Retired at 68 sold my house in large city, moved to a smaller town, it was the best decision I ever made. Less expensive, less crime, less noise and a lot bigger yard for the dog to run around.

Years ago I bought several space heaters one for every room to use in case of my furnace ever going out during the winter, anytime I was at a yard sale and found one cheap I would buy it and began accumulating them, my wife criticized me What do we need all those for, its summertime?I said I want to get one for every room in the house ,Anyway those heaters sat for many years until last November our furnace went out and it was really cold and any repair place said it would take several days before they could send anybody other 24 hr repair places wanted almost 200 dollars for a house call, Anyway having those heaters saved me from being blackmailed by the furnace places till I could call around and get more estimates, I did find a independent repair guy that was a lot more reasonable on face book to do the repair, With that strategy in mind I also bought a small window air conditioner in case my central air unit ever failed where I can at least sleep at night,
I told the wife maybe we should just turn off the central unit at night all the time and just cool the bedroom with the small unit, that way we would not be paying for the electricity to cool the rest of the house that is not being used all night,

Heating and air conditioning guy here, I can buy all the materials to replace furnace and a/c for less than $4000. I typically charge between $6000-$8000. The rest is pure profit for big companies with shiny trucks. Just a tip for home owners to drive around new single family home construction sites, around lunch time, in their area. Find the trade you need and inquire about them doing side work. A little leg work can save you big bucks. Ask for photos and references!!

@@debbieframpton3857 A lot goes in to consideration for price. I live in the Midwest where most homes have a basement or a dedicated mechanical room. If your equipment is in an attic or a crawlspace with difficult working conditions, that would increase the price. Also, companies take into consideration how desperate you are. If it's 110 and the a/c dies you'll be more likely to pay a premium.

We are seniors living on social security. We got a small inheritance from my husband's mother and it is gone. We just had to have our car put in the shop and that cost $6000. This was cheaper then buying another car. We have no friends or family in our area so we have to have a car. Our central unit had to have a fan motor and it was $1500. We were told since the unit was 14 years old when anything else happens it would be best to replace it. Our utility company works with a company in our area that will add to your bill each month and let you pay it off in like 7 years. We did that with our last unit and it worked great. It is very difficult to save up any money these days especially when you are older.

I believe now that my husband and I are retired if I HAD to move and sell our home it would definitely be into an apt complex! does not have to be a "senior" place etc just get a nice ground floor apt (husband is disabled with walker) and then you don't have any responsibilities other than rent and utilities, anything breaks...they repair, you dont have to have home insurance or pay taxes.. no outside work at all, they shovel snow, wash windows, mow, we have a small home now, no reason to downsize anymore, just move to an apt.

We seem to have a lot in common. We used my husband's mothers's inheritance for us to pay off our house and also to pay our bills for two years. That was incredibly helpful and we are grateful for that. We are being warned that our heat pumps will probably go soon but like you we are trying to limp by with them. We sure aren't saving money--I mean, we are cutting expenses but not really saving money. We are just trying to hold on to what we have but soon we will be cutting into that. It is how it goes, I guess. Good luck to you guys.

@@countryfrau8328 The struggle is real. We are cutting back where we can especially with groceries. Going back to eating more basic things like my grandparents did. Eating more beans, casseroles and soups and using more hamburger. My husband and I were talking and the government are always trying to help people nut the seniors never get anything for help. @@patriciadowd2948 I totally get it. It seems like a coordinated attempt to make sure we won't be able to build multigenerational wealth--if you are even able to have anything to leave to the next generation directly. And if you ARE able to the govt wants their cut so fast that they won't be able to hold onto it as part of a legacy for their own children. And on it goes. I'm mad and I always have mixed feelings because we pay our own way but at the same time I resent those that don't have to because it seems that they don't get less. Since my husband died 2 years ago, I haven't used my central air & use our ceiling fans, which he installed in all the upstairs rooms. Downstairs, I use a floor fan, only in the kitchen while cooking, the only time I need it. The lower the floors, esp the basement, the cooler the space. So I close the curtains to keep out the sun, and open it in the winter to let the sun heat the rooms. Trust God, He will give you the mother-wit(wisdom) to take care of yourself & your family.

I paid $65 for my house too, 9 years ago. Middle class home. 3/2 on a corner lot. It's worth probably $175 now. I'm in a small town in Texas (Brenham). You have to keep homeowners ins if you have a mortgage. I live on disability. I'm in a wheelchair. I took 2 years and taught myself how to paint and i now sell my paintings for extra money. I have a 99 Geo Metro I bought 6 years ago for $800. I have only had to spend $400 on repairs over 6 years. My ins on it is $45 a month. It doesn't have AC and the radio doesn't work, but it runs great. I got window units in my house, and put curtains up between the rooms so i only cool the room i am currently in, not the whole house. During the day that's the living room/ kitchen, at night the bedroom. This keeps my electricity bill under $175 in the hot Texas summers. I do all my own yardwork in my wheelchair. Being in a chair, i don't go alot of places because it's a hassle so my old car is fine for just running errands and going to the gym or the store. I shop early in the morning in the summer to avoid the heat. I spend alot of time outside so I'm used to the heat and it's not a big deal having no AC in my car. I believe one should spend their money on a nicer home and drive an old, ugly car if finances are tighter. I wash my car like twice a year because the clear coat is essentially missing and some of the paint is chipping off. On the plus side, i never have to lock the car and don't worry about anyone stealing it. It's a throw away car. Whenever it breathes its last breath, i will leave it on the side of the road and buy something else that's old and ugly that runs well. Thanks for the video

Our goal was to keep our house to give to the kids but the taxes on it are over $21k a year already so we have to get real as we are retired and can't even cover that! No freeze on taxes here at age 65. We have a really modest small house from the 1950s that is on a third of an acre. The issue is that it is on a lake so that's why the tax is so crazy. We aren't even water people--we don't fish, swim or boat although our adult kids loved growing up there. It is just too hard to hold onto that house for the kids.

Had a college history book back in 1979. The best one I've ever had because it was not the same as the ones before which just copy each other. This one talked about the full decade coming up of each century; this one was U.S. history 1900-1978, since it was now 1979. The author would talk about how the public was feeling, the economy, innovations, etc., and not just the actual historical events. The last decade, 1970-1978, he talked about the roll of politicians for about 5 lines. Each page for a decade was single space lines on 8x11 page so alot of information came across. He mentioned the roll of politicians was also to innovate. He mentioned coming up with different ways of financing new projects, maintaining existing infrastructure, etc., because the old ways may not be viable in the future or can no longer be the only way of financing. This is when the mills were shutting down in America, businesses moving to China, retirees aging and pension money no longer coming in to be taxed. I have watched for 50 yrs now and the politicians are still doing the same old game of financing, no new ways or thoughts, and the well is running dry. People do not make the big money the mills paid, more people cannot find work because of the exportation of jobs, the retiree tax base is passing away, etc, and yet the politicians keep doing business and funding as usual. The warning was there 50 yrs ago and yet the politicians only take care of themselves. Time to change else perish.

I guess I am priced out on major repairs. We need windows, flooring and maybe other appliances down the road. A long time ago, people lived without central heat and air. We have a fireplace we could use for the heat. For the a/c, we could use all the ceiling fans, wear fan necklaces, use ice a lot, drink a lot of water. I got tired of giving a zillion Christmas presents, so not doing that anymore.

I am doing the same thing I discovered a couple of years ago. When it gets too hot, I turn on the a/c for 10-15 minutes, then turn it back up again. Three hours or so later, if it's too hot again, I turn it on again for the same amount. The only time this varies is when I go to bed, because I sleep on the second floor and it's hotter up there. In winter, I do the opposite. If it gets cold, I turn on the heat for 10-15 minutes, then turn it down again. This "spotty" use of the central system saves me a fortune, and I am not uncomfortable. I use fans, too. Counter fans and ceiling fans. Sometimes I just circulate the air for a couple of hours. Other things I found are "cold cloths" which are sold commercially. They work differently than regular wet cloths, as they stay very cold and you can feel the cold from them ongoing. I am able to tie one around my forehead and am comfortable at 79 degrees in my living room, with a small fan blowing. I also have a baseball style cap that has gel pockets in it. You keep it in the fridge or freezer (freezer is too much for me, I found. I got brain freeze) and just wear it as you are working outside. If you have two, you can switch them out. Look under "ice hats" or "ice caps" on Amazon or anywhere and you can find different styles. I wore mine the other day mowing the grass, and stayed perfectly comfortable. The cold cloth is a wonder, also.

You are correct. The housing market and housing necessity is requiring a change, it did for me . Living in Illinois, 5 years ago was already the start of what is today. I am a renter who is a caregiver who lives with an adult son with a disability. I had to move 100 miles west of the southwest suburban area we called home. It meant a drastic change but it came with lower monthly expenses on all fronts. It was hard because of separation from friends and family. It required a job transfer. Yet, here we are in 2024, and although I'm still in the rural area, I can sustain. The area I left in suburban Chicago is OUTRAGEOUS. There would be no way to return. So I do feel stuck but at the same time I am grateful that I am blessed with a sustainable living situation. I did become a minimalist so the sustainability is continuing without issues. If I can do it at age 60 many can too, but it means sacrifices. I don't have debt, I continue savings, and I live frugally.

I used to live in London, UK, while studying and working. After graduation I opened my mind to other places, especially with a plan to buy a property as a security for the future. I wouldn't afford it in London. That time I told to myself: there is life elsewhere, too. And that was right. Now having a good big house for a price of maybe one bedroom flat in London (if even that), with garden, growing some produce myself, even renting a 2 bed bungalow before this purchase was comparable to renting a single room in London at that time. When money gets short people need to reconsider their priorities.

    Hey Money Mom,
At the end of this month we'll be moving from a very expensive western state to one of the midwestern states you mentioned in this video to enjoy an early retirement. Are we rich? Hardly! The house we bought in the midwest is a major fixer upper and not for the faint of heart--and believe me, some days I feel like fainting. The city is small, but it has a Wal-Mart, an Aldi, and Hobby Lobby. If I want Trader Joe's and Target I gotta go an hour either way to other bigger cities. Amazon delivers and we have an active Insta-cart business too. There's a small town cozy vibe here and it's true that everyone is friendly.
Our cost of living from West Coast to the Midwest should drop by 30ish percent or it can stay the same but we'll enjoy more amenities such as having a home 2 x the size of our West house.
All this to say there are no perfect solutions for the rise in the cost of living. Just choices to make. Choose your sacrifices. And if you don't make choices eventually your circumstances will make them for you.

They both have good jobs making close to 200k a year. My son-in-law moved to Kansas from Seattle because the cost of living was so ridiculous. He swears that it was the best decision of his life. He could never live and support his family in Seattle the way he does in Kansas, plus he says he actually gets to enjoy sunshine almost daily here, and not constantly battle the homeless situation that plagues Seattle.

I bought my Honda truck when it was 2 years old. It was Honda Certified. I would suggest getting a used vehicle that is certified by the dealership. Also the used vehicle you are thinking of buying you can call your auto insurance company and have them run the VIN# before your purchase to see if the vehicle has been in a flood or in any accidents. Check with your bank or credit union to see if they will offer you a better interest rate than the dealership. Good Luck!

Hopefully, our old vehicles will keep going for a long time. I have seen videos where the Astro van had 444,000 miles. We haven't even hit 200,000 yet. She isn't pretty but she is a tank. I just listened to this video. We’ve cut back on many things but at the moment I can’t think of anything we’ve cut out except for vacations. We haven’t taken one in about 5 years. That was to see family & we stayed with them. So we had airfare & some food & miscellaneous expenses. We moved near them shortly after that trip. We’ve cut back a lot on meat. We eat more veggies & beans. Last year our food budget at the grocery store averaged just under $70 per person per month. We average eating 20 meals prepared in our kitchen per person per week. With this budget we don’t have food waste. We’ve cut back on clothes. Our clothing budget is $9.00 per month per person. We only eat out with extended family-we no longer eat out with friends. When we’re meeting a friend we’re meeting for coffee & that’s a short black coffee. We don’t order fancy coffee drinks or order any food. We try to get all of our coffees at one chain to maximize the rewards. Also sometimes since we’re recognized by the baristas they will give us a misorder or something that they made too many of for free. We turn the thermostat down in the winter & up in the summer. We look at every line item on our budget & see how we can cut back.

It costs 10-15 a month pay as you go. Plus I have a land line phone.

I live in the South and this is something that I have actually been working on.
    1. We put Window Film Privacy One Way Mirror Glass Tint Heat Control Sun UV Blocking Sliding Door Tinting Reflective Static Cling for Home on our windows.
    2. I bought car sun shades at the Dollar Tree and put them in each panel in the garage door. I am actually starting to double up on them.
    3. Insulated the garage attic.... um don't know why the house didn't come with that?
    4. Ceiling fans and I just bought nice oscillating fans on sale from Walmart and placed them in each room.
    5. I turned the air up to 77 and the fan helps to move the air. It feels cool with just the fans moving the air. I try to turn off the air conditioning unit it off as much as possible. I have been opening the windows in the evening and early morning. This will be stopping when the heat really kicks in.
    6. Soft ice packs on my neck cools me off.
    7. Thick insulated curtains, blinds, and double up on curtains.
    8. Cook outside on grill. If cook inside, use fan to cool area during and after cooking.
    9. Lights create heat. I limit lights on.
    10. Last year's bill was $216 this year to date was $145. Everything helps!
I hope that this helps someone!

For some parts of the world, consider a swamp cooler. It's not as effective in humid climates as an AC unit/units, but it's drastically cheaper to buy, install, and operate, vs. a central AC unit. And if you're buying a window AC unit for every room, it may be cheaper than that, too.

When we bought our house in 2000. Mortgage, homeowners and property taxes all together were $1300. We paid our house off years ago and now just the taxes and homeowners insurance run us over $700 a month. Electric bills that used to be $125 are now $300. It just never stops. Our debt based society and a government that can’t reign in spending are causing the crazy inflation that is hurting us all. We are under attack with constant currency debasement. All you can do is get debt free and save for a rainy day because they always come wether we like it or not.

😊 I have a few 2 bedroom rental units each of which has its own central AC with outside evaporator. It would cost $6000 to replace each one plus labor. The Freon R22 alone to recharge is at least 2 pounds or $300.
I now tell all my tenants to buy window AC for $150 and take it with them when they move out.
Now I only have to concentrate on the heater which is easy.

My ranch is going all solar soon the electric rates are killing us. I run a fish farm/ goat farm on 55 acres. I need to pump well water by solar means to cut them out. Being in Aridzona we get plenty of solar, and I'm sitting on a very large shallow water table. My wells can pump 1,000 gallons per minute, if I could afford the electric cost. Solar is my answer to that next year.

I have bought older cars all my adult life some as old as twenty years old and drove them for years. I was lucky I had such good luck because I drove them on commutes to work and on vacations. My current car is a 2010 Toyota Corolla that I have driven for 12 years. It was the only car I ever bought that new. I plan to drive it until it dies lol. I am 69 and just want to say buying older cars can be a reasonable way to go if need be. I work full time with two side jobs so have saved up money to pay cash if I ever need another car or for other emergencies. One thing I would say I can’t afford is redecorating my home unless it was necessary to fix something. I make do with what I have lol

Regarding moves, be sure to check the local property tax assessments. It might be less or more than what you are paying now even if you are downsizing to a smaller place. My stepson and his family live in a suburb of Fort Worth. Property values and taxes have skyrocketed in the last few years.

Filing for homestead exemption helped our property taxes come down. I also think we are getting so people are priced out of being able to retire.

I have been doing take out and eating out some, especially since my man passed a year ago, but i have to take a break once in a while because I work a lot. Usually, I stretch those restaurant meals to 2-3 meals. It saves time packing lunches for work or cooking and washing dishes. It gives me more time to work on things that have been behind for years. However, there are weekend days when I "clean out the fridge and cupboards" and make soup, breads, cold salads, etc., and clean up all the veggies to use up what I've got and freeze stuff for easy future use. So I am frugal enough that I can afford a few meals out.
