The INSTAGRAM PROBLEM for PHOTOGRAPHERS

- My PROBLEM with INSTAGRAM //
The way that photographers choose how to present their work is an important part of the artwork, it’s part of the story and the concept. A photograph is an artwork and its form is just as important as that of a sculpture or painting.
Instagram is a fantastic tool at your disposal. It empowers you to connect with potentially millions of people and instantly share your work with others. But remember it is just a tool - just like the lenses you shoot with or the software you process your shots with. In the same way you don’t only shoot at f/1.4 just because your lens can do that, or you don’t add lens flares into each of your shots simply because Photoshop has that function, you shouldn’t let Instagram be your last port of call in your image-making process just because it’s there.
Tools are there to help realise our creative vision, not to define it.

*What are your thoughts on Instagram? Do you agree/disagree with my points? Let me know in the comments*
Your creativity doesn't seem to know any borders. Man, you never cease to amaze me!
Jamie Windsor I was trying to get out of it, now you just opened my eyes! I’m out of Instagram
using youtube as perhaps intended here......any advice on how to go about actually getting your digital shots onto large prints? this isn't necessarily directed at Jamie but for anyone willing to help out an amateur like myself. I imagine it might get a bit pricey, but I'm not deterred by that per se.
Hi Jamie: I use instagram to post fun pictures for my friends as I am moving away from FB, and not a as a photo gallery of my work (I'm an amature). I follow a number of Pro's and use their images as inspiration. I often check their websites to see the "full" size images. I do see another issue with Instgram being the need to post "epic" photos and giving some people FOMO, anyway keep up the great work, really enjoy your approach to photography
Amazing video Jamie! Thought provoking, content and your editing is superb! Agree 100% that we should explore all ways to tell our stories - this is a great reminder. Insta for its flaws is still a brilliant portable portfolio with access to a global audience, but you’re right - it’s limitations shouldn’t be ours!
You did a brilliant job editing this. I love how smooth everything is.
Totally agree such a great video
I love it too! Amazing video
Agreed.
Thanks.
Yes indeed, I liked it so much! And an important topic :)
I used to be a Motion Designer. I know how many hours have been sucked in this montage to offer this beautiful video. Thanks a lot for such dedication, Jamie. Fantastic work!
I think Jamie Windsor now has the best photography channel on UA-cam.
Definitely! Jamie Windsor and Sean Tucker as well have a huge impact on modern photography.
I agree completely.
Indeed!
@@TaipeiGeek LOL I only discovered him now because of the drama, its so cringey!
Totally. SO well produced. Intelligent, contemporary and you always come away either with an opinion or having learnt something.
The only UA-cam vlogger whose videos are works of art in themselves. Another great job
Another one is: ua-cam.com/channels/XV7bLiYu6DSX73KuoprBzw.html
@Nathan McGill 79 ok, so apparently there are a couple of others
I loved the animation in this one! I’ve been playing around with smoother transitions for my next upcoming video but this is top tier!
Best vertical UA-cam video I've seen, nice transitions! By the way, I had never printed a photo till this year, now I got a wall full of my photos. Thanks for your work, cheers from Brazil!
I do not enjoy vertical videos at all
@@SimonWoodburyForget You could not be more wrong about space efficient. How is adding black bars on any TV or monitor more efficient? Anyone can rotate a phone into landscape mode, not everyone can flip a 55" TV vertically to avoid black bars and getting the full video resolution
I assumed the presentation in this format was a joke in keeping with Instagram's default video setting.
The editing in this video is insanely good. It's finally helped me pinpoint the lingering issue I've had with instagram recently, I've always felt something wasn't quite right with presenting my work there, this finally helped me get my thoughts into a coherent idea. Brilliant video!
Loved this Jamie - a work of art! The transitions were amazing and the message spot on..
I found it terribly stressful trying to work out what to post and when to post. Especially since I take photos of all sorts of things that don't really relate, all I want to do it share them. I think I'll dedicate my insta to the sorts of photos that do well on there like photos of people. All I have to do know is stress out about what hashtags to use. I think I would much rather it didn't exist but I feel like I won't be successful without it.
There's been plenty of successful photographers before Instagram, there'll be plenty of successful photographers after it, too. Don't box yourself in.
VERY ACCURATE
Personally, I just post whatever I feel is worth posting. I don't really care if the pictures are related or similar or whatever for the most part. I also don't have a following on instagram, and I probably never will, and that's totally fine.
Great video Jamie. I place far too much importance on Instagram rather than appreciating my photos for what they are.
I've never used Instagram, maybe I should.
I was teetering on the edge of signing up for an Instagram account despite having been an analog photographer for 59 years. I've exhibited work up to 16x20 which is the largest I could do in my own darkroom and ran a communal photo gallery in the 70's. Your commentary about "experiencing" large works resonated with me. I will not bother with Instagram, no matter how "relevant" it is to photography today.
Instagram is NOT, has never been, and hopefully will never be the app *for* photographers. Obviously, Facebook's marketing strategy and the photographers' demand for wider exposure overlap to a degree.
But ultimately, the closest thing to experiencing photography on a screen right now would be via a personal website.
A real website is always best place, because you can control everything that is on it. I'm currently working on that very thing. Deciding what kind of style to go for.
Well Instagram was mainly for photography, travel photography now it's for brands showcase their products, people become ig models and copycat life styles of celebrities.
@@MorningCoffeeDaily Mobile photography, yes. Back when it was way less impressive. IG was limited by low resolution images, much heavier compression, and mostly caught attention for its "filters", that were meant to mimic physical artifacts of film. Ironically, the vast majority of its young user base couldn't even feel nostalgic about them, treated them as some sort of revelation in photography, and the service succumbed. Then Facebook happened. Today it's pretty much this:
twitter.com/like_gudim/status/1144319795782914049
Simon WoodburyForget I was responding to the message of the video. Of course there is a difference between various ways to experience photography, whether it's on a social network, custom website, printed album, gallery, etc. Massive difference.
@@SimonWoodburyForget Yes, an image is an image. Add more images to one and you have an album, a presentation and display of your individuality.
A website could serve the way galleries and prints are used by photographers to convey further their style and message.
Having Instagram grids is nice, but could not be enough to justify most dedicated photographers vision in showcasing their art.
A website is art itself: the fonts and text sizes, the margins and spacing, the animations-these all add to the narrative and expression which Instagram currently lacks in.
Perhaps it's what Instagram is. Simple, and not the right vehicle for artistry, even though currently there has never been a bigger platform for photography to be viewed and celebrated by communities on a mobile screen.
I felt so attacked at the 1.4 part, since I just got a new lens, I'm definitely in a 1.4 phase...
I’ve never heard of you in my life but this popped up in my recommendations and I was curious because of the title. What came next was an incredible journey of creativity mixed with wisdom and personal experience to create an incredibly beautiful experience on my phone screen.
You do one of the best video edits on yt that I have seen, awesome job! Pleasure to watch. Thanks!
Thank you. I'm glad you like them.
True. Talent entered the chat
I'm relatively young (in college) and have only been making pictures for a couple years now-- my entire idea of what makes a good photograph was originally influenced by Instagram. Now that I'm studying photojournalism and looking at much more work not on Instagram, the photographs I take are vastly different. Sometimes I still catch myself being very influenced by the platform (a tendency to arrange galleries in rows of three, for one). But photographs are indeed meant to be experienced in so many different ways, which are often impossible to achieve on Instagram's feed or grid. Fantastic video, Jaime, and another wonderfully perspective take on the medium.
just found your channel and i've been binging for a minute. it's wild the amount of motion graphics and tweaks (removing stuff from / adding stuff) to example photographs that you do for every video. i can't begin to imagine how long it must take to put one of these videos together. thanks for all the hard work!
Nice touch with the vertical ratio and the Instagram GUI. 👌 Love your content, man. So thoughtful.
For the first 15-20 seconds I was thrown by the vertical format, but it quickly turned into a very slick, well edited and thought provoking video.
likewise; I watch on my tv as I hate staring at my phone more than necessary.... but it’s very well done. Great video.
Thanks. It was interesting working in an aspect ratio like this. It felt so counterintuitive.
Excellent Jamie, I also hate how Instagram crops everything to hell
Jamie, I've been watching your channel for over a year now, and I would like to express how happy I am watching your videos. They have helped me to understand photography in a wider context. I appreciate how you show different photographers and their approach to photography. I think is more important than looking at a picture superficially. Also, I love the animations in your video, it must have been a lot of work!
Man, the edition on this video is just crazy, really well done.
Jamie, you are literally making some of the best videos on UA-cam! Thank you!!!❤️
Your videos are teaching me so much about photography, and not just the technical aspects or the "how to _____" like so many other channels. I'm learning different theories and approaches, and being exposed to different genres of photography I probably wouldn't have looked into on my own. You're literally changing how I think about photography. I don't subscribe to many channels, but you, sir, have earned it
This is easily one of the best videos I’ve seen in a while. Absolute triumph from the editing to the examples that help drive this message home. I’m watching again immediately.
Jamie I completely understand your view on this. To me Instagram uploads and true photography presentation have nothing in common. You can't beat print!
Always room for thought in your videos, that's amazing... thank you for your content, Mr Windsor... from Chile
Your videos give so much value Jamie! Your perspective on photography really resonates with me. Thank you!
Man!!! Your video editing is a true work of art!! Beautiful, beautiful. I’ve never seen a decent vertical/portrait video on UA-cam until this!
Brilliant video Jamie! Your videos offer refreshing views on photography.
Thank you for consistently uploading such informative and interesting videos on such original and eye opening topics. I don't think you realise how much of an inspiration you are!
Thank you. I'm glad my videos are having an impact on people.
It's such a joy going through all your videos after having recently discovered your channel. You've been a massive inspiration by getting photography back into my day-to-day thoughts.
I cannot get enough of your videos man. The effort you put into them, your thoughts on different subjects and just your general being is awesome. Keep up the incredible work man 👌🏼
great editing and this topic is too good to be in such a short video, love to go out to search the different photographers mentioned in the video thank you
The topic is cool and the music is awesome. I searched for it and then in the description : composed by me. I'm amazed. Good job
Jamie your work here on youtube is amazing. You have an awesome outlook on photography. It constantly challenges and inspires me to do more with my own work!
love your videos Jamie. Keep them coming . Thanks
Crazy editing/rendering/compositing/... work! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great video again James. I quit instagram last month and haven't missed it one bit. It became too bloated and full of ads.
Jamie, you're on another level = as someone said in another comment, your editing/video creation is a work of art in itself. And PLEASE, NEVER EVER fall into the temptation of starting "gear reviews" - that's killing so many great channels (Ted Forbes & The Art of Photography comes to mind). Big thanks for the insights!
From concept to execution, brilliant. You help people see photography beyond the frame Jamie. I love it how you've not only told a story about vertical, with vertical, but you've fully explicated it's limitations through demonstration. Editing is so slick.
Jamie, you should do a movie, every body will see it for sure. You are brilliant, a rough diamond
Motions graphics brings to the next level. Simply a masterpiece of video editing!
Fantastic job on this video! Also, I’m absolutely loving your presets. Keep it up man
Jamie, I am so glad I found your channel. Your video essays are fantastic and this animation was simply clever. Thank you.
Instagram has made me a pro at composing for 4x5. I do think I'll look back at my work at some point and think shame it's all portrait 4x5...
That's a very good point. Aspect ratio might be an interesting topic to look at for a video. I wonder if Instagram has had an effect on people using things like medium format where the 6x6 and 6x7 ratios are closer to the 4x5.
This is an interesting topic for me as well, Alex. I felt something similar and I stayed away from it until they allowed for other ARs than 1:1. I mainly shoot landscape orientation and closer to 16:9, but I used the experience of uploading there also as a way to start practicing 1:1 and 4:5, and overall portrait orientation.
I think as long as you don't take it as something written in stone, and specially if you keep your RAW files before final crop (as long as you don't shoot analog) it can play on your favour. E.G. I started playing around with panoramic ARs distributed in 3 tiles as well :)
Literally me. I've become so used to shooting for 4x5 crop that I almost never shoot landscape, which doesn't really make me too happy…
@@jamiewindsor I've been shooting on a Hasselblad 501 recently, really enjoying the freedom of 6x6.
@@brubecktime I might try the 3 tiles thing, I rarely bother posting my landscape shots because IG makes them look rubbish, this could be a solution.
*Quality of Jamie's videos is getting out of hand !*
Great message, Jamie. I love how you're always trying to provoke thought with your videos, and challenge the norms of what creative expression has become 🙏🏼
Wow you make your point not only very well in speech, but the editing does an amazing job strengthening the story as well! Must have been a ton of work, well done.
I absolutely *HATE* Instagram. The platform has degraded photography just as Facebook has degraded real social interactions. But unless photographers do something about it, it's just a straight shot to the bottom from here.
Giving a like coz u made this in portrait.
As always, love the style and flow of your videos. You draw the viewer in because of both the execution of the “story” and your particularly thoughtful approach and views on the topic.
Love your work. Been a long time follower. Love this video. You got it man. The fact that you posted this in a “cell phone” aspect ratio just shows how much time and attention to detail
you put into all your videos and work. Anyway, been a long time fan. Keep it up. Hope to meet you, learn from you or support you in some way, some day. Thanks again for teaching and sharing with us Jamie. Cheers.
Please don't ever upload a vertical video to UA-cam again. You made your point, let's take this thing seriously again.
Hey, it's ok. UA-cam has that format to use, is not exclusively horizontal. I get it, it annoys me too sometimes, but when the video is so carefully made like this one, it's a pleasure to watch.
Vertical lines allergy?
Take this 21:9 pill , it'll cure you :)
@@francescafrancesca3554 it is, but it's setting a precedent that I'm afraid of. With every upload like this, vertical video is going to get more attention. Soon you'll have (even more) organizations that claim to take themselves seriously dumping their Facebook content on here!
He gets a pass. You said it yourself. He made a point.
I love the editing style in this! So immersive. One of the few vertical/portrait videos done right.
Great video. Enlightening as always Jamie. Sweet job on the edit too. Completely followed and enhanced the narrative of the overall message.
As always Jamie your narrative and your presentation is top notch. I always know that I’m going to learn from, think about and enjoy each one.
Love how the video is edited & how the images move, awesome work!
Jamie, amazing job overall. The best point relates to content/editing. You've designed the video so that someone can pause and follow if they need to go slower but if someone's familiar with the technique, they can just let it play without getting too bored. Fine balance achieved - Bravo! Excellent tone, great knowledge and humble.
Instagram? Still haven't got an account.
My "work" suffers from being viewed on cell phones and badly calibrated laptop screens. Explaining to people that they are not seeing my work is a bit of a waste of time so unfortunately, I make some of my work for this purpose, resize and sharpen, lift shadows etc specifically for crappy social media which these shots are destined for.
My more subtle work cannot be viewed as intended by the people I would share it with so they get to see it on my screens or in print.
Your editing and animations are top of the game. So smooth, like going through a tunnel surrounded by the story. I always enjoy every second of your videos.
This was wonderful! Thanks a lot. (love your pacing style)
Jamie, you are amazing. Every video you make completely changes the way I think about photography for the better. Holy i don't even know how to show how much i appreciate you and your channel, just thank you.
can't wait for the next one, now that i watched your entire channel im impatient haha (very glad you switched from reviews to really more interesting photography subjects, with artists references, exemples and dope editing !)
Brilliant. Your videos continue to be works of art unto themselves.
Seeing one of my prints take physical form is far more gratifying than any amount of engagement on social media.
Thank you for doing this type of photography channel here. I have really learned a lot about how to really think about how my images turn out. Thank you
Beautifully done, and thoughtful as always. Thanks Jamie
Always a pleasure to watch one of your videos Jamie. I appreciate how much work has gone into this.
Amazing editing and great content - such a pleasure to see new episodes of your channel. Thank you Jamie!
Your videos are in a whole different category than anything else out there. The vertical video was done so well I almost forgot it was vertical. Your a genius man!
Dude I keep coming back to this video and honestly I can't get enough..the points you raise and the editing you went with to emphasise your views..mind blowing yet simple
LOVE the vertical format!!!
Dude! Thanks so much! Just found your channel and am absolutely inspired!
This is just stunning!!! Love your work
I am in love with your content man!
Good work man! Keep it up!💯💯
Every animation and transition was so fluid and intentional. Love it!
It's such a joy to watch your videos! Great work!
You always blow my mind with all those transitions and incredible creativity... Thanks!
This is an excellent piece. Production quality was absolutely brilliant. One of your best. As someone who shoots for large print I have a real love/hate with IG and end up not posting most of my favourite images because the smartphone format takes away, much more than it offers.
Been watching for quite a while but this is the one that made me subscribe. I thoroughly enjoy each video you produce.
I like the way you present your ideas. It's awesome! Thank you!
Every videos you produce are a piece of art. The content and the way you present and edit your videos is so well done. I could watch then endlessly
I have been struggling with similar problems myself lately - I get the feeling that when people consume my work on Instagram, it's a matter of them briefly glancing at it and thinking "oh, that's nice" then swiping up, for it to never be seen again. Which doesn't exactly encourage me to put effort into making the images in the first place, if that's the only way they're experienced. Unfortunately, Instagram is really the only platform that regular people use to consume photography - flickr is basically dead, and the rest tend to only attract other photographers or people looking for cheap stock photos. If I don't post on Instagram, nobody will experience my work at all - not even fleetingly. Apart from putting on a physical exhibition of my own (not likely) there aren't really many other options for getting general exposure. I think I've mostly come to accept this - and perhaps the only people who will experience my work as I intend will be friends and family who I can present it to properly. But, maybe that's OK for now.
Few years ago I came across your video where you talked about getting a 5d mark 2 in todays time to practice photography. Back then you didn't have this many views and I had commented that I wish to see you grow more because your content is so genuine. I am happy to see that happening now. Great work in bringing the art back to photography.
I am obsessed w your academic approach to modern concepts in photography..
thanks
Love your instructional "get on with it" style, and your essay videos are mind blowing revelations.
I love your videos. When it comes to presentation, no one does it better than you.
Great video! The only time I ever click the link on the emails I get from youtube is when you have a new broadcast. Especially love the nod to those other photographers which I will now check out.
Great work as always. I love how you talk about the art side of photography and not gear. Thanks Jamie
Quality content! Thanks for a great video Jamie. 🙌
Clever editing, points are made in adequate depth and examples and you put your sponsored messages at the end, not force feeding us with it. Really nice. Thanks!
Thanks for being on UA-cam Jamie, you are exceptional!
I needed this, Jamie
I love learning from you!!
another great video and subject that needed to be covered and discussed - thank you JW. I have recently gone back to the halcyon days when I printed film for my A-level and Foundation Art course. I recently produced a coffee table book of street art; and at the moment, I am in the midst of printing my largest prints yet (A2 size) to frame and show as a mini exhib at a bar in Deptford during summer. It is really fulfulling, so I totally advocate the points you make.
Fantastic content as usual and great editing, Jamie! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wooow Jamie, your animations are so smooth, so perfect - an absolute joy to watch!! I also really appreciate the originality of your topics👍 Great video - thanks for creating! :)
Awesome video! A creator that really puts thoughts and effort into his work, not only to get clicks but also to tell a story and put emphasis on a topic in a unique and exciting way. Not to mention the format and the video editing/transitions.
What an inspiring episode! Usually I would have switched off after a few seconds, but this was inspirational to the end. I truly appreciate your philosophical yet esay-to-grasp approaches to photography.
Also the editing is absolutely amazing!
Fantastic video Jamie. I instantly decided to print one of my photos 30x20. Can't wait to see what it looks like.
Love it. Love the editing, love the content. Thank you.
