm glad to see you
I had a funny dream
You were wearing funny shoes
You were going to a dance
You were dressed like a punk but you are too young to remember
Glad to see you
I'm outside the house
I'm not thinking well today
I've got no energy
I'm glad that you are waiting with me
Tell me all about your day
Breaking off is misery
I see a wilderness for you and me
Punctuated by philosophy
And a wondering how things could've been
I'm happy for you
You've made it hard for me
I counted on your company
You are staying with your friends tonight
I'm feeling sorry for myself
I keep taking everything to be a sign
I'm happy for you
Now I know this hurt is poison
Too sharp to be bled
I'm sitting on my empty bed
On my empty bed
At night the fever grows it's pounding pounding
I'd rather be in Tokyo
I'd rather listen to Thin Lizzy-oh
Watch the Sunday gang in Harajuku
There's something wrong with me, I'm a cuckoo
Scary moment, lovin' every moment
I was high from playing shows
We lost a singer to her clothes
My trouble raised its ugly head
I was revealed
And I was home in bed
I was a kid again
Jesus told me, go after every coin like it was the last in the world
And protect the wayward child
But I'm a little lost sheep
I need my Bo Peep
I know I need My Shepherd here tonight
Breaking off is misery
I see a wilderness for you and me
Punctuated by philosophy
And a wondering how things could've been
I'd like to see you
But really I should stay away
And let you settle down
I've got no claims to your crown
I was the boss of you
And I loved you
You know I loved you
It's all over now
I was there for you
When you were lonely
I was there when you were sad
I was there when you were bad
Now it's my time of need
I'm thinking, do I have to plead to get you by my side?
I'd rather be in Tokyo
I'd rather listen to Thin Lizzy-oh
Watch the Sunday gang in Harajuku
There's something wrong with me, I'm a cuckoo

That’s awesome. Really helped me get a grasp of the video. It’s funny how you can stretch meaning out of anything. You could argue that the first time it’s hinted that running would get in between him and his personal life is when he (the runner) gets inbetween the friendship/relationship of those two woman by literally running through them and throwing their belongings (life) all over the street. He then has a few relationships where woman try to support him by bringing him drinks and snacks while on his run.
