Have a look at Alec's misery. He can barely keep his eyes open while Magnus is begging him to stay out of fear that one lock with Magnus's beautiful eyes will weaken his resolve. And this kiss... Magnus fighting so desperately, pouring all his love and desire into it, Alec being unable to lean into it but he can't pull away either... I think we all agree that the new definition of "pure, untouchable art" is called MALEC

You know, this had to happen for Magnus and Alec both to realize that this relationship is more important to Magnus than all he has had before. Magnus has kept a memory of each person he has loved to be able to remember them, because he thinks that love never dies, but with Alec he can't do that, he can't save a memory in a box and move on. He can't live knowing that he has lost him, so the best solution is to lose all his memories of him. That's how Magnus makes us understand that Alec is the love of his life.

As for Alec, it'd be better or, let's say, more realistic that he's also in tears, ppl who've gone through this kind of breakups would understand what I'm saying. The pain in his heart should be also hurt as hell, which is hard to hide and should be shown more clearly.

This is a whole ass mood
The "no, no, no" and Alec shivering at Magnus's touch while not being able to look him in the eye. Magnus having to reach up to kiss him and Alec not leaning in, but still kissing him back and then the "stay with me". This scene was perfection. Heartbreaking, but utter perfection.
It's a painfully beautiful scene.

I've honestly never felt so much pain from a series or movie scene.. Ever... Their voices, the small gestures, the trembling hands... Harry and Matt were phenomenal! The attention to detail is extraordinary!

Matt/Alec did the same when he first said "I love you" to Magnus. His body language, the trembling hands were the same.. like he was really petrified of the fear of losing Magnus. And in this scene, its Magnus that felt that way too.. :(

Alec is in my opinion one of the strongest people... He thinks that Magnus will be happy when he has his magic back and can love another... But also he knows that he will totaly break and won't be happy again...
He’s so strong and people don’t seem to notice it. He begged Lorenzo to save Magnus when Magnus was sick, when we all know that begging isn’t Alec’s way. Then he was trying to be the ever supportive boyfriend, telling him all the ways that he’s still a great person even though he’d planned this special evening to propose only for Magnus to show up drunk and very unhappy. Then he sought out Asmodious to restore Magnus’s power and immortality because he saw just how miserable Magnus was without his powers even though he really shouldn’t be contacting Asmodious for anything. And basically ripping out his own heart so that Magnus could be whole again.
Mwas willing to sacrifice his happiness for Magnus.

This is second to worst. At least Alec tried to deliver a clean cut. Magnus would have the best chance at recovering faster and with his magic hopefully returning even better. There is nothing worse than clinging onto false hope for weeks before being delivered the final blow. I am really sorry for Alec though. The burden of intentionally abandoning someone you still deeply love and being hurt and knowing that you chose this pain, bringing it onto oneself must be nearly unbearable. And I recall 2x08 when Alec tried to kill himself? I know he won't do it, but there will be certain dark thoughts crossing his mind at times.
This doesn’t get any easier to watch. Magnus’s desperation and begging, Alec barely holding it together. Trying so hard not to give in to Magnus’s kisses. Magnus going up on his toes to reach Alec because he’s not coming down to him like he usually does. Just this entire scene.......it breaks me every single time I watch it and yet I watch it on purpose multiple times a day. #malec4life

1:49 Harry Shum Jr ladies and gentlemen, what an amazing actor. I feel blessed for being able to get to see this great actor, no one would be as good as Harry playing Magnus Bane, you can feel every word. Alec once asked to Magnus "What are you afraid of?" and Magnus was very clear that he is afraid of losing Alec, now it's happening, you can see how desperately he tries to change Alec's mind and to show how much he loves him.

i'm so fucking proud of shumdario for the way they executed this scene. it's absolutely heartbreaking but so beautiful? the more i analyze it the more i find little details that add to its brilliance even more. the way magnus doesn't even argue w alec after he says "days ago, i didn't know the spark in you, the one i fell in love with, was gone for good" (even tho he didn't mean it) bc magnus believes he's right, but wants alec to stay anyway. the way he practically BEGS alec to stay, stuttering and stumbling over his words in an effort to get them out in a rushed torrent, the raw desperation in his pleas almost tangible. the way alec closes his eyes and refuses to look at magnus the entire time he does this, bc he can't bear to see the anguish and heartache in magnus', bc he knows that as soon as he allows himself to look at how much pain magnus is in as he does this, whatever bit of resolve he had built up for this moment would completely fall apart. the way you can clearly tell that seeing magnus like this is breaking him apart on the inside, that all alec wants to do in this moment is engulf magnus in his arms and make all his suffering and distress vanish into thin air, and it's taking him everything in his power to stop himself from doing that. the way magnus is the first one to initiate the kiss (which is rare, as malec stans know that throughout the show it's mainly alec that does so besides magnus' lil pecks here n there), putting as much love and devotion and emotion as he can muster into their kiss, to convince him to stay. the fact that alec doesn't reciprocate the first kiss, and the way magnus first pulls back, shakes his head a little, as if unable to believe that this is really happening, and kisses him again, as if trying to convince himself that maybe if he kisses him again, magnus can convince alec to stay, that he'll understand. the way magnus has to stand on his tiptoes when kissing alec bc for the first time, alec doesn't lean forward to kiss him back. the way that, when magnus realizes that alec still hasn't reciprocated the second kiss either, all he can say is, "stay with me, okay? please stay with me," bc what else can he say at this point? the way alec is still unable to meet magnus' eyes as he says "magnus, i can't," and you can see magnus' hands tremble when they fall to his sides. and after alec leaves the shop without once looking back at magnus, knowing that seeing him again will bring him running right back to magnus, the way magnus' shoulders are slumped and all hope is drained from him - he looks completely and utterly defeated.
as much as i want to say that i hate this scene for making me want to launch myself into the fucking sun, it's undeniably true that this is one of the most heartwrenchingly beautiful malec scenes this show has given us thus far. the pain feels so real it's almost palpable, and everything about it is so exceptionally portrayed. it's rare to see two actors dedicate themselves so much to one scene and invest themselves entirely in their characters so well. matthew daddario and harry shum jr are such phenomenal actors, and as much as my heart aches and breaks every time i watch this scene, it also swells w pride bc god fuck, i'm still in awe of them and how seamlessly they brought their characters and their emotions to life here.

Magnus my poor babe thought Alec was talking about holiday break 😭😭😭 as much as I love both of them with all my heart, this scene is too much I can’t handle to watch this again
So many parts of this scene was amazing. The way Alec jumps around complete truths at times and at others he tells downright lies. He knows that by saying how Magnus had lost his spark, Magnus would loose faith in his love. Magnus barely believed he was worth anyone's heart when he had lost his magic, and even after Alec tried to tell him how untrue those sentiments were, Magnus still didn't fully accept it. It was the easiest part for Magnus to believe was true in why Alec would want to leave him.
I also love how through the scene the shift that occurs in Magnus from being confused and angry to complete desperation. He is willing to do anything to keep Alec. My favourite part though is when Magnus starts whispering "stay with me", completely mirroring times when they thought they would lose each other. One being just after Magnus's magic fix was killing him. Also the entire part of their kissing was just the show trying to crush your heart until the shrivelled pieces of organ would no longer be able to feel anything 😭😭😭.
Cherry on top was how as soon as Magnus starts touching Alec, he can no longer meet his eyes at all. 😞 love these two so much ♥️
knowing that they’re gonna get married in the finale is the only thing stopping me from breaking down after EVERY SINGLE EPISODE 😭😭

It's an understate reaction, subtly performed. Alec is inclined to turn his pain inward against himself, so stoic denial of self is what he'd do as he "blows up the very ground he stands on to make things right".
THANK YOU!! Someone finally said it, I couldn't believe I was the only one. He's been trying so hard to hide his feelings and close himself to them because he could not leave Magnus otherwise, but in that moment we can actually see Alec's pain. Matt was amazing. (As was Harry obv)

- Truth: "You said there's nothing I can do to make it better", "Then what am I supposed to do? Just stand by and watch you suffer for the rest of our lives?" he is almost crumbling
And the struggle of not back out by the pain of Magnus of loosing everything.
Makes you feel every freaking emotion of his character struggle.

Matt’s acting in this scene is perfect. Alec struggles to even look at Magnus because he knew he will give in if he does. Yet, he can’t never push Magnus away. Until the very end, he couldn’t bare to look at Magnus to see how sad and desperate he is. Magnus lost his magic already and he couldn’t bare to lose Alec. Alec’s deal with asmodeus is so selfless and painful. One of my favourite Malec scenes in the show, so much heartbreak but their acting is so on point.

alec bringing up that the reason is magnus saying he wouldn't be happy without his magic - telling him the TRUE reason for all of this in the best way he could without ruining the deal. it breaks me. alec is basically telling him he'd give up anything for his happiness, and poor magnus has no idea
edit: magnus saying "this isn't you, you're not this selfish" also really hits, because he knows alec so well, and he's RIGHT, because what alec is doing is in his mind the most selfless thing he can do

This whole conversation is basically a choice that Magnus doesn’t realize he’a making. If Magnus had said something about having his magic wouldn’t mean anything without Alec or that Alec means more to him than anything. By saying that he can never be happy without his magic and agreeing again with that sentiment, Magnus made his choice. Alec honored Magnus’s choice even though it hurt him to the core. All Alec wants is ultimately for Magnus to be happy, even if it’s without him. You can’t ask for a greater love than that.
When Magnus says, "Fine... I'm in pain."

M L That’s actually an excellent point. I know Magnus told Alec he’s “been there” himself after Alec almost threw himself off the balcony when he was under Iris’ spell. However, I wonder if they ever discussed it properly. Magnus talked about it on the show with Simon. Does Alec even realize that Magnus has a bit of a history with this kind of thing?
Magnus also needs to realize that magic alone won't make him happy. Some of his remarks about it were harsh, & I think Asmodeus was right that he'd eventually resent Alec for his loss. The pain of this break-up is forcing him to evaluate what he values most; and while magic is a part of him, he can and does have a life outside of it.

The desperation and pleading in Magnus's voice gets me every time...
You can see the mental and physical retrain in Alec. Magnus is putting every ounce of emotion into those three kisses, in hopes it will pull Alec back to reality. You can see Alec is trying so fucking hard not to just cave in and let Magnus win, so much so that when Alec pulls away, he doesn’t look Magnus directly in the eye. He knows he can’t, he knows in order for him to go through with the deal he has to deny Magnus. You can feel the inner turmoil between them, and ultimately Alec decides that he can risk the happiness of himself and Magnus, if it means Magnus gets the one thing that makes him himself, back.
Magnus is suffering sm about everything and now that alec let him too gives him the feeling that he made something wrong and that having pain id not good...well he‘s LITERALLY broken now

Over the course of the show we learn two things about Alec - how much he values honesty and hates being lied to, and how far he'll go to do what he believes is right. And here he is, lying to the love of his life because he believes it's the right thing to do. It's almost physically painful for him to say those words.
I just realised that this is one of the very few times Magnus calls Alec by ‘Alec’ and not ‘Alexander’, this proves how much Magnus wanted desperately for Alec to return to him

The way the music cuts off when Alec walks out the door leaving Magnus hit me harder than I thought it would. Everything about this scene was so perfect and haunting at the same time. I felt every emotion.😭😭😭
If alec hasn't figured out by now what magnus fears the most, you could tell in harry's/magnus's voice and how his voice breaks that he fears losing the people (alec) he cares about the most. And it's heartbreaking.

Also I noticed that just like last week when he had his break down crying in Alec's arms he called him Alec, he's doing it again here. Its like Magnus can't call him Alexander anymore in that beautiful loving way he use to because he's so heartbroken and unhappy.

Still heartbreaking, still makes me cry.
This scene literally broke me because Alec is hinting at why he’s doing this but with the amount of information that Magnus has it seems like a genuine breakup. On top of that, we know how much this must have broke Alec but he did it anyway to make sure that Magnus could be happy even if it wasn’t with him. I love Alec’s character growth in the show because in the books he always seemed to need to be prompted and shown what was wrong to grow while in the show he seemed to pick up on Magnus’s cues much better.
I'm honestly not the type of people who gets emotional but this break up hurts so bad , I felt every second of it
I skipped this part when I was watching shadowhunters because it was to heartbreaking to even watch 😭😭 I love malec hopefully they get back together by the end of the season because if they don’t I’ll die
