If you’re gonna call out frauds, you need to call out your own network, which is the SEC at Tennessee. Tennessee lost by more points than both Indiana and SMU. Just because you work at ESPN doesn’t mean that you get to not mention Tennessee just because they’re in the SEC
Paul Finebaum is such an SEC lover that he’s not going to say anything bad about Tennessee even though they had the worst loss. If Alabama had been in the playoffs, they might’ve lost just as much as Tennessee did and you know he would’ve never called them out.
When Curt is cocky, Finebaum takes issue to it and says he's "running his mouth" but when Kiffin is cocky or pitching a fit, Finebaum says he's just speaking his mind
Interestingly, the Juggernauts Organ, Ohio St, Georgia and Notre Dame have to go against each other in the 2nd round. While Texas and Penn State have to get to the final 4 before coming against one...
Yeah, Tennessee got humbled by almost 4 touchdowns but the SEC deserves a 3 loss team that lost to Oklahoma and vandy in the playoffs over fraudulent Indiana who’s only loss was at OSU by less than UT. Duh.
They should just do away with conference championship games, play their 12 regular season games and jump right into the CFP if this is going to be the system we are going with.
This is the first year. I think the expanded playoff has the chance to change the makeup of some of these lesser programs. Prospects will see that they have a chance to get their shot at the natty at a larger pool of schools - some may take the leap to start somewhere unexpected. It doesnt resolve how crazy NIL and transferring are but its a bit of a counter to it all.
This weekend was a prime example of why the playoff needs expanded. It gives the “deserving” teams like smu and Indiana a chance….but it would also give the “good” teams like bama and South Carolina a chance. Expand it to a 24 team format. FCS, D2 and D3 have done this for years and it works beautifully. All the conference winners get home games, while the top 8 teams in the country get byes and home field the second round.
@ every other division has done it for years. Believe me it works. The first round games will more than likely be blowouts but it gives everyone a chance. You’d be surprised at the upsets and underdogs going far
Here’s Finebaum’s real argument… if you’re not in the SEC or from the biggest universities in America with the biggest alumni base then you don’t deserve to be in the playoffs. So with Finebaum’s argument let’s get rid of conferences, conference championships, and any chance of upsets. So we should abolish the ncaa basketball tournament as well bc there never is an upset of a super power. Didn’t TN beat Bama? And so Bama shouldn’t be in either. This is America… we were built underdogs and we love underdog stories. He’s suck a douche.
Problem is Matt, there are only a handful of nutsjob fans that would rather beat Michigan than a playoff game. This is over sensationalizing journalism
I can take a blowout of a team who deserves to be there like Tennessee. Not ones who we knew didn’t belong. I live SMU because I’m from Dallas, but they didn’t earn that spot.
It’s simple you take away conference championships and you give the byes to the highest ranked teams . Let the Smu,Boise , and Indiana teams knock each other out the first round
The regular season was ruined for what we got yesterday and Friday. Playoff needs to retract not expand. There's never more than 4-5 elite teams in a given year. Yesterday was the networks getting paid and that's it.
12 teams was probably never a good idea as you will have 7 or 8 teams that are just offerings.....its not to important what these games looked like as the home teams won .....what will be the the last team standing is what will be important or meaningful.....we have a team ranked 16th as one of the top 12 team's.....if we go with 20 teams it will probably mean even more non competition games ...as it turs out for the most part the 4 team setup is all that was needed....and it will prove itself out within 4 years .....
The problem is that teams Like Penn St. and Ohio State were placed wrong. They should've had a 1st-round bye, and ASU and Boise St. should've been playing in the 1st round. Also, Miami should've been in the first round instead of SMU or Clemson. But I agree with the expansion and the 12-team playoff. No different than the NFL - the national champion should EARN it on the field, not be selected by a committee of people casting votes.
100% you nailed it. I'm a G5 apologist and even I firmly believe unless a MWC or SBC or whatever team has absolutely demolished in conference and out of conference, they should not get a bye.
Listen to Joel Klatts podcast about the subject you open with. It is well thought out and true compared to listening to two crybabies and never played football.
National champions aren't crowned because they are more talented or play a tougher schedule. Winning matters that's why you play the game. 3 loses teams don't have an argument
No more expansions it's just going to keep going till you got the entire sec in there.. and that's not just realistic at all because he isn't all that Tennessee got dog walked dog walked..a team that beat Alabama so yeah
Indiana and SMU shouldn’t have been in. Really Arizona state and Boise State either, because Texas and Penn State about to drop a 50 burger on them, Arizona state only gets in winning their trash conference. Jeanty is awesome, and I hope my Pats draft him to go with Drake Maye, but he won’t be enough to overcome a real team.
If your gonna talk about Boise you need to provide some clarification for what a team has to do to be considered good enough, cuz this program has had A LOT of compelling seasons.... 2002 - 11-0 #11 2003 - 12-1 #15 2004 - 12-0 #9 2006 - 12-0 #6 2008 - 12-0 #9 2009 - 13-0 #6 2010 - 12-1 #6 2011 - 12-1 #6 2012 - 12-2 #12 2014 - 12-2 #10 2019 - 11-2 #15 None of these teams were allowed to play for a championship and only 3 of them made NY6 bowls. 5 of these seasons include teams beating P5 conference champions. 4 of these seasons were undefeated. 3 of these seasons had 3+ top 25 wins. 3 of the seasons had #1 NCAA poll rankings. So if youre gonna say that Boise isnt deserving - please make a criteria for what a team has to do to be considered good.

They should just do away with conference championship games, play their 12 regular season games and jump right into the CFP if this is going to be the system we are going with.
The worst were #1 SMU,#2 Tennessee #3 Indiana #4 Clemson
Smu was fine other than their QB costing them 21 points
Clemson could have won and it was entertaining except for the excessive run gam of Texas. Boring
Interesting distinction by Paul on Indiana versus Tennessee. Don't buy it for a second. Indiana played OSU tougher than did Tennessee.
Better to see "frauds" in playoffs than in the final game like we've seen in the past.
A championship game that ends in a blowout is just boring.
