- When I received my Atari 2600+, I also received my copy of Berzerk Enhanced Edition so I made a separate video for that complete with the unboxing and playing the game on both the Atari 2600+ and on an original Atari 2600 on a CRT television.

"Humanoid Must Not Escape" When you clear the board

The robots couldn’t shoot diagonally in the original 2600 version, they can here.
In the original arcade version, they could.
In the arcades, back in the '80's, I was absolutely addicted to this game.

I agree, the most infamous phrase in the game missing; but only when Otto appears. Though it seems 2600 Otto comes out alot sooner perhaps wouldnt keep up pace every level. Looks like,atari just used the digitize speech hack that came out years ago for 2600 berzerk.Still i agree this released should have included the manual.
I'm literally turning 48 tomorrow and this is a game i remember from my childhood. I suck at it.
Considering there isn't an ending. You're expected to die eventually. Your "last stand" to kill as many robots as you can while you defiantly say F-U to Evil Otto!

I loved this game. I was really young playing it so it kind of freaked me out a little. No music, just silence and robots wanting to kill you
Yes... It's not the only 2600 game I have with speech that works on original hardware without any add-ons.
Man. When Evil Otto (The TRUE death smiley) arrived 8 year old me cried out in fear, joy, and Oldschool. I might have to buy this just for that.
He was really scary on the Vectrex version, he made a menacing boing sound

Thanks for the unboxing! I love the cart sleeves on these, but do admittedly wish they included a manual. (The digital manual is announced, but not out yet.) I like the new diagonal enemy shots! I wish there was a title screen added though. Other than that, it's great! I'm glad you translated the "chicken" phrases, as I had trouble making those ones out. fyi, if you want the hardest settings, along with Otto, it's setting "9." It has no free lives, and Otto etc. It's too bad that many don't think Otto is even in the game because the default setting 1 is set so easy. Just like Asteroids setting 10, (I think it was,) features diagonal asteroids which many don't think exists either! For this reason, it really would have been nice to raise the price 50 cents and include a manual lol!
They didn't even have to include a manual if they didn't want to... they could have just printed that information on the back of the box... or even the cartridge sleeve!
My fave arcade game of all time and the first VCS game I played that Xmas of 1980 once my new VCS was set up... oh the excitement I felt !... and yes if I recall the original box was a light purple colour...
Yes it is an awesome game! And now with the additions it's even better! Maybe I think you didn't play it on Christmas 1980, but on Christmas 1982; because the version for Atari 2600/VCS appeared in August of the latter. I received my copy yesterday and I'm loving it. It's a game I didn't play much back in the day, but I'm making up for lost time.

The voices are correct to the actions but only when nothing is displayed on the screen. Still pretty impressive considering the 2600 hardware.
So I think me getting in game voices (even if they are not as clear) for my Coleco version was a good achievement :)
Now I know I need to play game 6, they really should have included something with the game settings on it.

Champ games did one for the 2600, Gorf arcade with all stages and the arcade voice but you need a Atari vox add on to get the voices.
What does it say when you die, "is it got the intruder, got the chicken?" I think the original arcade version said "got the humanoid, got the intruder". One other difference from the arcade version is it doesn't say "intruder alert, intruder alert" when evil otto appears on the screen.
I think the line "Get the intruder, get the chicken" was in the original arcade... it's just that it wasn't played that often and was kind of a play on the phrase it played more frequently "Get the intruder, get the humoid"
Diagonal enemy shots have been added too.
The reason for the ESRB rating is due to the fact most retailers have a requirement that video games must have a ESRB rating to be sold there.
They are however actually optional and are not mandatory which is why the XP carts don't have ratings on them, as they are only being sold directly from Atari.

Yeah.. but... I can't see any retailer carrying Atari 2600 games these days.
Some major reatailers wouldn't carry any game without a rating.

I agree that the cartridge sleeves are a nice touch. I also want to get sleeves printed for my older games. I've seen repro boxes on eBay and Etsy before but not sleeves.
My guess as to why the ESRB logo is because they want to sell these in places like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy. Basically, they want these in big box stores. To sell a game in a big box store, it has to have an ESRB logo on it.
I would be absolutely shocked if I saw this for sale in a brick and mortar retail store.

I was wondering if the shooting through the side of the room "glitch" was still there. In a room with 2 side exits: On the left if you get close to the room exit and shoot, it shoots behind you. If On the right side of the room and shoot out the exit, it will shoot on the left side of the room's exit.

When I was younger and the robots would explode I thought the explosion was a smiley face.
I still play the original arcade rom including original speech on my atgames legends ultimate stand up machine!! I get quite far because the machine features a rewind button so I can rewind back from the spot I died and go alternate way lol

I might be alone in thinking that the sound and graphics of the 'real' Atari playing this game are better than the 2600+.
CRT tvs really made those games look better. Makes sense considering the games were designed with them in mind. Adventure on crt looks almost mistical and eerie, which I love.
The robots can shoot diagonally now. They could not do that in the original release.
They just made a great game, best game ever.
They are -now- selling this for $50 Canadian on Amazon. SMH. The dollars per megabyte ratio is off the meat rack.

I too was disappointed there was no manual when I opened my copy earlier today. Also, where's the "Intruder alert! Intruder alert!" when Evil Otto enters? That is THE phrase everyone remembers. It's what the nerds say when Homer enters the dorm room when he goes back to college. It's what the robots say when Fry and Leela go to their planet and get discovered. Try harder next time, Atari.
The Atari can only manage the speech when the screen is black. Adding "Intruder Alert" in the middle of a level would be awkward.
It could have been added just once before the game starts perhaps.
Voices are based on scenarios.
I played this new Berzerk on my 2600+ and found that it will flake out after a while and prevent me from continuing the game. It has happened in 6 minutes, but it can take a lot longer. It might freeze and quit responding to input, or maybe just unexpectedly end the game, as though maybe I won. Anyone else seeing this?
Maybe a bad connection with the cartridge? Doesn't sound like it should be doing that.
@@CrowContinuum The 2600+ is loading other games from new cartridges just fine. It does have trouble with some of the old games, but when it loads those improperly the result is unplayable and unrecognizable. It could be an issue with the new Berzerk cartridge I got. I made a couple of videos for Atari support to look at.
@@JeffJackowski It sounds like an issue I was having with a few carts, but they would eventually work after I cleaned the contacts... a lot. The only one I couldn't get to work was Donkey Kong Jr. No matter how much I cleaned it I would just get a glitched out mess even though the cart worked fine on my original hardware.

There's a few phrases. Chicken, fight like a robot. Get the humanoid, get the chicken. That's all I can think of right now for some reason, lol.
he says three different things lol. cleared room, uncleared room, and death.
When you kill all the robots .. humanoid must not escape.... When you leave a room while there are still robots standing....Chicken Fight like a robot. And then the laugh when you die..... Also robots don't fire diangly in the original
Okay, still no title screen, still no visible (on-screen) menu for selecting options... still no possible (positive) game ending (unlike even Shamus on the Vic-20)... even an amateur ROMhack could have gone much further in improving the game. It remains a depressing, downward spiral unto death in a darkened room full of mindless automatons. A little too close to my day to day reality.
berzerk is the best of the best atari game ever made...imo

You have to hand it to Atari for repackaging a forty year old game, adding a couple lines of voice and selling it at a crazy price and not even bothering to print an instruction booklet. Absolutely no shame lol.

@@CrowContinuum Well, many people cite "additional costs" but tbh I used to work in print and packaging (left it about 7 years ago now) and can tell you that a simple double sided piece of paper would cost nothing if they had a decent relationship with the company doing it. A booklet of folded sheet yes, would be more. It would be interesting to know how many have been bulk produced, the initial cost is the set up. As a little guide, my channel shows two games I had the packaging reproduced for (Panzer Dragoon Saga and Sonic 2-in-1) and from memory, they were done in sets of 20 for around £75 per run - now that's a small run. The unit cost drops to extremes when printing in the thousands etc.
